More on Game 1

In case you need to update your stats, the Orioles fall to 0-1 in 27-run games.

Jay Payton, the voice of reason:

"Thirty-three unanswered runs are too many!"

Erik Bedard has allowed 31 runs in his last 17 starts. The Orioles gave up 30 in nine innings.

The 30 runs are the fourth-most in major league history. The Chicago Colts defeated the Louisville Royals, 36-7, in 1897.

Then Bob Irsay moved the team to Indianapolis.

I wonder how the New York Post's George King would write the game story for The Sun. Here's his lead paragraph from last night's Yankees game:

ANAHEIM - The stench coming off Mike Mussina's stuff last night invaded your nose like low tide. And the rest of the Yankee hurlers reeked, too.

Pure poetry.

Guess what story has supplanted michael vick on the front of espn.com?

Fire Crazy Dave. Glad I had the O's plus 25 in that first game tonite. Only the Orioles could knock Iraq, Subprime loans and Michael Vick off the lead of the late news. Way to go. Can you say national laughing stock? Welcome back to Baltimore, Andy. You're definitely not in Kansas, Minnesota or Chicago anymore. Please, now more than ever, don't ever put Baltimore on the road jersey

No more Bako!!! Can't hit. Can't hold onto the ball. Can't call a good game. Can't throw. Worst Oriole ever!

I blame Trembley. He let all the pitchers in too long....except Cabrera. He probably would have given up only 12-13 runs in a complete game. See my new website firetrembley.com
Really though, isn't Cabreras line identical almost every time...something like
5 2/3
97 pitches
5 BB
5 k's
5 earned runs
something has to give there

108 pitches in 5 innings...how the hell do you do that?

Crack me up, Roch
also 0-1 when down by 20 or more runs after the 8th inning
they show no heart when down by 25 or more, too. I blame Trembley.

Jim,

You have not seen enough of Cabrera, if you still ask that question seriously. Though i think it is rhetorical....

WHY are people freaking out about Trembley??? That's so puzzling. Burres and Bell are the long men, right? Burres didn't even give him an inning, and he (everyone) realized after that it was a time for plan B, save as many guys as you can for the 2nd game. That's why you try to stick with Bell and Shuey as long as they can while they take one for the team; it was very clear that all the pitchers that were thrown out there did not have their best stuff, but the plan is to save your better guys for a more meaningful game.

If you are freaking out about this game, you're either just venting from humiliation or have not watched this franchise for the past 10 years.

Oh there is worse than a 30-3 game, and that's losing for 10 years in a row.

It was historical, crazy, and yes, embarrassing, but at the end of that game, the Rangers just tied the series 1-1. Boo hoo

Disagree w/ D of E, Bako calls a better game than Chug-a-lug Hernandez and both seem to be hitting (or NOT hitting) about the same. Bako does run hard to first. I guess he carries a lucky harmonica in his back pocket!!!

According to baseball-almanac.com, the Rangers have set the record for runs in an AL doubleheader. Previous mark: 35.

I knew you wouldn't disappoint after this debauchle. Thanks for the laughs Roch!

I didn't think anything could top that debacle in Boston earlier this year. Way to go O's!! You found a way!!

I don't blame Trembley one bit for this loss. Once Texas got 10+ runs, the players just mailed it in and were trying to get to the 2nd game. He had to leave those pitchers in there to save the rest of the bullpen for Game 2.

call me crazy, and yes i know it's been suggested...but let House catch. This is what September (and the end of August for non-contenders) is for: To see if the younger talent has a chance to be a regular or in House's case, the backup to Ramon.

let's first of all agree, that although it's only been one inning, House hasn't looked like the nightmare behind the plate i was expecting. He's enthusiastic, as big as a house and seems to have caught for half of the O's pitchers this season at one point or another (Bell, Shuey, Hoey, Olsen, etc).

oh yeah...and he can hit. So, why would we keep the offensively challenged and below avg catching skilled Bako on the roster? To me, it seems beneficial to DFA Bako so maybe he can catch on elsewhere i.e. Gil, Fasano, Casanova, etc and so the O's can really evaluate House. What would it hurt? Clearly, his future on the team is not as a DH given the age of our players and the fact that half the players seem to be ideal for the DH. He needs a position and if catching is his strong point, give he a chance.

Can anyone argue that Bako would be a better backup? i have to assume that their defensive skills are only seperated by the experience factor and if he was that much of a liability, he would've already substituted catching in the minors with another position. We don't need an allstar now. we need a solid backup who can hit some to bridge the gap between Hernandez and Weiters. anyone have an opinion regarding this?

