Harbaugh on the backup QBs

Ravens coach John Harbaugh revealed an interesting statistic about the team's first minicamp, saying backup quarterbacks Troy Smith and John Beck both had higher completion percentages than Joe Flacco.

"So, that’s competition right there," Harbaugh said. "It’s a little challenge to Joe. Now, they threw more interceptions, too, so that’s a plus on Joe’s side. But they’re all pushing one another and they’re playing well."

Harbaugh seemed pleased by the progress of Smith, who is entering his third season in the NFL.

"Troy’s throwing the ball very well," he said. "He’s come a long way the last year as a passer. He’s an NFL-caliber passer."

Is it just me or is Harbaugh pimping T. Smith for a trade? Hmmm?

"Troy’s throwing the ball very well," he said. "He’s come a long way the last year as a passer. He’s an NFL-caliber passer."

Nooo!!! We need the Suggs package! we need more of it!

"It's a little challenge for Joe. Now, they threw more interceptions, too, so that's a plus on Joe's Side." What's that all about. I think Joe's job is safe but could there be more than meets the eye. I believe in Joe, but I also believe Troy Smith could be molded into a starting NFL QB. Could we have our own version of the "Rivers and Brees" saga, even though Brees had earlier success. Beck also has the experience in CC's offense, but I can't see him being but a solid backup at best. I think somehow they need to see a little more of Troy before they just let him walk. I also believe they need to see consistancey for a couple years before anyone's crowned a Franchise QB.

Higher completion % in Mini camp? I think that's about as relevant a stat as Slugging % in the HR Derby.

There is no competition.

Smith a pro QB? Wake up people- He will never be sucessful directing any NFL team yet alone our Ravens from the pocket. Too small and too erratic to be a consistent threat. He's good for an occasional trick play and hand offs to the RB's. Period.

Troy Smith will start one day in the NFL. And he will become a star, a Drew Brees level star. I am a huge fan of Flacco, but I think Smith, had he remained healthy, would be the starting QB this year after playing a solid and at times spectacular 2008. But obviously that didn't happen, and now we've got our franchise QB and a very solid backup. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get traded next year for a 3rd or 4th rounder. And I wish him all the luck. He's going to be a good one when he gets a true chance to shine.

Harbaugh musthave forgotten that Troy was the assumed starter prior to getting ill and losing so much weight last season. Assuming that he's prepping for a trade- well he's best to keep the Heisman Trophy winner since he know;s the system already.

we are not going to go through this again. Flacco lead us to the AFC Championship game. end of story. Stop trying to make a Qb controversy where there is not one. Enjoy that we have a Qb for years to come and be done with it.

I don't think we know what Beck can do at this level. His only playing experience was on the 3rd worse team in NFL history. 80% of that offense was cut within months of ending the season.

Smith definitely has the upside on running the Suggs Package, but I would give Beck the edge in the throwing game.

so u wont let a post go through if it is not in favor of troy smith?

Nobody's job is beyond competition. Putting aside my blatant alumni bias, the best QB should play. Last season, the best QB did. If Joe doesn't continue his learning curve and he gets passed in terms of his overall performance, he should sit.

All that being the case, on a long enough time line, Flacco will prove to be the best QB on the roster. He's a smart field general, can make all the throws, and his reads have quickened dramatically since his first few games. Remember, the worst thing as a QB you can do is take your offense off the field with a turnover. If it's not there, throw the ball away so you can live to play another down.

Blah Blah Blah Flacco will be the next Boller. Folks want to believe that Flacco got the team to the playoffs, however, you know it was the defense! Keep fooling yourself!

Everyone should remember even though Smith was to be the presumed starter, it appears he got that position by default. I have heard just as many credible rumours that had he not been hurt, Boller would have been the starter.

Smith was about as untested as Flacco was. Now of course, he is far behind Flacco in terms of relevant NFL experience.

Flacco is great but he had a lot of things go right for him last year. Still you can't rule Smith or even Beck out. It looked like Derek Andersen had solved the Brown's long term QB problem and now look at him. I see Smith eventually becoming a starter elsewhere and Beck becoming the next version of a Detmer brother backup QB.

Flacco will not be the starting QB by seasons end.... lucky first yr... troy smith with be there by seasons end...i like flacco but troy smith is my man for the job after seeing what he did in 2008.. too bad he got sick last season...

Everyone forgot the before Flacco got drafted, the whole town was begging for some Troy Smith in their life. I'm a big Flacco fan...but he isn't getting a bronze bust anytime soon. Troy Smith is a good QB.. and his height? He'a actually taller than Drew Brees...and he's a beast too.

How is Troy a "beast"? He's slower than Flacco, a 1/2 foot shorter than Flacco, and hardly more elusive than Flacco.

I like Troy, and think he'll start somewhere, but he's not a "beast". His passing is very good now - a lot better than his rookie year. He'll make a team better when he's at the helm... but really, he's not Flacco - he's his own man.
