Did that really happen?

All I can say is, thank goodness for that Matt Stover field goal last night, or it really could have been embarrassing.

30-3.

No matter how many times I write it or say it, the absurdity nearly overwhelms me.

30-3.

Who knew Daniel Cabrera would end up being the most effective pitcher?

And no, I don't believe the Rangers were piling on, though the on-side kick was a bit much.

30-3.

Brian Burres and Rob Bell are supposed to be the long men in the bullpen. I didn't know that meant making the games longer.

30-3.

No team had scored that many runs since 1900. And yes, I made a Julio Franco joke the minute it was announced.

30-3.

Manager Dave Trembley was misty eyed as he talked to reporters before Game 1 and recounted all the dues he paid in the minors - the long bus rides, the poor playing conditions, the altered lifestyle.

Then Game 1 began and he REALLY wanted to cry.

30-3.

Trembley walked into the interview room afterward and said, "If anyone has an intelligent question, ask it."

Boy, did he come to the wrong place!

The room fell silent. I was waiting for someone to say, "So...do you like...stuff?"

30-3.

I won't rip Trembley for leaving in his relievers too long. The guy had a second game to play. He needed someone to take one for the team so he wouldn't burn out the bullpen, but Burres and Bell didn't cooperate.

He had to wait. He had to hope someone would step up and restore a little order.

30-3.

This was no time to break out the Bradfords and Walkers. This was no time to mix-and-match. Erik Bedard wasn't pitching Game 2. We're talking Garrett Olson. There's no way Trembley could count on the rookie left-hander to give him seven or eight innings.

"We're talking about Garrett Olson. We're talking about Garrett Olson. Garrett Olson. Not Bedard, not Bedard, not Bedard. Garrett Olson."

Sorry, Allen Iverson just took over the blog for a few seconds. I'm back.

Whether it's 30-3 or 2-1, it still counts as one loss. A humiliating one, for sure, but one loss.

Nice save for Wes Littleton, by the way. Next, he'll save a kid from drowning in a Wet Nap.

Comments

You cant blame Trembley, they had to play another game right after it, so he had to save some of his bullpen for that. BLAME Burress and Bell, they were beyond terrible. and Shuey seems like a nice guy and all, but he shouldnt be pitching in the majors, period. Bring up some young guys from AAA and let them finish the year, dump Shuey and Bell.

But it was tough to watch last night, i started to laugh when it was 20-3, but then i just started thinking the game would never end in the 9th.
Very humiliating.

Bottom line, its not Trembleys fault the bullpen gave up 24 runs. 24 runs in 4 innings? is that possible? thank god football is starting soon or i'd hang myself.

So Roch, what was the score of yesterday’s Game 1 again?

... and on an unrelated note, I guess Al Gore is scratching Mike Mussina from his Christmas card list now:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070822/sc_afp/sciencenorwayclimate

I agree with last night being flukey, but it doesn't mean that no one should be concerned about it. I don't hold Trembley accountable for the 30 runs. The personnel is lacking though. Shuey has CLEARLY been done for months now. Burres has a very difficult time in this role. Bell despite his good attitude has also been subpar. And Cabrera, what can you say? His srikeout numbers aren't spectacular and he seems to be getting worse as his career progresses.

Why are guys like Shuey and Wright on our roster? The O's just can't stay away from the Salvation Army store can they? The one thing that scares me about Guthrie's success is that it reinforces that "nickel slots" mentality of this club. The sad thing is that I also have to refrain from calling them cheap because they end up dumping a fair amount of money into very average players.

We need an impact player (actually multiple impact players). Tejada was that 2-3 years ago. We still have no one that pitchers fear (except maybe BRob). I am not saying we don't have very good players like Markakis, Millar and Tejada but how often do they change the complexion of a game in one AB?

I still say that Ramon is either hurt or he has checked out mentally. Roch, any insight on Ramon's attitude/health?

Anyway, hopefully they got the really bad baseball out of their system. Not much time to lick the wounds.

The national sports media is finally recognizing the Orioles...seriously, I don't think they've been the lead story on SportsCenter all season until last night! Way to go O's! Oh wait.....

