Is Joe Horn on Ravens radar?
Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome has spoken to the agent for wide receiver Joe Horn and told him that the team would contact him after Friday's tryouts.
Horn, 37, is a four-time Pro Bowl receiver who averaged 87.4 catches from 2000 to 2004. He made 27 receptions for 243 yards and one touchdown in 12 games in 2007 before sitting out 2008.
The Ravens have a connection with Horn. Quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson was the Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator in 2007, when Horn was a receiver there.
"The Ravens are one of the teams that would definitely interest Joe," said Ralph Vitolo, Horn's agent.
The Ravens are conducting tryouts on Friday with four wide receivers, a group that includes Drew Bennett and D.J. Hackett.

Why not dig up Frank Sanders why he's at it? I don't think Kyle Boller would've made it here anyway, but I sure hope Ozzie gives Joe Flacco some better weapons than the scrubs he's had fill the WR position for the past 10+ years. I don't think we've had 2 top-notch receivers on the field at the same time since Derrick Alexander and Michael Jackson.

Have we signed Oehr or Kruger Yet? Will they get it done before camp?
I think our top two picks have not signed yet! Need Oehr to get all the reps possible.

Why does the team have zero interest in Matt Jones?

Michael Jackson? You mean he's still alive? I'll alert the media.

COMPLETELY agree with Bernie; Joe FREAKING Horn? Who's next? Justin Armour? Good GAWD man!

If Mason stays retired? I say put the kids out there , whom you have drafted.
Out of last season's top 10 performing WRs, only Fitzgerald, Boldin, Steve Smith (CAR) and Roddy White were in the Playoffs.
Would Boldin or Marshall be a wonderful addition? Sure !
At what price?
I would really like to see what a healthy Demetrius Williams could add and see less blocking from the TE position. They can't catch any balls if they are always chipping or blocking.
Mason's leadership would definitely be missed.

For a long time Ozzie appeared to think the o-line was not important - finally getting some good players. Now WR seems to be the same way. 10 years ago Horn would have been a good pickup. I can't believe a young proven pro like Marshall can be had and Ozzie doesn't appear to be interested. Poor Joe.

Bernie,
Can you name me the 2 top-notch receivers Tom Brady had when they were winning those Super Bowls? Moss and Welker weren't there then.

We also had a crappy team when we had Alexander and Jackson. Now we don't. Ozzie must be doing something right

Amani Toomer?

Is Joe Horn on the Ravens radar? Does Joe Horn still have a pulse is a more appropriate question. This just HAS to be some sort of joke, right Mike?
Posted by: JB | July 22, 2009 10:33 PM
Joe Horn was washed up two to three years ago, i would rather have Marcus Smith lining up then him!
Posted by: Steve McFarland | July 22, 2009 10:43 PM
Bernie, you are indeed true...that offense back then scored often and early. If there was any confidence in the guys we already have, Joe Horn wouldn't be talked about...bring him in and give 'em a shot Ozzie!

Matt Jones

Oh please, say it isn't so.

Why are we playing around with these receivers he will not add anything to our play. None of those "four" receivers will. Trade your picks because if you dont your 1st round will be the last 10 picks of the 1st round anywat. Get Marshall he wont be a distraction!!!

This is rediculous. You finally solve one problem and found a good QB. But he has no weapons. I'm so tired of seeing the same offense. Without a top flight WR we will never see Flacco's true potential. Sick of the 5 yard dump off to the RB and watching opposing CB's sit on short routes. We'll never get past the Steelers until we can do something a little more dynamic on the offensive side of the ball. You mean to tell me Ozzie is going to run Williams and Clayton out there the first game? That's not fair to Flacco. He needs to do better than Joe Horn.

Oh good, more wide receiver talk....wait, I mean ZZZZZZZZ.
Posted by: Lineman | July 23, 2009 9:34 AM
There is too much continuity w/ this team. They are good, but not good enough year after year. Things need to be shaken up here & there to keep people on their toes. Make a big trade...go fer' it.

I bet Chris Armstrong, of Baltimore Stallions fame, probably has a few more games in him as well.

I have to agree with Bernie on this one. We've never drafted a legitimate big play wide out and now we're still scraping the bottom of the barrel for hope. Let's get it in gear Ozzie and give Joe Flaaco the receiver's his arm and talents deserves.

The Ravens had better get serious about addressing the glaring need with a dramatic signing, and quick. Don't think for one minute that the rest of the league isn't watching this.
The sad fact is that we will not beat Pittburgh without a true downfield threat. The lack of urgency that the team is showing right now is alarming. We won't have the competitive team that we have now forever.
DO SOMETHING!!!

let's just trade a few draft picks for boldin and go to the superbowl already. it's not as if the ravens have ever had success in drafting a wide receiver anyway.
Posted by: johndiggity | July 23, 2009 1:32 PM
Sometimes the Ravens are slow out of the gate. For example, this year the Patroits beat us to Joey Galloway. With his speed and experence he would have been great to spread defenses.

