Brandon Marshall speaks ... sort of
In his first comments since requesting a trade from the Denver Broncos, Pro Bowl wide receiver Brandon Marshall wrote on his Web site:
"Clearing the Air…"
"To whom it may concern. Life is filled with change, and where I am in my life now change is probably best. It’s hard leaving an organization ran by one of the best owners in all of sports, and someone who’s been there for me through my ups and downs. The hardest thing was hearing Mr. B (owner Pat Bowlen) wish me luck in the future, but we both came to the conclusion that this is probably the best thing for me to grow on and off the field.
"I thank the Denver fans who embraced my emotion and play on the field and showing me love every time I step outside my door."
Ravens officials are looking into Marshall's background before initiating any trade talks with the Broncos.

get him... . new city, fresh start. I actually like him more than Boldin (Boldin is hurt too much)
get him as long as he isn't facing suspension, the guy is a baller. he gets open and catches everything.
what do they lose in the draft? what other holes do they have? they obviously need a WR (check), eventually D-Line/end help, but they have depth at RB, CB saftey, a freakin' linebacking FACTORY, burn the picks, our 3rd rounders never pan out anyway.
I'll give up the 32nd and 96th picks of the draft for a SUPER BOWL RING! Then trade back a few and acquire more picks.

agreed 1000%

yOUR RIGHT burn the picks. with Marshall [25] will be there in january
Posted by: walt | June 16, 2009 10:58 PM
3rd rounders never pan out?? Maybe you're speaking a bit fast homie!! Zbikowski and Gooden will have breakout seasons this year. Forgot about Marshal Yanda?? Even Musa Smith was a great player. So not all of our 3rd rounders were busts!! I'm definitely down with Marshall and I think he is worth more than a 1st rounder!!
Posted by: Ali Vali | June 16, 2009 11:01 PM
He young enough to give the ravens good 5-10 years which is worth a first rounder. Try to dump either Heap or Willis Mcgahee in the deal. But Pay Suggs before anyone else he deserves it.
Posted by: Frozenrock | June 17, 2009 12:16 AM
I actually do not like this at all given his off the field trouble and possible suspensions. obviously, a solid wr and deep threat, but character wise not what the ravens need. And regarding the comment on Boldin being hurt too much, I'm not sure what shamrock was watching last season but the guy had his JAW BROKEN on a brutal hit and was playing like two or three weeks, which i thought should a ton of courage. t
Posted by: Anonymous | June 17, 2009 12:35 AM
Is he a good teammate? Does he practice hard? Is he liked and respected in the locker room? Is he the kind of guy you want to go to battle with? Does he show up to play for each and every game?
These questions I care about. I couldn't care less if he beats up his girlfriend. Let me take that back. I care if it is going to effect him showing up to play( ie: is Roger going to suspend him?)
When did all this crap start about "quality guys", and "character men" I want "football players" and "warriors".
Couldn't care less what they do off the field.

Brandon Marshall is without a doubt someone who could make the Ravens better. However I believe coach Harbaugh is going in the right direction with his stand on player off field background. This could be a risky move based on Marshall's legal history, which includes charges ranging from domestic violence to driving under the influence to retail theft. Marshall faces a trial later this summer on two misdemeanor battery charges stemming from an altercation with his former girlfriend and is likely to draw a suspension. I am concerned he will probably wind up in the same cell as Matt Jones and Plexico. We have been known as the Raiders of the east long enough. Most people I speak with outside Baltimore think we are a bunch of thugs. Biscotti and Harbaugh are trying to change that.
Posted by: Ravensaway | June 17, 2009 7:20 AM
Marshall? All those off the field issues? Are you kidding me? Avoid this guy like the plague. I would rather take a chance on Boldin.
Posted by: ron | June 17, 2009 8:11 AM
Ali Vali,
Lets be realistic here. Did you just use the words "great" and "Musa Smith" in the same sentence??? His CAREER rushing totals are: 132 carries for 496 yards in 5 seasons(less then 100 yards a season). While I agree that Gooden may very well have a breakout year. Yanda could be good, but he's started 17 games in 2 seasons so lets not enshrine him in Canton just yet. Furthermore, as much as I like Zib, with the current makeup of the roster, he's only the 4th safety(behind Reed, Landry and Nakamura) To summarize, we don't have a great history with 3rd rounders and we should definitely give up a 3rd and a 1st for a Top 5 pro bowl WR.

