« Lardarius Webb as a QB? | Main | Practice report »

October 29, 2009

Webb has received more work with first-team defense

Rookie third-round pick Lardarius Webb has received “a lot more reps in practice with the first unit,” defensive coordinator Greg Mattison said Wednesday.

Webb later said he has primarily practiced at nickel back, but he has taken some snaps at cornerback. His increased work likely won’t lead to a starting job for Webb on Sunday, but it’s an indication that the Ravens like his progress. The Ravens benched cornerback Fabian Washington last game and replaced him with Frank Walker, who also struggled at Minnesota.

There has been some clamoring from the fan base for the Ravens to use Webb at cornerback.

“I think his role will keep being expanded all the time,” Mattison said.

The secondary has struggled this season, one of the reasons why the Ravens rank 23rd against the pass this season.

Well Webb can't be any worse than Foxworth , Washington ,Carr or Walker

Sure can't hurt. He's hungry and maybe we get some beginners' luck before the league gets a book on him. He needs vetting anyway to see if he can replace Washington next season. While on the subject of the secondary, how are things in Nakamura? Maybe time for him to get more of Landry's snaps?

Mazal Tov!!

I see Webb taking over Washington's spot next year when he hits FA, so he should see substantial time at nickel. Plus, he can't be any worse than Frank Walker. We'll need Webb to step up against the Broncos, they're not as explosive without Cutler's arm but Orton's efficient and obviously they've got great talent at WR.

Mattison is horrible. Why didn't Ozzie try and bring back Mike Nolan? Mattison is proving game by game that he is no NFL caliber D Coordinator. That is why Ed Reed is constantly out of place, because he not only has to cover for the other secondary players but he has to read offenses since Mattison evidently can't.