1. In all likelihood, this is just something being flotated by Horn's agent. (at least I hope that's the case)
2. Putting Horn aside, and even assuming that Mason will return before the start of the season, there remains a serious need to beef up the WR group. Do they even have enough wideouts to put a spread offense on the field? If not, they're going to fall short once again. A good team is just not good enough to go very far in the post season.

Ozzie knows what he is doing. We will be fine. All you guys keep picking on our recievers. Has Moss won a superbowl. NO!Anqain Boldin. NO! Marshall NO!
One reciever can't win a superbowl. "Pittsburg" must be doing something right without a so called top reciever.

If the Ravens are going to think about signing 37-yr-old Joe Horn, why don't the Orioles think about bringing back 45-yr-old SAM Horn? Then we can look forward to a clever ad campaign from Horn & Horn Restaurant. Isn't it mostly old folks at those smorgasbords?
Posted by: TomM | July 23, 2009 7:42 PM
Mason is my favorite Raven but the Ravens have to move on. The classless way that he announced the retirement right before camp is inexcusible. Bennett will do fine, move on.

kudos to TomM I laughed out loud after reading your post

I'm so sick of the Ravens and their timidness. I see holes open up on other good teams and they do whatever it takes to fill those holes. Those are the teams that make it deep into the playoffs. We finally have a great team assembled - One that can make a legitimate run for the Super Bowl (almost made it there last year). But we have one big, glaring hole at WR. We need that big, fast, "go to" guy to spread out opposing defenses - put them on their heels. Spend the money, doll out the draft picks (which we should have already done before now) and get the best receiver available. PSL ownwers, like myself, deserve no less. We are tired of paying big money for mediocrity.

if the horn rumors are true, you cannot deny the need for a veteran who would come on board, not be counted on for extensive field production, and be a strong stabilizing teacher for the lesser-experienced ravens core.
we WANT mason for 2 or 3 more years, but you have to have some kind of fall back that doesn't destroy the franchise. i can all but guarantee that a wide out will be picked in the low 1st or 2nd round of the next draft unless somebody big leaves

Venkmann, you're right. Moss and Welker didn't win a Super Bowl ... which is about the only thing they have in common with Mark Clayton and Demetrius Williams. But seriously, your point is ridiculous. Naming every Super Bowl-winning team with a deficiency at a position and/or naming every non-Super Bowl winning team with stars at a certain position doesn't change the fact that the Ravens passing offense has consistently ranked in the bottom of the league. Last year WITH Derrick Mason we were 28th; what the hell are we going to be without him or an adequate replacement?
Posted by: Bernie | July 24, 2009 4:05 PM
Caution: Optimistic, Out-on-the-limb forecast -- Ozzie could put two obese penguins and a gimpy walrus on the field at WR this year and the Ravens would have production. This is because for the first time since Vinnie's Pro Bowl year the Ravens are going to have a QB and scheme that will combine for offensive stardom. The WR's will succeed as a byproduct of the talent of Flacco, his O-line, and the coaching. Maybe next year Oz will get a WR that will raise the talent of the rest of the offense -- but it ain't happening this year.

Enough recruiting at the NFL's geriatric ward! The time is now. Trade next years 1st & 3rd round pick's, and go get Anquan Boldin from the Cardinals.
Size, Hands, Speed, Toughness.
He's a warrior, and forget the age B.S. A strong heart and a desire to be the go to guy goes a long way.
Posted by: Johnny O. | July 26, 2009 9:05 PM
What is the fascination with going to get these old-washed up WR's that are prone to injury. Can we not dig up these old talents and develop NEW talent!? I would rather stick with what we have and give that our best shot. Put some pressure on Flacco to push the issue with the WR's we have. Take ownership and pride. I hope we don't sign anymore 1-yr vets. It's like Baltimore is a retirement city or something. At least it used to be for the O's...we don't want the Ravens to be that way!!!!!

Trade everything! Get me Anquan Baldin!

im the number 1 saints fan. and while he may be up in age when we had joe horn he was a top five reciver in the league. flacco is a better qb then aaron brooks ever was.I know u probably wouldn't get but a couple of yearsout of him but I think he would surprise u. he like randy cotoure old but in better shape than some of these 25 year olds.don't know if he will get signed or not but if he does I guarantee he will be ur #1 reciever!! he's still got it the only reson he's not srill with atlanta is because he tore a groing muscle and they got impatient
