Harbaugh: 'We know we're a good football team'

At his news conference Monday, John Harbaugh said that despite the up-and-down season the Ravens have had -- starting 3-0, then going 2-5 with several close loses -- he still believes his team can finish strong.

Despite everything that's happened, Harbaugh said, the Ravens are looking at the rest of the year as a six-game season.

"It's not the first six [games], it's the last six," Harbaugh said. "And you can look around the league already this year. It's not the first three, in our case. That's proven. It's the final six games that make the season as far as the regular season, and that's where we're at."

Harbaugh acknowledged he's heard some of the recent criticism, and so have the players. He also insisted that the team could overcome all that by focusing on its overall goals.

"It's interesting to me, and it's part of what makes the National Football League so great," Harbaugh said. "The drumbeat outside in a positive and a negative way is so fierce. And you naturally hear that, but inside and around our team, you can't let that affect you either way. When things are going great, everyone tells you how great you are, and you get carried away that way. Then you lose a couple games and everyone can tell you how inept you are, and you can't let it take you down that road either.

"We know we're a good football team. And I guarantee the people that play us know what kind of football team we are. The difference is finding a way to win those football games. That's what you have to do to be an elite football team in this league, and that's what we're striving for. I know we're going to be that. It's a matter of when. We need to make it happen this week."

Stop KNOWING you're a good football team (cause we've heard it time and time again), and start BEING a good football team when it matters... on the FIELD.

I never wanted to believe some of the rumors that were going around last year saying that without a doubt Rex Ryan was actually running this team. After watching coach harbaugh get out coached on many occasions and make some boneheaded mistakes, i am starting to attach some validity to that rumor. Some of the personal and on field decisions have been absolutely horrible this year. He does look over his head at times.

Check out the Guru's last few sentences...I think he gets $50 for everytime he says "football".

Yeah, yeah... A "good football" team, comprised of a bunch of "mighty men." Please spare us.

Well, Harbs is right this time.
Last six are more important than the first six. Of course, it all depends on your first six. Look at the Broncos. 6-0 to 6-4 and no bottom in sight.

A 5-5 record makes the Ravens only an average football team.

Johnny U had it right when he said, "Talk is cheap. Let's play football."

STFU Harbaugh and realize that poor coaching can make a potentially good team start to find creative ways to lose football games that they would have won with good coaching.

The honeymoon is close to being over for you and then your trite BS pronouncements aren’t going to be accepted as an explanation for losing games that a more competent coach would have won.

good speakings by hardballs

Coach, so okay -- it's a six game season (looks like you need to win all six, yes). The Ravens are a good team but most likely not a play-off team, we'll see.. Every game the Ravens lost was to a team that is in first place. Every team had a very good QB and a very good coaching staff .. You could have won maybe three of them -- with some better personnel decisions as to the 53 man rooster and better coaching from you and Cam. You asked the fans to scream Sunday, make noise, be loud, and they did for three hours. The might be up for one more -- so, find a way to win (start by looking at film from last year). There are no words to say that we have not heard.

I'm tired of hearing the after loss speeches about how we could have or should have done a better job! I can comew up with better game plain then what i'm seeing on Sunday for not even half the cost.

Well,he manned up about not being in the elite class, yet.Somebody in this org will need to explain why Flacco has lost some of his rookie mojo if Cam can't see the same thing us fans are observing. If they're hiding some facts on purpose for professional football reasons then I understand(injury,concussion,etc.).However,this offense is degenerating into a Billick situation(5 field goals) and a good team has the wherewithall to punch the rock in once in awhile to get the job done.Amen.

Coach Harbs is sounding more and more like his predecessor each week.

I'm really sick of hearing all that bs out of Harbaughs mouth! It took years for me to tire on Billick so this is not a good thing, just like the Ravens situation right now. I'm not ready to write Coach Harbaugh off yet. But that day seems to be getting closer.

