No strong vote of confidence for Hauschka

Ravens coach John Harbaugh didn’t offer a strong vote of confidence to Steve Hauschka a day after the kicker missed his second straight fourth-quarter kick.

Asked if the Ravens are ready to replace Hauschka, Harbaugh said Monday, “We’re not ready to make any kind of announcement on that. We think Steve’s going to be a really good kicker in the NFL. [We’re] disappointed with that kick and I think Steve is too. He can kick that ball a lot better. It was not a good swing. We’re not ready to say we don’t think he’s going to be a good kicker in the NFL yet.”

It was interesting to note that Harbaugh repeated that Hauschka would be a good kicker "in the NFL" and not specifically with the Ravens.

Hauschka is struggling this season to replace Matt Stover, who had been the only placekicker in the Ravens existence.

One option could be to sign free-agent kicker Mike Nugent. The Ravens recently worked him out when Hauschka had injured his ankle. The team looked to sign Nugent this offseason before he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Harbaugh’s stance Monday was different than the one he had after Hauschka missed the 44-yard field goal that would have won the Minnesota game on Oct. 18.

“We’ve seen enough of him to believe that he’s going to be our kicker,” Harbaugh said last month. “We’ve got a lot of confidence in him. He’s talented, he’s a great kid, he works hard. Let’s see what happens.”

It is obvious that the Front Office totally blew this season.

I am losing more and more confidence in their ability to build a winner. Sure, they may get lucky every once in a while like they did last year, running into teams at the right time, and getting a game or 2 into the playoffs, but they can NOT build a consistent SB contender.

They are WAY too arrogant.
There is NO WAY they should have not upgraded at WR and PK before this season started.
We have the WORST WR core in the NFL. They are so freaking easy to cover it is sickening.
For Newsome to look at tape of Foxworthless and think he could be a #1 CB in the NFL is very very scary that maybe he has lost his evaluating power.
What have they really done?

wait a couple weeks, Matt [Stover] will be done in Indy cuz Vinatari will be back. Then we can bring back Matt! Like they shoulda done in the first place!

Please Coach, enough already -- we don't care that Hauschka is a "great kid" --- we care only that he makes field goals that a professional kicker should make -- but this "great kid" doesn't.... I hope your 46th man is worth not carrying Stover --- dumb move.

I for one predicted this would happen with Hauschka and was pilloried on the site by Purple Kool Aid Drinkers who believe everything that comes ouut of the Castle.

It was simply too much of a gamble and I give Preston credit for saying so from the gitgo.

It just did not make sense.

Steve has no confidence, which is understandable because he is in over his head.

I'm knida tired of this 1 game season talk...this 0 - 1 or 1 - 0 is adding up to an ugly record. Also, didn't we replace Stover because he couldn't kick beyond 40? Reed is hurt, if they take him out, it's bombs away on us.

We were'nt going to win in Cincy, anyway. These lackluster beginning of games are killing the whole team and gassing the defense to boot. Steve could have kicked 4 field goals on Sunday, except the offense could'nt get close enough or keep the ball long enough. The kicker did'nt lose this one boys.Steve can kick and how about a chance to boot one in a first half, for a change?

This entire discussion only serves to once again validate what a fine line there typically is between winning and losing in the NFL, both game-to-game and within the game. The larger question, however, is how the Ravens could come out so listless after playing the game they did against Denver. Sure didn't see that egg being laid.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait, the Special Teams Guru, John Harbaugh made a mistake? Can't be. You see Harbaugh is a special teams and defensive back maven who will catapult these two squads to the top of the league. Who, wait a minute, they are in the bottom third of the league in both special teams and pass defense? Isn't Harbaugh a special teams guru?!?! Oh, well, at least they're disciplined...what? They lead the league in penalties?!? How can this be? But his clock management is good, right?

Hauschka attended Middlebury College in Vermont. that tells me he's smart. more importantly, the winters are brutal there unlike what most of the Raven sunshine fans experience. You have to have a certain mental toughness to endure these winters and meet the rigors of a real academic environment. He will rebound and prove to be a great kicker. Thats a heck of whole more than what can be said about our amateur coaching staff.

Ozzie and Harbs should be ashamed of themselves, I'm watching a 35 year old corner that just came in off the street on Friday, covering Hines Ward like a blanket and Ben can't find anyone to throw the ball too. Oh, his name? Ty Law!!!!!!!! What the hell? What have you been doing in the palace in Ownings Mills? Nothing!!! Because if you were doing your job and trying to make this team better, you would have signed HIM or Lawyer Mallor or anyone else, even C-Mac that could help us. Clearly a 35 year old CB that missed all of camp and just joined his team on Friday is way better than anything we currently have in our defensive backfield.. Dam Shame!!!!

