Early line on Ravens wide receiver tryouts
In the spirit of the upcoming Preakness, here are the odds on the Ravens signing the veteran wide receivers:
Jerry Porter (4-to-1): It was only last offseason when the Jacksonville Jaguars gave him $10 million guaranteed, so Porter has intriguing talent. If he's motivated and healthy (he had a hamstring surgery in July 2008 and was placed on injured reserve in December with a groin injury), he should look the best of all the receivers in the tryout.
Kelley Washington (7-to-1): He might not make as much of an impact at receiver as D.J. Hackett, but he is favored over him because of his special teams ability. The Ravens could use a tall backup receiver who can contribute on the coverage and return teams.
D.J. Hackett (8-to-1): He's the dark horse to have the best tryout. Hackett has great hands, good size and above-average speed. The knock on him is he's an injury risk.
Tab Perry (15-to-1): The Ravens actually talked to him last year during free agency before he signed with the Miami Dolphins. He's a quality special teams performer but he really wouldn't add much to the Ravens' group of receivers.

My money is on Jerry Porter. I also hope the undrafted Maryland WR makes the Ravens.

Jery Porter is exactly what John Harbaugh has been preaching against and trying to rid the team of. Me-First guys who get paid to get hurt.
Please dont sign Jerry Porter!

Eron riley looks really intriguing; i like his size and speed and he can catch as well.

Just remember, there is a reason why no team drafted him in seven rounds.

Any inkling on what, if any, role Justin Harper will have with the team this year?
-----------------------------
He is still a developmental type of a player. I could see him on the practice squad this year.

Porter is SO overrated. My gut says that DJ Hackett is the one guy who could make an impact, but he just did nothing last year.

Sorry but these guys are all retreads and will not add much to the passing game. I still can't understand why we did'nt give Harrison a look. None of these guys are close to mason, clayton or williams but there may be a spot for one of them to replace Yamon as his days are limited since the kick return duties will be handled by either Webb or the rookie free agent receiver from Duke

i remember a certain player by the name of bart scott getting over look by all teams in 7 rounds, also a qb that didnt get drafted until the 6th round named tom brady... cant really go off the draft for everything

The kid out of Duke has a great deal of potential. I don't like any of these choices, and I want to here the status on Justin Harper. Big play guy with a good attitude.

What happened to Ernie Wheelright? He is big and fast and was not given a chance last year.
-------------------------------
The coaching staff is intrigued by him. Still, Wheelwright is not someone they can count on. He would only be a bonus if he contribuites.

Any chance the WR from Duke makes the cut. He seems like a DHB type player.
------------------------------
My early projection -- without seeing him on the field -- is that he has a chance to make the practice squad. Beyond that, he's a long shot.

Let's not all forget Mr. Zero Catches in Eight Games, Marcus Smith! :-o

I hope Jerry Porter is fully recovered from his injuries. At 6'2" 220 he's the type of reciever we need. Plus I think he will be motivated being a DC native (close to home).

It is a fact that undrafted players can turn out to be stars. It is also a fact that Derrick Mason was not a number one WR his first few years at Tennessee. But he developed into a quality WR there and was worthy of the Ravens picking up a few years back. We know how that turned out.
All of that said, unless Porter has changed his attitude, he isn't the kind of guy I think Harbaugh would want him. Meanwhile, a Hackett or a Washington (or a maybe a rookie free agent) could still develope into a quality pro WR.
---------------------------------
You're right that some do develop. But it's still a risky proposition. The Ravens had targeted Rutgers' Kenny Britt in the first round and Ohio State's Brian Robiskie in the second. It didn't work out because the Ravens either they opted for a higher-rated player (Oher) or they didn't fall to them in that round.