Ok this trade is really simple...
1. Get BMarsh and become a superbowl-bound team...BMARSH gives us the deep threat and will take double coverage most of the time to open up field for other receivers and RBs...
2. Do not get BMarsh, attempt to win with sub-par receivers (besides Mason, but he's fragile now) and hope Oher is the missing piece that'll be good for an extra 2-3 seconds for Flacco to find an open receiver...
FORGET ABOUT SUGGS AND NGATA....
THEY WILL BE SIGNED...
Ngata will be franchised next year and Suggs will receive the big contract when we dump McGahee or Heap...
GET THIS DEAL DONE OZZIE!!! BMarsh makes our sub-par receivers sooo much better because he'll take the focus off most of them and double coverage on BMarsh gives the Ravens so many more options on the field...
I KNOW MY PITT FREINDS ARE PRAYING THIS DEAL DOESN'T HAPPEN....
When you're talking about a back-to-back 1000+ yds season with only three years experience...well correct me if I'm wrong but that sounds like an elite NFL receiver...the likes of which we have never seen in purple & black...BMarsh will put the fear in the defense we need so they can't stack the box...
This is a no brainer in my mind...
We've never had a season in which all receivers remained healthy...time to get some insurance in case a guy like Mason goes down...
ALSO! Forget the incidents off the field...I have no doubt Ray Lewis would keep BMarsh in check...where BMarsh was "the guy" along with Cutler in Denver, well in BMore, RAY RAY runs the show and owns that locker room...you think he'd put up with a cancer-like player? Not a chance, he'll whip him into a team player instantly...
Furthermore!!! He hasn't had an incident since march 2008...almost a year...seems like he learned his lesson....he's not a cat for pete's sake...also, to be fair, I've dealt with crazy girls in the past and his wife seems to be off the deep-end...the incident stems from her trying to blackmail him into giving her money...go figure...

