Ravens mixing in younger players on defense
The Ravens are starting to realize that some of their best defensive players are getting older as well. During the past two weeks, the Ravens have been getting in some of the younger players like defensive tackles Dwan Edwards and Brandon McKinney. Both have responded and played reasonably well. That should be able to keep end Trevor Pryce and tackle Kelly Gregg fresher for the fourth quarter. Both Gregg and Pryce have struggled at times this season.

Comments
Mike,
Landry is a liability in the passing game. In obvious passing situations why not use one of our younger and faster safeties on the back end. Offenses are locating him and throwing the ball at 70 percent of the time to his side of the field. The Cinn game winning TD and the TE TD in Minn are prime examples.

Mike, whether you liked my comments the other day or not the truth being said is the NFL is changing the way they operate. There are many more young good qb's in the league and the games is moving to be a more offensive passing game then in the past thitrend started a couple of years ago and the ravens have not adjusted. They ravens no longer have any use for a 1 dimensional player like Kelly gregg, while haloti is still great aganst the rush he doesn't generate nough pass pressure up the middle. Trevor pryce is over the hill and now is very ineffective. I think you took expection to my comment on suggs the other day being out of shape, but that is the absolute truth. Look at denvers defense if you want to see how to attack a psss happy team, they have made 8 new changes on a defense from a year ago, they have young athletic players that have speed and can all tackle. Harbaugh can try and suger coat this situation all he wants in regards to the fact that we will mak changes during the bye but the players we have aren't going to get any younger or better.I hope you will post my comment this time and comment if you will.

It is good to see some of the young guys getting some reps, let's get some of the younger d-backs in there also they can't do any worse than what the other pretenders have done! I don't think anyone however will flourish under Mattison's systemn. Me is way too vanilla and predictable and his players look confused and out of position way too often! That is coaching Mike, no matter how you slice it!

About damn time and while they're at it can we please see what paul kruger and ladarius webb can do too, they definitely can't be worse then what we've been seeing out there so far this season, especially in webb's case

Yea, Landry doesn't look like the same player he was 2 years ago...rust? lingering affects of the injury? I noticed Webb was getting some playing time with the defense in the Minnesota game. Hope he continues to develop.

@rodney payne, while landry is indeed not playing well he is not the biggest liability in the passing game. The plays you are talking about neither of them was on landry, that was chris carr and ray lewis on that TD pass against cincy and ed reed was the one who got looked of on the TD pass to shancoe, on the second TD pass to shancoe you could see the LB released him when he fell for the play action fake down on the goaline. I don't want to get on here to defend landry because he is struggling just as everyone else is on defense but he is second on the team in tackles and also tied for the team lead in int.'s

Gregg is getting pushed all over the place. I believe his knee just doesn't have the strength, nor does he have the balance he used to have. He's getting pushed sideways in to Ngata which takes Ngata out of his gap. Teams are running in the gap vacated by Gregg after he gets pushed out, and they're 4 yards down the field before our linebackers can react. Time to get Bannon back in the lineup, and Edwards spelling Pryce more often. Suggs needs to make more initial hits and get in the QBs face more often. Landry is playing scared, and avoiding head on tackles. Reed is trying to do too much to cover for him and the CBs. It looks like half the defense is still running the Ryan defense and half is running the Maddison schemes. We need to get on the same page. With most teams going to the 3-4, because of all the passing teams, and with that scheme working for us the past few years, maybe we need to to use it more often. Except for Ray our linebackers are young and fast. Lets give Ray that other linebacker in the middle. Play Ngata nose up on the center so he doesn't get pushed from the side, and shoot the gaps vacated by the guards helping block Ngata, this will free up the middle linebacker blitzes and stunts by our outside linebackers and ends. Our defense so far is as boring as our offense was under Billick.

This is why i said before they drafted Flacco last year that drafting a quarterback was not the thing to do at that time.....because the defense was near the end of its shelf life.....all they had to do was draft Mckelvin, Cromartie, Talib or Jenkins and let Smith or a veteran quarterback take them to the superbowl.....their defense would have been solid enough....Camron could have gotten it done without a greenhorn like Flacco....instead they took advantage of Smith's illness and used it as an excuse to give Flacco one year of on the job training at the expense of going to the superbowl......as if getting to the AFC championship game was no big deal...thats because they always took the defense for granted and unrealistically assumed it would keep them at the top of the league forever ...even with no corners of which they refused to draft a decent one since Mcalister in 1999...well guess what...the party's over....you made your franchise quarterback but your timing was inconsiderate of the the fact that you defenses time was running out....now live by your franchise qurterback and see how far he takes you with a regular NFL defense....overpaid idiots.

