Chris Carr gets burned again. When will LaDarius Webb finally get a real shot at Nickel?
Posted by: Frank Rizzo | November 8, 2009 1:19 PM
Same question I've had all year: What is Chris Carr doing on this team. Now I will expand that to Carr, Foxworth, Washington, Walker and Landry. It's going to be brutal from here on. May not even beat the Browns.

This team stinks!

Hey Mike
The Ravens used to have a fella who played outside LB by the name of Suggs. I think he wore the #55. What ever happened to him, he seem to disappear right after he got a huge contract?

Mike-
As I'm watching the game, I'm having a hard time understanding how Mr. Mattison is a defensive coordinator in the National Football League. My problem lies in his astoundingly vanilla scheme. It would be one thing if he had the personnel to put pressure on the quarterback, but the fact of the matter is: he doesn't. Because of this, we have no chance to win one on one battles in the back-end with a porous secondary. Sure it could be argued Mattison is just doing what he can with the players he has, but that argument is a cop-out. It just seems as if Mattison is unprepared and unwilling to change. Do you agree? Thank you for your thoughts.

Mike for such a big game why did the Ravens come out flat?
Posted by: Gary Todd | November 8, 2009 2:39 PM
How many more years do you think it will take to get rid of Greg Mattison? His defense is lost!
Posted by: MikeB | November 8, 2009 2:47 PM
Can someone get inside Flacco's head and get him to show up for the first half of games?
Posted by: Tom | November 8, 2009 2:58 PM
Hi Mike,
It seemed like the defense settled down considerably once Ladarius Webb took over for Washington. What did you think of his performance?
Posted by: Ben | November 8, 2009 3:05 PM
Have the Ravens considered using Mark Clayton on punt returns? He has shown great vision in the open field on reverse plays, and Carr has been nothing but a liability everywhere on the field.
Posted by: Heath | November 8, 2009 3:11 PM
Mike: On more than one play Ray Lewis or Ed Reed were late or missed a tackle, stops that they used to make. Respected for what they have been, yes, but isn't this a hole to be fixed by youth?
Posted by: John | November 8, 2009 3:25 PM
Did the Ravens come out to play today? It's the third quarter and so far the Ravens look like they're asleep. Those aren't missed tackles. Those are Ravens who are too lazy to wrap their arms around the receiver and bring them down. Very bad coaching. Very bad. No awful!!!
Posted by: Albert Dziennik | November 8, 2009 3:27 PM
Coach Mattison has received some criticism but isn't it clear that his biggest failure is withholding Webb for so long when our need was so desperate? Why didn't we try him earlier?

Do the Ravens have another receiver other than Mason? Where is Washington? I question the offensive play calling by Cameron.

Posted by: tony from scotland | November 8, 2009 4:06 PM
how is ozzie going to fix, a bad kicker who can't make big kicks, another reciever to help mason out if he doesn't retire, and a WHOLE secondary who just plain are horriable? So much for the playoffs. Is Mattison here next year?
Posted by: mike | November 8, 2009 4:13 PM
Mike,
Once and for all, please define illegal contact. Mason is all but arm wrestling a cincy CB in the endzone and no call by the ref who was right there. Ball would have been on the 1 and the complexion of the game would have changed (no Hasuka FG needed, which he missed). It seems the Ravens are the brunt end of non-call penalties yet get called for nearly everything. Ed Reed was wrestled and held on an attempted blocked punt too.

Mike
this is the second time the ravens have played a listless, flat game against the Bengals, how is that possible against a divisional foe?.....where are the leaders on this team, all the shots on the sideline showed a group of guys who just did not seem to want to be there, no fire, no one getting in anyones face, and that includes the coaching staff.....where is the passion with this bunch?
Posted by: rob | November 8, 2009 4:27 PM
What happened to Washington. or Williams today? After last week's play calling what happened to Cameron?.

