Ravens bring two kickers in for tryouts

Former NFL kickers Mike Nugent (Jets) and Billy Cundiff (Cowboys) tried out for the Ravens at their Owings Mills training complex today, but no signings were announced by the team.

Steve Hauschka has made 8 of 11 field goals in his first season as Ravens kicker, but had critical misses against the Vikings on Oct. 18 and the Bengals on Sunday. Both missed kicks hooked to the left of the upright. The kick against the Vikings was to win the game as time ran out.

“Steve works really hard, he’s really got a lot of talent. He’s our best option,” coach John Harbaugh said tonight on his weekly radio show on WBAL.

This is the second time Nugent has tried out for the Ravens.

My, my, my, the Special Teams Guru Harbaugh, admits to a mistake twice in the same week? Snap up your "Mighty Men" jacket and find us a new kicker...meanwhile our Hall of Famer kicks in Indy.

This short story does'nt explain what Hardball has in mind. Are they putting Steve on notice or looking to employ 2 kickers for the rest of the season?I'm,at least, glad that they think the org can improve the kicking game.

They should have kept Stover for at least one more season, this move was mnore boneheaded than letting Jim Leonhard get away to keep a lousy back like Landry. By the way has anyone seen Landry's head , because it has been stuck up his but for the whole season so far!!!

The Ravens need to dig up Lou Groza or Jan Stenerud or Garo Ypremian or Steve Mira. Any would be better than the guy they have now. How about Charlie Gogolak. Or they could try a laser guided football or something. Hauschka would probably miss that too. If he misses in Cleveland, the Ravens should make him fly back in the baggage compartment.

I'd have kept Stover for one more year, myself.
I don't own the team....LOL
Looks to me he's uptight when kicking from the left hash mark.
He may not miss another one, the rest of the Season. He may be gone, if he misses another makeable kick. We'll find out.

Let's not forget that Matt Stover's field goal percentage was 72% each of his first three years, including several misses in winnable games. We've got bigger problems than Hauschka.

I think it's the right move. If anything it might motivate the kid, if not someone like Nugent could be reliable enough.

Will, you and everyone else who brings up Stover's first three years doesn't get it. Harbaugh's choice wasn't Hauschka or Stover's first three years -- it was Hauschka or Stover NOW. Jeez....

Hauschka was originally used for kickoff and long field goals. Anyone notice many of his kickoffs are only making it to the 5 or 10 yard line.
Filed goals wouldn't be so important if the rest of the team showed up in the 1st half.

harbaugh is in over his head. ozzie newsome handed a coordinator an average bunch of players. who didn't expect this to be the way it is. 4-4. like keyshawn said, if you pay for bums, that is what you will get!!

In my opinion the Ravens should not have tampered with the kicking game in what was perceived to be a run for the championship this year.

The old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" certainly applied here. If the Ravens were so intent on shaking things up they should have done something about the wide receiver position first. Matt Stover was the least of their problems coming in to the season.

But that's just me.

Steve has time for 51 more kicks, yep have each team member that was on the roster last week against Cinn, bend over and have Steve kickem' on their left cheek....no kiddin'

Let's play Ravens football and get your heads out of your butts before steve raises his right foot !!!

Just more lousy personel decisions by Ozzie , who continues to get a free pass.............the choices made this past off season were just plain terrible..........Gone are Bart Scott , Jim Leonard , Matt Stover , Jason Brown , Marcus Robinson , C-Mac ,you can bet even Samari Rolle didn't try real hard to come back.......................look whos in their places Chris Carr , Steve Houschka , Dominique Foxworth , Paul kruger , Tony moll , L.J. Smith , etc.

Sorry , I just don't see how Ozzie continues to get a free pass !

Totally agree with Spy, if it was not for Oher and now Webb's play. Ravens would have gotten an F in offseason moves and signings. Even signing Suggs to that monster deal is proving we overpaid severly for him or Mattison's philosophy is not utilizing Suggs talent. Birk, I just feel bad for him, he should be released so he can go back to the Vikings for a serious super bowl run, he deserves that much after his career.

Some of you are just insane. Chris McAllister showed up to a game hungover. Don't you think if he anything left that one of the other 31 NFL teams would have called him? Salary cap forced the Ravens' hand on Jason Brown and Bart Scott. Did they WANT to let them go? Of course not. The team had to make a decision between Landry and Leonhard. Easy to say now that they made the wrong decision, but when the decision was made it wasn't very clear cut.

As far as the whole kicker thing... If Matt Stover was that damn good, why did it take until a midseason injury for him to get a job? In Stover's rookie season, he was 16/22, a 72.7% accuracy rate. This season, Hauschka is 8/11, a 72.7% accuracy rate. Uncanny! Stover struggled as a rookie! Not only that, he was at 72% for his second and third years in the league also! Amazing! In Stover's rookie season, he missed three FG in the 40-49 range, one in the 30-39 range, one in the 20-29 range, and even one in the 10-19 range! Seriously, some of you whackjobs need to cut Hauschka some slack.

Oh, and to think that someone said "you can bet even Samari Rolle didn't try real hard to come back" is just pure stupidity. You do realize that Rolle missed the end of last season with a neck injury, and that surgery intended to fix the problem didn't go as planned. If he played this year he could have been PARALYZED. You know, the kind that means you can't WALK?

How quickly we forget. It was B Scott and J Leonard who so often left their primary assignments when the play would break down ie the pitt last second td last year. Also, Gano should have been kept. This other kid had a chance to grace the field with Stover and yet it looks like he learned nothing from being around him.

You either know how to kick by that point or you do not know how to kick by that point.
Being on the field with Stover isn't going to teach the guy anything.
