Does Ozzie have a wide receiver up his sleeve?

It is always wise to give Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome the benefit of doubt when it comes to the draft. Very few executives can maneuver through the college draft as deftly as Newsome does.
But when the Ravens rolled out of the two-day draft without a speedy wide receiver, it begged the question, "What's up?"

Getting Michael Oher in the first round was still another case of a good player dropping. The Ravens were proactive, going up to get him. All well and good. Jared Gaither and Oher could form one of the best tackle tandems in the NFL before long. That helps everybody, running backs, quarterback, receivers.

No knock on the rest of the picks, either. If Newsome and Eric DeCosta picked them, they must bring something special to the table. I won't quibble over any red flags at this point.

But where was the vertical threat that will boost the passing game? Where was the wideout that's going to stretch the field?

Is he on somebody else's roster right now? Is he out on bail somewhere?

It would help to eliminate the options that aren't likely to materialize first.

Let's scratch Anquan Boldin. The Cardinals rejected a second-round pick from the Bears on Saturday (No. 49 overall), according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Seems like it'll take at least a first-round pick to pry him loose. Then you've got to sign him. Oh, and did we mention, he wants $8- to $10 million on a new deal? OK, forget him.

Let's not even entertain Braylon Edwards. Would the Browns trade a potential playmaker within the division? George Kokinis wouldn't. So he's out.

Don't even bring up Plaxico Burress. He's without a team right now, unless you consider his potential prison team. Shoot yourself in the leg in a crowded restaurant in New York City and you need time to reflect on things. He's not an option now, not until he's cleared all his legal hurdles. But keep him in mind.

So, who's the guy?

To listen to Newsome, the Ravens already have him. Got him in 2006, fourth round, out of Oregon. Name of Demetrius Williams.

He's fast, he's big, he's talented. He's scored three touchdowns in five starts and 32 games with the Ravens. Two of them went for 70- and 77-yard touchdowns.

The downside is he played only 16 games the past two seasons because of ankle issues. Staying on the field has been the hard part so far. Here's what Newsome said on Sunday about the lack of a wideout in the draft:

"I will again say this: We went to the AFC championship game with the guys that we had, and Demetrius was not healthy. We get a healthy Demetrius Williams back -- and he's working toward that -- then with the way we're going to be able to protect it, the way Joe [Flacco] can throw it, the way our running backs can run it, and the way we play defense and special teams, we'll be around at the end of December and January just with the team we have right now. I feel very good about that."

Newsome also alluded to the fact there will be more players who become available before the season, just as tackle Willie Anderson was last year. That makes sense, too. But anybody good enough to elevate a whole offense is going to cost a lot of money. And that starts trouble with an established group.

Looks like Demetrius Williams, then.

I was saying this when a WR wasn't drafted and everybody else was crying as to why. We still have 3 months before training camp so don't count Ozzie out yet. He's a smart guy and I love the pick of Oher and Kruger.

Once a WR wasn't drafted by the 2nd round I figured something had to be up. Although Edwards is probably out of the question I wouldn't count out Boldin just yet. A 10% chance is still a chance. I would give up next yrs 1st rounder for him in a heartbeat. Why? Because nobody coming out of college next year will be better than him.

I also wouldn't count out Plaxico. I doubt very seriously he's going to jail for shooting himself, yeah he had an illegal handgun but 10,000 people in Baltimore have the same charge and get off for the first offense. Getting suspended by Goddell may be could be the issue.

And if we have to start the season without a new WR and just hope Williams stay's healthy...so be it. If he stay's healthy then he's the one who will stretch the field.

I was hoping for Anquan for the right price. But that fell through. I'm ok with the Ravens sticking to their in house options and not over extending the free agent or trade market.

Improving the offensive line and having a healthy offensive line will give Flacco more time to set up and throw to his targets. I belive this alone will be enough to get them in contention for the AFC Championship again.

It's kind of sad, but I found myself awaiting the list of UDFAs to see which receiver would sign on. There aren't any reported. I watched yesterday as receiver after receiver went off the board.
In the end, I trust what the front office is doing. They have earned every fan's trust.
I think there will be a receiver or two more eventually. Looking forward to training camp!