I'm just waiting for his show. Maybe we'll get to hear him insult another fan when asked a valid question about why the team isn't ready to play. Clearly the offense wasn't ready and now he'll probably insult someone else and dodge the question again.

Note to Harbaugh - the fans are getting sick of the post-game BS lines. They're not even creative. It's beginning to look like Harbaugh is in over his head, both on the field and behind the microphone.

Get with it Harbaugh, because this line of nonsense isn't going to keep for long.

What do you expect him to say? The guy takes a team that went 5-11 the year before with a rookie QB to the AFC Championship game and ten games into the next season, fans around Baltimore are ready to fire him. Thank goodness our owner is not as irrational as most of you posting here are.

Harbaugh is right. We are a good team. Unfortunately we are losing because of coaching brain farts like shelving our 260 lb pro bowl running back in goal line situations, throwing the ball when in easy range for the go ahead field goal with less than two minutes left, and using our time outs in bunches, instead of one at a time. This team deserves better than what Harbaugh and Cameron are delivering this year.

Guy is too dumb to coach. Mighty Men sounds like a parody. he should be doing dinner theatre somewhere with Billick. The old soft shoe don't make it Harbs. Win or bye bye.

Really? I don't know how anyone can do this for a living. In his first year this guy goes 11-5 with a rookie QB and goes to the AFC Championship game. Now he's .500. Do you how many cities would jump up and down with glee to be .500? Christ we all want to win but cut this guy a break. He's halfway into his second year! Did he drop that pass in NE? Did he miss that FG against the Vikings? Did he allow Carson Palmer to drive 80 yards in a minute? If you want to be mad at someone be mad at the players.

When you pick a special teams coach to be head coach because he was the best interviewer, in the end all you've really done is pick the best interviewer. Harbaugh is in over his head and it's starting to show.

Cam seems slow to make in game adjustments and the calls are starting to be predictable. We keep hearing that it is a matter of execution , well it is week 11 and if you cant execute the plays by now then you might want to try some new things every so often. How about some Wild Cat with Troy Smith, how about some 4 wide sets with Rice in a 1 back set, how about more LJ Smith in pass patterns. McClain as a lead blocker is not working as well as last year when we had Neal leading the way.

I agree that our coaching needs to improve, but, we also need to have more dynamic game plans. Last season we saw a much greater variety of play calls.

Also, we really need to look at getting greater separation in our receiving corps. whether this is something we need to address in the offseason remains to be seen.

In terms of Joe, we need to remember that QB's like Peyton and Drew Brees were up and down their first few seasons as well. It's all part of developing as a player.

What a bunch of fairweather whiners!

I think this is a good football team but they have to prove it in these last six games!!!! They have played tough competition exceptionally well, the Bengals less so but they were in position to win the first one, but they're not FINISHING GAMES. Win the next two games and the fans will have a lot more confidence in this team.

As the offense continues to sputter I wonder if all the people making snide comments about "the old days" with Billick realize that their sarcasm is actually helping to defend Billick. Even Cam Cameron (The Sun's 2008 Offensive MVP) can't make an offense devoid of playmakers into a high-powered attack.

No Coach Harbaugh your team is not a good footbal team. It is a .500 Team. You are your record.

And that is the Bottom Line

Boy, I would hate to be in a foxhole with you guys. The moment it gets tough you are ready to roll out. A few wins and i guess you will jump back in. Last I checked, Rex needs more help than our coach.

I don't think its all Harbs fault...His coaching staff isn't as good as it should be...I think Harbs rushed into putting a staff together so he could start getting ready for his first season...But i do blame Newsome for most of the teams problem....Newsome can't fine free agents that can help the team...except for a few players Newsome has failed ...He has failed in drafting players we need..Newsome wants to draft "The best player on our board"...Well if that "Best Player on our Board" is a Linebacker...and you have a REAL NEED for a Cornerback or receiver...you take the REAL NEED player !

