Signing Drew Bennett can't hurt

Sure, everyone wanted the Ravens to sign a higher-profile free agent like Marvin Harrison or make a trade. And sure, Drew Bennett had one more catch than I did last year.

But signing Bennett can only help out a questionable receiving group. There is no risk -- the Ravens just signed him to a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum ($745,000).

Plus, adding Bennett could have an upside. The 6-foot-5 veteran brings much-needed size and has the potential to be a deep threat. Joe Flacco has the accuracy downfield to be one of the top 5 big-play passers in the NFL. It was only three years ago when Bennett was averaging 16 yards a catch.

So, let's see how this plays out in the preseason.

Here's a statement from Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome:

“At this time of year, it’s good to be able to pick up a player who has been very productive in the league, and that includes against our defense. Drew has been very competitive against us. We obviously liked his workout today. We wanted to make sure he was healthy and that he still had the things we’ve seen against us and on film.

“Drew’s situation is a lot like L.J. Smith, who we added earlier this offseason. Both are proven veterans coming off injuries, and they are looking for the opportunity to resurrect their careers.”

I like the idea of having a big receiver that can catch the ball. If he does not hurt his foot again he may be ok. Flacco can wing him the ball down field.

Signing Dre can only be a plus, undrafted players like him I like, you know he a hard worker and if his is healthly the then I know whe have a solid receiver. But as long as we don't have a true number one WR then we will never know how got the group can be that's why I think that we need to just give up next year number one pick and get Boldin from AZ even if he only get 80 rec. 1200-1400 yards and 6-10 TDs you can't tell me that that's not worth a first round pick and you this is the NFL a contract can get done if need be all we have to do is cut that bust of a RB Mcgahee why are we holding on to him what has he ever done in the pros???. With all the double teams that Boldin will get then I know the rest of our receiver can make play when they are 1 on 1. A first round pick is not a sure thing and your going to spend around the same money with a trade now you get a player that at the least will give you 3-4good year now and with the way next yours draft is looking and where we might be picking there nothing that could help up for the next 2-3 year.

I am so sick of hearing about a true number one wideout!!! You don't have to have a number one wideout to win a superbowl (see the past few superbowls won by NE or Tampa Bay). Do we still need to upgrade the position, of course. In my opinion however, you can't sign everyone and you have to make Ngata a priority next year. Even if he is franchised, that's a lot of cash. I say patience, and now that we have a number one QB, let's see how things go drafting good players over time. It's not about winning a superbowl, it's about winning superbowls.

Initially, to be honest, I'm not impressed. From a technical point of view I understand the move, a vetern receiver with success in the past, but I just feel the team is reaching. I love Clayton and whatever happens or whomever is here, not here, retired or whatever, I believe #89 is on the cusp of greatness. I want to see Marcus Smith develop and D-Will play healthy. I thnk we have some talented guys AND I think Mason will be back!

Like him or not, Mcgahee can't be cut because it would kill our cap with accelerated signing bonus. Cutting mcgahee would make it IMPOSSIBLE to sign someone to a big contract, not facilitate it.

Also, unless you pick in the top 5-10, a first round pick is NOT the same money you would pay to a a traded WR who wants a big-time contract. The draft pick is much more affordable. You get the first rounder for about 5 years 10-18m total. Signing a guy like Boldin would cost 9-10m per year for 5 years.

We love ex-Titans. That Jeff Fisher must be a great coach.

Hopefully Derrick Mason will want to become his teammate again.

We're collecting WRs in much the same way as The Eagles. Harbaugh must be quite familiar with this, which is why there is no panic. Is Mark Clayton our version of Freddie Mitchell only a lot better?

I live in St. Louis. I go to the occasional Rams game.

Drew Bennett S-U-C-K-S. I've seen more than enough of him to draw that conclusion. I've heard more than enough about him on local sports talk radio to know that he was public enemy #3 or #4 (yes, we had that many public enemies on the Rams).

Not a fan, even for depth. Wrong guy.

You're right, signing Drew Bennett can't hurt, but does anyone else find it the least bit strange that he'll probably be the No. 1 receiver assuming that Mason stays retired? Good god, that's atrocious. We thought Mason and Clayton had problems getting open against Pittsburgh? I can only imagine what happens when Bennett and Clayton go out on pass routes against Pittsburgh. 8-9 men in the box. Six pressuring Flacco. Very effective single coverage on both receivers. Scary proposition.

Go get Amani Toomer. The Ravens need more depth, even if Mason were to return...

I'd like to defend Willis McGahee, who is constantly getting bashed in here. I think too many people are being too tough on him.

I think he is midunderstood. He is clearly not a clubhouse cancer and his off-field behavior here has never a problem, so far as I know. His issue is that he tends toward lazyness. He needs to be self-motivated.

But when he is, he is quite a good running back. Being on John Harbaugh's s-list is not easy for a player and very difficult to get off of, but despite his presence on it, he still contributed 844 overall yards, almost 700 of them rushing, along with a healthy seven touchdowns. And he accomplished this in a three-man RB rotation in which he was the third man.

If he bombs out this year, he will get a permanently poor rep and likely wind up as a journeyman on someone's bench. And he certainly must know this. Look for Willis to have a very good season, assuming he is given the chance.