There are many recievers the ravens could potentially pick up as a fix to hold them over until something better comes along. They drafted the best players, and we saw that recievers were a reach in the draft (Heyward Bay). Maybe Marvin Harrison, Jerry Porter, Reggie Williams just to name a few..

I respect and trust Team Ozzie, but I don't think Mason/Clayton/Williams is the answer at WR. Yeah, we got to the NFC Championship game last year, but we also lost two of our big step-up playmakers on defense (Scott and Leonhard).

I can certainly see us having a better passing game next year, but what happens if we start giving up 15-20 points every game?

I'd like to see the Ravens send McGahee and Heap to AZ for Boldin. Even throw in a pick (3rd or 4th round). Personally, I'd rather rely on McClain/Rice at RB and Smith at TE than our current guys at WR.

it took us how many years to get a QB, not due for the WR for at least another 6 years

Ozzie is now 0 for 14 years drafting a wide receiver. Wouldn't want to mess up his perfect record. If the choice was Oher, a boom or bust OT with borderline "special needs" IQ (sorry, Michael) or future Hall of Famer Boldin, a guaranteed answer to the perpetual WR quandry, who else beside Ozzie wouldn't pull the trigger. Some say Oher is really dumb, so he'll fit right in with The Oz.

Drafting a good OT that can pass block without a need to max protect is more valuable that any receiver the team could draft of aquire.

If you can protect the QB with only the 5 linemen and do not need to max protect (by keeping a RB or TE or both) in to block... it makes all the diference because now these player will be able to run routes and catch balls which opens up the field. Once Oher is ready and in the starting line up... it will make a BIG difference in both the run and passing game.

As I have said before... games might be won by a WR or hot shot specialty guy occasionally... but I do not care about winning the occasional game or having a guy that always makes ESPN top plays... Why? Because championships are won and lost on the line of scrimmage. If the Ravens control the line (on both sides of the ball) they will win every time.

Keep up the good work Ozzie!

I'm tired of people saying that we're great cause we made the AFC Championship last year. At no time during the playoffs did we compete for a Super Bowl shot. We didn't have the offense to beat Pittsburgh and Arizona. I'm almost wishing we lost to Dallas and didn't make the playoffs so Ozzie and fans out there didn't get a big head about our playoff successes including a lucky at best win against the Titans.

We are getting better in the O-line and Secondary but the good teams like Pittsburgh, Indy, and New England will still laugh at our offense because we have no go-to receivers.

Duke University WR Eron Riley could make an impact with his size, speed, and hands. Riley set ACC records during his 4 seasons at Duke. Riley displayed 4.27 speed in the 40 yard dash, and 40" verticle leaping ability at the recent NFL Pro Day trials. If Flacco throws it, Eron will go get it. Riley has proven that he can play effectively through injuries, as well.

Maybe he is, I sure hope so but we need another WR.
Is there one floating out there no one noticed?
Probably.
To be noticed in College means being well regarded by a coach who recognizes the potential and plays the guy.
Doesn't always happen.
We let all star talent go unnoticed all the time.
Don't believe me? Look carefully next year at the bowl games and pay attention when you hear "college walk on, never played in High School"
What is that really telling you?
Coaching is not a science.
That kid that can't walk straight and grows two inches in his HS senior year might have the talent to be a PRO but we will never know because unless he decides to walk on in college no one will encourage him.
There are players out there no one knows.
They made a movie about guy in Phila., he did it.
He can not be the only one.

By the way if they do go to 18 games (YES!!!!) how many players will they expand the team by?
Hmmmm?

Jared: I hate to burst your bubble about Plax, but he is going to jail. Baltimore and New York aren't the same. New York has mandatory minimums for carrying a loaded unregistered handgun. Plax does not have a gun registed in New York, and the gun he had was clearly loaded as he shot himself. It's an open and shut case and the mayor wants to come down hard. I gaurentee he does a stretch and will not play a game in the upcoming season. Q is to expensive. It has nothing to do with our willingness to part with a first rounder and everything to do with us not being able to afford the contract he wants and rightfully deserves. We have a good team, we should be grateful we have quality backs who can take the pressure off the rest of our offense. We should also be grateful we play Cinci and Clevland twice a year.