Mattison is over-matched. At least we can't lose in the bye week. Use the time to put in some 3-4 schemes and turn the pass rush over to a deep corps of young LBs blitzing. Pass rush might make our secondary almost adequate.

Wow you guys sound like the fans of the Rams or maybe even the Redskins. The ship is not sinking yet guys. We are 3-3 after losing 3 straight close games that went down to the wire...to very good teams I might add. Things could be much worse. Just look at the previously mentioned Redskins. Talk about terrible. We have a great group of football players who are trying to find their own chemistry. There is no need to panic. The defense is allowed to have a few off games...they have earned that much over the past 10 years of dominance. Ray Lewis is still the leader he has always been, and always will be until the final snap he plays in the NFL. The Ravens will have a great opportunity next Sunday to turn all this around and earn back some of the respect they have lost with the media and some fans. When Denver comes to town next Sunday M&T will be rocking just like it always is for a big game. I expect the defense to come out fired up and well rested.
Also, to Rob who posted earlier, Flacco was easily the right pick looking back. There is no way any of those defensive players have had the impact Flacco has had. This offense needed a jump start and that's exactly what it got with Flacco. The Ravens will be able to pick up a quality defensive player this offseason either through free agency or the draft (most likely the draft). One last thing- I wouldn't write off Lardarious Webb. He certainly seems to have a great motor. He runs kicks back hard and I wouldn't be surprised if he breaks one when Denver comes to town (i.e. Darren Sproles; Monday Night Football). Maybe he could add a little intensity and fire to our secondary if he could get a few more reps. Overall, no need to panic folks. Ravens are in a great position to still make a strong run into the playoffs. We always seem to play better on the road in the playoffs anyway. Go Ravens.

the ravens will bounce back with a vengence. i just dont want 2 see chriss carr on the field anymore, and landry needs 2 step his game up
Posted by: tony410 | October 21, 2009 10:39 PM
I totally agree with Adam. The Ravens have had three of the worst defensive performances I've ever seen them have, had them against some of the better teams in the league, and were still very much in every one of them in the final minutes.
This ship has not sunk yet, and any real Ravens fan would give them more than 3 weeks of very competitive losses before abandoning it. You guys have been reading too much of Mike "Eeyore" Preston's naysaying.
Rob, you are clearly out of your mind.

I am sorry, but we are not a good team right now. Great teams win close games. To be the best you have to beat the best. So please stop the excuse that we lost to good teams. That just makes it seem like the teams we did beat weren't good (and right now they aren't). Our defense has lost a step. Our corners aren't looking good. Our defense as a whole isn't looking good. Last season I could count on us for a big play on defense every game (a ff, int, or a sack) at crucial times during the game. This season, we give up the big play on crucial downs. I don't know if we just need to adjust to our new DC or that we have serious holes to fill on defense. I expect us to draft a WR receiver next year because of how many WRs on our roster this year may be gone in 2010. But the rest of the draft will be on defense. Not sure how long Mattison lasts either. Hopefully we can right the ship because at the beginning of the season we had such high expectations. I would hate for us to be a .500 team this year. We have no gimmes for the rest of the season.

In response to Rob's comments I just have to say you are entitled to your opinion however immature they may be. If you look at our division, why are the steelers and the Bengals able to compete? Because they have good QB's that can throw downfield and also keep the play going. Why did Cleveland have success with Anderson early? Same reason.
We already went down the road with a great defense and no QB. It got us a Super Bowl but that defense is not sustainable. You don't win consistently with just defense - see Ravens, Tampa Bay. You must be able to score points or you will constantly be bringing in new players.
The Flacco pick will in time be the single greatest draft pick in ravens history. And let's not forget - even the Super Bowl Ravens secondary was torched several games during the 2000 season.
I am tired of seeing the old defensive Ravens winning or losing games 10-7. One other item - Last year the ravens started off with 2 wins, then lost 3 straight, then were 4 minutes away from the Super Bowl.
As far as not making the defense better - Let's remember they drafted Gooden, McClain, Zibkowski, Hakamura, and Webb. I believe they all play defense. Also with Landry and Gregg returning from not playing most or all of 2008, it was like getting 2 good defensive players back into a strong lineup. They also drafted Edwards a few years ago to help spell Pryce as he gets older, so your argument really hold no merit.

Maybe Mattison should hire R. Lee Ermy to help get the message across!!

Rookies must know all of their assignments and opposing coordinators will recognize when they are in the game. Now who do you think will they consider to be a weak link in the defense as they play more?I say the coaches are right to gradually work the young ones in over time during the season(except for injuries,of course).

AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO REALIZIES THAT ALL THESE GUYS ON EVERY TEAM ARE PROFESSIONALS PAID TO WIN. SO STOP CRYING WHEN WE LOSE A COUPLE GAMES. THIS IS WHAT COMPETITION IS ABOUT.
