Kelley Washington: No. 3 receiver?

Ravens coach John Harbaugh didn't want to place any label on recently signed Kelley Washington, but he indicated that Washington could fit the role as the third wide receiver and a core special teams player.

The Ravens see some upside in Washington, who has played just 54 games in six seasons.

"One good thing about him is he doesn’t have a lot of wear and tear on his body," Harbaugh said. "He’s kind of a young 29."

Harbaugh then added, "We have some high hopes for Kelley and that’s why he signed him."

Washington would have to beat out Demetrius Williams for the Ravens' third receiver spot.

If Demetrius Williams is healthy enough to be the #3 receiver, I predict he'll vault to #1 or #2 - he is definitely that solid.

If Demetrius is not healthy...well, all those Boldin naysayers should...oh well, you get the message.

Somehow beating out Williams doesn't seem like an impossible task. Washington seems like a good option over the middle & near the end zone. I guess the old saying is true, you can't coach height.

He will beat out Demetrius Williams by default because Williams is as fragile as fine china. I'm trying to see Marcus Smith make a step too...he should be getting a ton of reps since Mason is hurt. Also the speed demon from Duke...I'm calling it now will make the team.. Yamon Figures needs to make his spot as a WR or move on....

let's not worry so much about these guys , we should be worrying more about getting rid of the softest tight end in the business, Heap has another hangnail that is keeping him out again, let's get rid of him and get a real footaball player at tight end!!!

Kelley Washington will be the number 3 receiver by default just as The Guru states but not because Demetrius Williams is "as fragile as china."

ANY Achilles Tendon injury is soooo much more serious than any writer has yet to point out since they started writing about a "lower leg injury" last year. Physical therapy, yeah, sure, it helps (after surgery), however, it takes about two years just to get rid of the limp while you are walking. Wide Receiver position, are you kidding me?!?!?

MAYBE next year Demetrius Williams will have a legitimate shot of getting on the field (and staying) but the odds are against him for this year. Sadly, despite how hard he attempts to recover, he remains at the mercy of the tendon. In fact, too much work can be counter productive too and set him back.

Unlike most other injuries, the tendon, being a tendon, gets little blood circulation and takes forever to heal and rarely will the leg/calf ever reach the point it was prior to the injury. I'd be willing to bet his calf on the injured side is 2/3's the size on the uninjured side.

Just the facts. I wish DW nothing but the best and hope he defies the typical outcome of this most serious of injuries...

# 3 Receiver ???? I'd have to say....He's worthy of a Starter compared to what we have on the roster at this time with injuries and age...not to mention several inadequates. In the past 13 seasons, we have not had a stand out receiver.. known nor feared by any team int the NFL. Our Receivers may be feared by High School Players.... but in the big League....Non-existent !
I say let Washington prove his capabilities, It may surprise us all a little, huh?
Oh Yeah....once again!!~!!!!! Todd Heap is Injured as he has been since we've Drafted him. This guy is a waste of time and money mainly due to his inability to play a full season.
For the moey you get Todd.....YOU ARE A TRUE SISSY by Baltimore Standards. PLease SACK up and stop acting and crying like a BIg BABY or SHIP OUT !!!!!

Demetrius will jump to #1 if he can finally stay healthy

How can you say Williams is "Fragile" He had a SERIOUS injury and came back to early and pushed things too much and was hurt again. D Williams is tough as nails and has had horrible luck!He in my opinion will come back and have a great year and shut all the naysayers up! One thing Williams is NOT is fragile

If we are talking about our 3rd reciever position and not our 1st and 2nd we are in for another season of can't get open, can't beat anyone deep!!!!!!

I'm sorry, but I'm still not sold on the whole "comfortable with the receivers we have" talk. With the young and up-coming Offensive line that has been assembled, the last piece of the puzzle is a breakout wide receiver to compliment Flacco's arm. Now I'm not saying the Front Office should go out and spend ridiculous amounts of money on someone like Boldin or Harrison, but we definitely need someone beside the "possession" receiver we have in Mason. How about Burress? Sure its a risk, but he's a proven wideout that can he acquired without costing an arm and a leg (which could leave some cap room to reach a new well-deserved deal for Suggs). I personally just don't feel any more comfortable picking up some mediocre receiver like Washington. So come on Oz. Its what the fans want, and what the team needs. And you can't tell me that Flacco doesn't walk away from an OTA without thinking.....What if?!