To be honest, I think this is just something you have to laugh about. The Rangers got lucky. They put up 30 runs and their lineup for game 2 featured 7 guys with BA below .250. Got to shake it off and not let it ruin the season.

The bigger problem is what is happening with the bullpen before the next game. We've got 3 relievers who aren't going to be available for a couple days (including both of the long men), Bradford has just thrown 2 innings, and Hoey has been overworked the past week. That leaves only Walker and Baez as guys you actually would be happy with throwing tonight. I think you actually have to DFA Shuey just to call up another reliever (Doyne?). Whichever long man has an option left goes to AAA for the minimum amount of time and you call up Birkins or Johnson to be the long man for a week or two.

The problem isn't with the 2 losses yesterday, it's with the potentially catastrophic effects in the next few games if another starter has a short outing.

Remember reading about Bears and Redskins 73-0 years ago in post-season? Any given game...

As one who saw every pitch from Section 16, Row JJ, I can tell you the atmosphere in the park was terrific. The crowd changed from being upset with Daniel to incredulous to a big OMG, but not a boo in the bunch and a whole lot of great one-liners.

And, for the second game, which was a thriller to the end, the few hundred of us who stayed all the way roared, sang, and cheered, although 9-7 seemed like a duel compared to the opener.

If you love baseball, you've gotta relax when things go wild and not just look for someone to blame. Take it easy. Despite Wednesday night, they are getting better. Get over it.

If the Oriole sound guys had any humor last night after the 30-3 destruction a little REM "Everybody Hurts" would have been appropriate!

WOW! HOW EMBARRASSING!!!!!!!! Thats all you can say. Lets see what Dave Trembley and Brian Roberts have to say about the fans now. Now they probably realize why the fans are so sick of the team. Do you think they can actually blame the fans for not showing up to the games, or leaving the games early, or rooting for the other teams. This team is the laughing stock all over the sports news. It was pathetic. I love the Orioles but after that game, I embarrassed to be an Orioles fan. I'm officially done with this team for the rest of the year. No more watching on TV.

Roch,
What were the players saying and how were they feeling after the game? Were you able to get any comments? I would love to hear what Roberts was saying.

Let's not forget how the fans were treated last night.

Despite having tickets, some of us couldn't get off work in time to get to the 5:05 game. Arriving for the second game...after enduring the 30-3 loss on the radio...we were fans enough to go in for the 2nd game and show our support.

When we walked in, everything was being shut down...in the bottom of the first inning! No food, no beer, no peanuts, nothing. 9:18pm. Of the 1 concession stand that was still open, stood a cup of fries that had clearly been there since the 6th inning of the first game. I threw my fitted 1983 retro O's hat in the trash on the way out in front of the gate attendants.

Thanks Peter...thanks for nothing. I just put my O's/Red Sox tickets on eBay. Enough is enough. It breaks my heart, but I just can't support this team anymore...

So who starts Saturday now? I thought perhaps it'd be Bell or Burress, but they won't do that NOW will they? They won't do that with the stink of Game 1 still on the two of them, will they?

This is just an aberation and the sting f it will be gone a lot quicker than the sting of the 0 - 21 start or the 4 - 36 finish. S&!* happens. Somedays you eat the bear and somedays it eats you, etc., etc.

What I was wondering was why Trembley didn't go down the bench and ask who wanted to have a shot at being a pitcher?

Seriously, after the 10 run inning we might have wished we had given Wieters a major league contract so we could have warmed him up.

I remember a 7 HR, 14 run blowout loss in Toronto where the O's either were about to or had just played a DH.

Weaver pitched Elrod hendricks and I think Len Sakata and maybe even Lowenstein.

I know Canseco blew out his arm doing this with the Rangers, but Canseco was probably trying to throw the gyro ball or hit 100 on the radar. We didn't need anything fancier than a warm body.

It would have saved the bullpen some if we had pitched a "non-pitcher" in the last 3 innings.

AND - why does something bizzare like this always seem to happen against Texas?????

Roch, I was there and saw both games. It was probably one of the most painful, but most fun nights of my life.

After the 23rd run given up, my section just started rooting for the Texas Rangers.

