Newsome won't rule out making a trade
General manager Ozzie Newsome wouldn’t rule out the Ravens making a trade before Tuesday’s 4 p.m. NFL deadline.
“I’ve had any number of conversations with any number of teams,” Newsome told the Baltimore Sun on Monday afternoon. “At this point, it can go either way.”
Over the weekend, the Ravens were linked to three wide receivers: Kansas City’s Dwayne Bowe, New England’s Joey Galloway and Buffalo’s Terrell Owens.
“I didn’t hear any rumors,” Ravens wide receiver Derrick Mason said after Sunday’s 33-31 loss at Minnesota. “I’ve been in this game long enough to know that unless it’s a credible source you don’t pay any attention to it. I didn’t hear anything about it.”
In the team’s 14-year history, the Ravens have never made a trade days before the deadline.

Well its time to change history and make a move. We need to get a shutdown corner.

Trade the house for Cribbs.

Agree, it seems we have a vulnerable secondary .An infusion of new blood via a trade could do nothing but help ...hopefully

“I’ve had any number of conversations with any number of teams...” & "At this point, it can go either way."
Is this the coverage we crave?
I get the whole cards-close-to-the-chest thing, but do us a favor Oz and be real. Just say something like, "...you know it wouldn't be at all reasonable for me to divulge anything regarding trade conversations at this time."
I say this all very tongue-in-cheek and I've got nothing against blogs, but a blog really is the only place this non-information flies.
One thing I would like to know is the reason(s) behind us not even considering bringing back Chris McAllister. I know he was deep in Harbaugh's doghouse. Did he go "Sprewell" on him? Did he throw teammates under the bus? Why are the actual reason(s) the best kept secret in sports? In fact, the actual reasons are as well kept a secret as Frank Walker's liabilities in pass coverage are a poorly kept one.

How about McGahee for a shutdown corner??? With the rise of Rice and the need for a quality RB by several teams, there's gotta be something out there....
Posted by: Dale | October 19, 2009 2:35 PM
We won't do anything.
Posted by: Shane | October 19, 2009 2:37 PM
I think for the short term,we should make a move for Ronde Barber and take our chances with the receivers we got!
Posted by: Keith | October 19, 2009 2:38 PM
Ace,
The fact that no one else has picked up McAllister leads me to believe the knee is a bigger problem than a lot of people are willing to believe. I doubt he's a shutdown corner anymore.

Same old Ozzie nonsense. The ravens will stand pat. We have to live with what we have period. Sit Landry for Nakamura, Get Bannan in for Gregg more. Put Webb in the nickle package. Cover the back end and get more pressure on the front end.

One day until the trade deadline, and it is clear that for Baltimore the lack of a star-caliber CB represents the difference between a team that would be clearly the best in the league and one that is 3-3 and facing an uphill struggle for the playoffs. Ozzie- make a deal NOW to get the CB this team needs, don't waste this opportunity when one move could secure this team's spot in the Super Bowl.
I've even gone ahead and done the legwork. Out of the top 20 CBs in the league- these are the ones that are likely unavailable due to playing on a team with playoff aspirations:
Champ Bailey (Broncos)
Asante Samuel (Eagles)
Nate Clements (49ers)
Darrelle Revis (Jets)
Antonio Cromartie (Chargers)
Antoine Winfield (Vikings)
Rashean Mathis (Jaguars)
Marcus Trufant (Seahawks)
Terrence Newman (Cowboys)
Dunta Robinson (Texans)
Charles Woodson (Packers)
Leigh Bodden (Patriots)
Kelvin Hayden (Colts)
Bryant McFadden (Cardinals)
Al Harris (Packers)
Dominique Rogers-Cromartie (Cardinals)
That amounts to 16 of the best CBs presumed to be off the market. Which leaves a clear set of CBs for Newsome and his team to focus their energies on:
1) Nmamdi Asomugha (Raiders): this would be an extremely difficult trade to pull off, as Asomugha is the NFL's best and is just entering his prime. He was just locked up for three years, but the contract is extremely pricey ($29m guaranteed in years 1 and 2, and if Oakland wants to keep him in year 3 he gets the average of the top 5 QUARTERBACK salaries). At any rate, the Raiders are 2-4 and at least two years away from putting a good team on the field, so the contract amounts to a waste of money when they should be rebuilding. Al Davis should at least hear out an offer including numerous draft picks, possibly involving a cheetah or roadrunner. Asomugha would make the Ravens the best team in the league, so that has to be worth something.
2) Cortland Finnegan (Titans): Suffering from a nagging hamstring injury, but could have potential if Newsome believes he'll come back strong.
3) DeAngelo Hall (Redskins): With the Redskins tanking Hall could possibly be picked up in exchange for young players and/or picks. With 3 INTs on the year, he is as promised- a solid turnover producer but weak on tackling and run support. I think the Ravens could work with that.
4) Eric Wright (Browns): Unlikely to gain a young player on the rise from a division rival, but worth mentioning. With Mangini aggressively remaking the team, he may just listen.
There you go- one all-pro and three with question marks accompanying their significant strengths. Regardless, the addition of any one of these to the Ravens secondary would be a clear improvement. It would immediately shift Foxworth to the #2 CB slot, where he is better suited, put Washington on the bench, and get Frank Walker off the team for good- which alone would be worth the cost of the trade (and possibly Carr too, with the impending return of Rolle and rise of Webb). It would also allow the Ravens to attack more at the line of scrimmage, cover for Landry's weakness after a disappointing start of the year, and dramatically improve the Raven's turnover ability (imagine a ball hawk on both sides of the field! Teams would no longer be able to throw away from Reed).
Ozzie- every trade can happen for the right price, and this one would be invaluable to the Ravens chances this year and next. MAKE THIS TRADE!!