I don't know why everyone doubts Ozzie. This time last year the O-line was seemingly a nightmare until Willie Anderson was acquired and John Matsko coached the hell out of a line that was considered, at best, below average during preseason.

The Ravens have five 6'1 or taller WRs on the roster already with 1-2 years experience on the developmental/practice squad. Considering how the draft shook out – is it possible the later round WRs available to draft were no better than what the Ravens already have? Maybe one or two of these developmental WRs will show some worth this spring and summer.

I'm not disappointed the Ravens didn't draft a WR this weekend. Barring injury, I think our current receivers Mason, Clayton, D. Williams with Heap and Sypniewski will be better because Joe Flacco will have a full season of experience under his belt and a full off season to prepare for next season. There are many variables to consider when developing a solid receiving unit and for the first time I can remember the Ravens have some consistency and a foundation between the QB/WRs positions to build from.

A comparison of rankings for Ravens picks.
Michael Oher, 23rd pick, Pro Football Weekly ranking 14th, Scouts 12th, ESPN grade 92.
Paul Kruger, pick 57, PFW 71, Scouts 63, ESPN grade 88.
Lardarius Webb, pick 88, PFW 125, Scouts 162, ESPN grade 59.
Jason Phillips, pick 137, PFW 109, Scouts 166, ESPN grade 66.
Davon Drew pick 149, PFW above 261, Scouts 245, ESPN grade 30,
Cedric Peerman, pick 185, PFW 104, Scouts 146, ESPN grade 68,
Good pick in Oher after that nothing special. Huge over-reach on Webb and Drew.

Whoever in our draft room has a thing for small school lightweight corners needs to be taken out behind the woodshed and made to stop it. Two wasted 3rd round picks over a few years. Kruger is typical 2nd round Ravens, potential but unfinshed, usually turns out bad for Ravens.

Jared,
Maybe you aren't familiar with the New York City law on possession of an illegal firearm. It is a mandatory minimum of 4 years in jail. The New York mayor has already gone on record saying that Plaxico needs to be made an example of. He is going to jail. Did you think Michael Vick was going to get 2 years for dogfighting? I didn't.
Everyone wants to forget out about previous drafts whenever a new one come around. When we lost Bart Scott, everyone was saying we had to draft his replacement. We already did, last yeat with Goodman. Now, it is receiver. Yes, we have Williams, but don't forget about Marcus Smith. He is a talented receiver who should step up this year.

Jared, I suspect you will find that Manhattan takes illegal handguns much more seriously than Baltimore...

I have a hard time thinking that Dem. Williams could be the guy. Never shown anything much so far. He's probably the Ravens biggest blunder ever (well next to blunder boy) since Brandon Marshall was still on the board when we took him.

Ozzie should take a hard look and invite Matt Jones (Jags W/O) cut this past year for off the field problems. He's Big (6'5" 240 and is fast (4.4 40 in his combine). he could definitely stretch defenses, and with Smith at TE, 2 big targets for Flacco. And, he won't cost much!

I think you need to look at Dez Bryant for Oklahoma State. Guaranteed top Ten pick if he comes out next year.

I know he had zero catches in 2008, but God help me, I think Marcus Smith can become a good receiver.

they may try to get money back

if u look at the typical thing that the ravens do is they draft a replacement player ( lost scott , gooden ,lost AD Tomas gain J-Johnson ) now anderson will be leaving us and we gain $ 2.3 million and we got to sign players first then maybe if you also remember that they said that they wount trade shocky and a week later he went to the saints so please never say never also we need a play maker to compete aginist the steelers and be able to beat them also the cards have a million dollars under the cap wile we have 12.3 million and there is a possibility but we would be sound but i would also trade mason because of to main thing his age ,and his contract and that would be additional 5 million and look at the team 17. 3 million and you take and player for 8 a starting positionand use 9.3 million to sgin the rookie also some of the other player like grubbs and yanda , suggs and other players

I wouldn't count out Boldin yet either Mike. I'm not saying it will happen, but did the Bears only offer a 2nd rounder and nothing else? We can throw in McGahee and/or Heap, after all we did add a rb and a te (who I'm not thrilled with, that's my biggest gripe of the draft), or maybe we add a late pick to it, who knows.