Posted by: smike | November 8, 2009 4:30 PM
Hey Mike, is it safe to say the Mattison experiment is a complete and utter failure? We seem to get absolutely no pass rush on the QB and our cornerbacks play so far off of the receivers, it's just pitch and catch for a good QB. We do not look like a playoff team. What is your take on Mattison's failure?

Is the NFL going to do anything about the officiating? I know the refs have a difficult job, and they are only human. My theory is that the ravens have a reputation of being a team that gets a lot of flags, and that reputation yields them more legitimate as well as illegitimate flags. But bad officiating seems to permeate a lot of other cities as well. What will/can the NFL do about it?
Posted by: Matt from Catonsville | November 8, 2009 4:37 PM
just one question? WHAT HAPPENED?
Posted by: spike | November 8, 2009 4:47 PM
Remind me again why Harbaugh got rid of Stover.
Posted by: Bob Morgan | November 8, 2009 4:49 PM
Hey Mike!! What a dayyyyy!! I have so many thoughts flying around in my head but I wil try and focus on one question for you.....
I hate to subscribe to this whole referee conspiracy theory but I am a middle child so I guess it comes sort of naturally. There were just too many missed calls today and gamechanging calls too. What about the holding on Trevor Pryce on a huge third down that wasnt called, and a noncall on the hold on Reed late in the fourth quarter? And until Harbs threw the challenge flag the ridiculous spot the refs gave cincy for a first down? Is there any way to remedy this NFL officiating? Shouldn't Harbs formally write in a complaint to the NFL? This officiating is becoming too disturbing and it just keeps getting worse. ....

Would players like Fabian washinton and Chris Carr been starting on the ravens defense in the past?
Posted by: dennis esposito | November 8, 2009 4:57 PM
Is it just me or does it seem like Harbaugh and company can not beat a good QB? Why?
Posted by: Joe Lutz | November 8, 2009 5:02 PM
Is John Harbaugh, in over his head? Last year we had a rookie coach anchored with two experienced NFL coordinator. It appeared that he was making all the right moves. This year we have seen improvement in the offense and it’s ability to match schemes with the opposing teams defense. Harbaugh’s made the move this off season with the lost of his defense coordinator to anchored himself on the defense side with a friend who had limited time in the NFL .I t appears to me, that Greg Mattison, lack of experience in the NFL, is showing more and more. We have the look of a very basic college defense. In the Denver game we where creative, had movement of players and hide the blitz enough to confuse the offense. Today, we went right back to looking like a very plain college defense. The Raven has had four Defense’s Coordinators in the last ten years. The previous three all had NFL experience and we had an outstanding defense. Today, while time will tell, but it does not look good. Do you think Harbaugh will realize his mistake in his elevation of Mattison over some of the other personnel he had on his staff with more NFL experience like Clarence Brooks? Do you think Harbaugh will realize that Greg Mattison may be a great friend but he is not the guy for this position at this time?
Posted by: Mike Sewell | November 8, 2009 5:04 PM
What is Cincy doing that is confusing this team? We need a kicker, Defensive Tackle, Defensive Back & where is Suggs? Instead of flexing for pictures he should be flexing for the games!
Posted by: George | November 8, 2009 5:08 PM
Is it me or did this team take a big leap back. Flacco was not accurate at all and made our WRs made the Bengals CBs look like Champ Bailey. The O-Line could not protect Flacco at all. Was this lack of execution, a techneque problem or did this team just not come off the bus?
Posted by: Staci | November 8, 2009 5:09 PM
The Sun has gone out of its way to heap praise on the Ravens' ownership, front office and coaches since the Billick firing, yet the team continues to struggle against Marvin Lewis and the Bengals (considered a mediocre organization at best). If the Ravens are so great and the Bengals are the Bungles, why can't we beat them?
Posted by: Bernie | November 8, 2009 5:09 PM
What adjustments should the Ravens have made on Offense when they were not able to move the ball?
Posted by: Ben | November 8, 2009 5:11 PM
How much of a factor did not having Nagta have on the defense but mainly the pass rush on Palmer.
Posted by: Jeff | November 8, 2009 5:13 PM
With this loss how does the future look for the Ravens in the Wild Card Race and how do you see them finishing?
Posted by: Caroline | November 8, 2009 5:15 PM
At least we see Webb playing. It looked like he can tackle as well as defend the pass well. How do you see his future as a Raven and Oh, this is one positive thing I can take from this game...

