Analyzing Harbaugh's comments about Stover

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh has been doing a little double talking this week about kicker Matt Stover. Several reporters, including myself, kept in close contact with Stover during the off season, and the Ravens never entered any type of negotiations with Stover. From the end of last season, the Ravens said they wanted to use only one spot on the roster for a kicker.

But when asked Wednesday if money or kickoffs were the reason that Stover wasn't re-signed, Harbaugh said: "No, it wasn't....Well, the kickoffs, we carried two kickers last year, and I've said before we're not opposed to carrying two kickers this year. Any time that you have a chance to carry one kicker you'd rather do that because you save a roster spot. And, that's been our position all along. You want to do that. But we're not opposed to carrying two kickers.

We're not opposed to carrying two kickers now if that becomes the situation. We haven't been opposed to it all year. We were unable to get Matt re-signed the way we wanted to. All the contract stuff, the negotiation stuff, the business stuff, that's not something that we talk about here."

Harbaugh couldn't talk about negotiations because there were none with Stover. The Ravens let one of the greatest kickers in NFL history leave town without trying to re-sign him. It was good that Harbaugh admitted he made a mistake in letting Stover go, but he should have stopped there. The rest is baloney.

Amen Mike.

Gerry Sandusky said on the radio last night that he personally talked to Stover, and there were contract hangups with regards to guarantees that Stover wanted, that the Ravens could not accept. Since that is part of contract negotiations, Mike, you are once again wrong. Hey, we're used to it, but you'd think you'd at least try to be right some of the time instead of making stuff up. It's getting old.

Who cares at this point we are going into our 10 game. Enough crying about a kicker when this team has bigger problems.

A lot of what he says is baloney. Like when he said the defensive backs played pretty well in the second loss to the Bengals. He should run for Congress. Seriously, I wish he would put a gag order on himself, because what he says has no substance.

Perhaps Harbaugh is opening up to the possibility of playing 2 kickers later in the year. Example, when Vinatieri is back with the Colts and Stover is then released/back on the Free Agent market.

Mike, your writing is baloney. You have NO IDEA what negotiations actually took place.

100% agree. They dumped, D-U-M-P-E-D Stover. It's Baloney with a capital B to say there were negotiations and an insult to Stover to boot (pun intended).

month or so back I told a friend, "This Coach Harbaugh will be here for ten years." Now, I find myself questioning his leadership abilities: I heard his remarks on Stover --- I felt once again, "why doesn't this man just admit a mistake?" -- then, I heard his remarks on Brady Quinn -- "he's a good kid always was -- sure he didn't mean to do it on purpose." -- he left Ray Lewis out there to be the bad guy --- I felt, is this coach ever going to show some emotion. Coach, Brady Quinn was not trying to tackle the runner -- he was chop blocking your multi-million dollar player -- who is now unavailable for the most important games of the year. And even that seem to not have upset enough to back up Ray Lewis --- at least Ray Lewis spoke his mind. It wasn't okay that Quinn said he was sorry and he surely does not look like a "good kid" to most of us. Show some fire and motivate this team, soon.

Analyzing Harbaugh's comments - we should be analyzing all his really dumb comments of which there are many. He says all the right things. Canned answers like someone who is lying or who just doesn't know enough to say something intelligent. It really is like watching a bush admin press conference, if we say the same stupid stuff over and over it will become true -- NOT. Yeah Coach that Cleveland game was exciting, to who??

I stopped watching anything that has Ravens media in it because this guy is a poser, he's a politician not a coach.

Our team has had serious issues all season and there is no sense of urgency from this guy, no thread of reality, no commitment to excellence.

Stover was only the tip of the iceberg.

Mike your the king of the double standards!

mlv

Amen.

Mike, I agree completely. It was clear all summer that the Ravens were jerking Stover around, without any real possibility of bringing him back. Sure, use a beloved local hero who has represented this team and city well since day one as a ruse to motivate a sham kicking competition between Hauscshka and Gano. Cut the guy who has shown he can hit pressure FGs for some rookie unknown quantity. Matt Stover has been nothing but professional and loyal to this team in city, and I'm ashamed that we haven't treated him with the same professionalism, gratitude and respect.

Why can't Harbaugh just say "We screwed up. We tried to cut corners and get one guy who could both kick field goals and launch booming kickoffs, and we ended up with neither. We knowingly took this risk, and it has likely cost us a game and may end up costing us more. And to add insult to injury, the "53rd man" that cutting Stover allowed us to keep ended up being a bust too. I made a mistake, in retrospect I would make a different decision. I'm sorry to Matt for the way we treated him and sorry to the fans for ignoring clear popular sentiment in favor of keeping Stover. The best thing I can say is that I have learned from this experience."

MLV has some great points as well. I appreciate that Harbaugh takes great pains to present himself as circumspect and thoughtful in the way he presents himself. But you have to back up your players. I'm not saying he should have gone on a tirade, but he could have calmly backed up Ray, and perhaps pointed out the discrepancy between fines our players have received (for going after players with the ball, in plays that did not result in injury) and the fine levied on Quinn (who went after someone who didn't even have the ball and caused a severe injury that could end his season and possibly cause lingering long-term issues). Was it a coincidence that Quinn targeted our leading pass rusher? To me his chop block looks premeditated and malicious, and should be penalized much more severely than he has. Great post

You guys think Billick was cocky?!? This guy will NEVER admit a mistake. Even when he does there is an excuse. He is so full of hot air it's ridiculous. He's going to improve the aura surrounding the team, how by allowing known drug user Snoop Dog to attend training camp? He's going to cut back on the radio shows for players? I guess that was a one-year commitment. He's going to cut down on the undisciplined penalties during the game? Really, is that why they lead the league in penalties? He's great at cliches though, gotta give him that one.

why can't we have one roster spot for the kicker AND punter?

Hey, Mikey! Methinks that Todd was referring to you and not Harbaugh. Am sure that Stover would not characterize a Ravens' offer that cut his salary to allow for a kick-off specialist as a negotiation. But, the Ravens might. All teams deal with a cap and the younger guy costs less under the cap. If Stover wanted to play here and accept less money, he'd still be a Raven.

As if it's not bad enough that they let Stover go, now he's making stuff up?! Wow...admit your own mistake already without the b.s.!

Awwww, poor wittle Mikey is offended at a slip up.

"It was good that Harbaugh admitted he made a mistake in letting Stover go, but he should have stopped there. The rest is baloney."

Oh, yeah? Pot meet kettle. I know it is your job to be an analyst, but I think you should be the last person to attack a person's credibility. Especially over this. It really is disgusting how this gone on the whole season.

"Canned responses". LOL. You get a coach that isn't like Harbaugh, say Belichick and everyone tears him down for being forthright about his decisions. Pick you poison, I'll take Harbaugh.

It's only a mistake if we can see what Stover would have done. Would he have hit the 46 yard game winner in Minn? The missed 36 yarder in Cinn meant nothing in the end but what if Stover had hit it? Would that have inspired the Ravens? I personally would have had Stover and Hushka on the roster. Same as last year. How important is that 53rd roster spot on game day?

The first replacement for Stover has'nt worked out and now #2 has a better resume'.Hardball helped make a decision early on,gambled a little and lost the bet on Haushka. Our kicker had one chance to win a game(Minn.) but the defense failed miserably to stop Favre,in the first place. At least we won a game deciding that Steve was'nt reliable enough instead of seeing him blow an actual game winner.Stover is a HOF Raven who kicks up to the 10 yd. line these days. It's always good field position for the other team on a decent return. That needs to change!
