Second thoughts
If the Orioles are trying to make a good impression on Matt Wieters, they picked the wrong night.
Wieters left his seat during the Rangers' nine-run sixth inning, when they sent 14 batters to the plate. He's now threatening to pull a reverse Elway and play football if the Orioles don't trade him.
Meanwhile, Dave Trembley will resign between games of the doubleheader so he can manage the Daytona Cubs.
Those 14-hour bus rides don't seem so bad anymore, do they?
Brian Burres only got two outs in the sixth. He allowed eight runs and eight hits, and walked a batter. He also threw a wild pitch.
His mistakes were so big, they influenced the tides.
Not a good day for No. 56.
J.R. House is trying to exercise his escape clause again.
It's a long line, pal.
I'm giving Brian Roberts permission to auction off my will to live.

man, how good does bedard's game look compared to todays beat down against essentially the same lineup?
Daniel just cannot figure it out.

Where is Manny Alexander when you need him?

I guess Olson will need to pitch a complete game............

If this game was a horse, they’da shot it.
Posted by: Kevin on Shore | August 22, 2007 7:45 PM
Rangers will have to forfeit the 2nd game because they will be too tired and dizzy from running the bases in the 1st game.
Posted by: Boomer | August 22, 2007 7:47 PM
Oh my goodness...
I went away from the game right when Burres came in. I was thinking positively that we can come back. 16-3 is what I came back to. Woah nelly! 20-3 another slam. Getting flat-out beat in game one of a double header, I think, often sparks the loser to rebound for game 2. Not this beat, though. Not when you burn both long men up.
I really bad for folks at the game, because this is when even a die-hard fan might call it a night, but they have to stay for game 2.
C'mon Olsen! We need a gem tonight! Go O's!

Was just watching the youtube video on Wild Bill that someone posted a couple blogs back, and I realized a couple of things.
Elrod talking about doing the O-R-I-O-L-E-S chant in New York, that's pretty cool. Wish we could get that kind of enthusiasm in our own ballpark.
And I also realized, Marty Bass really is a complete idiot.
Posted by: Hatepaste | August 22, 2007 7:49 PM
Anyone else remember that old Bugs Bunny 'toon where the sluggers just marched around the bases in musical syncopation, with the crack of the bat serving as the beat?
This game is the closest I've ever seen to that cartoon in real life...unfortunately, Bugs won't be comin' outta the 'pen to "paralyze these palookas"....

When did the O's start playing football?
Where are their pads?

and thecomeback begins!!!!!
Posted by: ncbeth | August 22, 2007 7:54 PM
So much for that run differential in the O's favor. Ouch! Elrod's gone, Manny Alexander's not in the majors, and Jose Canseco might be in prison somewhere. Who's going to pitch?
Posted by: CRB | August 22, 2007 7:54 PM
So what do you do if you are Burress or Bell? Laugh? Forget it ever happened? You better, cause you are going to be needed at some point this weekend.
Roch, Will you talk to them after the games tonight, like around 2am at the rate they are going?
Posted by: DS | August 22, 2007 8:00 PM
Is anyone still watching this game?
Posted by: Danny Boy | August 22, 2007 8:01 PM
We're only 3 touchdowns behind!!
Posted by: John S | August 22, 2007 8:02 PM
Shoulda' known they'd go in the tank once Trembley got the job? ;-)
Posted by: DS | August 22, 2007 8:06 PM
Ok, so WHAT is the record for most runs scored against the O's and the record for biggest blow out difference?
Posted by: Dean in Hawaii | August 22, 2007 8:09 PM
This is the worst drubbing I recall witnessing, or even reading about.
I almost dread the second game.
Posted by: Mark Brown | August 22, 2007 8:11 PM
OK, we win the second game and we take the series. I would say that it's important not to lose sight of that, but I scratched my eyes out in the 8th inning of this debacle.

