Oher says flap with Allen was 'misunderstanding'
Rookie tackle Michael Oher's war of words with Vikings pass rusher Jared Allen apparently is over. After saying, among other things, "There is really nothing really special about [Allen]" after Sunday's game, Oher took the high road today and opted not to escalate the affair.
"It was a misunderstanding," Oher said. "Jared Allen, he's a great player. I respect that guy. Been watching him for years. ... We just had an emotional game."
When presented with Oher's postgame comments on Jay Glazer's "After Party" show on FOXSports.com, Allen offered this up: “Well that’s just some idiot trying to talk himself up. I beat that dude like a red-headed step child, let’s be honest. If he was so good why did they have to chip me all day? Ask him that."
Oher had a difficult first half, when he was flagged for two false starts. Allen finished the game with seven tackles, one sack, four tackles for losses and two quarterback hurries.
Oher played much better in the second half.
"I think I did all right, but you always can do better," he said.

Comments
Allen is a character and loves to spot light. He's a great player, but a character to say the least. The Ravens and their fans love Oher because he's an obvious talent, but Allen needs to remember this guy is a rookie, not a 5 year veteran, and the way he handled himself against a potential defensive MVP and Pro-Bowler is astounding and incredibly encouraging for this franchise. I'm very impressed especially by Oher's ability to up his game after a poor first half. He responded, and deserves to take that spot from Gaither. Let Gaither handle the second string DEs and Oher the #1s. I think that would improve our O-line greatly

from Gregg Easterbrook at ESPN:
"In addition to coming down to the final snap, the Baltimore at Minnesota contest was fascinating in tactical terms, both for smart tactics and tactical errors. It was smart to run "underneath" the Vikings' Jared Allen. A defensive end who always plays for sacks, as Allen does, can take himself out of a rushing play by sprinting up the field and then being pushed farther up the field by the offensive tackle. That's what rookie left tackle Michael Oher did to Allen on Ray Rice's 33-yard touchdown run, which put Baltimore ahead 31-30 with 3:44 remaining: Allen sprinted up the field, Oher pushed him the way Allen wanted to go, then when Allen realized the play was planned to go "underneath" to the very spot he just vacated, Allen simply came to a halt and watched, making no attempt to chase. Chris Chester of Baltimore had an excellent pull block in the hole Allen vacated. Rice's earlier 22-yard touchdown came on the same action against Allen -- who did not adjust, and just kept sprinting up the field hoping to pad his sack stats."
Jared Allen. Overrated.
Michael Oher. 2nd NFL start at LT.
Thank You.

I've always said that Allen was way overrated , Oher manhandled him during the entire game with an exception of a few plays , the rookie absolutely schooled the veteran .....

Maybe I just missed it, but I didn't see a lot of chipping.

From the same organization that brought you the "mighty" Chris Hovan...ladies and gentlemen, Jared Allen...

Oher had a good game for a rookie but Allen handled him pretty well. I will say one thing for Allen, on the sack he was unblocked and could have annihilated Flacco, but instead he looked like he took it easy on Flacco. I thought that was pretty classy.

33-31....i would have to say that Allen won the battle and will be playing in the playoffs while Oher and the ravens make vacation plans...Allen is a star and Oher will be one soon with those long arms and great footwork.

People watched the play where McGahee chipped him into Flacco, right?
The announcers even said that Oher had him well in hand until the back tried to help and made things worse.

Allen won. What's with Kelly? A little more time, perhaps. I hope Ray stays in debt so he keeps playing. That Ga. nightmare must have really cost him.

wow you guys sound like liberals.....all making outrageous statements with absolutely not proof.....Allen overrated the guy led the league in sacks 2 years ago and last year had 15 and a half (while being known as a dominant pass rusher). Now this year he has 7.5 after only 6 games good enough for 2nd in the league and has also a couple forced fumbles and touchdown....boy he is soo overrated. Talk about your Glenn Beck's arguing with idiots...how do you win the argument? FACTS..EVIDENCE...REASON!
Posted by: Cody | October 21, 2009 4:50 PM
Ummm..Cody, your shot at liberals not withstanding...YES Allen, is VERY good, that's a given. 2 years ago, he was unknown, and un game planned for, and he had a great year...he also plays beside two guys that are dominant inside so he can't be consistently double teamed...quarterbacks can't step up because their guards are busy getting annihilated by the Williams boys...and this year he has 7.5 sacks after six games..but 4 of those came IN ONE GAME against Green Bay, and the 5th came when he was unblocked. And as the touchdown runs to his side prove, playing defensive end is about more than just sacks. You have to watch and UNDERSTAND the game. Not just statistics. This ain't baseball. WATCH, OBSERVE, AND UNDERSTAND!!!

NFL Sack Leaders through Week 6:
1. Dumervil Den
2. Odom Cin
So much for facts.
Posted by: Other Dan | October 21, 2009 6:27 PM
Oh my bad so he is third, and before Monday night, which was the last time I had checked, he was tied for second b/c that was before Drumvil got a couple sacks. I do watch and observe and understand football. So what if he had 4.5 sacks against one team...Odom,2nd in sacks, had 6 against one team. Think about it this way say he only gets 1 sack against Green Bay he would still have 4 sacks in 6 games which translates to more than 10 for the season which is well above average....the fact is that great players take advantage of great opportunities and that is exactly what Allen did. Dumervil, Odom, Ware, Mario Williams, they don't just get 1 sack for 16 straight games...almost all Pash rushers who have big years with 15 or 16 sacks have a game or two where they had 3 or 4 sacks. In fact it is usually those who have the ability to take advantages of circumstances that separate themselves from mediocrity to greatness. If Adrian Peterson runs for 200 yards on a horrible run defense does that mean he is overrated and not a great player. No it means he is Adrian Peterson and he is the best running back in the NFL and for that game he was a victim of circumstance. How many defensive ends have the Vikings went through with the Williams Wall in tact who couldn't tally up even 10 sacks combined, and Allen comes in and gets 22 sacks in just 22 games for the Vikings.(More evidence of being a victim of circumstance while playing with pro bowl defensive lineman..but again he takes advantage of it) Not only that but his last year in Kansas City he had 15.5 sacks in 14 games, and in his prior 3 seasons had a total of 27.5 sacks, so don't tell me he wasn't already a great pass rusher before having 15.5 sacks his last year with them, while not playing with any other Pro Bowl defensive lineman. On top of all of this he also played for a top 10 defense that ranked number 1 against the run despite not having Pat Williams their best run stopper the final 2 games of the season in which they play Atlanta and NYG who at the time were the top 2 run offenses....yet they managed to remain number 1, this should make it clear that Jared Allen can do much more than just pass rush. How's that for Watching Observing and Understanding.

JA is a veteran defensive end. Michael Oher is a rookie playing left tackle for only the second time in his career. The fact that there is even conversation speaks to how good Michael Oher really is. The one sack that JA had was on a play where Oher had him block Flacco steps up, JA breaks off his upfield move and tackles Flacco for a half yard loss. M Oher made some mistakes but considering his inexperience he did a heck of a job. If they ever meet again I think Oher will go for the shut out!!

Allen got one sack. That was a designed screen play where Flacco held the ball too long. That's not on Oher.
Michael Oher man-handled Jarred Allen, physically dominated him. Not bad for a rook. In a year or two people around the league are gonna be like : Jonathan Who? This kid is that good!
I love his attitude. He is like a mad bull out there. Can't wait to see him shut Freeney down.
