A walk-off bunt
You don't see many of those.
Melvin Mora laid down the bunt heard 'round the world - or at least to Boston. And he did it on his own. It wasn't called from the dugout.
"Like I was telling my friend, I've been involved in so many playoffs and nobody's expecting that," Mora said.
Mora did the math and realized something else: "We need just one run, we don't need a grand slam."
And if it didn't work?
"He’s trying to win the game," manager Dave Trembley said. "I don’t think you’re going to second-guess anybody after the way this game turned out and the way we fought back. Their effort was…it would be an understatement to say it was terrific."
Trembley had to talk Chad Bradford into walking the bases loaded in the 10th, another move that worked in the Orioles' favor.
As if anyone should be pitching to A-Rod these days.
Here's Trembley's version of the mound conference:
"I said, ‘Fellas, we’ve got one shot at this. We’re going to walk Rodriguez and we’re going to walk Matsui.’ And Bradford said, ‘Well, I’d rather go right after them,’ and I said, ‘I know you would, but we’re not going to do that.’ I thought we had one shot right there. They didn’t have another catcher. Molina was going to have to hit. Gosh darn, are you going to let a guy beat you who has 155 RBIs after we’ve come back? I don’t think that would have been a prudent move."

I know we need to lose to help improve our 2008 draft position but, man, that was sweet.

How Ironic is it that Mora wins it with a bunt after being obsessed with it all season? I think it was less about winning and more about proving that he could bunt for a basehit in a key at-bat like that.
I'll take it but it's weird.
The O's have taken the season series from nyy and it feels good.

It's late in the evening of September 28 and I'm writing from Boston to say that Mora's bunt to win the game was one of the most memorable hits of the Red Sox season. That doesn't make sense, you say? Tonight's events were like a scene out of a movie. The Sox won their game tonight against the Twins, and needed one more win or a Yankee loss to get the AL East title. The Sox game was over, the team left the field, and the Orioles game was still being played. With probably 15,000 fans still in Fenway Park, management decided to broadcast the Orioles game on the jumbotron. Even into the late innings and extra innings, thousands of fans stayed in the park watching (and praying) for a miracle because the O's were behind the Yankees by 3 runs. Then the brilliant strategy of getting Molina up at bat worked, and the Yanks didn't score. In the bottom of the 10th inning there was much cheering at Fenway from fans still watching the game on the jumbotron, when fan favorite Kevin Millar was up at bat - it would have been sweet to have him get the RBI that helped the Sox win the Division! Next, Mora came up to bat and made the decision to bunt - the Orioles won the game, and the Yankees' loss meant the Sox won the AL East at that moment. I could not imagine it would end that way!

Thanks for the quote from Trembley. Man, there are times when you can just FEEL the guy's baseball fire, his passion for the game, his intensity. I love it!

HOLY CRAP! Why can't we play like this all season. I was out in Federal Hill tonight (big mistake by the way... will discuss later) and I almost died. A walk off bunt?!?! How nutty nuts is that? Melvin must have some big ones to pull that off. Probably the scariest moment of my life. I really think I stopped breathing for a minute. Good job Mora... I still hate you though.
So the O's should be expecting a very large fruit basket tomorow (hopefully with money stuffed inside) from the Red Sox. We deserve it thats for sure.
So back to my bar story... I'm at Mad River getting my drink on and thats when we heard the fireworks. Game is over and the dirty yankee fans start to frolic our way. I'm sorry but are 20-something New York men given hair gel at birth. There was enough hair gel in that bar to fill a bath tub. Seriously grow up, take off your man jewelry and get a hair cut. The John Travolta Grease Hair is out. You look retarded as hell.
Enter D for Im done rambling. GO O's! Beat them Yanks again!

And who said the Orioles never play a meaningful game in September .

How many playoffs has Melvin been in? I don't remember one.
?

Wow...what a win! I stopped following updates after the bottom of the 8th...what a mistake, except they probably go one, two, three outs in the ninth if I was paying attention! LOL!
Nice to see the Yankees cannot win the division!

Why is Moore playing 1B? He holds much more of an upside at 3B. The O's still cater to overpaid mediocre vets like Mora, Millar, etc.

It's been a season full of low points, but last night was the first time in awhile that I was proud to be an O's fan. They showed alot of guts and pride to come back like that. Too bad we cant play the Yanks everyday.