Briefly, Didn't like Ozzie's draft:
Oher is a good pick but then he picked Kruger and Webb. Seems unchatacteristic, Kruger is missing his splean, Kidney, Bowl, Interetines, and Webb was kicked off his team and was ranked like the 28th CB and not ranked in the top 150???
Phillips, tore his menicus at the combine. Hey how would the Ravens first 3 or 4 picks looked if Ozzie had not traded and taken Nicks, WR, Beatty, OT, Cook, TE, and Sidbury, DE all available when the Ravens selected. I think Oher can start but I just don't see the players Ozzie took closing the gap on the Steelers who the Ravens lost to 3 times last yr. FLacco could have used some play makers like Nicks and Cook, now that would have helped close the gap and a better pass rush from the fastest DE / Olber at the combine would have also helped. Vs walking wounded and trouble makers that Ozzie drafted. All I can say is Ozzie better have a deal in the works for Boldin or some big WR.

O, hey Mike, are the Ravens interested in signing Cosby from Texas? That'd be a good addition, or is he already signed? Are the Ravens done with rookie free agents?

I don't see it. 3 TD's in 5 games? Never stayed healthy for a full season? I'm sorry, but Williams doesn't strike fear in anyone. Did you see Williams or anyone for that matter draw double coverage last year? Part of the reason those guys stayed in to block was more than Anderson, it was because without any vertical threat teams could just bring it down after down. We NEED a QUALITY WR. Not some dump-off after the draft reject. It will be another year of close but not quite and another year of age on the defense.

dont even bring up plaxico burress....but keep him in mind. got it.

Somehow Texas reciever Quan Cosby wasn't drafted. He'd be worth an invitation to camp. Priest Holmes became a Raven via the same road from Austin to Baltimore.

I find the whole next day review of the draft quite interesting. Consider the comments about Oher's intelligence or lack there of. He had a .3 grade point and managed to raise that to a 2.05. For all of you knuckleheads go do the math and see what he had to do to get his grade point up. Also, he really did not start playing football until a junior in high school and 5 years later he is an All-American, again, go do the math and see what he had to do to get to this point. This kid is:
1. Bright enough to succeed
2. Has one heck of a drive to go from homeless on the street to an almost college grad (18 hours away)
3. There is nothing the NFL or the Ravens can throw at him that he has not dealt with. A 6 year old living on the streets. Get real people.

Losing Bart Scott although a loss of a good player is not going to reduce this defense and losing Leonhard, although a good player, not on anyone's All Pro. The management has made upgrades in the D and now in the O with the draft. It will be interesting to see how the team progresses through the season ( although the great equalizer, injuries is always waiting in the wings)

Sure, Williams might stay healthy for 16 games but what happens if Mason and/or Clayton don't? This is why the Ravens go to the playoffs every OTHER year -- they over-evaluate their own talent and think they can just replay the previous season. The only time they've made back-to-back playoff appearances was in 2001 when they upgraded the passing offense by dumping dilfer and picking up Grbac. That allowed them to withstand the injury to Jamal Lewis.

Where did DJ Moore from Vanderbilt get drafted? I was surprised to not even see his name in the first round, did he fail a drug test?
Laurinaitis would of looked great in a ravens uniform too, but IN OZZIE WE TRUST

key person in this draft is Webb. A vertical TE was available and they passed for somebody who may be a reach. At least he hits. However, if he works out, Frank Walker can go, saving 1.5 million in cap. Oher may make Anderson expendable, saving another 2.5. That provides the potential to sign a veteran if Demetrius or our other 2 08 drafts cannot get up to speed.