Last year the Ravens won a few games that they were lucky to win, and probably should have lost.
This year the Ravens have lost a few games that they should have won- lost with a touch of bad luck.
Last year nobody expected the Ravens to end up in the AFC Champs game.
This year a lot of people were expecting the Ravens for a strong playoff run.

See a pattern here?
Last year the Ravens and their coaches were playing looser because nobody expected them to be that great. This year they are playing tight because many had and have high expectations.

Ravens- Just loosen up and play the game a step at a time. Don't worry about the season, don't belabor the past. Ignore the crap going on in the press, screw the consequences. Play in the moment of the game. Enjoy the priveledge of being an NFL player-
and the wins will be the by-product.

I agree with the coach's decision to go for the touchdown near the end of the game instead just playing for the field goal. It's not their fault Flacco made the wrong decision. Down by less than a field goal wouldn't have been enough points to hold back Manning. I also believe we are not seeing a lot of good Ravens players on the field because they still aren't buying into Harbaugh's system. Several players such as McGahee, Mclain, Demetrius Williams, and even Matt Stover(before he left) may not exactly see eye-to-eye with the coach. There may be more good ravens that won't be back on the team next year.

How are we a GOOD team, coach Harbaugh. We struggled on National television we could only muster up one TD, fast forward one week and the Detriot Lions toasted them for 400 passing yards. We are as bad as it gets right now. 3 shots at the endzone from the 1 and we cant get in. We deserve to be home watching the playoffs.

They are not a good team RIGHT NOW good teams find a way to win against Indianapolis this past sunday. If they beat Pittsburgh they still have a shot at the post season if not lets just stop this non-sense(THAT THEY ARE A GOOD TEAM) they are done and its draft time.

I cannot remember a game last year where we were beaten up front with the possible exception of what the Giants did to the d-line .

One game you can blame it on scheme. Two games you have an issue. Three games you have major problems. The Bengals beat the hell out of the offensive line twice this year and Sunday the Colts pushed them back several times on short yardage situations including the goal line.

This is not a technique or scheme issue. It is an issue that needs to be addressed through free agency and the draft.

Season over.

To all of the Billick bashers/haters he has a super bowl ring Harbs does not so stop that foolishness. Lets see when the next time will be when the team wins another one.

Good doesn't win games... when will the ravens offense show up, maybe they think the game is at 1pm and will actually show up by kickoff...

Time to step up and earn your money Offense and Coaching.

Bill Cowher is likely to come out of his brief retirement next year. If the Ravens' season ends up where I think it is going{7 and 9 or worse} I wouldn't screw around another year with Harbaugh. His decisions are a day late and a dollar short at this point and he is not up to prime time. His "Mighty Men" forgot where the end zone is.

It started with Matt Stover. If you cut your long time field goal kicker you had better be CERTAIN that you have something better. He HOPED he had something better. Wrong.

Not acquiring a big time receiver was mistake number two, shared by Harbaugh and Newsome. "I like our receivers. I think they are as good as any group in the league". That's what Harbaugh said coming out of training camp. Other than Derrick Mason his" Good as any group" have been invisible.

He choked on Sunday by not understanding the rules and blowing through his last two timeouts. An experienced Head Coach would have gotten the ball back with 1:30 to go and a timeout remaining. He literally took the ball away from his own offense.

For those who think I am a fair weather fan, I didn't like the choice of Harbaugh to begin with, he had no real bonafides. He got lucky last year and this year he has had to coach and his"Mighty Men" are looking to him for leadership.

I've been every bit as upset with all of these heart-breaking, last minute losses as the next diehard Ravens fan, but I am not ready to give up on Coach Harbs. Even the best coaches go through some struggles but they also find a way to right the ship. Let's see how these final six games go before we tar and feather our HC.

Just about everyone on here is the worst kind of fan. I swear, if I were sitting next to you, I'd slap you in the face. Are you kidding me?
All anyone can do on here is cry and criticize. It's a joke.

