Ex-Raven Stover supports Hauschka
Baltimore Sun reporter Ken Murray was able to talk with former Ravens kicker Matt Stover from Indianapolis on Wednesday. Stover, 41, said he knows what Ravens kicker Steve Hauschka is going through and wants him to succeed.
“I wish Steve Hauschka and the Baltimore Ravens nothing but the best. I know the kicking position is a pressure job. The organization knows that [statement] is heartfelt,” said Stover, who returns to Baltimore to face the Ravens on Nov. 22.
Here's more on Hauschka in today's Baltimore Sun.
Since signing with the Colts on Oct. 14, Stover has made 6 of 6 field goals and 8 of 8 extra points in three games. All three were inside domes -- the first at Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis and the other two at Lucas Oil Stadium. His longest field goal this season has been 40 yards.
One of the reasons the Ravens went with 24-year-old Hauschka was his stronger leg. Stover missed a total of 11 field goals his last two years with the Ravens. Of those misses, eight were 40 yards or longer. He was just 13 of 21 in attempts 40 yards or longer.
Take away those longer attempts and Stover was nearly perfect in 2007 and 2008. In 2006, he made 28 of 30 kicks (93.3 percent) and was 6 of 7 from 40 yards or longer.
Hauschka is 8 of 11 this season, his first as a full-time kicker. In his rookie season with the Cleveland Browns in 1991, Stover was 16 of 22. The following two years he was 21 of 29 and 16 of 22. But after he turned 30 with the Ravens, Stover was almost automatic, making more than 84 percent of his kicks each year from 1999-2006.