Maybe Ozzie did have a good draft, but not getting a WR to stretch the field is a "Cardinal Sin" in the AFC North. How could the Ravens NOT draft a WR among their 6 picks??? Pittsburgh and their fans are really laughing now. We were 13-6 last year with HALF of our losses to the Squeelers. Hey everyone, THEY HAVE US FIGURED OUT!!!!! No deep threat, just put 8 in the box, blitz every down, and double cover Mason. No homerun ball to worry about. Remember, they are the closest Ravens' clone in the NFL. Great defense, good running game, great against the run -- the only difference -- they CAN and DO stretch the field. Without being competitive with the Squeelers, we can't finish 1st and say what you want, the wild-card path to the SBowl is very difficult. We finally found our QB and now we don't help him out - what a mystery.

I've always been a Demetrius Willams fan....He showed great promise with his speed ,dynamic route running, and great jumping ability......but I remember the scouting report the year he came out of Oregon Saying he was slight of build and not very durable...... so far thats been very accurate....at this point I dont think he can take the pounding at the NFL level....not to many players can be like Derrick Mason.

Ok, so maybe he will do some time. I'm not a fan of his I just know that alomost everybody else get's off for their first offense, but I guess he won't. Oh well...

Anyone know why we didn't make serious efforts to go after Holt?

a couple of comments. @ dan in bmore hon - what would make you think the cards would want magahee and heap with a third round pick especially after the cards drafted a running back. secondly trading magahee would accelerate the cap hit and cost us 11 million in dead money this year. so that issue is dead.

as far as this whole group of naysayers - who amongst you saw these players more than once this past year. i realize that this column is created so everyone can be an armchair qb but reading some of the garbage you all write is hilarious. the ravens have a long history of picking well in the draft compared to other teams and the draft is a crapshoot to begin with. if you want to comment and sound stoopid (sic) please continue, but don't for a second think you know more than our scouts do. that would make you just like Jerry Jones and Danny Snyder and look how wonderful their teams do on a year in and year out basis.

I hope Ozzie really does have a plan cause there's just no denying WR needs to be improved. I mean, Demetrius Williams? Yeah he showed flashes his rookie year but he has been on IR the past two seasons and can anyone say he has been impressive when he's been on the field in 07 or 08? I certainly wouldn't say that.

The Ravens have a very average group of receivers. Williams has the aforementioned problems, Clayton disappears too much, and Mason has been reliable but the guy is 35!!! Ozzie is a great GM but I seriously hope he isn't just satisfied with what we have cause that could be a problem.

Alex,

Wake up! The Ravens were an elite team last year. They were at worst, the 4th or 5th best team in the NFL last season. The were 11-5 and tied Tennessee for the widest point margin in the league. All this while playing Pittsburgh twice, Tennessee, at Indy, at Miami, and having to play all four teams from the NFC East, arguably the best division from top. There schedule was stacked and they still won 11 games and dominated some darn good teams. Then in the playoffs, they dismantled a red-hot Miami team on the road and won at the league's #1 team during the regular season. Not sure what games you were watching last year. They were elite last year from start to finish.

Kudos to Mr Oz for getting what was probably the top kicker out there (Gano from Fla State) to compete for the position....I thought he may have been out last draft pick....kid was one of the most prolific kickers in Fla. HS history and was a stud in college and he's a bright lights big city kinda guy....winner of that race he or Hauschka will be a good replacement...

Everytime I see something about Anquan Boldin I wonder why everyone is wanting to sign him. Yes I would love to have him here in Charm City but CAN WE PLEASE GIVE SIZZLE A LONG TERM CONTRACT FIRST!!! You bring in someone like one of theses big name recievers and give him a deal he's not gonna like it. I know I wouldn't. Come on Oz, get the deal done man! Our bedrock priciple has always been defense and to have one of our best defensive players out there flapping is not cool.

I'm so tired of hearing about Williams. Watch the film. He will leap over defenders and grab the ball only to drop it every single time. He is not the answer. Please get someone new!!!!!!!!!!! Patrick Johnson all over again

1st pick great, 5th pick OK. What happened to no players with issues.
I feel like The Baltimore Raiders after reading this draft. Winning Attitude is awesome Bad Attitude is something entirely different. I hope Ozzie gets what he expects from this draft.

