Looking back and ahead
Just as I vowed never to use the words "Mora" and "bunt" again in the same sentence, the same goes for "Thorne" and "sock."
And here's hoping I'll never need to write "Pena" and "fastball" again.
It's really hard to get an accurate reading on how far Pena's ball traveled last night unless you factor in the layover in Charlotte.
The stadium radar gun routinely had Adam Loewen's fastball clocked at 89 mph. Seems a little low to me, but manager Sam Perlozzo didn't sound concerned. He noted that Loewen usually stays around 89-92 with his two-seamer. He certainly was on the low end last night.
The good news: The Orioles won two of three games at Jacobs Field last season.
The reality: They're 15-39 in the ballpark since it opened, and have lost 22 of the last 27.
On Sept. 3, 2000, Chris Richard matched a club record with 13 total bases, but the Orioles lost, 12-11, when Kenny Lofton homered in the 13th inning. Lofton stole five bases that day.
Ah, the memories.
I'm equally warmed by the recollection of that makeup game a few years ago, when the Orioles traveled to Cleveland for a one-game series and were blown out. Afterward, Luis Lopez spotted a small group of reporters standing in the clubhouse and yelled, "Ask your questions and get out!"
My first question: "What are you still doing in the majors?"
Did you know the Orioles lost 25 of their first 26 games in Cleveland, including an 0-11 record at Municipal Stadium in 1954? The Indians set a major league record by scoring eight runs without an out on July 6, 1954.
Afterward, Luis Lopez spotted a small group of reporters and...
Nevermind.
The Orioles must think the Indians' current rotation belongs to a 12-and-under team after they faced Curt Schilling and Josh Beckett the last two games. This series almost feels like a reprieve - except it's being played in Cleveland.
I won't make any predictions, but if the Orioles take two of three, they should cover the lockers in plastic and break out the champagne.
Would it surprise anyone to know that John Parrish routinely is the first Oriole to arrive at Camden Yards each day? The guy's already there at 1 p.m. for a 7:05 p.m. start.

Roch, O's are 3rd to last in MLB (last in AL) in walks with 97; Sox are 2nd in MLB (1st in AL) with only 54. Last year they finished second to last in the AL and 5th to last in MLB. The walks are KILLING this team. Is that really Leo Mazzone that I see rocking in the dugout every night, or just a really convincing replica that Sammy bought from Madame Tussaud's?

I guess Parrish just loves those new flat screens in the clubhouse or else he doesn't like to eat with Roberts at Hooters.

I'm sick of the losing culture around this team and I'm sick of the losing culture that infects me as a lifelong fan. As soon as Corey Patterson went back to second base on Monday night, I just knew we would lose the next four games. What is wrong with me?
Posted by: Dean | April 27, 2007 10:40 AM
What's with all the grand slams? And why does Chris Ray give up so many of them??
Posted by: PAUL.R | April 27, 2007 10:56 AM
I hate to say so, but I knew that Bunt game would send them into a slump. I stated as much then....

Dean-
There is nothing wrong with you. That is the life of an O's fan (until proven differently).
Go O's

Has anybody noticed that the much coveted Mark Teixeira is hitting .213 and hasn't hit a home run this year in 75 AB's, and has only driven in 3 runs!?
Posted by: Deke | April 27, 2007 11:18 AM
Roch-Great comeback to Lopez!!!Don't you just love these prima donnas giving the media the attitude? Many of the these guys should be thankful they're in the bigs period without acting like #$%.
Maybe Parrish can talk some of his teammates into getting there early too and work on their control and hitting!!
By the way, how's the clubhouse chemistry these days? The real test is when the O's are in the midst of a losing streak..easy to be huggy/kissy when you win 8 of 9.
Posted by: TerryP | April 27, 2007 11:32 AM
Brian, please tell me you're lying about Roberts eating at Hooters. Please.
As a relatively newbie O's fan (three years), I can't fathom the emotional rollercoaster you all have been on over the years. I'll just keep the spunky optimism... there's no reason the boys can't turn it around. We can handle the Jake.