Mike, is it me, or does it seem like the Ravens get out-coached on a regular basis?
Posted by: Dave | November 8, 2009 5:19 PM
I am unable to watch the game live and can only look at stats and on-line highlights. My question is: How come the coaching staff did not make adjustments from the first Bengals game? since the stats from this game look just like the first one?
Posted by: Farhood (From Dubai) | November 8, 2009 5:20 PM
Mike,
Based on pre-season talk, it was predicted Haita Ngata was in for a monster year (defensive player of the year, etc.)and even mentioned as a future HOF'er. I think he is doing okay but not great, I thought his 4th year would be a true break-out, not happening. I know surrounding talent not as good as previous years but maybe it was the surrounding talent that made us predict such great things for him, thoughts?
Posted by: Spencer Penn | November 8, 2009 5:23 PM
Mike,
The Ravens seem to drop back in standard defense a lot to drop extra coverage to help the secondary and it's not working. Carson Palmer's first touchdown was standing back there all day against a 3 man rush. Even though their blitzing is not working real well either, isn't it time to just send as much pressure as possible and take your chances? I mean there is no difference between getting burnt on blitzes or getting burnt in base defense. At least pressure can bring some good things with it.
Posted by: John Schmidt | November 8, 2009 5:24 PM
How much of this loss would you blame on the coaching staff for not having a good game plan or was this one on the players for not executing?
Posted by: Jordan | November 8, 2009 5:27 PM
Mike, i was really impressed with the play of Webb on Sunday. Do you think he may have played himself into a starting corner position as a rookie? Note to Ed reed, Lardarius looks to be the best tackler in the secondary.
Posted by: Brian | November 8, 2009 5:28 PM
Can you tell me why Webb wasn't our starting CB to begin with and why he wasn"t returning punts? He seems to be our best option at both.

Mike, How does a professional cornerback loose footing on the field during a game? Is it their fault or should the equipment manager be looking for a new position?