Eron Riley Duke WG looks alot like Bey with his speed and athletic ability and the numbers he put up in the ACC. (Although alot of his numbers came in one game Navy)

There must be something which kept him from being selected.

But if he can run as fast as the Duke pro day indicates he may be a real prospect.

Hey, stop complaining about wide receiver go to guy and others open field threat... we've got in mason a huge 3rd down go to guy! and if williams is healthy, he's definitely a dangerous vertical threat, and heap and LJ smith are going to be serious weapon in the endzone if we can allow them to run routes instead max protecting! that's why once again Oher choice make sense! and maybe our 2008 guys like marcus smith or some 2009 undrafted players will find a place in the roster? once again i think it was a solid draft, not flashy but solid! exactly what we need!

Geez, everybody is so qualified to determine what a players future will be.

The draft is nothing more than a calculated crap shoot. There are way too many 'can't miss' prospects taken in the first round who amount to nothing special and just as many, if not more, who are taken later, with 'poor ratings' who turn out to be good, solid players. Bart Scott, Ed Mulitalo and AD weren't high on anybody's list...neither was Kelly Gregg or Priest Holmes, while Travis Taylor and Anthony Weaver were...and that's just here.

The Ravens cut James Harrison.

I will say this, in most cases, the QB makes the receiver, not the other way around and the more time an NFL QB has to look around, the better he and his receivers will look. Don't forget what the Giants did to Brady and Co. in the Super Bowl...they made him look ordinary by putting pressure on him.

If Flacco gets time to look around because of a young, athletic and talented OLine that also allows 5 out in the pattern instead of 2 or 3, they are all going to look much better.

Let's withhold judgment until we at least get a look at these guys in preseason, shall we?

Mostly, post draft discussion is back seat driving, but after more than a decade (13 years) of Ozzie's drafts patterns become identifiable. By now it is safe to say that WR is his weak spot. He can pick O-linemen and tweener backer-ends all day long, give him that, but J Lew is the closest he's ever gotten to a competent receiver. All accolades for Ozzie aside, and for those on this board boohooing because we dare question the "Oz", shut up, that's what a discussion is for, this accounts for 1 SuperBowl for a freak defensive unit in a 13 year span, and so we are allowed to question a problem that stretches back 13 years and includes the "wondrous" finds of Travis Taylor and Patrick Johnson. The fact is, the last 2 AFC teams to make the big game, the Pats and Steelers, had 339 receptions and 303 respectively. It has become a pass happy league dependent on big HEALTHY receivers that stretch the field (re Randy Moss and Santana Holmes). Last year, the Ravens had 261 receptions, or 60 shy of the average of the last 2 AFC Champs. They are exactly 1 receiver shy of having an offense that merits being favored to take the big game, which is just how it felt last year watching the 3 close losses to the Steelers, the Ravens, short of finding a pair of capable hands to complement Mason, are still agonizingly short of being ready to take it all. My bet is, that the missing link that will make us all cuss out the television in January can be found in Ozzy's blind spot at the Wide Receiver position. A position that is just out of Ozzie's reach when it comes to evaluating talent. Of course we can get in with a fluke defensive run or a lucky bounce because there is talent on the team and on the coaching staff, but to establish the "dynasty" Harbaugh and Baltimore covets, this blind spot will have to be addressed once and for all. If anybody here thinks anyone in the league fears "spider man" in 1 game out 3 Demetrius Williams, you're going to feel really silly when we get trounced by the Colts and the Pats yet again, and really nauseous when we lose to the Steelers by that one score a wide receiver could provide.

You read it here first... taking Kruger at DE and ahving a few here already, anyone thinking that they swap Suggs for Boldin????? Had been a rumor for a while and we would be able to sign Boldin to his deal with the cap relief... Interesting...very interesting!

During a Monday radio interview, Eric DeCosts indicated that the Ravens have not finished addressing the receiver issue. I'm not sure what that means considering the most intriguing free agents (Jerry Porter, Reggie Williams, Matt Jones, etc.) have major off-field or character issues. The only viable free agent out there is D.J. Hackett and he has never lived-up to expectations. We're not getting Boldin because he wants too much money, would cost too much in draft picks and has too many health issues so I think we all need to get past that.