Dean, I predicted a 7 game losing streak after Patterson's debacle. What's wrong with me?
Posted by: eric | April 27, 2007 11:38 AM
Roch, I thought it was held up by weather over Philly.
What was the movie on that flight?
Major League!
All Chris Ray needs are some Coke-bottle glasses and a mohawk! When he comes in in Cleveland he should plunk the mascot and the first batter he faces.

All this talk about the revamped bullpen, and i dont feel safe bringing anyone out of the pen right now, especially not Ray who is starting to look like Benitez/Julio by just throwing fastballs over the middle of the plate.
Its still very early in the season but things just dont look good. I 100% knew they were going to lose that game last night, no lead is ever safe. and i was at the Yankees game with the Giambi and Arod fiasco. terrible to be an O's fan in NY.
Posted by: spats | April 27, 2007 11:44 AM
I do not have a problem with Ray throwing Pena a fastball.
Almost all major league hitters are "fastball hitters" and are sitting on dead red. But Ray is not out there to throw breaking balls or change-ups.
It might not hurt him to occasionally change-up, but you really want him bringing the heat. If you want someone in there to throw breaking balls then bring someone else in.
The problem with Pena wasn't the pitch, it was the location.

Bloodgate 2007: Is it all behind us now?
OK, so the bloody sock thing got me to thinking - How about a top 10 of best bloody sports memorabilia?
You could have Shill's Sock, George Brett's boxers from the 1980 World Series, YA Tittle's bloody helmet, Evander Holyfield's ear bandage.... Well, could someone else maybe fill out the rest...I am starting to gross myself out!
Posted by: BeerMan Cold Beer | April 27, 2007 11:45 AM
Dean - whatever is wrong with you is affecting me as well. Every night after I check out the box score I swear to never look at it again, but every morning I wake up with a glimmer of optimism born out of being a life-long fan. Its embarassing.
Ortiz, Manny, anyone else hits that HR and I think, "fine, they're just good hitters" but Willy "strike-out-Mo-times-than-you-can-count" Pena?! Unbelievable.

So MASN finally has an audio level that is almost hearable? Well, let's stand up & cheer, they have achieved something that most beginner video production classes in college do in the first week. It only took them a month. HD? I won't hold my breath. That upsets me much more than the bullpen.

Jill, welcome to town!
Roberts claims he eats lunch every day the team is home (and not playing a day game) at the inner harbor and he usually eats outside on nice days. He favors Hooters. Must be the cheese fries.
Now, remember, most guys do not find drool to be atractive.

Orioles5fan, No one really knows if Babe Ruth pointed to center field or towards the Chicago dugout before he hit the home run. The press said it and then everybody believed it. I think the Orioles should have kept Babe Ruth in Baltimore where he belonged instead of selling him to Boston. But then the Yankees were stupid for selling him back to Boston at the end of his carreer. Then Boston was stupid for not making him their manager like they promised. Ruth is still waiting for that phone call.

Roch, the O’s seem to have a lot of negative streaks similar to losing 22 of last 27 at Jacobs Field and losing 22 of last 25 against the Red Sox. If you’re wanting signs of improvement, turning these kinds of things around would be a place to start. But let’s not forget the fact that Cleveland is currently in first place in the AL Central and a team that many have predicted might take that division this year. Another formidable opponent. Will the O’s rise to the occasion? Can anyone remember the last time they did? Look at the bright side: after 10 games against Cleveland and Detroit, they get a three game set against Tampa Bay!
JPA: To depress you even further, I was going to add that, probably by the end of May, we’ll be counting the days to Ravens’ training camp. That’s the usual method around town now for determining the unofficial start of summer. I’m eagerly hoping that the O’s prove me wrong; I’m resigned to the fact that they won’t.
Tom D: Good point about the Yankees. If you think the O’s and their fans are feeling glum right now, think about the Yankees and their fans. Just think how bad things are in Yankee land—they haven’t won a World Series since 2000! Oh, the pain and misery they must be enduring! The Yankees, unlike the O’s, are expected to be good. I do think the Yankees, unfortunately, will get things together enough to be at minimum in the playoff hunt.

LOL, good one Tom D.
I still say Roch has some sort of deal going with the Inner Harbor eateries based on increased lunch sales.
I guess we can thank Gary Thorne for saving the FO the time & trouble on trying to sign Schilling to pitch here next year, even if they had the idea in mind.