I say go get him we need him That all we are missing please get him
Posted by: Krtprod | June 17, 2009 9:05 AM
He's not the prize that we might want. He's also injury prone, last off-season because of rough-housing with his brother and crashing through the glass front of an entertainment center (and said he "slipped on a McDonald's bag") and right now he's rehabbing a hip injury and no one knows how healthy he will be. He's also got a court date in August on domestic battery charges from an ex-girlfriend and the league has stated that they may take further action on Marshall pending the outcome of that case. Oh, and he's second in the NFL in dropped passes, right behind Braylon Edwards.
Posted by: jerry | June 17, 2009 9:20 AM
Look I am a diehard Ravens as everyone else on here but I am sick of hearing this player has issues and that player has issues. If the Ravens are going to make it the Super Bowl Ozzie has to get this deal done and get Marshall to the castle. As it stands right now all the great receivers have some kind of issues or they are head cases Moss, Boldin, T.O. AND SO ON.
It is time for Ozzie to pull the string on one of these WR AND GET THE DEAL DONE !!
Posted by: jorjad52 | June 17, 2009 9:29 AM
If there is one team in the league that can get Brandon Marshall to straighten up his act off the field, it's the Ravens. John Harbaugh, Ray Lewis, and Cam Cameron would be perfect mentors for him. In my opinion, Marshall, as he said on his blog, needs a change a scenery. As long as there is no suspension, give up the picks for him. I can only imagine what his presence on the field would do for Joe Flacco and for the running-game. The Ravens will have a solid offensive line this year. If you've got Flacco under center, Ray Rice, Willis McGahee, and Le'Ron McClain splitting carries in the backfield, and Marshall and Derrick Mason running routes with the Todd Heap, L.J. Smith tandom at tight-end, you've got a formidable offense. We all know what the defense can do. Let's make a deal Ozzie!
Posted by: Jake | June 17, 2009 10:06 AM
if we do this i hope we can keep our players and just give them picks, and with flacco and brandon marshall they can be one of the best Qb, Wr tandems in the nfl in a couple years
Posted by: Jordan | June 17, 2009 10:08 AM
I'm sick of hearing how this guy has to much off-field baggage. I mean look at Ray Lewis, Samari Rolle, and even Jamal Lewis. Despite off the field issues, these guys all gave us several good years of play. Sure, trading for Marshall may be a risk, but wasn't taking an unproven QB from a small school in the first round a risk too? Now I'm not saying we go out and trade an arm and leg for the guy, but given his position with the Broncos staff right now, and a possible suspension pending, I wouldn't be surprised if the asking price dropped. To sum it all up, we finally have our franchise QB in Baltimore, we've built a good/young offensive line around him, now just give the guy a damn weapon that can actually scare a defense (and possibly keep teams like the Steelers from stacking the box). I'm not alone in this am I?
Posted by: Curtis C. | June 17, 2009 10:12 AM
Curtis...you are not alone. If BM is suspended by the NFL it would most likly not be for more then 2 games. Drug use is 4, right? 1st and 3rd pick...let's get er done!
Posted by: George Samryk | June 17, 2009 11:21 AM
Curtis C. I completely agree with you 100%. At some point Harbaugh is gonna have to face that difficult challenge of having a head-case player like Marshall on the Ravens. Brandon Marshall is the last remaining piece of the puzzle the ravens need and we cannot pass up this opportunity! If there is any problems, Ray Lewis can straighten him out if he does something stupid, no worries there. Also with Marshall on board, Flacco will immediately have a breakout season with a healthy o-line, good running game and two tight ends.
Change of scenary is always worth the risk, just ask the new england patriots. Randy Moss was back to being the best wide receiver in the NFL and he didn't have any problems in the locker room and off the field. I say bring on Marshall and let our hunt for the Super Bowl begin!!
Posted by: Josh | June 17, 2009 12:12 PM
You guys make me sick. I understand why this country is in such a mess. You would take a woman beater with no regret just to get a half rate human being for a football team -- A FOOTBALL TEAM. How sick. I'm sure all you sicko's would welcome VICK with open arms. Sick, Sick, Sick I'm ashamed to be a Raven fan....
Posted by: grey32 | June 17, 2009 12:15 PM
Trading for Marshall would make the Ravens hypocrites. They preach character, now they're talking about trading for one. We needed a corner back last year, we might as well had traded for Pacman.
Posted by: John Byrd | June 17, 2009 1:15 PM
Apparently , it is not possible to find a top shelf, dominant WR in the 2009 NFL that isn't at least "moody." "Issues" seem to be standard equipment at that position. Marshall's issues as yet don't appear to involve drugs and guns, which puts him ahead of Matt Jones & Plaxico.
And I agree w/ Baller that Ravens team leaders like Ray Lewis, would have a positive impact on almost any NFL headcase, as would the age old remedy called "winning." I worry about his hip as much as his head. The last thing we need now is another breakable WR. Marshall would catch some passes, and every time he lines up, he'd take some heat off the "emerging" WRs that Ozzie & Co. are not standing behind so steadfastly as they did before the draft and mini-camps. The front office is right to be sensitive to the Ravens' bad image league-wide. The unfortunate truth may be that it takes a thug to beat a thug (i.e Hines ward, Harrison, and various other pukes in black & gold).

Pass, too many off field issues. He will be suspended too often.