Very heady play by Mora. I'm reading what Trembley said about not going to second-guess anyone, but there's no second-guessing needed on the Mora bunt. None.
He's an adept bunter, knew the third baseman was backed up, knew that a fast runner was on third, knew that there would be the element of surprise involved, so what's not to like?
This is the sort of hitting I expected from this lineup early in the year. It's a shame that they couldn't find themselves for so long; if they had, the O's would likely be around .500, pitching or no pitching. As an offense, this was a largely disappointing year.

Mora and Trembley looked like geniuses. It was great to see the Orioles play the role of spoilers especially beating the Yankees. If you can't win the division or a wild card the spoiler role looked good on this team last night.

I like Trembley more and more every day.

Last night's ending was one of those rare nuggets found in a creek full of fools gold. Very, very sweet.
And congrats to you, Melvin. As I'm sure we all recall, you were royally crucified earlier this season when a bunt you dropped in an eerily similar situation (bottom 9th, down 1, 1 out, runner on 3rd?) didn't quite work out.
I said back then on these pages that the difference between the goat and the hero is simply making the big play. Sometimes it's not the situation, the circumstances, the odds, what's expected, or what the 'book' tells you to do.
It's just whether or not you can make the big play.

Anne, I don't care for your comments towards me at all. I simply get upset because all you do is glorify Brian Roberts to the point that I don't even like the guy anymore. There are lots of other players on the team, some of which who actually compete at Roberts' level.
You are the typical female Orioles fan: you go for looks and that's it. Just like all the ladies that liked Brady Anderson so much when he was here. If you are a fan you should be a fan of the team, not just put one player on a pedestal and bash all the others. They win as a team and they lose as a team. Roberts has won them some games and he has lost them some games. I won't knock the guy's skills, he can play, but the way you get so defensive when you perceive that someone is negatively referring to him is idiotic. For Pete's sake, even when the guy gets a day off you act like Trembley should be fired for such a horrible act.
As for your homosexual reference towards me ("my boyfriend is better than your boyfriend"): completely uncalled for and nothing further from the truth. I love women, but you would never get the time of day on my watch.
As for another female that regularly posts on here, Jennifer, you are a breath of fresh air! I love reading your comments and always get a good laugh out of them, whether that is your goal or not. You are not the typical female Orioles fan. Very knowledgeable and like I said, fun to read!
"d" for Dropped a Bunt? Are you kidding me??? Way to go Mel-Mo!

Oh yeah, well my Dad's better than your Dad Melvin!
I seriously don't know how Melvin figures he's been in "so many playoffs". He always harps on that. He's talking about 1999 I think, isn't that it? And wasn't he on the bench for most of the action? He's such a charlatan.
Good bunt this time though. Now who would you like to be traded to, so you can take your playoff experience and help some other team make the playoffs? Your work is done here. Thanks for playing, that playoff experience really helped out.

"You are the typical female Orioles fan: you go for looks and that's it. "
Sorry, I know this wasn't my argument, but I read that line and I just have to say that you, Eric in PA, just made yourself into quite the mule's backside with that comment!! Being a female myself and knowing a LOT of other female baseball fans it's insulting when men continue to insinuate that the average female fan is only concerned with who looks the best in their uniform. This may surprise you to know, but as women we can differentiate between talent and good looks; and appreciate the two exclusive as completely different entities.
Now, on to the O's win last night. That was one of the best nights at the Yard this year! Being the team that blocked the Yanks from scooping out a 10th consecutive East title was sweet enough as it was...but to come from behind causing Rivera to blow a three-run save and win in extras on a suprise squeeze bunt just made it all that much sweeter! Way to go O's for putting a little bit of a bright spot on an otherwise dismal September!

I wear my Bird cap every day no matter how things were going with the team. Anyway I was standing line at in Trader Joe's this morning (Hadley Mass) buying milk and the cashier guy said to me "thank you!" and I wasn't quite sure about what until he extended his hand and said "thank your team for us".
As soon as the Sox game finished, Fenway began broadcasting the Birds game and cheering the Orioles as if they were their own. They wanted to see Millar get the RBI but it was sweet that, after all the controversy at the beginning of the season Melvin Mora finally laid a perfect bunt.
The game itself was impressive, to rally back from 7-2 to tie it. I still do not feel this team is as bad as everyone thinks.
Okay guys, time to finsh off the Yankees & take the series.
If the O's win 1 of the 2 games left against NY they will take the year series, first time in 10 years, I think? That's another small but special milesone or record that was broken this season.
Imagine what the Birds could have accomplished if there was no loss to the starting rotation
