Practice notes
Tight end L.J. Smith was the only Ravens player who did not appear to fully participate in practice this afternoon. Smith, who has been hampered by a pulled left hamstring since Aug. 24, ran on his own on an adjacent practice field at the team's training facility in Owings Mills, but he did not take part in team drills with fellow tight ends Todd Heap and Edgar Jones.
The picture was much better for wide receiver Mark Clayton (strained left hamstring), guard Marshal Yanda (surgically-repaired right knee), offensive tackle Oniel Cousins (twisted right ankle) and rookie linebacker Dannell Ellerbe (sprained right medial collateral ligament) -- all of whom took part in practice.
Clayton reassumed his starter's job alongside Derrick Mason.
Wide receiver Marcus Smith, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on Aug. 13, underwent surgery Tuesday to repair the ligament. He hopes to return by next season. (Tip of the hat to my colleague Ken Murray for that information.)

Why exactly did we sign this guy? He hasn't shown us anything in the preseason. But in Ozzie i trust

Ozzie's plan is for Heap and Smith to be hurt on alternating weeks, therefore the Ravens will always have one available.

Thanks for the info Ed, it sounds like the team is getting healthy at the right time... Sorry you have to work with Mike Preston, though. He is just the worst.

I agree with you Michael, L.J. Smith is probably the worst football hire in Baltimore since Mike Preston. Haha

I guess it doesn't matter as much now but I think you shoudl stop calling these camp/practice notes and call them the injury report. 90+% of what's reported here is related to injury.
I am drawn to this blog for insight into who's running crisp routes, who's making the big plays, is Joe Cool accurate in his passing, how Buddy Lee's legs are holding up...
Not that injuries aren't important, but I'd like someone to cover more substance of practice.