I don't think I've been so mad as an orioles fan. I fell asleep when it was 24. I never thought we'd give up 30. Free the bird!

Better to lose this way than for Ray or Julio or Benitez give up the GWHR (or GS) in the bottom of the 9th to the NYY....or the D'Rays.

Hey, I was there, from 5P until 12:30A.

When Texas got to 16, I made the over-under 23 with no takers.

But the funniest thing in the whole evening happened in the second game when Huff did a sprint and contortions so House wouldn't have to catch a little popup. BTW, do you still think House is a hitter?

A memorable evening. Good thing it's baseball --- the next game will be totally different and the O's will be back in it.

Sorry you weren't there.

The players play and the manager manages. Its not Trembley's fault everything got hit over the fence.

But we should have drilled someone so they know they can't stand at the plate like they own it. See Roger Clemens, Don Drysdale, Bob Gibson.

The first step to winning is acting like you will.

In case you need to update your stats, the Orioles fall to 0-1 in 27-run games...

...absolutely brilliant. We all need to laugh about this. In a way it's like a mini-1988- except it only took one night.

Let's shake it off and get back to keeping Trembley over .500. 2 games right now.

i won my teaser, i had the orioles plus 27.5 and had the over 33.5

Well, Roch:

Baseball season is now officially over for me. I am ashamed and embarrassed again to call myself an Orioles fan. Every year you think that things are going to get better and they only get worse. Last night was a disgrace. Maybe, it was good that Andy M got to see this debacle. I'm sure his opinion of this team has now changed and that he will clean house in the off-season. Go Steelers!!

Do you know what? I am not even upset at the 30 runs. I'm just so numbed from the last 10 years of futility that I am used to the O's reaching a new low several times each season. That's should scare the O's brass more than last night's record ineptitude. Even die-hard fans cant get upset anymore.

which of these guys do you think is the better pitcher? I'd like to hear your comments.

W K Era BAA
Bedard 13 218 2.97 .210

Becket 15 148 3.15 .237

Santana 13 191 2.88 .214

Haren 14 147 2.66 .227

The late night hosts, Leno, Letterman, and Kimmel are going to have a 'field day' on tonight's monologue.

To those of you who deem Paul Bako to be such a poor catcher Greg Maddox would disagree strongly with you. Nothing personal but I think I will go with Maddox on this one.

Haven't heard anyone call out Ron Washington for not pulling his starters and letting the game go the way it did. Seems to me that anyone with any shred of class would have done this. It was also the first of two games, providing yet another reason to let the subs play a bit.

If I were the Os, besides forgetting about the horrible stats of the night and all the records, I'd remember this next time they go to Texas.

I was there for the first game. I couldn't stay for the second, because we couldn't leave our baby with the sitter that long.

I feel totally used after that game. Just call me Eileen Dover.

That was pretty demorallizing. I wonder how fans would have reacted if Sam Perlozzo was still managing the club. Maybe the pitching staff's poor execution is still his fault ?

These are the types of games that make me think that B-Rob and Bedard are DEFINITELY going to resign after 2009...

In defense of Cabrera, he pitched well early-on. CAN WE JUST GET A CALLED STRIKE 3 AT HOME ONE TIME? CABRERA HAD 2 THAT WERE NOT CALLED EARLY. He gets out trouble and does not implode if the ump makes the right calls. Plus the out at first was blown. We get no respect behind the plate all year.

HA, HAHA, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...

Come on guys, lighten up. How is this not hysterical? I don't know that I ever regret missing a game as much; the environment must have been a blast.

I want to see them win as much as the next guy, but in the end it is entertainment. When you look at it that way, what more could you ask for?

Wow, Brian. Easy does it.

I asked three simple questions. Despite your choosing to attack me, I remain interested in seeing your answers (since you answered none of them in your response).

you wrote:

"He [Wild Bill} was an example of what has happened to the O's since potter took over, even Wild Bill wouldn't go for years & never did his O R I O L E S ever again."

My question was essentially "how do you relate Angelos to Wild Bill who quit coming in a dispute with O's policy years before Angelos took over?"

You wrote about "MacFail blunders" in addition to the Gomez and Parrish giveaways. I asked what you considered to be any MAcPhail mistakes, and I listed the one I could think of - Tejada streak extending. What others do you think there have been?

You characterized the Gomez transaction as a giveaway. I recognize that many posters felt that way. My question was, do you have any knowledge of a trade that was offered for Gomez that we turned down? Any evidence that we could have gotten something back for him? I was looking for reason to believe we made a blunder instead of simply accepting the fact that no one had anything to offer us for him.