Yamon won't make the team this year, he's fast but is scared and he can't catch and won't block. D.W. showed flashes of brilliance in the games he played and if healthy will be stellar.Mason is a workhorse and its time for Mark Clayton to show or go.Anyone else is a toss-up or special teams player.

A healthy Williams would be a consistant deep threat if he could stay heathty, which dosn't seem likely. He has everything you would want and he'll fight for the football harder than any other wr we have including Mason. Also M. Smith is creating a strong buzz being in with the starters making some nice catches including a one handed grab in traffic for a TD. Washington will have his hands full trying to beat out those guys, but next year Mason or Clayton may not be around so the other wrs need not worry. Just work hard to earn the opprotunity and prove yourself.

It's hard to say about Demetrius because he's never been healthy enough to be on the field for a consistent amount of time. The good thing about the Washington signing is that it creates a solid competition at training camp for the number 3 spot, which hopefully brings out the best in both players.

Washington may make the team, but I don't see him becoming much of a factor this season unless Williams does not heal and Smith doesn't show up.

Our WRs are adequate for the type of offensive game plan being run.

Hey, weren't we being told by the team just prior too, during, and right after the draft that the reason we did not go after a top WR either through free agency or the draft was due to having Williams who is our # 3 WR? Now, Washington could be # 3. What happened to Williams? Will he replace Clayton or Mason or is he injured? Outside of Mason, I still think we are a WR short.

Jeff-

"I guess the old saying is true, you can't coach height."

Ever hear of Clarence Moore?

Steve G & Mike B.

Heap has been a Raven for 8 years. 16 games a year means the Ravens have played 128 games in those 8 years. Heap has played the full 16 games 5 times (including 2005, 2006, 2008), 12 games one year and 6 games in two years (2004, 2007). He has played 104 games and missed 24 or about one and a half seasons worth. He missed those games due to a number of serious injuries caused by Heap's disregard for his own welfare.

Another Raven in that same 8 year period has played 102 games. Some guy named Ray Lewis. And defenders get to hit people, not stand there and take hits. I guess you would call him "soft" too, huh? You two must be very tough.

Heap Haters Please - He is soft - OK Here is his career stats.

Games Played/Started: (2001, 12/6); (2002, 16/16); (2003, 16/16); (2004, 6/6); (2005, 16/16); (2006, 16/16); (2007, 6/6); (2008, 16/16) Totals: 107/98

A 2-time Pro Bowler (2002 and 2003), Heap is an elite athlete with a rare combination of size, speed and soft hands, who has led the Ravens in receptions 3 times in the last 6 years
Named the NFL Alumni TE of the Year and to the USA Today’s All-Joe Team (players who are critical to their team, but don’t receive the Pro Bowl nod) in 2006
Was also a Pro Bowl 1st alternate and named to the NFL.com All-Interview team
Started all 16 games in 2005, and set career highs with 75 receptions for 855 yards and 7 TDs
Heap also set the franchise records for career receptions and career reception yards in 2005
Despite being slowed for most of the season with an ankle injury, Heap finished the 2004 season with 27 receptions for 303 yards and 3 TDs

Earned his 1st Pro Bowl selection in 2002 when he established himself as not only a go-to player for the Ravens, but also as one of the premier TEs in the game

Old- Productive- Not SOFT!

Physically gifted, speedy wide receiver, who can stretch the field with his skills
Has seen action in 25 games, including 9 starts in his young career (missed a good portion of the 2007 season with a high ankle sprain)
Enters 2008 with 42 career receptions for 686 yards (16.3 avg.) with 2 TDs through his first 2 seasons

SOFT - SOFT - SOFT