Don't forget that injuries to the other tight ends forced Todd Heap to do a lot more blocking last year than he has ever done in the past. If L.J. Smith and Quinn Sypniewski can carry some of the blocking load and Cam Cameron can work Heap into the offense, it should open up some space for Mason and Clayton. Hopefully that huge catch he made at the end of the Titans playoff game was a sign of things to come.

Oz has something up his sleeve but it isn't D Williams. He can't hold on to the ball half the time. He isn't the answer. Boldin's stock may drop. As a matter of fact it already has.

I think that Riley could have a good impact on the Ravens. He's just as tall, about as fast, and has better career numbers than DHB. He was simply unnoticed because he went to Duke! But UMD and Duke play the same competition, yet Riley beat out DHB in numbers. I think we found a diamond in the rough for a future WR.

How about bringing in someone--ANYONE. Like say a nice third receiver like Ike Hilliard, a veteran like Amani Toomer or Shaun McDonald?

With all the whining about not getting a receiver let's remember one thing... The QB can't complete a pass if he is on his back all game long. You protect the QB and the receivers will get open.

Well, you can see why most of the posters aren't drafting for NFL teams...they simply don't know what they are talking about. Quite simply, if you don't have a quarterback who can throw and has time to throw you could have a Jerry Rice type receiver or Alexander on your team and he will look like the biggest bust ever. Or the other scenario is have an Alexander or Rice and no quarterback and line as we have seen in the past. Forget all this talk about high priced receivers, we already have them. Last year Heap was kept in to block and he was the only healthy tight end we had so you couldn't use 2 tight end schemes and you didn't have the protection to line up 3 receivers. The will evaluate what they have in the mini camps scheduled for next month and go from there. You can have receivers with all the speed in the world but if they can't catch or run consistent routes forget it. The posters who say we are fine have it right.

Sounds like most fans only wanted Ozzie to draft a WR. It doesn’t matter if the WR fit the mold of athlete the team is looking for or if the WR is any good. Just draft a damn WR! So says the fans.

I'm glad Ozzie doesn't make decisions based on what the fans want.

Also, I'm sick and tired of reading about Anquan Boldin. Arizona was never going to trade him and Ozzie was not going to mortgage the future to get him. As it turns out, both parties were just going through the motions, in other words, using each other to satisfy the audience at hand.

See Eron Riley Undrafted FA signee.

Why don't the Ravens look at Ashley Lelie? He is big and fast. I don't think he would cost a ton either??? Thoughts?

i agree with the D. Williams thing. Having watched him out here in Oregon he was probably the best receiver in the Pac-1- his final two years and he was never getting nicked up or hurt so perhaps he's just had a little bit of bad luck. He should have played and been thrown to a lot more his first season but BB wouldnt do it. The man can flat out run to the ball. I was hoping that Oz would draft Sammie Stroughter from Oregon State. Go to youtube and search for his game against USC last year,,,WOW!!

So glad some of you are not our general manager. You speak as if you know a lot more then Ozzie. No GM always makes the best picks, but compared to most others he does a great job. Some of your suggestions sound desperate, Matt Jones, Plax, Reggie Williams. They have off the field problems and some of the have not proven themselves. It is not as easy as you think to trade for another player. There are cap issues, team chemistry and other things that prevent a team from picking up another player. Be patient, see what we got in some of the young WR and those returning from injury. Also with improved protection, better TE depth, proven running game, and another year for Joe F. I think we will see improvement.

I like the idea of a humbled Plaxico, but he'll end up going to prison in NY to "set an example." It's funny how celebrities consistently get off on murder charges, however are sent to prison for shooting themselves or driving on probation.

Haloti Ngata .....He complimented and Improved the defense by providin the help Ray Needed ....

Hohr same thing he will strengthen the line and Open a domino effect, better protection .....better blockin schemes for rushing .....which then, in turn opens the field ....

yes we want a serious deep threat to complete the circle however we can and will do better next year with what we have now ....wit just that line improvement ...the line is the most important element ....Oz is on point ...

gotta remember the dificulty of contracts and salary caps people...... stop barkin out impossible scenerios ...