Texas put up 27 or so?
they've got a shot at topping that

And no Elrod to come in to Pitch.
Posted by: tvdpdx | August 22, 2007 8:16 PM
So, this officially marks the start of the infamous August swoon. Trade Cabrera now.
Posted by: Byrnewood | August 22, 2007 8:17 PM
I almost couldnt believe it. They day Trem gets the managerial job, Matt in attendance and the orioles play like... well the orioles. Same old stuff different day/game. Lets hope for a game two win but would it even feel like a series win giving up so many runs today?
Posted by: terps19 | August 22, 2007 8:17 PM
I get home from work and tune in to MLB Audio and can't believe what I'm hearing. Is Joe Angel doing an Orson Welles takeoff? 30 runs. 2 slams. 3 3-run homers. How can all the pitchers all be this bad all at once? Talk about a laugher. It's funny, all right, but not Ha-Ha.

"He's now threatening to pull a reverse Elway and play football if the Orioles don't trade him."
I hope that is a joke :/
Posted by: Danny | August 22, 2007 8:25 PM
I'll cut Shuey a little slack - he took one for the team - 70 pitches becasue the guys before him were playing slow putch softball...Burris and Bell were pathetic - that was embarrassing.
Posted by: Gary | August 22, 2007 8:25 PM
Oh, now I get it. They're trying to show Matt Wieters how bad we need him.
Posted by: Bob the 1st | August 22, 2007 8:28 PM
Ouch! Tough start to the Dave Trembley era... nobody deserves that. What do you say to your team between games? Luckily that only counts as one win. That certainly will crush the team ERA but all in all it could be worse. That bullpen is full of fillers.
Dempsey just said this was the worst game he has ever seen.
It's easy to point fingers after this kind of a game, but I think Ramon Hernandez has got to get his head into this game. He is really struggling in all phases and he doesn't seem to be a calming influence on pitchers when it is called for.
Anyone like Tejada posing after his warning track flyball?
Let's go Olsen--we need 7.

I think the Os will make SportsCenter tonight! I'm so proud! It only hurts when you laugh.
Posted by: DS | August 22, 2007 8:33 PM
This is already up on "Wiki Answers" as the most runs scored by a team in a single game in the modern era (since 1900).
Believe it or not, the all-time record was set by the Chicago Colts (now Cubs), who plastered the Louisville Royals 36-7...on June 29, 1897.

On a night that I can actually sit back and relax with the game....look what happens!!
Jim66 - Beat down? You are being very kind!
Tom in Tinseltown - Great analogy! I remember exactly what you are talking about and the thought gave me
a good laugh! Thanks
John S. - 3 touchdowns and a field goal to tie! I think we lose this one!!

This should be the end of the Shuey & Bell era.
Posted by: Danny | August 22, 2007 8:40 PM
WOW, what a way for the players to celebrate Trembley's new 2008 contract he signed today! 30 frickin' runs! The whole team needs to give Dave a group hug.
Posted by: BobbyWoontz | August 22, 2007 8:41 PM
Wow, when the O's beat the sox 2 out of 3 10 days ago you would've thought the O's still had Brooks and Boog playing for them. Me thinks that the loudmouths in Inner Harbor that weekend are nice and silent tonight. Nice way to celebrate Tremblay's signing...most runs given up since 1900... Let's go O's Let's go O's !!!
Posted by: Terrible O's | August 22, 2007 8:43 PM
What do Michael Jackson and the O's have in common? They both wear a glove for no apparent reason. I hope they find them for the second game! I think Trembley's strategy was to wear out the Rangers in the first game. BTW I stand by my previous "No Class" observation of Ron Washington!
Posted by: Rick Shaw | August 22, 2007 8:45 PM
And to think we tail gated this double header. Trem was stopped by 2 pl;ayers from pulling the rest of his hair out. Sam Plazzo was caught by UTUBE laughing relentlessing while watching the game while resting and spending his millions carefully.

wow
Posted by: jim66 | August 22, 2007 8:54 PM
The Ravens should hire the Rangers offensive coordinator.
All you can do is laugh. Look at it this way. Now we can all say we root for a team that did something no one has done in 110 years.
Seriously, its only 1 really bad game. Get them in the nightcap.
Posted by: Satyr3206 | August 22, 2007 8:54 PM
Wow... well... on the bright side, I always said I would rather have a blowout than to have the O's lose on the last play of the game.
Yet, the team ERA might have strained its oblique after this one Roch.
Yikes.
Honestly though, Shuey is a nice comeback story in baseball this year BUT... why is he still pitching for this team? I realize he had five K's tonight, but otherwise he got lit up... and every time I see him pitch, he walks batters and gets lit up. Why not let him go and give a young guy a look? Just a thought...
Not the best way to celebrate Trembley's new contract....