1st and goal on the 1 yard line! I don't care WHAT THE PLAY CALL IS- that's a mentality. The offensive lines needs to get that push and we need to get the ball in the endzone there. There are so many areas where this teams has fallen short- and it's all on the players.

If Clayton doesn't drop that pass in New England and we go on to win- is Harbaugh a better coach?

If Haushcka doesn't miss the kick at Minnesota, is Harbaugh a better coach?

Is we score a touchdown on 1sdt and goal- or Flacco doesn't throw the interception, is Harbaugh a better coach?

First game against Cinci, if Flacco doesn't overthrow Clayton wide open in the end zone- is Harbaugh still a bad coach?

You guys are panzies with no opinion. You just love to bash a team when they're down.

The Ravens overachieved last year with a rookie quarterback and now you boneheads that talked so much smack are having to eat crow. And don't get me wrong- I'm a diehard Ravens fan- but damn- we have a 2nd year quarterback who looks like he could be one of the great ones- but he IS still learning- and we've had guys fail to step up when needed.

Has Harbaugh made a few mistakes- sure- he's still a 2nd year head coach as well- but this team just isn't there yet. Harbaugh and staff has put them in a position to win EVERY GAME- and they just havent come thru.

But keep bashing away you brainless fair weather fans. I can't wait to hear you when the Ravens start winning again.

and ps- For those idiots who are starting to "believe the rumors" from last year- how is rex Ryan doing in New York? Man if I played for the Ravens- I'd give a big F U to every fan out there for the needless ranting.

A good football team? No, not really. They're a .500 football team, for a number of reasons.

1. The owner has allowed Ray Lewis to influence and cloud his decisions.

2. The GM has made decisions that have hurt the team talent-wise.

3. Cam Cameron is overrated.

4. Rosburg is horrible.

5. Mattison, coach Harbaugh's daddy's friend, has dropped the ball, although he might finally be getting up to speed.

6. John Harbaugh does not have the team properly prepared, and routinely gets outcoached.

Harbaugh said,
"We know we're a good football team. And I guarantee the people that play us know what kind of football team we are.

HELLO....... Of course they know what kind of team you are....PREDICTIBLE!!!

Try changing some plays for once....
Try coaching the players for once.....
Start sitting players that keep making the same bonehead mistakes for once...... Theres too much to list.........and I'm too frustrated with your candy attitude... Get some backbone.........
FOR ONCE!!!!!!!

"It's not the first six [games], it's the last six," Harbaugh said.

I could've sworn we've been told numerous times that every game counts...we just take 'em one game-at-a-time...we don't look ahead at the schedule...just tell us where to play and we'll be there...

Now apparently the first 6 games don't matter, the last 6 really matter and nobody knows the importance of the middle 4 games. Interesting...

OK! I've seen enough of these overpaid, overrated and underperforming playersthat we continually put on the field. Put some hngry players on the field. By that I mean our second team. Maybe they can perform better than our first stringers that are walking through a 60 minute game that is streched out to 3 plus hours with breaks for commercials. Not only that these prima donnas are not on the playing field for the whole 3 hours,defense/ offense and substitutions on downs. I know that if I had a job that gave me three hours to do a 60 minute job I would be able to do it not only more accurate but also produce a better product or service. Funny, the referees are on the field for the entire game running up and down the field without substitutions. Hell, no wonder they can't make good calls. They gotta be tired. Lets give Troy a chance at quarterback to give a new dimension to the offense. The outcomes can't be any worse. One more loss and let the experimenting begin!

Harbaugh is a softy. You want to get far ahead in the games. Make better deccissions and judgement. He is not as aggressive as I think he is. Just didn't make sense of what kind of statement they're trying to show Indy. If you cannot pound the ball in the endzone, do other play actions. this is like watching the old offense for 13 years.. Cam, you need to tell Flacco ahhh theres other receivers too and 2 tightends..