I hope you don't have a wife / girlfriend / daughter. Is your last name head ?
Posted by: For the Horde | June 17, 2009 1:21 PM
Are you kidding me? None of you love the Ravens and football more than me, but when did it ever become ok to hit women? Oh, if she was crazy or provoked him that is ok? He is a trained athlete. Big, tall, and cut physically. All the better to whip his women in to shape. Right? I guess if OJ was in his prime, we should try to sign him too! Did any of you have parents? Did they not teach you right from wrong?
I want to win too. But the cost advocated by so many posting here is way too high for me (and I am not talking draft picks or contracts). I am stunned. Do none of you have mothers, sisters, daughters, etc.? Is it ok if they are beat if their husbands/boyfriends help the Ravens win. You'll all need to check yourself. Use your head people.
Posted by: Alan V | June 17, 2009 1:22 PM
Has everybody lost their minds? BM is a wacko with the whole screw set fell out and rolled down the drain!.
Take a good career and walk away? Why?
Beat your former and current squeeze and risk your career? Why?
Is he going to get suspended? Very Likely if not now, later for sure!
Dont waste your time and money on this nut bag no matter how good he might be!
Posted by: A Bouldin | June 17, 2009 1:31 PM
I am not saying that it is O.K. to hit a woman. I'm saying in regards to football, if Brandon shows up on game day and is a good teammate, I don't care. How does Brandon's policing of his women affect his job?
And since someone brought up the subject, lets talk about Michael Vick. As a white man I am not quick to throw out the race card but do you think that if good old southern boys like Favre or Manning were caught dog fighting/promoting they would have been prosecuted and sent to Federal prison? Federal prosecution for dog-fighting.
What a load of crap. Did he beat-up his girlfriend? Did he kill someone with his car? No, he killed a few dogs. The dogs probably had a great time fighting while they were alive. For all I know, Mike could have given the dead dogs to a local chinese restuarant.
Have you ever seen how pigs are raised and slaughtered? How about them chickens you see neatly wrapped in the grocery store? Know where that N.Y strip comes from? He killed some animals. Big deal.
Someone decided to make an example of Michael Vick. The punishment was way beyond the crime. He has more than paid his debt to society and is deserving of another opportunity.

DID ANYONE SEE 60 MIN'S LAST WEEK?
NO THANKS MR. MARSHALL !
WE DON'T NEED TO WIN AT THE EXPENSE OF LOSING OUR MORALS, PRINCIPALS, AND ETHICS.
Posted by: hawktime | June 17, 2009 3:45 PM
Yeah, get Marshall just put a clause in his contract saying absolutely NO GIRLFRIENDS.
Posted by: Leroy Bruce | June 17, 2009 3:57 PM
Apparently you people have never heard of change of scenary. People change! And no I don't have a wife and kids yet. I have a mother and an older brother who were able to raise me pretty well when my dad passed away when I was 3 years old. Don't attack people over the internet when they are expressing their opinions. I'm against women abusing just like you guys, but in America people who have gotten in trouble wants a change of scenary and I am one of the few Ravens fans that is willing to give Marshall chance to do that. You people need to stop living in the past and move on because Marshall has said it couple times that he wants to move on after the mess is over with.
Posted by: Josh | June 17, 2009 4:00 PM
There's a difference between being moody, being selfish, being a headcase, and being a batterer of women. The numerous police incidents (documented) with this guy beating up his girlfriend, stabbing her, assaulting her friends etc...This guy is a dirtball. Yes he's a great player. No one doubts that. But if i had a choice of trading a high draft pick for Boldin or Marshall, I'm picking Boldin. Does anyone really think that if marshall is traded he's suddenly going to change his ways? Sounds like another athlete going through his PR campaign. I don't think Harbaugh would want any part of a guy who stabs and beats his gf. And again, these aren't allegations, they are facts.
Posted by: Noah | June 17, 2009 5:40 PM
What does the Ravens' heirarchy think about Marshall's character? Would he be good for the team or become a distraction?
If he passes their 'test's,' he's worth a 2nd-round pick.

