Pagano accepts the blame
With generous helpings of criticism aimed at the Ravens' secondary, secondary coach Chuck Pagano said he is just as culpable for the defensive backfield's mistakes as his players.
But Pagano said ranting and raving about the secondary's problems aren't going to solve the issue.
"I could go in there and just get irate," he said. "But that’s the last thing they need. We need to say, ‘Why? Why is it happening?’ Point out why, fix the technique, and if it’s the communication, fix the communication, and play the coverages. They’ve shown the ability on certain plays. It’s just consistency. If someone gets beat up front, it’s not a home run. But we all know on the back end, if we screw up back there, the next thing you’re calling for is the block team on a PAT. They understand that, and we understand that. We’ve got to do a better job of coaching, and that’s my responsibility."
Pagano said he has resisted listening to talk radio or reading Internet message boards. He even canceled his wife's subscription to The Sun.
"Obviously, you’re going to hear it and it’s going to get back to you," he said. "But like I tell those guys, we’ve opened up a can of worms and until we put out the fire, it is what it is. They understand that, playing the position and I understand that, coaching the position. It’s a little bit of that deal where if you’re playing really well and shutting people down, boy, they love you. And when it doesn’t happen and you’re giving up big, explosive plays, you’re not worth a darn. … You’ve got to stay consistent. You’ve got to have conviction in what you’ve done for 26 years as a coach and what you know as a player and stick to the grind and don’t press. The harder you try, sometimes the worse it gets."

I commend this guy for stepping up and trying to be part of the solution for his role. He must realize there is a problem and is willing to take responsiblity. Seems like he's a stand up guy. Now only if the overpaid players and the defensive coordinator would do the same.
Greg Mattison is showing that he is a college coach. He hasn't made any adjustments to make this defense better than what its showing. He also needs to step up and accept his failures. That goes to show its not what you know, but who you know. If Harbaugh continues to give him a free pass, then he will ultimately be held responsible for the lack of production by the defense. That might not be a bad thing.

Is it hard to understand that people love you when you're playing well and shutting people down and hate you when your giving up big explosive plays? When you're getting paid millions and you suck, people are going to complain. It will be interesting to see how they do against Marshall, the guy we could have had . . . Webb better replace Carr. What about the others? Well we always have Frank Walker :((

Pagano is putting his head in the sand............Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results............there must be changes for Landry and carr, both are glaring weaknesses and with Zbikowski and Webb waiting in the wings , there is no reason not to make these two changes , it can't be much worse !

Pagano come from and what qualifications does he have? I honestly don't know anything about this guy

OK,I give him credit for accepting some responsibility so lets see where 2 weeks of reflecting on some bad habits with the players involved has some effect on Sunday.By the way,is he going to cancel his wife's internet service, too?I don't think so!

Bob D,
Pagano has the creds to be where he is. He's done really well everywhere else that he's coached. Check his creds at wikepedia. I think the problem is that we really have no talent at CB, it's painfully obvious. And as far as the safety position is concerned, Landry, he's timid due to prev injury. Reed, like it or not, he's past his prime, done !
I'm out !

Too bad Mattison has not faced up to his mishandling of the defense. Does he feel bad that he has ruined the reputation of our defense? I wish he (Mattison) would resign! He was not ready for the NFL and is clearly not who the Ravens needed.

I think they should get a chance to make thing better and improve but one glaring fact is every time Frankie Walker is in on a play it's almost always a penalty. this guy is a TURD and does nothing but talk a good game but his play can never back his mouth up. If you are a average to below average player shut your mouth and just play . If he made half the effort to improve his game as he does trash talking he would be a above average player.