Since I am the type of person who looks for information or data to help form and revise an opinion, I was looking to hear some analysis. if you do not wish to provide any, then, OK, thanks, anyway. If you feel like attacking and insulting instead, well, have it I guess. It is an open board. I'll just look for information elsewherre.

All right, I’m sure it began last night and will continue today and through however long a sports news cycle lasts. The O’s will be the subject of ridicule (yet again), for not only losing 30-3 but also losing a doubleheader as well (that part is the cherry on top for this story). Perhaps someone will also throw in a heaping of, it even happened on the same day they named next year’s manager! Somehow, it may even be tied in with talk of the O’s run of 9+ losing seasons, a team in turmoil, etc. Some of that may be justified talk, but it has little bearing on a fluke game where one team scored 30 runs. And since it hasn’t happened since the 19th century, it is a genuine fluke. Just bear with it. It was one game, one awful doubleheader. Make some of your own jokes about it (like Roch has—hysterical stuff by the way) because what else is there to do?

Several pitchers got their ERAs and prides bruised. The team ERA sank, that whole favorable run differential is now looking like what the Diamondbacks have (they’re 72-56, you say, and have an unfavorable run differential? Um, well, I love stats but so much for them, I suppose), and probably the worst thing of all, the O’s got swept by Texas in a doubleheader at home.

I can be the most pessimistic person here, but a day like yesterday isn’t cause to check out, give up, write off the team. The team has a long way to go to be good, but there are at least some positive things happening: Bedard, Guthrie, Wieters, Markakis, Roberts, to name some. Hopefully, Trembley can show he’s the right man for the job, right the ship, and the team shakes it off.

King Erik: Right now, at this moment in the season, I rank those pitchers 1) Bedard, 2) Santana, 3) Beckett, 4) Haren. Overall, I rank them 1) Santana, 2) Bedard, 3) Haren, 4) Beckett. Santana is by far the best pitcher in baseball with several excellent years and two Cy Youngs to back it up.

When discussing this with Dimitrios yesterday, I neglected to notice that Beckett’s away stats are plain sick: 8-1 record, with a 1.65 ERA and .208 batting average against. Those are his away numbers? His overall numbers are a bit skewed then playing in hitter friendly Fenway. Those road numbers make him look even better for the Cy Young. I still hold to my rankings above; it’s not that these guys are miles apart but all are top-tier pitchers (and it is possible to pitch better in Fenway than Beckett has) and it would probably be hard to argue with any of them winning the Cy Young.

Anyone who wants to fire the manager after a fluke like is basically saying, "I know nothing about baseball."

About 25% of that was a poor effort by the O's and about 75% of it was a complete and utter fluke.

I watched every last pitch because it was absolutely amazing and we'll likely never see anything like it again. Talk about planets being aligned...

Sometimes you're the bug and sometimes you're the windshield.

Mark C, you still are clueless, I answered you. You're obviously ignoring what you posted & accused me of too. You seem to be the classic passive/aggressive type. Report back to potter that you ineptly attempted to do his bidding here.....

I agree with mikepreston.... the Rangers seemed to be trying a bit harder than necessary after awhile in game 1. Shuey should have brushed someone back to send a message, not hit anyone, but up & in with a quick look at their dugout would have sufficed.

I wouldn't worry about the affect on Wieters, but Roch, keep Amber away from him! Her trophy case is full enough....

I am not impressed with Olson. He looks like a perfect middle man, not to exposed to the lineup but one time. Throwing a fastball at 87-88, he better have pinpoint control. He doesn't. Frankly, I like Trachsel better. Anyone including him as one of the 5 starters next year should rethink.

Great welcome aboard & congrats the team gave Trembley yesterday huh?

Roch, be sure to point out that NY writer's headline to Bedard. That might make him rethink FA & going there & he might realize you guys are PG rated in Balmer compared to other places.
The Balmer press corp will always admire the Emperor's new robes....

Great comments, but remember 10 years of futility is not a fluke. Last night was a once in a lifetime meltdown, but the underlying cause has been the same.

I think we need to give Olson a few more starts before giving up on him as a starter. Remember John Maine? After a few starts people thought he didnt throw hard enough and we gave him away to the Mets. We cant make another mistake like that again. We have nothing to lose this year, so keep throwing Olson out there the rest of the season.

Roch,

OK, you have made me laugh many times before... and I honestly don't know if it is the mood I'm in or not but...
That first line (0-1 in 27 run games) just made me laugh out loud at work. I think I just got fired. I'm kidding. That was funny stuff though.

Later ...

1 to 0 or 101 to 0, it's still only a 1 in the loss column… unless you’re the pitching coach.
