Ravens need to change approach with D-linemen
Since there has been so much talk about the lack of pressure this season, it it interesting to note that the Ravens have yet to develop a top-notch pass rushing defensive lineman since the team moved to Baltimore for the 1996 season.
They've had some really good ones like end Michael McCrary and tackle Sam Adams, but both of those players learned their skills in Seattle.
The Ravens have had Peter Boulware, but he was an outside linebacker, much like Terrell Suggs even though the Ravens currently list Suggs as a defensive end.
Again, it's time for a change of philosophy. Instead of just drafting or signing a lot of run stoppers, the Ravens need to switch up and find, good all-around defensive linemen.

Comments
Not that they are a dime a dozen but I agree that they have never really developed a dominant, or even very good, end. The sad part is that although I believe Suggs is good, he is not as good as HE thinks he is. He couldn't hold Boulware's or McCrary'a jock. Those two were pivotal in developing the atttitude, Play Like A Raven.

Mike I couldn't agree with you more. The Ravens have no good defensive line, it's like Ozzie and Eric DeCosta are in love with Terrell Suggs, Adalius Thomas, Hybrid type of players. Those players don't consistently get pressure on the qb. If this team doesn't get Haloti Ngata help soon then the perception will be he's a bust.

This team needs a new defensive coordinator, wheteher you want to admit it or not!

Until Suggs plays like he is paid to do, he will be considered overrated. He wanted Freeney money, but Freeney gets to the quarterback 9 times of 10. Suggs doesn't. So far it has been a bad investment in Suggs for the Ravens, and it will continue to be. Suggs cannot excel when he is double teamed. Freeney still does.

To change the approach. Would mean one would have to know something about the defense. It's obvious with the coaching staff in place. They aren't qualified to develop players. We are witnessing the Ravens a new. Time has reversed itself. We have gone back to the beginning. All offense, NO Defense!!!!!!!!!

This is a very convenient "coulda shoulda woulda" type topic. Would we even be talking about this if the Ravens beat New England, didn't fold in the 4th against Cincy or if Hauschka hits the game winning FG?? They can always improve but it's clear that Mattison has a much different philosophy than Rex Ryan. Rex got the most out of his players based upon their strengths. Mattison is going to play the scheme he thinks should work regardless of personnel.

I can't help wondering why Mike Nolan was not hired to replace Rex Ryan ... this is his first year at Denver and it's clear he is doing a great job. And Mattison is not doing a great job or even a very good job. Why would the Ravens hire a college coach with zero NFL experience (unless I am wrong about that).

This entire defense has some flaws that need to be worked out in a hurry. It starts at the top with defensive coordinator Greg Mattinson. He's not getting the people in the right positions to make the plays. I thought that we would breeze by on defense another year. Man, was I wrong.

Kruger may be the defensive end the Ravens are looking for, but we'll never know unless he sees the field. I guess the Ravens will have to deliver a blowout or be blown out for him to see any playing time at this point.

totally right!
since mCcrary, anthony weaver had been our best true Defensive end... sounds not good...
whatever we play 34 or 43, we defintively need a true End who can stop the run and rush the passer... and i 'm not sure dwan edwards is our long term solution... and kruger is another hybrid-type player, definetevely not a true DE.
hope this area will be solve in the next draft...

As badly as the Ravens need a
RDE and a LDE who can create havoc, cause hurries, and sack the QB;...DE isn't even their 3rd most pressing need. With the need for (2) WRs,(2) shut down CBs, SS, & a K, the DE position will probably have to wait.

Why isn't Barnes getting more playing time? If we are having issues with pass rushing, why not get a guy who has evidently more speed than our current pash rushers playing?

The defense has to decide what defense they want to play. Right now some of the guys are still playing the organized kaos defense of rex and some are playing the more disciplined defense of Maddison. I don't care which they play 3 man or 4 man front, we have the players for either, but they better all better be playing the same come game day starting this Sunday. Rex's philosophy was to jam the middle and rush with the blitzing linebackers. Maddison is looking for a more conventional approach of letting the ends rush the passer and letting the linebackers play a more traditional role. Right now we don't have the linemen for that scheme so let the linebackers blitz and let the linemen clog the middle until we can develop some rushing linemen. We have the players in place for the 3-4 so let's play it for now. It's what most teams in the NFL are switching to anyway. It sure has worked for Pittsburgh for a long time.

Although Halotti Ngata is an amazing athlete with unbelievable speed ,agility, quickness, and ball skills for a man of his size.....I had hoped they would draft Brodrick Bunkley who was unbelievable at the combine that year....he is a penetrator that as you point out they have not had.

Your right Mike, The Ravens do need a change in how they draft linemen. Pass rush has been for years.

Now our new head coach sees that you must make sure. Whomever you hire, has to be able to perform up to NFL standards. Rex should be our head coach not an average special teams coach(John H.)!!!! You gave the keys to the Corvette to John. Now it's a Malibu. Take them away from him before it becomes a Aveo!

I have been preaching the same thing all year mike and i still think suggs is way out of shape and over weight. When i mentioned that before you took offense to that.Haloti may be a great athlete for his size but he still doesn't generate enough pass rush up the middle, pryce was that man, but now is old and washed up. We get our best results when bannon and dewan are in the game . Kelly gregg is so finished it's not funny. I still will say that the signs have been there for quite a while and ozzie hasn't taken the necessary steps to fix the problem. Signing suggs to that big deal was a big mistake , he is really over rated for that kind of money he got. And not to keep beating a dead horse into the ground, landry and ed reed because of injuries will continue to hurt the ravens more then help. When both were healthy they played the run as good as any safety combination in the league but are just average players now. You saw what impact troy p made last week in his return to pitts. Ed reed right now couldn't hold his jock strap. They can continue to blame the defensive coord all they want we just don't have to players on defense that we once did .End of story.

Dwayne Edwards is a man on a mission;he finally seems healthy.Turn him loose up the middle.I'm satisfied that Trevor Price is making the effort to reach the qb this year.I say be a little more patient and let Mattison work some kinks out that we've all discovered lately.

Hi Mike :
I think the Ravens should add Barnes, Burgess or Mclain on passing downs. Have Pryce, Ngata, Suggs down lineman. Have Gooden, Barnes standing as blitzing linebackers.
Switch Gooden to left outside linebacker and move J Johnson to inside Linebacker. Gooden is more of a pass rushing LB. J Johnson is more of a run stopper.
Allowing Jim Leonhard to leave was a huge mistake, as we see that now. This defense has to become a blitzing, pressure defense so we can help out our corners.

It is time to fire Mattison before the season gets out of hand. Mattison is a college coach. I don't understand why Harbaugh is pulling a Billick and sticking with someone (remember Boller) who everyone knows is a bust. As a season ticket holder, I am disgusted at Harbaugh's stubbornness in refusing to admit he made an error in judgment when he hired Mattison.
