K.J. Gerard sports a new look

Lardarius Webb and Dannell Ellerbe are two of several Ravens players who sport dreadlocks. Well, the club lost a member when safety K.J. Gerard lopped off his dreadlocks after Monday night’s game against the New York Jets.

Gerard, who now has a close-shaven head, said he and several teammates at Northern Arizona had dreadlocks, but after school, they began to trim their tresses.

"I had been thinking about it for a couple months now," Gerard said. "I was just ready for a change. It was a college thing."

Gerard said he likes the new look, but it has taken some adjustment.

"It feels different. Trips me out sometimes because I’ll look in a mirror and it surprises me," he said. "Today when we were doing the walkthrough and the sun was hitting the back of my neck, it was burning a little bit."

Gerard has an uphill climb to make the team with Haruki Nakamura and Tom Zbikowski backing up Ed Reed and Dawan Landry and Derrick Martin capable of playing both safety and cornerback.

"We’ve got a lot of good safeties," Gerard acknowledged. "Since you don’t really get too many opportunities, you’ve got to get the most out of what you get. When you get a chance, you’ve got to make the most out of it."