We dont need a wide reciever!!!! We need a good cornerback or two!!!!
Posted by: Chris DuVall | October 19, 2009 3:16 PM
I don't see the need for a receiver, if we can't beat a team with 31 points or hold a lead late in a game then we need help on defense. A good cover corner is what we need because so far our d-backs have been garbage and I really don't see any indications of any of them turning it around. Either we can't stay with big receivers or we do and they make a play over our small CBs anyway. Make a play for Asomugha from Oakland. With a decent secondary, we would've been 6-0. With an atrocious secondary we are 3-3 with a schedule full of QBs and big receivers that can shred our secondary. Trade what you need to trade to get a good CB in here now!!!!
Posted by: Ben | October 19, 2009 3:17 PM
They gotta make some kind of move. Bowe is the only WR you said that I would go for. Only thing is, we already have tons of WRs. We need a SHUT DOWN corner bad, not someone with potential. we tried that this offseason.
Posted by: Joe | October 19, 2009 3:29 PM
Is Ronde Barber a realistic target? If so he's all we need on the season.
Posted by: danger | October 19, 2009 3:30 PM
T.O.? Oh, no!!!!! Now, Bowe would be a welcome addition. Flacco is making "chicken salad" out of the chicken "stuff" he has to work with, so a big time receiver would provide a much need weapon. However, if Mattison doesn't change his philosophy and schemes that so far are putting more pressure on our secondary than opposing QB's, it won't matter much how many points we score on offense.....
Posted by: Jerry B | October 19, 2009 3:32 PM
It's time to get Al Davis on the phone and see what it will take to get Nnamdi Asomugha, I would trade every pick in next years draft. We have to do something to fix these secondary issues.
Posted by: Kyle | October 19, 2009 3:36 PM
I think we can survive at WR and if Galloway gets released that'd be a nice pickup who could play the number 4 or if DWill can step up that would be a great addition as well, but when Deion Sanders says that your secondary is etrocious, it is time to make a move because they are strapped down to Foxworth who IMO could be a solid number 2 and Fabian Washington who did worst than horrific yesterday. Landry as well looks like a lost squirrel trying to find an acorn in the tundra, it's tme for a shutdown young corner that can take over and lead us this season while they put Webb in at nickel along withWashington
Posted by: Cletus Johnson | October 19, 2009 3:38 PM
Mike, is Frank Walkers stuff still in his locker?
Posted by: doug | October 19, 2009 3:52 PM
Out of those receivers I'd like to see Bowe the most. I hope we look to acquire some secondary help too tho.
Posted by: the artist formerly known as mike | October 19, 2009 3:56 PM
News flash: there are no shut-down corners available for trade. Nor are there any remotely reasonable trade alternatives for the secondary.
Remember the last time we signed a "marquee" corner? Foxworth. He's the best we've got, but he's no ProBowler.
We're going to have to live with what we've got and hope for the best.
Making a trade now won't make a huge difference this year, but it could damage us long-term because we'll be giving away draft picks in a panic. I say relax, enjoy the bye, and maybe give some of the younger guys some reps.
Posted by: Homeskillet | October 19, 2009 4:01 PM
How many times in the 14 year history has the trade deadline fallen at the beginning of our bye week? We have an immediate need and the timing feels right.
We have a few valuable trade pieces, one of our young linebackers or one of our backup defensive ends for some help at corner?
Posted by: Curt | October 19, 2009 4:01 PM
As much as I disliked Corey Ivy, the way this secondary is playing, I am considering (tongue in cheek) to bring him back. :-D
Posted by: P.R. Ed | October 19, 2009 4:01 PM
It's not just the secondary. No one can cover receivers for as long as we are giving the q-backs. There is no rush and tackling is bad. For every risky chance that turns into a great play by Ed Reed, there are 5 that go bad (ie. pass from Favre to Rice on last drive - Reed caught looking into backfield). There is poor gap discipline with Suggs trying to make a play instead of doing his job. Gregg obviously came back to quickly from surgery. I think they can straighten some things out getting back to fundamentally sound defensive play.
Posted by: Gary | October 19, 2009 4:03 PM
Don't worry about WR! Our secondary is horrid even with the greatest free safety of all time. That is ridiculous! We had a solid pass defense just last year... but Washington and Foxworth have proven nothing except for they can get lit up. If we don't trade for some help at cornerback Ozzie is nuts!
Posted by: Brian Morrison | October 19, 2009 4:05 PM
I bet the second we trade McGahee rice will get hurt.
Posted by: Michael | October 19, 2009 4:13 PM
Ravens really need a shut down corner. Receivers are decent, Mason is great - another one would be gravy.
Posted by: steve | October 19, 2009 4:18 PM
Anyone ever hear that cheer "BE AGGRESSIVE..B-E AGGRESSIVE!" Let the defensive players make the calls if you are going to make the calls like that. Second, when your running backs end the 1st Qtr with a combined 12 whopping yards, get a clue and do not come back out the 2nd half and continue to try to run the ball. Come 'on guys. Our team is extremely talented. Make the right play calls. Pass the ball when you cannot run. Let Ray and Sizzle call the plays on defense if you are scared! I back our team 100%! Oh yeah...and Ed...stay back and help out your wideouts. You could have had some big Pick 6's this week if you would have held your position! I love you all, but at 43 years old you are giving me a heart attack!
Posted by: Raven31 | October 19, 2009 4:22 PM
PS... The Ravens are Warriors! WE remain...Play Like a Raven!! Harbaugh... keep up the good work. OHER...you looked great against the best in the league! We are proud to have you as a Raven. You are awesome and Baltimore stands behind you. We have been in every game and NE was stolen from us! WE are on a 2 game loosing streak! Come out of the bye week like a banchie swinging....This is our year! We have the talent now just make the right calls!! If you are only running 12 yards the first half...go to throwing the ball more...simple as that! Denver here we come!!
Posted by: Raven31 | October 19, 2009 4:29 PM
Flacco - you are the man we have been waiting for. You are our Johnny U! You have what it takes to do the job and no one in the country doubts that!! GO JOE!
Posted by: Raven31 | October 19, 2009 4:31 PM
It would be nice to trade for that corner from Oakland (can't pronounce his name). I'd be willing to give up a 1st rounder from next year's draft to get a shutdown corner and I'm sure Oakland would love to have more draft picks.