It was hard to believe, but perhaps it was one in those once-in-a-lifetime events.

We got to see history, at least.

Too bad it had to happen to us...

30-3!! yikes, embarrassing loss yes......... but the o's are still the only team that has not been shut out this season. so there. :o)

30-3 is totally the Orioles fault: Do Not Mess With Wild Bill Hagy or he will have his way with your pitchers...

"The Orioles had planned to observe a moment of silence in his memory Monday night but their game against the Texas Rangers was rained out."

TOM D,

I remember Larry Harlow pitching that game against the Blue Jays three decades ago.

I’m not sure Sakata (that roster spot was known as “Kiko Garcia" in those days) and Lowenstein were with the team yet.

I think it was Elrod Hendricks and Larry Harlow.

This is Rick Maese's fault for writing that negative article yeaterday.

Not that I'm trying to dominate today's blog, but here's a recap of that blowout loss to the Blue Jays in Toronto on June 26, 1978.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/TOR/TOR197806260.shtml

I remember it kind of put a damper on my birthday. I hit double-digits (10 years old) the next day.

Tom D: I’m guessing Trembley didn’t go down the bench because this was a doubleheader. I imagine he wanted to keep as many players as possible fresh for the second game, even if they’re just pitching to a few batters.

JPA: I think the pitching staff has big questions, 30 runs or not. It could’ve been 10-3 and the same questions would still be there. Paul Shuey shouldn’t be a major league pitcher. Daniel Cabrera is unpredictable as always and last night’s performance was much like other games this season (without as many walks). Maybe Burres should be starting, not relieving. And Bell just might be another in a long line of mediocre relievers. In the second game, Olson showed he’s still young and we don’t know if we can expect him to be a good starter, and Hoey showed he’s still young too (though he’s pitched well otherwise in this current callup). Lots of questions, but none we shouldn’t have known before yesterday. And, yes, this team needs multiple impact players if it wants to compete. This has been the case for quite some time (we keep harping about it to the dismay of everyone else :).

Shuey took one for the team. He went out for the ninth after giving up 3 ER in the eighth. I agree , he hasn't been the same for months, & probably shouldn't be on the team now, but he earned some respect in an odd way, last night.
Trembley had no choice. Why burn up the pen? To lose 25-3 or 27-3 instead? That would have been idiotic.
I am far less thrilled with Burres' & Bell's effort. One of them could go back to Norfolk for 8 days & we could all say fine.
The Rangers have several nobodies & guys recently inserted to the regular lineup, they didn't know any better probably, add to that, they smelled blood & padded stats. A more veteran team might have backed off some. Still , if I am Shuey, I buzz someone to send a message perhaps.
Forget this one. The team played hard in the second game & that showed alot. Focus on that & not the first game.....

R.I.P. - Orioles dignity. We hardly knew you.
Markakis was almost drafted as a pitcher. Why didn't he pitch the 9th? Or for that matter, are the bat boys on the roster?
Did anyone else feel the Rangers were just rubbing it in for the 9th inning? Talk about pouring salt in a wound, then adding vinegar, then looking for a match.
Trembley is very glad to have been given the full time job right before the game. He sure wouldn't have been given it after.
Did the Rangers also set a record for most infield hits in a game? Just wondering.

I have to agree with Anthony. I was there last night and the game was painful at first, but sometimes you just have to say that crud happens and deal with it. It actually got to be a bit entertaining once the game reached ridiculous proportions!

I'd still take losing a game like that over the Mother's Day Massacre. Last night was just one of those shoulder shruggers...but I still don't think my blood pressure has ever fully returned to normal after the Massacre.

I'm less concerned with dropping a series to the Rangers (second time we've done that this year) than I am with the fact that Baez is the only pitcher in our bullpen that we didn't use yesterday and unless Trax goes 8-9 we could be in some serious trouble to start off against the Twinkies.