I commend Coach Pagano for taking ownership of the problem but is that enough. I would like to feel he has a grasp of the issues and has some ideas on how to solve the problems; I did not get that feeling. Communication seems to be a large part of the problem but there appears to be more. I have questions about why the Ravens seem to play press coverage quite a bit less than they did under Rex. Is it because these corners (especially Walker, Carr and Foxworth) can't press effectively. Also, when the Ravens blitz a DB (usually a Safety)creating man coverage down field, can these corners cover man-to-man 20 yards down field? The last thing is the effect that the lack of push by the defensive middle of the Ravens' line has on the defensive backfield. Unless we get more push up the middle, the QB has more time and can step into his throw. This means the DBs have to cover longer, the QB can get more on his throw and the ball placement will be better. I my opinion, Chuck Pagano should work to overcome the communications problems, coach these guys up a little better on playing press and help them with playing man a little better. However, the real key is to get more pressure up the middle and seal the QBs escape routes.

Its commendable that he is taking the blame ,but he and Mattison are part of the problem .Chuck Pagano is a career college coach just like Greg Mattison . Neither has no clue how to run an NFL pro style defense

I am getting sick and tired of hearing all of the players and coaches spout the company line cliche's. They are for losers! Winners don't use cliche's like Rat lewis has been doing and also John Harbaugh and now Pagano. Winners just don't use excused , thay go out and play football. What the Ravens need to do not is quit acting like everything is okay and go PLAY FOOTBALL or start making vacatin plans for Dec. and January. The fans deserve better than loser's cliches!!!

It's not only the secondary. The defense just doesn't seem "ready" each week. They're not getting pressure on the quarterback and not as effective stopping the run.
These things must be addressed or the secondary will be toast anyways.

If he can't adjust, Mattison wouldn't be the first college coach to not make it in the NFL. Foxworth and Washington may be better suited to a zone base defense due to closing speed and lack of power. Zbig has got to get the nod over Landry. The injury may have been too much of a scare for the latter and the former is always around the ball.
Also, with this offense, the defense should totally scrap any type of late game "prevent" scheme. The only thing it prevents is the Ravens' offense from getting another chance to score. In the last few minutes, blitz like mad and force a stop instead of being bled slowly.

The refs cost us a win again last week. They have been out to get us since the start of mini-camp. Mark my words, the yellow flags will be flying in the closing minutes against the Bronco's and we will have no one to blame for our loss except the zebras.

I had a previous post and it will be similar to this one. These are true professionals- coaches and players who know their game. We don't know their profession- and need to stay at bay- let the team and coaches do their business. As the coach suggested, he doesn't read this craziness anyway. Running a team, being a player is just like an employee in the work place. If an employee is not doing well, you conduct an assessment to find root causes, measure against the standard, train them right (he took responsibilty for not coaching right), then let them loose. Over time if they don't do well, then let'em go. I'm sure that if you folks were not doing well, you'd want to be trained or coached before released. Make sense folks?

Pagano was DB coach for the Raiders, when their D was good a few years ago, under Rob Ryan. Before that with the Brownies for 4 yrs, when they were middle-of-the-pack defensively. Before that, 11 yrs in college. He knows his business. They also have Mark Carrier coaching the unit, and he knows his business too.
Pagano is not the problem. A lack of pass rush is, and maybe Mattison's lack of pro experience.

The coaches job is HARD right now because the player situation is challenging. I can understand working with Reed for this year and maybe next, but to support him with two others with neck injuries is a problem.
I want these players to think about the rest of their lives and I want the Ravens to thank them and move on.
I can't hit up the coach until we have a healthy secondary that can cover tight and deliver the hit.
You can't possibly be elite if three out of four DB's have neck injuries and are all thinking about the angle of the hit than just making the hit.
This is a big reason things are helter skelter out there.

How frustrating this year's defense has been! As soon as the Ravens finally get their offense going, the defense begins to fall apart. The cliche truly applies here: the more things change, the more they stay the same.
Flacco may have to carry the entire team on his shoulders for the next decade and a half, just like Ray Ray used to do. Heck, we may even get a superbowl out of it. but it will still be fristrating to think what could have been if only the Ravens were good on both sides of the ball instead of just one at a time.

Better Pass rush would help. Time for Kruger to get his chance.