Ozzie got us ...he will find a way and if not we still better than last year trust me ....

as many fans have indicated i can not believe we did not draft a wide receiver. it appears we will not obtain boldin and demetrius williams has spent more time on ir then on the field and when he plays he makes no impact. we drafted a db in 3rd round who had problems and had to finish his career in division 2 and another lb with a torn menicus passing up numerous wide outs. we have no one that has vertical speed that teams would double cover. we cannot continue to win with defense and a running game. good teams like pirrsburg will put 8 men in the box and shut us down; george

Seems we got Eron riley in Baltimore!
this guy is a great combination of speed and power... Is body (6/3, 206) seems to be big enough to handle NFL hits and his speed: 4,36 at the 40 dash (close to DHB!!!!) he posted tons of records on his small school with two solid season in 2007 and 2008... he got some inconsistency and drop ball too often but he is a proven vertical threat with outstanding time speed, a good leaper with the ability to do some damage after the catch, and a smart guy with tons of experience! let see what he can do in pre season but remenber the ravens always find a pure gem in undrafted rookie: i bet on this one!

just seen some eron riley highlights on you tube! speek for itself! the guy is a speedster!!!! CB wil definetely have to respect is in line speed ! it could be a terrific player regarding flacco arm strenght!!!!

agreeing with DAN & SEAN:
plaxico is probably going to jail. nyc is no joke on that. there is an automatic minimum of time for the offense. he would be good in a ravens jersey. i felt that when he left pittsburgh. don't think it will happen.

Do we need another Receiver ...... the answer is no. 1. Todd Heap blocked all last season , so by getting Oher and L.j smith that will free up Heap to do some damage down the middle.
2. We still have Smith that hasn't been giving a shot look out for him in mini camp.
3. Trading for Boldin and renewing his contract is crazy. Not to mention the tag on Suggs is an insult for him not get a new deal , and next year we have key player's to resign.

Once again OZZIE is building for the future and working with what we have and keeping this organization in the running everyear. That being said you will think him later on in the season.

AGREE with Riley! 4.36 speed @ pro day (would have been 4th fastest @ combine), 6-3, 210 lbs.......Ozzie and Eric might have done it again!

I have complete faith/respect in Ozzie, but history has shown that WR's are not his field of expertise. So here is what I suggest, how about we all close our eyes, and click our heels together three times. Then maybe, we might have the very first deep threat in Ravens history.

Demetrious Williams must have coined the "Spiderman" nickname for himself. Only someone with a perceived sense of self importance who can't catch a ball in traffic would come up with a name like that. We can't rely on this guy to be our answer. He's still a question mark.

Joe needs another year or 2 before we start turning into a passing team. Mason and Clayton did a nice job in the first year (coaches, players and systems) of so many parts of the team. I think the media has made a bigger deal out of getting a wide out than what is needed.
Thanks Ozzie and everyone else for another great job in the draft.
PS: Can't wait to see a even more aggresive D. Great off season moves.

Why should Ravens fans believe Michael Oher won't have a big learning curve ? because Ozzie says so...Oher will be a rookie going up against complex NFL defenses and veteran pass rushers. Lets also don't forget it wasn't the Steelers Oline that got them to the Superbowl it was a Qb that could buy time and Receivers that could stretch the field.

Hey Ozzie: We went to the AFC championship game with our receiving corp , but we LOST. It seems like only yesterday when Hines Ward responded in the media to Derrick Mason's threat of a Ravens offense in the AFC championship game with a sarcastic "Oooooooo". And it make sense. We not only lost the championship game, but we lost every game last year against the Stealers. Who cares if you can go to the AFC championship game if you can't beat the reigning Superbowl champ who also happens to be a division rival. Michael Oher...GREAT Pick. Kruger...couldn't come at a better time, but WE NEED a big, fast, physical receiver with great hands.

He always seems to know the difference between two similar players and how they'll fit on this team. A minor yet classic example of this was just exercised by the recent agreement in principle on a contract with former Tennessee Titans CB and kick returner Chris Carr.