The Texas pitcher actually recorded a save in that game for pitching the last three innings. Jason Stark is going to have a field day with this one.

I'm trying to figure out what's worse. Starting a season 0-21, allowing Toronto to hit ten homers in a game against us, or this night.
Posted by: mojito | August 22, 2007 9:00 PM
Just one Game......
Ugly for sure. The Trembly era started Weeks ago.
Everybody has to laugh this off. Cannot stress about it....
Maybe JR can Pitch? Or Wieters, did he not also do some bullpen/closer work?
Posted by: Doug | August 22, 2007 9:07 PM
I thought Trembly focused on respecting the game. The Orioles did no such thing in the first game tonight.
How do you let up 30 runs in six innings. The only thing I can remember that was even close -- I think the Rangers (or a team playing Texas) gave up 12 runs in the top of something like the 15 inning to lose an extra inning game 16-4.
Posted by: O's Fan in Nebraska | August 22, 2007 9:09 PM
Can someone pls explain why the O's pitchers didn't plunk one guy during this debacle? Not even one brushback? After its was 20-3 I couldnt believe i saw them taking close pitches, hustling to beat ground balls and hustling home from second on a base hit. One of the last batters even took a walk. This is the second time that Trembley has stood by when clearly a message to the other team needed to be sent (less not forget NY last week). I hope our manager shows a little more kahunas or he will lose this clubhouse as quick as he got it.
Posted by: firepreston | August 22, 2007 9:12 PM
30 runs allowed? Who was pitching for the Orioles, Charlie Brown?
Posted by: T Dog | August 22, 2007 9:25 PM
If pitching and defense win championships, what roles do Payton, Huff, Gibbons, and Tejada play? Just asking. And trust me folks, Corey is not that good. He is fast but does not have superior defensive skills (he often misreads the ball off the bat). Anyway, I hope the O's do not lay down this second game. How embarassing.
Posted by: JPA | August 22, 2007 9:35 PM
Roch, I could use a blog entry from you bringing some humor to this travesty. Or is the loss simply inherrently hilarious?
Posted by: Dimitrios (now in L.A.) | August 22, 2007 9:37 PM
I think this is grounds for another WNST protest (C'MON NESTOR!). This game was an embarrassment to the city of Baltimore and it's going to be all over the national newspapers tomorrow.
I GUARANTEE IT.
This game was horrendous and absolutely appalling.
Offseason to do list: GET A BULLPEN THAT WORKS, VOID BAEZ'S CONTRACT, GET A BIG BAT, START OVERPAYING AND GET SOME REAL PLAYERS ON THIS TEAM!!! YOU GOT THE MONEY, SO SPEND IT!!!!

think they could sneak wieters in bakos uniform between innings, I think with the mask on nobody would know the difference

What is this team without Bedard and Guthrie? We go from slightly above average to KC-Pitt bad. Does anyone not want to sign Bedard to an extension?
I can't watch as the defense butchers this second game as well. Can we bring up Luis Hernandez and the new Molina? :)
Don't mess with Texas, I guess.

Where's Jeff Tackett to pitch when you need him?
Posted by: JLA | August 22, 2007 11:04 PM
hey roch, any truth to the rumor that the o's are gonna call up 1B mark fleisher from frederick. i hear he can throw a pretty mean fastball. and he's got three pitching appearances under his belt. isnt that what the o's need, a first baseman who can come in and mop up in a 20 run game...or 21...or 22...etc
Posted by: Zach | August 22, 2007 11:31 PM
Terry Matthews, Steve Kline, Mike Timlin, Armando Benitez, and Manny Alexander combined couldn't have pitched worse for the Orioles tonight.
Posted by: Hafiz in Port Deposit | August 23, 2007 12:17 AM
I hope everyone that was praying/begging for Olson to get called up again and be put in the starting rotation watched his 3 games so far. This guy may be a great AAA pitcher, but he can't get major leaguers out and looks worse than DCab. The guy does have a major league win but he is playing with fire every inning. He allows approx. 15 baserunners per 9. We already have DCab in the rotation, why do we want another one.
