Newsome eventually wants to return to Alabama

Ozzie Newsome will likely determine when his run as Ravens general manager ends.

When it does, Newsome is looking to return to Alabama, where he grew up and played college football.

“At some point I’m coming back home," Newsome told the Tuscaloosa News during his ninth annual golf tournament there. "I’m coming home. And what I do when I get here, I don’t know. But I am coming home."

There has been speculation for years that Newsome would go back to become Alabama's athletic director. The Crimson Tide's current athletic director Mal Moore has come under scrutiny lately, which has caused some to wonder about Newsome's return.

"I always allow the information to help me make a decision,” Newsome said when asked about the athletic director job. “There is a lot of information that I would need to get before I could even entertain something like that.

"I probably get asked that question once a day. I always say, ‘I know the NFL. That's what I do.' "

Newsome, 53, is considered one of the top decision-makers in the NFL. He has been in charge of the Ravens' personnel moves since the team relocated to Baltimore in 1996 and was officially named general manager in 2002, becoming the first African-American to receive that title in the NFL.

We need Ozzie for at least 10 more years.

i'd be sorry to lose Oz, but no doubt about it, the Tide could sure use him as AD

Here's hoping the Ravens can keep Ozzie on in a consulting role when he leaves for 'bama. He's the best in the business, and we are extremely fortunate to have him!

It would be nice to have Newsome around for at least another 5 years to make picks. According to ESPN, the Ravens have been the 5 most successful franchise of the decade. What's most surprising about this amount of success is that they did it without a QB. Almost impossible. Now that the Ravens have a legitimate QB, they could lose Newsome to 'Bama sometime soon.

Ozzie, please just give us five more years! You have a QB now. Great things could happen.

Roll Tide!! Your the man Ozzie and we want you back!

I was lucky enough to be at the team hotel after the Super Bowl win. The small lobby around the elevator was crowded with very happy players and fans. Oziie was standing on the second or third step of a stairway in the area. I'll never forget him saying to my now deceased friend, Michael, also Ozzie's friend, over and over, "we are the WORLD champions." It was a magical moment, one I would love to see hapen again.

There are so many people critical to and resposible for the consistent sucess of the ravens over the past 10 years. Of all of these, Ozzie is without a doubt the most critical. And he had never lost his basic kindness and qualitity as a gentleman. Seeing himm before a game in Pittsburgh, he could not have been nicer to my then 10 year old son despite having other things on his mind.

I hope Ozzie Newsome stays with the Ravens for many happy years. He is a terrific GM and a wonderful man

Please don't go Ozzie! As a Raven Fanatic and a Tennessee grad, losing him to 'Bama would be a double blow to me. I have not doubt he'd be a terrific AD.

The Raven's without the Wizzard. Say it isn't so.

Most of you were calling for his head a little over a year ago. And if the Ravens miss the playoffs this year most of you will call for his head again.

Ideally the Ravens win the Super Bowl this year or next then Ozzie can go home. If that doesn't happen then, if Ozzie were smart, he should take the Alabama job whenever he can.

When you look at other teams around the league you certainly have to give Mr.Newsome his props as as one of the league's top GM's.....among all the great picks and decision's there were a few key ones that created a tantalizingly close but not so much more successfull scenario[ Billick, Priest Holmes, Boller, Grbac,etc.]....for all the blue chip picks and the leagues most consistently dominate defense for the past decade they got 1 superbowl champioship....to me that feels like squandering a great poker hand. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to talk with Franco Harris today....I told him I hated him and Mel Blount for ruining my childhood...he smiled...I asked him his opinion of the AFC north this season and what he thought of Joe Flacco....he said he believed that the Ravens were the 2'nd best team in the league but they have the misfortune of being in the same division as the steelers....He compared the scenario to the steelers and Oilers when he played which was kind of surprising to me becacuse I thought he would say the Raiders ...but I guess he was referring to division rival...surprisingly he said that he though the Ravens were the better team last season and he couldnt believe that the steelers were able to defeat the Ravens 3 times....I agreed...remembering that the Ravens dominated the first 2 games and had the Steeler fans booing their team at halftime of the first game. Most impressive to me was when he agreed with me that if the Ravens had deffered the ball in the overtime period of the first game that they would have had a much better chance of winning the game because as he said in that scenario he would much rather put the game in the hands of either defense.... my sentiments exactly...why put the ball in the opponenets scoring range when they probably couldn't do it themselves... especially considering Flacco was a rookie quarterback, first nationally televised game, pinned deep in the opponents scoring territory... he did go on to say he didnt think any coach would actually defer the ball in that situation. He also said he thinks Joe Flacco will be fine and will develop into a very good quarterback....I told him I wasn't as sure because of Flacco's inability to process information at NFL game speed so far. Franco seem's like a really nice /very down to earth guy and i enjoyed talking with him.

Ozz certainly has the right to go back to Bama if/when he wishes. But I hope he chooses to stay for quite a while. We have seen a number of his second-in-command guys leave here for GM jobs elsewhere, with mixed results.

Here's hoping that, whatever happens, Ozz and Biscotti are sitting down in private to talk about grooming a successor -- if that hasn't already happened.

And I predict that, at Alabama, Ozz will enjoy success similar to that of another Maryland football legend who went there... Bear Bryant.

Ozzie, Momma's calling

I doubt Oz will retire from the ravens in the next 3 to 5 years. I really hope he can attack 1 more Superbowl before so at least.

That Sabin character doesn't exactly seem like an "Ozzie" guy to me. He's a little to much of a self promoter and not enough of the team mentality type that's promoted so effectively here in B-more. My guess is Ozzie remains doing what he know's best at least until Coach (I use the term loosely) Sabin wears out his welcome.

As a Baltimore-born Ravens fan and an Auburn student, I hope this report never comes true.

Not only would the Ravens suffer from losing one of the best GMs in the game, but Bama would get another leg up on my already depleted Auburn Tigers.
