Preston: Ravens should look at San Diego WR Floyd
In case you missed it, The Sun's Mike Preston wrote a column on how San Diego's Malcom Floyd would be the Ravens' best option to upgrade at wide receiver this offseason. He is a restricted free agent, so the Ravens would have to give up a draft pick or two.
Here's an excerpt from Preston's column on Floyd:
He's 6 feet 5 and weighs 225 pounds. He isn't a burner, but has pretty good speed. He was the perfect bookend for the 6-5, 230-pound [Vincent] Jackson. In his fourth season out of Wyoming, Floyd caught 45 passes for 776 yards (17.2 yards a catch) and one touchdown in 2009. He can become the deep threat the Ravens lacked on the outside or the big target they need inside the red zone.
His nickname is "M-80."
Floyd is just starting to enter his prime. Just as important, the Ravens only have to go down the hallway at The Castle to do a background check on him because offensive coordinator Cam Cameron coached Floyd with the Chargers a few years ago. Cameron really likes him, and Floyd could step in without any hesitation because he is familiar with the offense.
A previous version of this entry gave an incorrect number for Floyd's touchdown catches this past season. The Baltimore Sun regrets the error.

Yeah... That makes sense... Lets go for a guy who has been producing while playing alongside LT, Philip Rivers, Antonio Gates, and Vincent Jackson... Meanwhile, Brandon Marshall has been putting up numbers with NO ONE around him... It's time to roll the dice... BRING MARSHALL TO BALTIMORE!!!

Only question is, can Floyd transition into being a number one. Can he handle what comes with that tag. Because he plays with Jackson, he does not see an opponent’s best cover guy. As number one here, he would see that weekly.

Mike,
Finally an article I can agree with, Is it going to snow!
I could not agree with you more as he would be a great catch. My only drawback is it is going to cost a 1st and a 3rd round choice to get him and if we wait then OMG he will be priced out of contention for Cap strapped Ravens although I think it will go to uncapped year.
On a side not can someone take the box score off blog main page from Ravens-Colts game. We all know they lost and it just makes me want to puke everytime I see it, Mike is this your doing? LOL
Excellent Job on this story

The Chargers receivers were a handful for us this year, though it was Jackson and the inevitable Gates who put up the #'s. For what it's worth, Floyd seems to have 2 career catches vs. the Ravens, both for long gains. He's got the size we lack. Blazing speed is always nice, but I'd settle for separation. Someone will have to watch the tapes to determine that. Apparently he's in good physical and mental health. Definitely a better value, especially if he comes via trade.
What do we have that both SD wants and we can spare? LBs? Expendable "veteran project" WRs (e.g. Clayton or Williams; I'd like to keep Washington as #3)? His wasn't a name I knew until Preston brought him up, but then I'm a very myopic Ravens fan. Worth a nibble.

It's not fair to tease us with such an idea!!!!
i would like to have floyd lining up next to mason and heap!!! what a great combination!!!!
my only concern is his age, nearly 29 years old!
But i'm ok with the idea of letting go a secound round pick for him! and save the first one for a defensive player!!!
CANT WAIT MARCH NOW!!!

Floyd didn't have 8 TDs in 2009, he had 1. Way to go Preston.

Theres no way that makes sense ......why give up a pick + for a guy who's had moderate success on a high powered team with a great supporting cast when you can get Brandon Laffel, Dez Bryant,Arellious Benn, Damian Williams,Golden Tate or even the small but extremly dynamic Desaen Jackson clones Dexter McCluster and Mardy Gilyard.....unless they'l take just the 1 pick which they wont....only Marshall would be worth more than a pick.... Buffalo might take 1 pick for Owens....but I wouldn't give up pick 1 for him.

1 NOT 8 Touchdowns Preston !!!!!!!
How do you screw that up ????????
Talk about bad reporting. That's just pathetic. Can't wait for the retraction excuse. At least be creative when you do it Preston.

Nah, man!
You go after second tier players, and then you confirm what everyone thinks of you as a second tier team. You want to be elite, you go and spent elite money and get elite players. Our QB is no P. Manning. You can't just bring unproven wide receivers and expect Flacco to light it up. You have to bring big bodies like Vincent Jackson and Brandon Marshall. All Flacco has to do is throw it somewhere in their vicinity and they can catch it.
Enough with the excuses. Elite team don't make excuses. They get elite players. I don't care what it takes to get elite players. We have not had an elite wide receiver in the entire franchise history. You owe it to the fans. I don't care who you trade, picks or Ray Lewis, or Ed Reed, or McGahee. I don't care that you have to sign Ngata, who by the way does not score touchdowns. I don't care that you have to sign McLain.
I know one thing. You should sign Brandon Marshall.

@ Rob
hi think drafting a WR is the most difficult thing to do specially in early round...can the kid adapt to pro style offense, to pro cornerbacks, pro offense books etc... Ozzie never been great picking a WR and i don't expect it to change... too much hype on the 2010 WR draft prospect too... that's why investing on a proven veteran is a smart thing especially for baltimore who need to find a WR who can produce immediately... that's why floyd link to cameron is a good thing... definitevely think it's a safer risk to take than drafting a WR with an early pick...cheers!

I think Preston is overstepping his bounds , WE NEED A BIG PLAY RECIEVER , JUST BECAUSE Floyd had a good season with SD , he may be a wash here , take a bigger sure handed vet that knows how to get some separation , hell take T.O , at least we know he can be a beast , or go after Andre Johnson, but I rather take the chance on someone else thatn Floyd , how may times have we gotten player's from other teams that performed well in the previous season , but when they become Ravens ,they become a bust , GET THE RIGHT PLAYER'S AND STOP BEING CHEAP...........

I agree with purple koolaid nothing about signing a 29 year old receiver who was the 3rd option on his team last year when 45 catches for 776 yards and 1 TD were career highs says the team is serious about contending for the superbowl. Marshall is the guy and I know we don't want to give up too much for him but he should be the first and second option in our WR search, that is if the ravens are serious and not just playing lip service to winning a championship like the guys over on eutaw street.