Can T.O. play CB??
Posted by: michael whiteford | October 19, 2009 4:39 PM
Everyone needs to stop asking for a trade in the middle of a season. It's half a season too late and millions of dollars short. If they make a move now, it will look like a knee jerk reaction. Go with what you have. Nobody right now could make this team better coming from the outside. If it will get better, it will have to come from the group of men they already have.
Mattison should have a hard look at himself in the mirror and show us what he is made of. Nobody would have expected him to be as good as Rex, but please show us you can do better than the 26 defense against the pass. He has turned the proudest defense of the decade into one of the softest in the NFL. Shameful!
Posted by: Purple Koolaid | October 19, 2009 4:42 PM
Ozzie-get Victor Harris from Philly!!!! He plays like the Ravens used to on defense
Posted by: firedbillick | October 19, 2009 4:52 PM
Are Bruce Laird or Bobby Boyd available?
Posted by: Fridley Wallheimer | October 19, 2009 5:00 PM
What about a trade for Texans CB Dunta Robinson? He has been angry at the GM for franchising him and he is recovering from an ACL injury, but he represents an upgrade over our starters. He is a bigger hitter, more aggressive, and a tenacious tackler. The only downside is that he will need a new contract and will likely want to be paid, most likely on the same scale, if not more, than Foxworth.
Posted by: Greg | October 19, 2009 5:47 PM
I hear Nmandi is out... Al Davis just upped his contract to ARod status. 10 years 300 mil. He is getting 50 million up front in the form of postdated year 2031 checks and the Oakland Athletics starting lineup to be housekeepers.

