Ravens might re-sign fullback Lorenzo Neal
The Ravens waived rookie fullback Jason Cook earlier today, and this could lead to them re-signing veteran fullback Lorenzo Neal. With the departure of Cook, the Ravens have only one fullback on their roster, Le'Ron McClain.
Neal, who played for the Ravens last season, would be a good addition for the Ravens because he can still play at a high level, and is a great leader in the locker room. According to a team source, both Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron have recently spoken to Neal recently about returning. Unfortunately for the Ravens, so has Jets head coach Rex Ryan.
Neal played a major part in the success of McClain last season. McClain reported to training camp overweight, but he worked hard getting his weight down by working with Neal. Ravens Pro Bowl middle linebacker Ray Lewis has also been lobbying some of the coaches about getting Neal back. Neal recently was cut by the Raiders simply because Oakland wanted to have younger players at the position. Neal appears to be in good shape, and has dropped down to 240 pounds. He was one of the lead blockers in the Ravens short yardage offense last season.

I'll vote for bringing Neal back. You always want guys with his kind of toughness on your team. He can still block and despite the pre-season fireworks, I think the Ravens will run most of the time. I like McClain, but Neal is the badass we need for short yardage situations.

Never should have let him go in the first place.

I was disappointed when we didn't bring him back for another season, so I hope that there is no bad blood between Neal and the front office. He's a high-level and a high-character guy, and we could definitely use him on our team.
Plus it's so fun to see him blow up linebackers as he busts through the line!

I like the idea of bringing Neal back. He's a big reason for our running game success last year. Matt Lawrence will clear waivers and we can stash him on our practice squad along with Jason Cook.

I like Lorenzo, and I agree that he brings some intangibles to the table. But unless his weight loss equates to us converting him to a TE (I'm kidding), I'm not really sure we need him. We have Ngata (and maybe Edgar Jones) to pair with McClain for short yardage...Heck, we can use Oniel Cousins--just tape his hands together so he can't be called for a holding penalty on the one-yard line...OK, maybe not.

Well, Ray Ray has already proven his worth as Assistant General Manager by campaigning for Corey Fuller and Deion Sanders, and look how great that worked out. So if he wants Lorenzo Neal, who are we to disagree?

As soon as he was cut from the Raiders, it seemed a natural conclusion to me that he'd be considered back here. Surprised that hadn't been speculated before now.

Why re-sign Neal when you had Jason Cook...great kid and a great player

Neal is a nice addition and will be a team player. What is the problem Jason Cook and how do you create a TRULY flexible double head halfback out of a 270 pound running back?

This is a "MIGHT"? Well coach, what do they decide to do with only 1 FULLBACK that professes to be a full time RUNNING BACK? somewhere in this situation is a unanswerable response.

Would he really choose the Jets over the Ravens?! The Ravens give him a much better opportunity to win now. I guess the backfield is a bit more crowded but he has ties to Cameron who brought him here in the first place.
You have a TRULY flexible double headed back field with Neal because he's a situational type player. You can have any one of our running backs behind McClain and bring Neal in for the Jumbo package with McClain as tailback. I'd call that flexible.

I don't start paying lots of attention until about a week before the real season starts so I was shocked to see we let Neal go in the first place. This is a no brainer! How many guys in the league are willing to and can block like this guy? It's like having a tank clear the way for the running backs. Don't let Rex Ryan steal him!

I liked having Neal, but we kept 5 RBs on the Season roster. You know that we'll be grabbing another veteran WR . Not many NFL teams start the regular Season with only four WRs. This tells me that they seem to be confident with McClain at FB and that Willis may end up getting alot of the Goal line touches.

Those of you excited about the possible return of Lorenzo Neal probably also would like to see Matt Stover back. Unfortunately, there's no place for sentiment in football. It's a young man's game and sometimes you need to move forward. By the way, Charles, I don't think Matt Lawrence would clear waivers. If you waive him for a one-dimensional player like Neal, you're losing depth both at RB (where injuries are almost a certainty) and on special teams. I'm not saying Lorenzo Neal couldn't help, but I'd like to see what direction the offense is going before using a roster spot on a 40-year old fullback.

Why not consider using one of the reserve defensive linebackers (who are likely to get little playing time) as the lead blocker; someone like Burgess, Ayanbadejo, or Barnes. They all have the weight, size, and toughness to take on the opposition. The age element is favorable as well.

I completely object to this posting. Mr. Preston is implying that the Raiders actually have a strategy. Please correct this.

I'm glad to get Neal back. He has a strong work ethic and really brings some nastiness to the offense. He knows Cameron's offense from last year and his time in San Diego. He will be a great addition to the team and provide invaluable veteran leadership, something we need on the offensive side of the ball.

The new catch phrase is "play like a Raven ". Well , .... that's what Lorenzo Neal does . Sign him .

I am beginning to seriously dislike the Jets and Rex. It seems every player out their we seem to have any interest in Rex and the Jets try to swoop in and take them. First they got us into a bidding war with Scott, then they are flirting with Denver for Marshall, and now Neal too? I am beginning to wonder if Rex can think for himself. After all he did take 7 ex-Ravens with him to New York.

Jason Cook looked good...he seems to have alot of talent and potential...Lorenzo Neal certainly has a wealth of experience, toughness and savy as a blocking full back...tough choice...I would definetly keep Jason Cook on the practice squad...even with the very talented Leron Mclean in the starting full back role....Cook seems very proficent as a blocker runner and receiver....a hard nosed full back with good hands....valuable.

He not only makes the running game better, he provides additional protection for the QB. Of the sacks the Ravens allowed last year, Cameron mentioned about 1/3 of them were attributed to TEs and RBs. Investing in Neal is like investing in each of the backs individually and collectively.

I think Neal will be a great asset to our team, look at last year with the Ravens and dont forget about the year LT had his record breaking season. It was all because of Neal, ever since he left what has LT done? NOTHING... Bring him back and we improve jour chances of going deep into the playoffs.