Baltimore fans are so fickle. All the "I told you so's" that populate the discussion of Sunday's game belie the fact that kicking under pressure is a learned skill. The only way one learns it is to kick in pressure situations, which means that there will be failures until a given kicker learns how to handle the pressure. Booing the guy off the field will not aid his confidence, but I can guarantee that Steve will hear boos from Baltimore "fans" next time he comes out at M&T. The Ravens deserve better fans than that.

get a grip everybody. i believe for the remainder of the season, the Ravens should tough it out. no excuses. After the season, there's going to be a lot of turnover especially with the defensive front three. Gregg and Pryce are old. Suggs needs to lose some weight. (40 million dollar bonus) The DB's except for Reed will be released. hopefully Ray will retire. He's slow. By building through the draft, the team will be competitive.

Ravens fans seem to forget that Matt Stover miss the game winning field in overtime against the Miami Dolphins in 2007.Don't get me wrong stover is a good kicker, but he had his share of misses like all kickers. If Stover miss those field goals against the bengals and vikings. What would we say we should of kept hauscka, can't have it both ways. We lost those games because of a poor offensive start and the allowing themselves to be run on and pass on. The whole point is we have to replace stover sooner than later just like with ray lewis.

He stinks. I think Matt Bryant that played for tampa bay last yr is free. Or Martin Gramatica. Both are better than this bumb

Hauschka has not been very good so far and I'm frustrated too, but I still say the FO was not wrong in letting Stover go. Look at the stats, he was 5 for 10 last year kicking FGs from beyond 40 yards, that's not exactly stellar and shows his range had deteriorated. The last year you could call him Mr. Automatic was 2006, he's now only automatic on short and medium range FGs.

Yeah I know he's 6-6 with Indy so far but once again his range has not exactly been tested yet. I'm not putting down Matt Stover at all but I'm sick of some people saying, "Oh we'd have beat Minnesota if Stover was the kicker" like they're 100% sure about it.

Look, the 4-4 record isn't about this one player who didn't do this or that one player who did that. Its about the entire team, coaching staff included.

1) They are doing nothing offensively in the first half and using up far too little time. That's poor coaching and lackluster execution.

2) the defense does not seem 'ready' when the game begins...that's poor planning and coaching along with lackluster execution.

3) there is NO PASS RUSH. Take any ex-Ravens QB and he would throw for 250+ yards if he had as much time for his receivers to get open as the Ravnes are allowing. That's lackluster execution and talent. Gregg, Bannon, Edwards, Ngata...none of them generates much push from the inside. We just do not have many plays where one of our guys just beats one of their guys. This makes a very mediocre secondary appear totally overmatched at times.

4)Too many wide-open receivers in the secondary. In the Cincy game, the corners played too far off Cincy's receivers because they feared getting beat deep, so Palmer picked them apart short. Last week against Denver, they played tighter because Orten doesn't throw deep as much or as well as Palmer. It was no better or worse technique, it was a total lack of confidence in the Ravens CB's.

5) Both Ravens safeties have had poor seasons. Reed is known as a big play playmaker but there have been few big plays. He is not a good coverage man. Neither is Landry nor any of the LB's...hence the middle of the field and/or the flats are where the Ravens have been getting hurt most of the year. Quick outs when DB's play off; tight ends and WR's over the middle; crossing routes; RB's out of the backfield. Anytime an offense has needed to make a big play, that's where they've gone.

John h - Vermont has "brutal" winters? And Middlebury has apparently joined the Ivy League? (Not that one's alum is a reliable indicator of intelligence anyway.)

People, we lost by 10 not 3. Flacco had his worst game of the season yesterday and our corner's couldn't cover their mothers. That's why we lost yesterday. I predicted us going 12-4 at the beginning of the year, this was of course assuming we still had a solid defense. Now I say 9-7 and we miss the playoffs. Better luck next year guys :(

Anyone heard from Terrell Suggs lately? Is he still on the team?

It is easy to pontificate from the comfort and safety of your couch. This is a game that is fluid, meaning that it constantly changes; the Ravens are in a constant state of change as well as their opponents.

For the people who here who have posted such negative comments, I would love for them to put on a uniform and go out there and let it all hang out and see how they do. I am not trying to be insensitve, because I too am disappointed in the way the Ravens have approached this season as well as the lack of discipline in the team.

However, it is never as easy as it appears. I think we need to ride this bus to the end of the season, reevaluate what worked and what did not work and make the necessary adjustments. That's what professionals do.

Whether Hauschka is here at the end of teh season is not really relevant in whether the Ravens go to the playoffs or not. What is important is whether this team can put together successful game plans where the offense scores, the defense stops the opponents and special teams perform well. It is a team approach; not one player nor one unit.

Okay, flame on!

Like I said back in August. Do you really want a rookie kicker trying to win games for a team that is suppose to be playoff bound. Oh, and what team kicks 50 yard plus FGs anymore? How often does that even happen? Stover is waiting for his revenge game, just watch and see.

Stover's KIcking Stats:

1991: 16-22
1992: 21-29
1993: 16-22
1994: 26-28
1995: 29-33
1996: 19-25
1997: 26-34
1998: 21-28
1999: 28-33
2000: 35-39
2001: 30-35
2002: 21-25
2003: 33-38
2004: 29-32
2005: 30-34
2006: 28-30
2007: 27-32
2008: 27-33

Stover missed at least three field goals all but one year of his career and ranks as one of the most accurate kickers of all time. He also had two seasons in the 80%+ range before winning the Super Bowl in the 2000 season.