Bring Adam "Pacman" Jones in..he hits hard..not afraid to go after the ball..will Punish receivers...bring C-Mac back ..

Baltimore held a funeral in effigy for E.A.Poe. What have we done for Lenore lately. I would imagine she is more than slightly ticked off and the entire Raven team is under her curse. In two weeks, there has to be some Lenore T-shirts around the stadium. Remember, hell hath no fury.....

OK, we can address a deep threat receiver during the off-season (offense is getting it done) – which will come sooner rather than later if we do not address this porous secondary. I agree McGahee should bring some excellent trade opportunities but who do you trade for? Which teams - in need of a running back - has a corner worth trading for?

what i don't get is who got the roster spot we saved by letting stover go? walker, carr?
also, what a huge disappointment landry has been. i thought he would be a big contributor this year. he looks completely lost out there. maybe he could be a straight cover guy.
Posted by: ed | October 19, 2009 9:57 PM
If Carlos Rogers despises Dan Snyder like I assume he does, would he be worth a look? The Redskins need to be ripped apart and built up again, why not ask for Rogers for a 2nd or 3rd round pick?
Posted by: Marcus | October 19, 2009 10:35 PM
I might be wrong, but I think the reason the Ravens will keep Willis Mac is based on the salary cap situation.
Posted by: specialg7master | October 19, 2009 11:04 PM
WHY DID WE RESIGN ROLLE? Was it to allow him to get medical attention from the medical staff? He has been hurt since he arrived.

Ok here is my trade list:
1/ BRANDOOOON FloWERS!!!!
2/carlos rodger or deangelo hall
3/Dunta Robinson
4/Nmamdi Asomugha

WE DON'T NEED A WIDE RECEIVER, WE NEED HELP IN THE SECONDARY, TO STOP THE BIG PLAYS THAT ARE KILLING US...IF WE CAN SCORE 30+ POINTS A GAME, WE DON'T NEED T.O. WE NEED A STOPPED DEFENSIVE BACK, SOME OF THOSE GUYS LOOK LOST OUT THERE AND NEED HELP. OUR RECEIVERS ARE DOING A FINE JOB....PICK A YOUNG ONE UP IN THE DRAFT, NOT 35 YEAR OLD
T.O.....

Fire Mattison. We didn't hesitate to give Fassel the axe a few years back.
MATTISON HAS BEEN WORSE. HE HAS DONE NOTHING.
The dropoff in performance in one offseason, after only 3 starters are different?
It's on Mattison. Steve Biscotti, PLEASE listen to the fans. We are wasting an amazing season from Joe and Ray Rice out there because Mattison is clueless.
FIRE MATTISON.

People who want DeAngelo Hall are nuts. Skins fans are moaning about his complete inability to tackle. A couple games ago he was run over by aging and immobile Kerry Collins on a critical play. A classic Al Davis-Dan Snyder over-hyped acquisition. Why surrender something of value to get more of what you already have?
Carlos Rogers - OK in coverage, but hands of complete stone. Might be an improvement.

@Andrew nice list, hope that Ozzie will make sth happen till the deadline
Posted by: Andreas, Graz | October 20, 2009 11:29 AM
I wouldn't be surprised if all the WR talk is just misdirection by Ozzie. The real needs here are pretty obvious: a real #1 corner, and somebody to actually call plays on defense so QBs don't get so damned comfy.
Posted by: Ben N | October 20, 2009 12:08 PM
Noooooo....what we NEED is a new D-Coordinator. HELLO???? All this talent didn't suddenly go south. We need to sit a few people for sure...but we can't even get a whiff of the QB on a blitz? Huh?
Posted by: Vince | October 20, 2009 12:13 PM
The way the game is played today. An elite team needs to have 2-3 RBs. We can't let McGahee go until someone very promising comes along. Especially not during the season
Posted by: dspedden | October 20, 2009 2:09 PM
As much as the Ravens need 2 corners and a safety, the team has to put the focus on trading for a proven WR. The team is terrible at picking WRs in the draft. The DE,
(2)CB, S, & TE will have to wait for the draft.