You heard it here first,

You get what you pay for.

I just want ot say to everyone who is making these profound statements about the receiving core, remember last year complaints. The Offensive Line was in questions and those guys shocked everyone. Let it play out and then complain. I don't knoe about you but I am tired of on paper champion looking teams. This is a very stuctured organization. This is why this team went so far into the palyoffs last year. This team will be fine and better than last year. Remember were not at every practice and we don't know what Joe has developed with the guys he has. Again let it play out and then make all the complaints because I would hate some to have to change they stance on the team because they are successful this year. Also, this bolds well for the ravens, just when teams thank the Ravens have a weekness the team (ravens) blows them out because on paper the ravens have big holes at receiver (at least thats what they other team is thanking). This is a good team and that's what this organization wants to give us for a long time. Be patient Everyone that's why they get paid what they do and you what you do. Chill!

Actually it could hurt in the sense that he is a short term solution to a long term issue....this means less reps for Marcus Smith and Justin speed of frankenstien Harper...Matt Willis caught everything they threw at him and they cut him ?...regardless of temperamental issues they could have Signed Owens and been a serious superbowl contender...instead they held a grudge and took the holier than thou road....having no idea that their only decent receiver Mason would be gone before the season started.... so live with your wide receiver deficiencies and accept your fate as division runner ups again ...and Flacco has certainly not done anything that would indicate he is one of the top 5 passers in the league in terms of down field accuracy, where did you get that from.....Film not Hype.[see titan playoff game where Mason had to wait for touchdown pass to barely beat trailing corner.]...[and Pass to Clayton so badly underthrown that both defenders fell to ground trying to slow down.]he threw 3 accurate deep balls last year... Clevland Clayton Diving catch. Cincinatti Clayton one hand catch. Figurs against the Texans... how does that translate into one of the league's top 5 deep passers.Willams had the whole side of the field open against the Raiders and still had to stop and wait for the touchdown pass...stop with the Tim Couch, Alex Smith. Rob Johnson, Rick Mirer,Rex Grossman, Kyle Boller hype......wait until the guy really does something significant... 16.7 quarterback rating AFC championship game/ looked lost and pathetic only meaningfull pass stare down interception to Palamolau.... thats what sticks out in my mind....Give me a top ranked [#4] defense the number 4 running game and Cam Cameron and I think I could win a few games myself.

More right price than right player, but the best bet of the four from that tryout. Another veteran into the mix of what will ultimately be WR by committee. I'm still hoping Mason comes back, who will make any combo of the committee better. Guys are gonna go down w/ injuries ( even Bennett might again). He adds height, savvy and another veteran warm body. But not impact, . If he could get 35 catches for 500 yds. in say 13 games he'd win this year's Jim Leonhard Award. Ya never know. It's what we can do for now, especially until Mason is sorted out. The top shelf WRs in play have too many downsides like age ( Harrison), "issues" ( Plax & Marshall) or price (Boldin & everybody).

I'm not giving up on Mason. man i love that guy. He's still a maybe and until he files the papers I'm counting him in.

Anyway I think people are way off the mark. Yes we think we finally have the QB problem solved, didn't we think that with Mc Nair?? I'm whaco for Flaco but; I want to see him get through season 2, smarter and better before I go talking super bowl smack.

We have a young offense lets let them develop - I'm looking in my crystal ball and I just don't see a super bowl in there. Good solid Raven team yes, 2 years from any super bowl IMHO.

The question really isn't does it hurt to have signed Bennett, the question is: does it help, and if so, how much? In retrospect, it might have made more sense for the Ravens, after having signed Oher in the first round of the draft, to have made a more concerted effort to go get Robiskie. Yeah, Kruger is a nice addition; but Robiskie might have mitigated the need to now operate out of panic mode. The last time that happened to the Ravens, they ended up with McGahee. At least they didn't give up much for Bennett, but whether that helps them or not remains to be seen. I don't think, however, that Bennett is going to end up being the bang for the buck bargain that Jim Leonhard was last year. The way this offseason has gone so far, I think only the purplest homer would say that the Ravens have closed the gap between them and the Steelers.

Oh and people should calm down and stop drinking the Raven media koolaid. Harbaugh has NOT proven himself either. He stepped in and grabbed an all ready very, very good football team.

As far as I'm concerned the jury won't be in on him until at least end of season 2011 again JMHO.

Or Maybe it can hurt... Hurt him... now that he has retired, are the Ravens responsible for his Salary this year?

Well I just heard he retired. I knew I wasn't initially impressed for a reason! Please can we stop reaching for has beens, what ifs, perhaps and who? Stick with and develop what we have at WR.

GO RAVENS!

Well...considering he just retired...I guess it's back to the drawing board. Amani Toomer would appear to be the most reasonable choice.

Actually I guess it can hurt huh? Two days and retires? What an embarrassment!

Jamison you have to comment on the latest development... Drew retires? Incredible!

Yep, can't hurt. Of course now that he's retired, can't help either. At some point this season (when the Ravens replay the Frank Sanders, Justin Armour, Ron Johnson, Marcus Nash, Javin Hunter, Devard Darling and James Roe experiments) the phrase "In Ozzie We Trust" will be used to mock the front office's inability to field a decent offense.
