Fifth starter

Joey Buttafuoco has been released from jail.

I know there's a joke in there somewhere, and it probably involves the Bengals.

I just checked with Sun beat writer Jeff Zrebiec, who says the Orioles haven't confirmed whether Jeremy Guthrie will take Jaret Wright's place in the rotation. The Orioles won't need a fifth starter for about 10 days, so they're flush with long relievers in the meantime.

And hey, you can never have enough left-handers, so welcome aboard, Kurt Birkins.

Let's see, that's Birkins, Jamie Walker, John Parrish and Brian Burres.

It wouldn't surprise me if Jesse Orosco and Mark Thurmond have been contacted, as well.

That's another new MLB rule you might not be aware of: The team with the most left-handed relievers wins the World Series.

Just when you think the Orioles have run out of strained oblique muscles, they had to put Double-A Bowie outfielder Nolan Reimold on the disabled list because of one. A team official confirmed it yesterday, in case you missed The Sun's minor league notebook that ran today.

Reimold had raised his average 46 points by batting .381 with six RBIs in 21 at-bats.

Is there any new news on Rob Bell? You mentiioned him in the last post. I'd love to see him up in Baltimore and Birkins back in Norfolk. Although perhaps Scott Williamson will be healthy before Bell is.

Shame about Nolan Reimold's injury. All I can say is keep him away from Hayden Penn.

I'm surprised there aren't more oblique injuries in the O's system, you know? I mean...after swinging and hacking at every single pitch (especially the first few in the dirt)...it takes a toll on the body.

Luckily these guys golf in the off season, otherwise I'd be real scared....

Can we get a mulligan on some of those pitches?

4-man rotation?

ok, we don't know who's gonna replace wright, but who's gonna replace wright's bad shoulder with a good one? And why would they? Anyway, after listening to NY radio today, it seems as though Wright is the exact opposite of Pavano. he may never come off the DL. Ever.

Lindsay - way to see the bright side with Juilo. That does put losing Maine into perspective. I hope I don't end up feeling the same way about Ray. The sight of him is starting to make me nervous. It's great for him that he has a short memory but what about the rest of us? And thanks for the info on Penn - always so much to learn from you guys.

I think Brian Burres earned a shot at the 5th starter position with his outing on Sunday. I thought his ability to change speeds was excellent. Guthrie seemed to be throwing more than pitching.

Wow 12 pitch AB's?

Do the Orioles lead the league in walking the first batter of the game? Could our staff be any more self-destructive? Good work Maz.

Daniel is back to his old tricks. Why are the Pitchers not just throwing strikes instead of picking at the corners. The Umps are not calling it this year,MLB wants the offense to pick up so the strike zone has to shrink. It is also unbelievable how they are still swinging at the first pitch still,do they not learn anything. I agree that Crow needs to be let go,I want someone that teaches patients at the plate, especially Tejada and Patterson. Gibbons has become an automatic out. Time to cut our losses on him and let him go else where,I would rather have DeBois or Knott here right now.

thats about right. 8 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk vs. 4 hits, 5 runs, 6 walks. Nice. Go O's!!

i'd make cabrera pitch the entire game tonite, i don't care if he gives up 12 runs and throws 160 pitches. This is insane.

Whenever I see video of Perlozzo in the dugout he always looks scared/confused/lost. I feel like a few losses this season are in direct correlation to the look on his face.

Brad Pennington is warming up now. And Kevin Hickey is being pulled from the roster of a legends game.

i see Mr Clubhouse , K Millar, has begun the griping. Happy happy clubhouse, for all of a week. Such overrated malarky anyway. Let's see how this plays out.

true story:

I'm at my friends house (no mlb extra innings) I notice that the brewers look better than us.

I run home hoping to catch some action in a 5-4 game.

Ist batter sheff: walk
next ordonez: slap double
next: next wild pitch

Might be time for Shark Redwings.

Still I will not lose hope. We DO have three possible great pitchers. These starters will learn to throw strikes.

It looked like the pitch Cabrera threw at sheff was 56 miles an hour. Did he soften up on that? How about hitting Corey Patterson in the two slot against righties. He's striking out the least and he looks good from the left side? Anybody? Bueller?

the o's will catch tb by the end of the week.
the cellar dwelling yanks by the weekend.
Last place will be all OURS! At long last !!

Hey Roch, If that's what it takes to get to the World Series bring back Tippy Martinez, Grant Jackson, and Pete Richert!

Didn't see it, but Tejada had a big error early in the game tonight. Just think the Orioles need to change the face of this team. When things go bad he's always in the center of it. Errors, failure to cover the bag, forgetting how many outs there are in an inning, and not running out ground balls are not what you expect for 13 million. Trust me, as a long time coach, when your star player(the guy you most count on and whom young players look to) does these things, it saturates the team. It brings them down. Especially, when you are struggling and your star should be doing things to pull you out of a funk.