There are two things I'm looking forward to tonight that I know will happen. One; buying the brand new Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) cd. He's back after thirty years. Two; seeing the beautifull Amber Theoharis on MASN. I don't always remember what she says though.
Posted by: Bill In Elkton | April 27, 2007 1:18 PM
Tom D,
Chris Ray BETTER be out there to throw a changeup or a breaking ball, in addition to his fastball -- and with regularity. Otherwise, his days in this league with success are numbered. Let's face it: his fastball ain't Papelbon's. He better get a changeup along the lines of what Lidge and Foulke used to throw... and fast.

Optimism in the face of great odds is one thing. Optimism in the face of great odds and Sammy P managing your team, well friends, that is a whole other set of problems.
Posted by: orioledale | April 27, 2007 1:25 PM
The question/problem is: What happens if these guys prove they can't win? Tear the team apart AGAIN? Sell off the good players and get bums in return like last time, or the last several times? And then wait for another 5 year plan to fail?
Some of us will be dead by then.
Posted by: tvdpdx | April 27, 2007 1:36 PM
Looking at these posts, I'm seeing that some of you so called fans hate this team...
after the 0-3 start if someone offered me 11-11 I'd freaking take it. If the fans suck so will the team. Quit crying and get into the fact that we're going to have to fight for everything we get.
And by the way, Perlozzo is really not that far off the mark here.
Roch- Is that a true story about Lopez. Sounds like you should take on the Phil's manager next if it is!!!!
What I love about baseball is you only get 21 hours to cry about a loss.
Watch Roberts climb to .260 by Sunday. Don't be haters, we're winning 81 games this season, guaranteed.
Posted by: o's fan in san fran | April 27, 2007 1:48 PM
can we please not worry about where these guys eat lunch? I told you, Roberts at .260 by Sunday.
Posted by: o's fan in san fran | April 27, 2007 1:51 PM
Tom D--Do you ever watch non-Oriole games? There is decent baseball going on outside of the empty confines of Camden Yards (except NY/BOS games of course--sickening replays of that grand slam where the entire lower deck is celebrating!!). No self-respecting closer would have tried to pump all fastballs by Pena unless you have a sick cutter like Rivera (which is not quite a fastball). Rediculous. Plus, like I said why do you put yourself in that situation. Varitek IS a guy you could have challenged. Bleh.
Being an O's fan is a chronic condition. Jill, you should be thankful that it's only been 3 years. Maybe Cal will get the team in 10 years and you will only have 13 years of pitiful management. Actually Cal is just as likely to be bad as good but 50% or completely unknown is better than 100% awful. Then again the management isn't walking people, the management did not lie to Congress, the management does not hit in clutch situations, and the management does not make head-scratching bullpen moves. It would be easy to blame one person or group, but all of this losing has taken on a life of its own. I truly though Tejada could help snap us out of it. If he had, we would have looked back at the 98-04 years as a blip on the radar. Unfortunately, the organization has found bigger and better ways to embarass itself every year since then.
Will it be a successful year if we just suck in a quiet and unnoticeable fashion?
They can't even give away tix anymore. The promotions in September will be: if you wear something orange, or have an orange spray-on tan, or just like oranges you can buy a ticket for $3 and we'll throw in a few hotdogs. Actually, they would probably be more successful if they just turned the entire complex into a restaurant with giant HD screens that play out-of-town games. Okay, I'm seriously not this bitter usually.
Posted by: JPA | April 27, 2007 1:56 PM
Terrible last night. But I wonder what Perlozzo is thinking half the time. As soon as he started to have Varitek walked I smelled trouble. I HATE when they walk a batter with 0 or 1 out to load the bases for a double play. If 3rd was open then fine, but in that situation he should have pitched and hoped for a K. Pitching with the bags full is different and you have no room for error. And whats with bringing relievers in for 1 batter. ughhhh
Posted by: Jeremy S. | April 27, 2007 2:06 PM
Lets not forget Joe Theisman's uniform from his last game - now that was nasty! I watched it live but could never sit still to watch the replays. LT took him down for the count....