Hey, it's only one game of course but I agree with those who suggested a little chin music. The Rangers were obviously digging in a little too much.
This isn't the '27 Yankee lineup and it was already filled with backups. No one expects them to strike out on purpose but taking close pitches and extra bases goes beyond the 'unwritten rules' of sportsmanship.
Shuey be released immediately as he serves no useful purpose, unless
we are keeping him around to pad the opposition's stats.
I would also give Olsen one more start and if he doesn't pitch effectively, tthen off to middle relief or the minors.
Trembley preaches respect the game but sending out hurlers who are clearly out of their league violates this. We owe it to the fans and teams that are competing for a playoff berth to at least put a competitive team out there. I'm all for experimenting etc but last night was an embarassment, all jokes aside.
This will be Trembley's first test(not counting Tejada's request to skip stretching 'class') to see if they don't go into the tank as other teams have done.

The bottom line is that Rob Bell was never that good and Paul Shuey is very much past his prime. These 2 had their moments but over the course of the season they have been exposed for what they are - not good. Brian Burress will bounce back from this but we need to get rid of Bell and Shuey - I'd rather watch some young guys not get anyone out. 30-3 is a fluke - the Rangers could hit off a tee and probably wouldn't score that many runs in a nine inning game.

House should catch. What do we have to lose? Bako is respected as a leader (according to Millar) and a veteran, etc. etc. So he gets some mileage there. But what better chance to see if House is unworkable behind the plate or only below average? If it is the latter, then he is a much more valuable player to us or other teams since he saves having to have a 3rd catcher on the roster and he could even serve as the #2. Only one way to find out.

And, yeah, he had an awful at bat with the bases loaded, but let's see him after 50-75 ABs and after 8 or 10 games behind the plate.

Texas should have rested their starters, but only because it was smart, not because they are supposed to do it out of some sort of chivalry.

Canseco may have ruined the chances for any position player to ever pitch again. But, I remember that Billy and Cal could throw decent knucklers. They don't hurt the arm supposedly.

The 30-3 debacle overshadowed what was a much more difficult defeat to swallow in game 2. That one was a daggone shame and another troubling case of not being able to hold a lead in the 7th or 8th innings. Palmer was all over Hoey for getting beat with his slider instead of sticking with fastballs.

If there is anything that could possibly make it worse, it's that a context was established the day that Wild Bill died and we all had our memories jogged about what fun we had at the ballpark and what having a winning team was like.
.....and then we were hit with this.
Today's game will say a lot.

Don't forget in the 90s when everyone's favorite player, Shortstop Manny Alexander came in to pitch when I believe the score was something like 24-2...against...you guessed it the Texas Rangers.

Kevin B --- don't know what game you were at, but the peanut guy was all over the place, late; and we got pretzels around 11 PM + and the other stuff was open, ground level concourse.

The Scene: Dave Trembley's office following O's doubleheader sweep to lowly Rangers.

In walk Daniel Cabrera, Rob Bell, Brian Burres, Garrett Olson and Paul Shuey.

Trembley: Where are the others _ Hoey, Baez and Walker?

Cabrera: We looked everywhere for them Dean Trembley.

Trembley: Have you boys seen your ERAs?

Cabrera: They're not posted yet, sir.

Trembley: I have them right here. Mr. Cabrera, five innings, 9 hits, six runs, 1 walk, four strikeouts, two HRs given up. A 5.10 ERA for the season. A fine example you set. Mr. Bell, 1 -1/3 innings pitched 5 hits, seven runs, 3 walks, 1 strikeout, 2 HRs given up. Congratulations Mr. Bell, you're at the top of the Orioles bullpen. Mr. Burres, 2/3 inning pitched, 8 runs, 8 hits, 1 walk, 1 strikeout, 1 HR given up. Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.

Mr. Olson, has no ERA. All games incomplete. Too many walks .... Mr. Shuey (with pencils in nose) ... 9.49 ERA ...

Now I want you to tell Mr. Hoey, Walker and Baez exactly what I'm about to tell you

Cabrera: What's that, sir?

Trembley: You're OUT!! Finished with the Baltimore Orioles. I want you out of Camden Yards by 9 a.m. Monday morning .... And I'm sure you'll all be glad to know that I've informed your agents that you are all now eligible for Independent League service.

Burres face begins to bubble ...

Trembley: You have something to say ... Well? ... Out with it!

Splat....

I think everyone would agree you just have to move on as if this never happened.