Can we stop panicking? When Stover missed 7 in '92 or 8 in '97 I'm fairly sure everyone freaked out but look what the man became because the coaches stuck with him.

Give Hauschka a break, he's not the reason this team is losing.

why should he get one...it is not like he has came through in the clutch in the past. He had a couple opportunities on the road and failed. If he can get through this and hit some big meaningful kicks the next 4 games, he could turn out to be a stealy kicker, but time is running out.

The kid hasn't made a pressure kick yet and I don't think we should wait till he blew another one. Remember preseason game three where the job was his if he kicked well. Well he missed his first kick. Not only did they miss on Stover they missed by not keeping GANO. At least he had some experience making big kicks at FSU. Haushka doesn't even have that.

On the other hand I'm waiting till end of November to give up on these guys if we can win the next three games, two of which at home and one at cleveland. I think we can turn the ship around.

Go Flacco!

One of our many needs is at WR. One of the heroes for the Giants in the Super Bowl two years ago, David Tyre, is playing on special teams. Why is he not play on Offense at WR??????

You can always count on Gaither to get called for at least two holds a game. Oher's natural position is left tackle. During the game at Minnesota with Oher at left tackle and Yanda at right the Ravens ran the ball very well, especially off the left side during the second half behind Oher. Why not try that again? Also didn't the Ravens draft Paul Kruger in the second round becuase of his pass rushing ability? So how come with the pass rush hurting so bad Kruger is not getting any playing time?

Our kicker is not the problem! Just because he's missed 2 field goals now he's the reason we're losing?? Come on people, wake UP!! We're playing a 4-3 defense and everybody and their mothers know we are a 3-4 team!! That itself has slowed down our defense drastically. We are not blitzing enough and as a result, QBs have a minimum of 4-5 second to get rid of the ball and that makes our corners look like fools. They are a lot better than they look. U folks forgot how Fabian looked last year when we were blitzing 24/7?? He looked fantastic. Now, new coordinator who is not calling the right plays and we're suffering cuz there's no pressure up front and any corner will get beat that way!! Im thinking we're gonna contact Lorenzo Neal soon and go back to RUN HEAVY style and use our OLs athleticism and toughness to our advantage. We got a tough schedule and what we need to do is to try to wear down defenses with Lo Neal and McClain. Ray Rice will do his thing as he's been, but once that MONSTER Le'ron come in and we throw Lo Neal in front of him, then we might be in business! We dont need a new kicker. Our WRs are good enough to do the job, ONLY IF Cam stops playin conservative. We need to come out and START FIRING from the GET GO!

There is no hurry for the Ravens to fire Hauschka or get a replacement at this time since the Ravens are on the brink of being out of playoff contention. If Hauschka misses another critical field goal he is history or if the Ravens make a dramatic turn around and actually make a playoff run, Hauschka will be replaced.

Rex Ryan. Now I think Harbaugh is a fine guy and can coach. But you bring in a new guy cuz daddy was a coach and mommy bakes cookies and you lose Ryan. That's why there's trouble in Dodge City. The trouble came from the top. Someone who doesn't know football decided this would be a nice thing to do. You can tell the players on the line and backfield are misfiring. It's not that sense of urgency. There's a feeling on the team I sense that there are missing parts. Someone jacked up the car on Highway 61 and stole the wheels.

Except for a few CBs and such this is a terrific team. I just think there's a certain chemistry missing. Everyone is looking for someone to step up and fill the void.

if you look at Adam Vinitari (?) you'll see a guy who was never known for being able to blast 60-yard field goals. what you DO have is someone who is utterly fearless when it's time to line up and kick a game-winner. i just don't think Hauschka has that same mentality, and i don't think he ever will. i don't want a Mike Vanderjagt - THE most accurate kicker EVER when it wasn't critical - who couldn't make a clutch kick if you gave him 3 chances.

this team needs to do some house cleaning. Landry, Gregg, Pryce, Carr, McGahee and Walker need to GO. NOW! Gooden should lose 20lbs and move to SS. Fabian needs to be installed as the nickel guy, and Webb needs to be given Fabian's spot at CB.

what a lot of people seem to miss is that it *seems* like Jarrett Johnson, Ray Lewis and Ed Reed are the only guys on D who seem to give a crap. everyone else - in particular Suggs (who has really disappointed me now that he's fat and happy b/c of that contract) - is either going through the motions or playing like they're lost. i feel like the Offense has some young talent that could end up being very productive (some day), but there is simply a dearth of raw playmakers - especially at WR.

Wake up, it's not how many he has missed, it is when he has missed them, granted this pass week it may not have mattered but at least it would have brought us back to one touchdown behind. As far as the Viking game, yes he did cost us the game because 3 points would have won it!