Posted by: beermancoldbeer | April 27, 2007 2:21 PM
Roch, maybe you can be like Schilling and offer a $1,000,000 dare for the Orioles to actually WIN.
Then, to just sweeten the pot a little bit, dare the team to win at least this series to the Indians and 2 out of 3 in the Tigers series.
What do you think? Wouldn't that reverse the losing culture? That would be worth 1 million dollars.
Posted by: Ben | April 27, 2007 2:37 PM
we need more unfettered optimists like you, jill. o's karma is bad right now. could be all the law suit $$ from angelos.
Posted by: brian f | April 27, 2007 2:48 PM
You are soooo right, Tom D. It was all about Ray's location. It seems like it is always about Ray's location. He is hanging the ball out there in the middle of the plate sometimes.
What's with our younger pitchers not being able to pitch out of the stretch? I noticed that the last couple of games. It seems that they can't always get the ball over the plate. (Cabrera, Loewen, Ray.) Is this a question that you can ask the team, Roch? I wonder how much pitchers actually work on pitching out of the stretch...
Posted by: thebigdmoney | April 27, 2007 3:07 PM
Too bad the O's can't count the times they beat themselves as wins, they'd only have like 2 losses at this point!
It is amazing how as recently as Monday afternoon, the 'fans' were high on the birds, now, after 4 games of sandlot errors and swinging at bad pitches, it's the same old thing from the fans.
One last thing....
It has to be tough to play hard when you are in your whites, and the fans cheer louder for the guys in their road grays. I do feel sorry for the players, but petey is now reaping what he has sowed for the last 9 years. Now if everyone could do as I do, and DVR the game, start it about 35 minutes later than first pitch, you NEVER have to watch any of the commercials he uses to fund a big part of that sub-standard garbage he passes off as a sports network. MASN (the mister angelos sports network)
Posted by: BiggSeth | April 27, 2007 3:14 PM
I LIKE that biggseth MASN ----mister angelos sports network
Theismann just wasn't as marketing savy as the suxs & Schilling.... he actually had some bone sticking through his sock & plenty of blood.
Someone needs to tell poor Amber she is not auditioning for Amercrombie & Fitch , she is on a network doing sports, such as it is, & that she needs to try getting tops that fit, one size larger would probably do the trick. They look like they were spray painted on, probably by Schilling & the boys....
Posted by: Brian | April 27, 2007 3:39 PM
Brian, hey, why not just have Amber be our model for MASN? After all, she's probably the only reason the guys tune into the game for, haha.
All seriousness aside, I think the O's need to get a solid win tonight vs Westbrook... so far, aside from his last outing, he looks like a B.P. pitcher. GO O's!
Posted by: Ben | April 27, 2007 3:50 PM
Ready for another sweep folks? At least as Orioles fans you have the luxury of knowing what is going to happen to your team. Baseball is not very unpredictable if you follow the bird poop from Baltimore. I will say this however, if that offense can wake up, if Huff starts hitting for average, if Brob keeps raising that average, if the whole team can just hit with two outs or with RISP, your team will do a whole lot better and will not be sweating bullets towards the end of games. Goodluck vs Cleveland, and always remember to practice safe sex. And thanks for commenting on what I have to say, it proves you indeed read my comments......idiot

More bloody items.....
Brendan Donnelly's jersey that night he almost nose-bled to death after a line drive to the nose...
Torii Hunter's towel the other night after getting beaned in the mouth...
AND YES....Paul Bako's catcher's mask... that HAS to qualify!
Posted by: Alan in VA | April 27, 2007 4:29 PM
all of a sudden the relievers can't pitch the starters can't throw strikes. The pitching staff is in shambles. All Leo can do is rock back and forth in the dugout. The hitters can't hit either and Crowley just stands in the dugout looking just as lost as the hitters. Why did Cabrera throw 11 straight curveballs and get only 1 or 2 over. This team looks more and more like the Bad News Bears. Welcome back Ramon maybe he can help in both areas because this team needs a big spark fast. And I see Tejada not running out ground balls again. Sam needs to pull him in the middle of the game and put Bynum or Gomez in.
Posted by: Dave | April 27, 2007 4:41 PM
I agree, Ray has to use his slider. 2 grand slams in a month, zero in the great Jim Palmer's career. If you don't think he was great just ask him.
