Ravens sign fifth-rounder Phillips, two cut
The Ravens signed their third draft pick, linebacker Jason Phillips, to a three-year contract. No terms were available for the fifth-round pick.
Phillips joins tight end Davon Drew and running back Cedric Peerman as signed draft picks.
The Ravens cut defensive back Anwar Phillips and cornerback David Jones.

Anwar Phillips is going to go somewhere and be a starter, mark my words. He has shown flashes of potential, but when he finally puts it all together, he has the talent to be the man!
Good luck, Anwar!

Am I mistaken, or have I been hearing the Ravens rave about Phillips for a while now? Was he simply a victim of numbers since the Ravens signed so many DBs? Or was his potential not as high as advertised? Just curious.

Wow, I just read Edward Lee's earlier post where Anwar Phillips said he considered staying home from Tuesday's practice but he decided to show up. Edward also reported that Phillips got a generous number of reps that day. I guess he would have been better off staying home.

Hey Dewey and Mike - I think Ozzie knows what he is doing. Do you mean they'll go on to be starters like Gary Baxter, Duane Starks, Ed Hartwell and Adalius Thomas (who, by the way, was just marginal last year)

As a TCU grad and a Ravens fan, I think its great that the No. 2 defense in the NFL should have a member of the No. 2 defense in the NCAA. I think he'll be great if he gets a chance.

If they cut Phillips again they better not sign Derrick Martin to another year or Evan Oglesby. Those guys prove that they cant cover time and time again.

Not sure about this move, from all reports he was impressive in camp, makes you wonder what might have happened behind the scenes that we don't know about. That staying home comment got me wondering.

Cut Phillips but keep a bunch of reject cornerbacks from other teams? I don't get it?

Once Again a move that makes no sense....Derrick Martin and Evan Ogelsby are so inferior.... and should have gone with David Pittman....Phillips shows speed, instinct and strength [something all their corners lack] and he gets cut.....another Ozzie Gem......when all these bigger stronger receivers are pushing the Ravens fast but small corners around remember this decision....let go of Priest Holmes wasted 25 millon on premium offensive line Grbac...signed Mcgahee for a ton of money for the same production as Jamal Lewis.....Hired Billick on the strength of what Randy Moss and Randall Cunningham achieved..... allowed Billick to bet the future on Bowler...let Derrick Anderson go while retaining Correy Fuller?.....

Rob,
You can hate on the Ravens all you want with the lowpoints and negatives over so many years, but any strong fan of the Ravens can document the strong moves as well over that time period. Now, I do not reside in Baltimore, but I followed Mr. Modell when he brought the team there. I see Boller as really the only costly move/mistake over the last five years; I too get upset over the Anderson mistake. However, I see the Ravens on a roll after we got rid of Billick. Providing Joe Flacco does not have a sophomore slump, we will be in the playoffs again. We were closer to winning the AFC Championship last year than most think, and we had a rookie coach and quarterback.

My take on Oz is that when he hits with a guy he HITS with a guy...when he misses, he MISSES. He is usually a good judge of draft talent, but he is terrible at managing under the cap. The big messes he's made have been paying people too much, like McGahee, Lewis (yes I said that), Pryce, Boller, etc, and NOT signing people to longer deals when they are young, as the Steelers do for example. Anyway...aside from the Billick nightmare, it's easy to feel good about where this team is going now...just need the receiver!!!!