One of the things I ddin't like about Billick was he was stubborn in defending Cavanaugh, certain players, and obviously subpar performances. Are we seeing some of this traits in Harbaugh with regard to Mattison, the kicker, and today's performance?
Posted by: DaveP | November 8, 2009 5:45 PM
Mike,
This Jekyll and Hide team just had its most embarassing performance of the year, coming off of its best the week before. Is there any reason to believe this team won't be 8-8, and that we will be one of 6 AFC teams in the playoffs?
Posted by: Joe | November 8, 2009 5:55 PM
Mike,
Please explain to me why Mattison was qualified to be our defensive coordinator. How could Mattison learn from Rex after only 1 season. Does it seem that he doesn't have a feel for calling an NFL game? Is it because he is a family friend?
Posted by: Dennis - Upper Marlboro | November 8, 2009 5:57 PM
When are the Raven's coaches going to realize that by putting Ladarius Webb on the opposition's number one receiver makes the defense better?
Posted by: dwayne\baltimore | November 8, 2009 5:58 PM
How can Oz get so many players right during the draft and miss so bad on off-season acquisitions? Foxworth, Carr, Washington, L.J. Smith.
Posted by: Steve | November 8, 2009 5:59 PM
Mike, given the fact that the Bengals didn't not score after L. Webb replaced Washington at corner, why did the Ravens choose to start Carr in the nickel over Webb?
Posted by: Bruce | November 8, 2009 5:59 PM
How do you sum up the Ravens' identity with half of the season left to play?
Posted by: Bacon | November 8, 2009 6:00 PM
Refs again clearly working against the Ravens. The NFL has almost completely lost me over the biased officiating. Is there a powerful NFL ownership cabal that is jealous over Bisciotti's success?
Posted by: Pete | November 8, 2009 6:01 PM
Mike,
This team looked totally unprepared and outcoached, especially the defense. It doesn't seem that Mattison knows when to adjust his gameplan based on what the other team is giving him. Why does it take him three straight scoring drives before he brings more pressure on Palmer? Is he in over his head in the professional ranks?
Posted by: Rob | November 8, 2009 6:03 PM
Mike, under coach Billick, you pointed out that the Ravens never produced a decent offense, they were inconsistent with one up year, followed by one down year, and they were undisciplined as evidenced by their propensity for penalties. Fast forward two years and we have Coach Harbaugh, a man who made his living in special teams and defensive backs, and we see the Ravens ranked in the bottom third of the league in both of those categories, and oh, by the way, leading the league in penalties. Also looks to be one up year, followed by one down year. Also, didn' t the special teams GURU cut one of the most accurate kickers in the league? When does Harbaugh's honeymoon end with you and the rest of the Baltimore media?!?
Posted by: Marty from Kent Island | November 8, 2009 6:04 PM
Just a quick one: Did the Ravens game today get postponed and they re-ran the last Ravens-Bengals game in its place?
Posted by: Dennis | November 8, 2009 6:04 PM
With the season at the halfway mark what is your prediction for the ravens final record?
Posted by: Chris | November 8, 2009 6:07 PM
Mike,
Who in the Raven's organization is responsible for making such egregious personnel decisions over the past couple of years? I am specifically referring to the acquisitions Foxworth, Fabian Washington, Carr, Walker and L. Smith, the decision to retain Hauschka over Stover, Suggs over Scott, Landry over Leonard, and the selection of Mattison to be defensive coordinator? Is it Ozzie, Harbaugh or a Steeler saboteur?
Posted by: Ken | November 8, 2009 6:20 PM
The Ravens have put up over 20 points against every team except the Bengals. Do the Bengals just know how to stop our offense or do the Ravens not know how to scheme their defense?
Posted by: Paul | November 8, 2009 6:22 PM
Mike,
As a fan, It is clear to me that the lack of success of the Ravens this year lies solely on the shoulders of Ozzie Newsome. The players we have are giving us the best they can give us. We just don't have enough talent in the secondary and wide receiver to compete in this league. Those are the shortcomings of Ozzie. Another bad move was not resigning Stover.
Yes, Flacco, Rice and Oher were good picks, but clearly this year our season is lost because Ozzie failed to bring or retain talent.
I think it's time for Ozzie to retire. What do you think? I actually know what you think. You'll put it all on the players. I don't think these players have more potential that they haven't already shown, which leaves us with choices made by the GM.
Posted by: Purple Koolaid | November 8, 2009 6:27 PM
Mike:
Well, I guess todays's performance ruined any chances of going to the super bowl. I thought Reed looked horrible today along with all the other dweebs in the secondary. The Ravens should have stayed in Baltimore today.
Posted by: Bill | November 8, 2009 6:31 PM
our receivers are blanketed and the Bengals receivers are 5-10 yards open. Why?
Posted by: John Dovi | November 8, 2009 6:33 PM
I may be imagining things, but everytime the cameras isolated on Bengal receivers, their cuts were hard and sharp; with the Ravens, it was consistently 'rounded corners'...The Bengal corners easily jumped numerous routes....what's the scoop???!!!

Am I the only one who noticed Ed Reed's inability to tackle? It is almost like he is tackling with one arm whereas the Denver game he went all in on the play with the Fumble. Since we are on the topic of Ed Reed where is he in Pass Defense?? This does not look like Last Years Ed Reed in Pass coverage.

If the unemployment rate is 10.5% (and when the number of American adults out of work may be closer to 17%), why can't we find one good cornerback?
Posted by: BCJ | November 8, 2009 6:38 PM
Hi Mike: Well, this was a disheartening loss. The team seemed unprepared in both Cincy games as well as the Minnesota one. The vanilla offense used to be a problem, now it's a totally unimaginative, vanilla defense that's hurting us. What can be done with the defense in the coming games--especailly with games with good QBs? The three man "rush" isn't working and Mattison doesn't seem to know from week to week what to do.
Posted by: Chris | November 8, 2009 6:45 PM
Mike. Offense, Defense and Head. All coaches that appear to be listless and lifeless and inconsistenct. I think the shine has worn off Harbaugh and there are many second thoughts about his handling of this un-deciplined team. Sorry. What can be done ?