Exception: Paul Shuey. I think it's time to close the book on that experiment. Bell and Burres could be very useful next season. Shuey, not so much. Get him out of here and bring back Corey Doyne or someone that might be able to contribute in the future.

Retaining Trembley is a mistake... we need to look at other options. Yet again we fire a manager midseason the replacement has a few good weeks we name him the permanent manager and become the laughing stock of baseball. atleast interview other people this is a mistake to name him manager this early.

On a side note: I think the Orioles have been recalled for containing too much lead. Damn poorly made Chinese products

Can we finally acknowledge the elephant in the room. It's Angelos's fault. He has ruined this team on so many levels. Is there anyway to seriously remove him as owner?

So do we waive Shuey and Bell now?!? Also concerned about Burres' mind set after being whipped around like they were last night.

I hate to push AAA/AA pitchers to the roster, but Bell and Shuey cannot do the job.

I am digusted with the performance in that game...let's really think about this as it was truly 30 runs in 6 innings as we had a 3-0 lead at the end of the 3rd.

Let's hope the rest of the team can rebound and win 3 of 4 this weekend.

It's only one loss... heck the Yankees lost a game 22-0 in 2005... the Birds still haven't been shut out... and how 'bout Kevin Millar tying Ken Singleton's club record in Game 2? And congrats to Dave Trembley, next season the Orioles will start the season with an experienced competent manager.

If that wasn't the most egregious act of running the score up by an opposing team in all of sports history
then I am totally bonkers. For the Ranger manager to make one substitution , according to the Sun, the whole game is inexcusable. Yes I know all the counter dicta about it's the O's job to keep the score down butone substitution cannot be overlooked as a coincidence.I understand it's the order of the day to crack on the o'S but that was serious
unsportsmanlike conduct by the Rangers if sportsmanlike conduct is still has a place even in pro sports.

The O's have hit rock bottom! As if there wasn't enough to be embarrassed about for us O's fans - a million year (slight exaggeration) consecutive losing season streak etc., just visit any major news related web-site - "O's lose 30-3" . . .

Can football get here soon enough?

Wow is about all you can say. Posts by Joe and Tracy put it in true perspective - one of those nights - just let it go.

"Can football get here soon enough?"

Judging by that score, I'd say it's already arrived.

never thought i'd say this, but thank god i was counting inventory and missed this game.

i'm more pissed we blew the 2nd game. (i have the txt message to prove it)

Here's the link to a bunk column by Ken Rosenthal on the 30-3 debacle.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7147638?MSNHPHMA

The commentors here who term this one loss, bad yes, but just one loss, are the apt ones. It's something you take to the stomach, then move on. Rosenthal calls this a new low for the O's, and that's so off. Losing 21 in a row in 1988, that's the ebb.

A nice series with the Twins will turn the page on this loss and return to the second half improvement displayed on the field.

last night was the most fun i have had at camden yards ever!!!! oldtime doubleheader and alot different outcome from the one that i went to in 1974 against the oakland a's the piching matchup that day was vida blue and catfish hunter for oakland and for the ORIOLES it was palmer and cuellar . the tickets were $ 4.00 in section 38 box seats and last night i paid $6.00 and still sat in the box seats 6000 fans. last night ORIOLE MAGIC IS BACK!!!!!!!

Embarrasing - you bet - for the Texas Rangers! What a way to go into the record book! It's a fact that no one living has seen 30 runs put up by one team in a major league baseball game. One could also make a case that last night's effort by the Rangers was the most flagrant example of running up the score in a MLB game since 1897. The Orioles had clearly waved the white flag and were throwing batting practice, yet the Rangers were still gleefully pounding the ball like it was the home run derby before the All-Star game - juvenile. Ron Washington should have told his players after the first home run in the 8th inning that he didn't want to see anyone else swinging for the fences. If this wasn't running up the score then would someone please offer some explanation for how it is that with the score at 27-3 the #9 hitter strokes a 3-run homer with 2 out in the 9th inning to put a nice round 30 up on the board. Might as well be in a basketball game ahead 108 to 18 and close out the game with a reverse slam dunk at the buzzer. Character credit goes to the Orioles for NOT throwing knockdown pitches.
