DHB: Like mother, like son
While a party of 30 swirled around a home in Silver Spring Saturday morning, Vivian Heyward-Bey seemed relaxed and ready for the day her son learns his NFL destination. Unmoved by reports that Darrius might wind up in Oakland with the Raiders' seventh pick, Vivian kept her emotions in control.
Darrius credits his mother with his work ethic and character, and she said in her family growing up, there was little choice.
"I come from a family that has strong character," she said. "I lost my father five years ago at 92, and he was an upstanding man. As far as our family, we didn't get in trouble."
Vivian left open the possibility of joining Darrius in Oakland if that rumor becomes fact. But she said she's also equally prepared to let him go off on his own, too.
"Darrius made me feel very comfortable in what he thinks," she said.

We get it ... Heyward-Bey is from Maryland, great story. But this is Ravens town and the they did not draft him. Why do we have to have 5 stories on Heyward-Bey. Good luck to him and his family, but let's talk about the Ravens please!

There are also many of us in this area who had the privilege of knowing Darrius and his family from his time at McDonogh. He is not only a great talent, but a humble, hard-working young man, with a great sense of humor. With all the negative stories about our young athletes that populate the press, how can anyone tire of reading about a home grown kid who through a combination of hard work, grit and good mentoring, made great use of his God-given gifts
to achieve his goals? It is a story that many young people in our community should know and use as a source of personal inspiration. You go Darrius! You too Viv!