I don't know the idiot who decided to let Chris McAlister go, but these clowns can't defend a decent pass receiver worth a damn. You can't keep losing quality players on defense and expect to keep playing the way Ravens fans expect their defense to play.
Posted by: Bud | November 8, 2009 7:50 PM
Did the coaching staff make a mistake waiting this long to interject Lardarius Webb into the lineup? I understand the reason he was playing at corner was due to injury, but nonetheless, he is a player and brings a physical presence sorely lacking in the secondary.
Posted by: CRZA | November 8, 2009 7:51 PM
Mike:
First thing: Now that I hear you on radio, I find myself agreeing with you. Scary. OK on to business. Not that the officiating caused them to lose the game, but this is getting ridiculous. The official watches as Mason is interfered with, Reed is held, Price held multiple times, JJ is held by his face mask. Do you think the Ravens complaining during and after games is starting to backfire? You can catch more flies with honey instead of vinegar. Are the Ravens spewing too much vinegar?
Posted by: John | November 8, 2009 8:10 PM
Mike, does Harbaugh have control of this team? The way that the team is racking up penalties reminds me of the way that Billick lost the reigns in his final years here.
Posted by: GAK | November 8, 2009 8:14 PM
How many more important games does this team need to lose before they realize that discipline will allow them to win games against good teams? Didn't Harbaugh come in last year with a promise to create a disciplined hard working team? This year the penalties are out of control, gap control is non-existent and for some reason a bunch of players have radio shows again. I'm confused is all.
Thanks, Bryan

When will the Ravens Get the same calls that other teams get this is getting rediculous!!!!!!! BLATENT
Posted by: James | November 8, 2009 8:17 PM
I have to ask this question. Has Harbaugh lost this team ? Did he ever have it ? Was Bat Scott telling the truth when he said that Rex was really the coach of the Ravens last year ?
What I saw today was a totally out coached team. The defense is horrible and I'm sorry to say that the D Coordinator has to go. There seems to be no game plan and the defense is flat footed most of the time. Guys are not tackling, no gap control, no pass rush, the line is being pushed around and we have the worst secondary in the NFL !
Throw in the fact that we showed the door to a great kicker, for a guy that can't kick under pressure. Webb looked better than anyone on defense today. Why is he not starting ? Where is Krueger ? Why is Gooden playing inside LB, when he should be on the outside ? Why is Nakamura not starting over Landry ?
Why would Mattison not continue the blitzes on Palmer like he did on Orton. The only way for this defense to succeed is to keep constant pressure on the QB !
Posted by: Bill Bean | November 8, 2009 8:21 PM
Do you foresee a lot of changes in our defense in the off season like we did a few years back after the superbowl?
Posted by: Bill | November 8, 2009 8:23 PM
Mike,
With some exceptions, there seems to be a lack of heart from members of this team - poor tackling, taking plays off, penalties, etc. I don't pin this on Coach Harbaugh but the players themselves; what's your assessment?
Posted by: Phil | November 8, 2009 8:29 PM
Mike, Do you think the defense has finally gotten old? Why is Willis playing so little when he had such early success this year?
Posted by: Cathy VonNordeck Hughes | November 8, 2009 8:41 PM
one of the reasons for getting rid of billick was the team's iconsistincy. tell what has changed? they are not a team without talent! why can they look so good one week and like crap the next. to me it , is the coaching. i liked the change but, the swings in play from one week to the next are a reflection of coaching. it was a problem with billick and it continues with harbaugh. goood coaches don't let that happen. shanahan is a prime example. he found a way to keep denver competitive all the time. something is not right with a team that is very good one week and crap the next! what is the answer ozzie?