We may not get full value for him, but come trade deadline the Angels will still package Santana and Aybar for Tejada. I'm not sold on Santana. How about Weaver? Aybar is highly touted.

Bmore, that's his natural look. I've refrained from bashing him this year. Once again, just not enough good players.

Detroit is tough. It'll take a team effort to beat them. Loewen better get some good rest tonight.

Boston is running away with this thing.

!!!&&R(E^*^^^!!!!

Bring the cartoon bird back and the swagger comes with it. Without the swagger we can't be the upstart.

Tomorrow's lineup

1. B Roberts
2. Patterson
3. Tejada
4. Hernandez
5. Markakis
6. Payton
7. Millar or Roch (1st base)
8. Mora
9. Gomez (DH)

Okay, I am losing confidence in the ability for Mazzone to lead this pitching staff. The number of walks our pitchers throw is unreal. 8 more walks tonight...more walks than hits allowed.

Why would a pitcher throw at a punch and judy rally killer like Tejada? I guess he made a feeble attempt to go after Bonderman but had second thoughts...Bonderman would eat his lunch!
I wish Tejada would show that same 'fire' going after ground balls and/or jogging down the line or at least get his head in the game and keep track of the outs.
Sounds like another pathetic game and once again our durable starters went a whole 5 innings.
In between the Sens/Devils game, I watched a seasoned pro- Roy Halladay- mow down a decent hitting Rangers team in about 2 hours. That's how it's done Bedard/Loewen/Cabrera...(Oh yeah, Bedard stated -what's the big deal-or words to that effect! So that probably summarizes most of the team's attitude right now...)

Perlozzo....oh Sammy. Why was Parrish pitchign to Mags and Sheffiedl when Bradford is in the bullpen? For the life of me Samyy P's pitching decisions have got to be the most bizarre ever.

I don't blame Sammy for not being able to get the ball over the plate, but he really has no idea how to handle his pitchers. None. btw.. how long has it been since Bynum played in a game?

Anyone who watches this team knows something is seriously wrong. Yes, we had soem hard luck with Bensen goign down ,and then Payton, Hernandez, Wright etc. but Wright we knew this ws gonna happen. And Payton and Hernandez are back and we're losing.

Something needs to be done to shake things up or it's going to be a long, long year. So sad to see this great franchise disintegrate every year.

24 games in and cs hinting at a tired bullpen. Is it possible, the first 15 man pitching staff?
Is that why we saw Bynum catching in the pen the other night?8 positions, a dh(for whatever that's worth) and 1 supersub.
Yea! Go O's!! I mean it. Really. GoGoGo!

O's fan in SF--I agree the Brewers look like a far more competent team and possess slightly less talent. The difference is Yost, Melvin, and Mark Attanasio. Who's that last guy? Never heard of him? That's the way it should be. He lets Yost manage and Melvin run the team.

If you ever get a second, take a look at Yost's demeanor and then click over to Perlozzo. Check out the body language. It's like night and day. Self-confidence vs. guesswork. Admittedly, I was viewing Yost in HD and Perlozzo in MASN-vision, so I can't be completely sure that I am completely reading Sam correctly. But I do listen to his post-game act and despite his genuine good character and niceness, I don't think the guy is the fighter that this particular group of guys needs.

Here's another concern. Not that I am advocating it, but what if Sammy needed to bench Tejada (for say failing to run out ground balls or pretending to be a bullfighter)? Would he have the courage?

Maybe that sad excuse for a brawl will wake this team up. I may have lost some respect for Cabrera who was held back by Castillo. Put 'em up, put 'em up!

Roch:

Is Hayden Penn ruled out? I assume he's still on the AAA DL?

Is Todd Williams doing terrible at Norfolk or did Perlozzo catch him with his wife? Who has to collapse on the field before he'll see a promotion this season?

Commenter correct about Tejada. His lackadaisical attitude, wild swinging and bonehead play have already infected his IF buddies Mora and Roberts (especially Roberts)...it will move to the OF quickly, if not already. If you check this team's minor league system, we have enough "free swingers" (read as someone who couldn't tell a strike from a ball from the center field camera) to stock the entire major leagues (except very few of them will reach there.

This organization needs a TOTAL change in philosphy...it defies probability that team after team can be LESS than the sum of its parts!

Absolutely disgraceful!

A follower of the team since 1957...

I think there's a golden opportunity for somebody to pitch a "protect your oblique Muscle" training program to the Orioles.

Well Jim66, a lot of us are VERY frustrated too. And angry because we began to enjoy winning. Did you find 2nd place, winning 7 of 8 & sweeping the Jays so daunting & foreign that you began to pine for the good old days of 4th place?