If Newsome thinks he's in good shape with Mason, Clayton and Demetrius Williams?
I'm satisfied. And I'd agree. Williams is the key. He has to stay on the field.
If these guys can stay relatively healthy, they can succeed. They finally have a QB to get them the ball.
I don't see the sense in signing WRs who don't seem to be wanted, by their old teams.
If they were difference makers? Sign them.
I want to see the progression of Eron Riley, the undrafted FA from Duke. He's got the physical tools to be a good one.
Until then, he's just a guy that has potential. Yet, I believe he's a young WR to keep your eyes on.
I think they have the talent, and Flacco will help to bring more of that talent out.

Every team passed on me for 7 rounds and I did OK.

Yeah, you can count on two hands the number of Pro Bowl players that were originally undrafted. There is always that one that falls through the cracks. But if you're banking on an undrafted rookie to help you, then you are truly desperate.

Can anyone tell me why no one has even looked at Marvin Harrison? Does he want to play? Is he injured? Even at his age, wouldn't he be advantageous opposite Mason?
-----------------------------
Harrison wouldn't want to come back to close to the veteran minimum, which is what the Ravens are going to offer these veteran receivers. Plus, the Ravens need a bigger receiver (taller than 6-1).

Yeah but look at James Harrison, Kurt Warner and Antonio Gates; all undrafted and are now top notch players while players like Ryan, Troy Williamson, and Heath Schuler all high draft picks and were busts. Sometimes the risk is worth the reward.

Kelley Washington would only replace the roster spot of Marcus Smith, since both are known for their special teams play.
Jerry Porter was bad news AS A RAIDER...think about that.
I'm kind of rooting for Hackett, who showed good skills prior to injuries that never got him untracked in 2008. Carolina thought a lot to get him from Seattle. But he never healed. He is still young (27) and if healthy, a great #4 receiver.
The ravens have about 60 decent players already on their roster, and playing special teams will help get you a spot. I think some good OL prospects (Cousins, Hale) and LBs (Burgess, Jones) might surprisingly not make the final 53.

Every time I wonder why the Ravens did or didn't do something (like draft a WR), I figure I just don't know what the coaches know. Like, maybe they already have someone on the team who didn't get a chance to play last year but who looks very promising. That's why I like this blog. It makes me feel more like an Insider even though I'm not.

Jamison,
What is the reason every team passed on Eron Riley? It certainly wasn't his stats. They're virtually identical to the overall 7th pick in the draft.

You really can not judge Jerry Porter. He played in Oakland for Goodness sake!!! If he is past the injuries that killed him in Jacksonville last year, I like his potential. Being put on a team that has a sense of direction could help him get on track.
Posted by: Brent | May 7, 2009 10:28 PM
Why not bring in 38 receivers to try out? That was the Orioles' way of building their pitching staff.
Posted by: Richard | May 7, 2009 10:41 PM
Jerry Porter has been a career bust. He was overpaid by Jax and the ridiculou salary doesn't represent the talent. Top tier WRs are just not available. We can only hope that the players already on the roster develop into steady, consitent receivers. Until then, there' always next season.

Just remember, teams passed on Brady for 6 rounds...

Once again, there is always going to be a few players who will fall through the cracks. I just don't see any of the undrafted rookie receivers making an impact ... or even making the team.

My opinion is that any of these four will be out quickly-all are injury prone and playing in the North is physical (minus the Browns). Look elsewhere Harrison may be old but is tough and smart.

I think Porter is done and Washington hasn't ever been good. If they pick up any of these guys it should be DJ.
And sleep on Marcus Smith if you want to, but as a WR they used him in the Red Zone almost exclusively in the second half of the year. He is a tenacious blocker out wide and on the 3 times he was targeted in the red zone he drew a PI from the D resulting in a 1st down on the ONE! He's worth keeping and playing!!

Jerry Porter would be the most likely to make the team because of his size and years in the league add him to the mix of D Mason,M Clayton and D Williams that would give Joe Flaco some weapon along with T heap L J Smith and the backs out of the backfield should make one of the most potent offences in the NFL and if they are lucky and sign K Washington that would just be awsome can you see the four reciever set they could put on the fieldand joe Flaco 's arm there might be some 500 yd passing games