BRANDON MARSHALL IS A BUM.
12 arrests in four years. You know what he's good at? Figuring out how much he can get away with, and avoiding jail. I ALMOST like Michael Vick better than this guy, because at least Vick served 23 months behind bars with the hope he can become a better citizen.
BRANDON MARSHALL IS A BUM
He dropped 18 passes last year. Some idiot wrote on this board that he catches everything in sight. What a joke. He excelled in Denver with an offense that threw all the time because their defense was lousy.
BRANDON MARSHALL IS A BUM
He had hip surgery. You have no idea if he will ever play as well as he used to. He blames his drops last year, on the injury to his arm when he put it through a TV set. IF ONLY I COULD BE MAKING THIS UP.
I feel very confident that all of this is simply rumor and nothing more. Harbaugh and Ozzie have too much of a good thing going in this town to bring in THIS BUM. Maybe Ozzie can drive up a bidding war with the Browns just so Georgie K can overpay for him. Go for it Cleveland, you need another headcase to replace Kellen Winslow.
SUPER BOWL RINGS:
Plaxico Burress=1 (and then cut)
Terrell Owens = 0
Randy Moss = 0
Anquan Boldin = 0
Chad Ochocinco= 0

Some of you fans are selfish pigs. Once a abuser always a abuser just ask his new girl. He'll end up in jail or one of the momma boys on the team will put the smack down on him. So much for team unity. Ray and Jamal weren't constantly in trouble with the police like this punk. I dont think he's ever apologized for what he did. But since his girl never pressed charges and it seems no one cares. Buyer beware!!!
Posted by: James | June 17, 2009 9:42 PM
I like pullin for guys like Flacco, Mason, Grubbs, Suggs, Reed and Gregg. I just can't get excited about Marshall, TO, Boldin (remember, he's not happy and they went to the superbowl last year) or Ocho Cinco.
Only TO has a ring and he was the third Wr on that 49rs team.
Let's invest in a training crew that can keep our guys healthy. 17 guys on IR is unacceptable.

I agree with Rick H. I am a woman so don't throw any if I had a wife/girlfriend comments my way.
No one is condoning Brandon's behavior. But if you had an excellent mechanic, would you know or care if he beat his wife? Our armed forces have a huge problem with domestic abuse. Should soldiers not be allowed to kill and protect us because they have temper/anger issues?
I am so tired of hearing that professional athletes are "role models." My children look up to and respect their father. He is a role model. Several of their teachers are role models. Someone who dedicates their life to helping others is a role model.
A professional football player is someone with exceptional athletic skill that may or may not be a decent human being. They are no different than anyone else in society. Most professions do not deny someone the right to do their job because of emotional/behavior issues that occur outside their place of business.
Get Brandon some help and support. Get his butt in Raven uniform.

Musa Smith was no great player. He was definitely a bust.

Hello? What about Plexyglass? I think is the most underrated receiver in the NFL. Get's no respect... but LOTS of TDs!
Posted by: Anonymous | June 18, 2009 9:13 AM
Rick H. - You are a real piece of work. You are willing to rationalize everything for the sake of your benefit (or for the Ravens). I hear your white man's justice argument. But have you ever heard of Rich Man's justice? Does OJ in the death of his ex-wife ring a bell? If you have money, you get away with much more. Period. BM has a decent bank account to help him defend himself with.
Also, add biggotry to you list of vituous writings. We really could have done without the Chinese restaurant comment.
Josh H. - living in the past? These are fairly recent events. By the way, Mark McGuire has asked that you receive a Hall of Fame ballot.

I love these people on here who seem to think that morality is a part of football. A lot of these people talking about what a sleezebag Marshall is have probably been divorced or filed bankruptcy, things that are just as despicable as hitting women. Stop being such hypocrites.
I frankly don't care how many women Marshall beats up if he helps us win. He is a rare talent. I'm not looking to be the guy's neighbor, just watch him on a football field. Baltimore's population will always make it seem like a "thug city", so Marshall is actually a good fit.
Posted by: Luke | June 18, 2009 1:54 PM
Me personally i agree with every one one here. I am a Raven fan for life but I must follow my mind and heart an say everyone desevers a second chance. Sure he may have been a promblem child in the past but I feel once our coach an owner sits down and talk to him I feel that they would feel that why not give him a second chance. And dont worry about gameday if his past off the field issues will affect his game cause it havent in Denver. So just think about it you knw what he brings to the team plus we have real motivating leaders an coaches that can let him knw what kind of frachise we are. So ask ur self Deal or No Deal
