Ravens need to draft a right tackle

Regardless if the Ravens sign OT Orlando Pace, it would be great if the team still drafted a good, young right tackle. Pace might still have something left in the tank, but the Ravens keep signing broken-down veterans.

It appears the Ravens want to improve play at the position over a year ago when they had Willie Anderson and Adam Terry. Anderson, a 14-year veteran, was solid despite several leg injuries. Terry has never played up to the potential that made him the Ravens' second-round draft pick back in 2005.

The Ravens haven't had a good, steady player at the right tackle position since Orlando Brown came to Baltimore with the old Browns back in 1995-96. It's the most glaring hole on a good, promising young offensive line. When the Ravens keep tinkering around with these veterans, it reminds me of 2001 when they signed Leon Searcy (former Steelers, Jaguars lineman), and he lasted less than a week before tearing a tricep in his arm. It appears now that if the Ravens sign Pace, they cut Anderson, and use some of his salary to pay Pace.

The Ravens would like to cut Terry, but he doesn't make enough money to create the type of cap space needed to sign Pace. But it would be nice if the Ravens had both Pace and Anderson. Between the two of them, you could piece them together and get one good season out of both. Pace hasn't played a complete season since 2005.

At this point,in my opinion Willie Anderson proved he has more in the tank then Orlando(Can't stay healthy the last 3 years)Pace. And Willie is hungry too,a different kind of hungry then Orlando. The last time I saw Orlando he looked out of shape and very immobile.I see no reason to let Willie go ,nothing better left out there. We gave up 33 sacks last year and got better as the season went on.And that was with Marshall Yanda hurt, who I think could move to center if he had too.

Mike,

What about Cousins that we drafted in the third round last year. Why not let him compete for the RT spot this year?

Ron i don't know who you are or where you are from , but i have been preaching to the choir about this since they drafted terry. Adam terry was a bust out draft pick then and still remains a bust now.Anderson was a great tackle in his day but can barley make it to the line now. You know and i know that championships are won and lost on both lines, but it always seems like the ravens take the cheap route in addressing there line. Jason brown was 100% right when he said what he said about ozzie directing all the money on this team to teh defense.Todd heap had to stay in and block the entire year to help out. They ought to just cut ties with terry and be done with it. They let tony pashos's go, another young offensive lineman that was just about to get his payday.Ozzie doesn't seem to want and pay for that position. Jason brown was going to be all pro and was only 25 years old.

Now I know why you're the expert. Just the other day, I was thinking the Ravens should draft a bad, old right tackle. But now, thanks to you, I see that a good, young one would probably be better. Keep up the good work, Mike!

I don't see any way that Pace would agree to sign on as a platoon right tackle. Besides the fact that he has always been a left tackle (and that transition is not an easy one, even for a multiple Pro Bowl winner), there has to at least be one team that will offer him a guaranteed starting job. I just can't see Pace agreeing to sign on for a reasonable amount of money to platoon at a position he isn't familiar with. I agree with you that they need to draft depth on the O-line.

I agree getting younger on the RT side of the line is better than Pace or Anderson. I like Pace and Anderson actually but if you have not played a full season in years then why are considering we just cut Rolle for the same reasons. Humm does not seem consistent. Beside signing Holt and drafting a RT in first or second round spells more wins to me.

Why are we not talking about Torry Holt? He is clearly a solution to a problem position that should be more of a priority than right tackle

totally agree with you!
anderson or pace are short term answers and terry is not the long term answer... what about oniel cousins? this guy have some focus problems but he got a nasty attitude and a good punch...if he can handle the mental side and avoid stupid fouls he could be a great point of attack...
there are also nice options in the upcoming draft, like phil loadholt a huge specimen who remenber me jared gather or eben britton a solid prospect...

The Ravens don't *need* to draft a right tackle. They picked two guys last year who could develop into the "right tackle of the future", in Oniel Cousins and David Hale. One of those guys is likely to win the job outright in the next couple seasons. The Ravens just need a short-term stopgap at the position.

we need a big time reciever not an offensive linemen we have no deep threat and its getting old

From an injury standpoint, I don't think Pace will make it through a entire season. I think we stand pat with Terry and Anderson and pick up some depth through the draft.

I would agree about right tackle being a need on the O-line. Adam Terry is inconsistent and hasn't lived up to being a 2nd round pick, and a guy to eventually take over for Willie Anderson would be nice, maybe take a guy in middle of the draft. However, they should avoid Pace, he's missed way too much time and is there really any guarantee he will be a step up from Anderson? I don't think so, especially at this point in his career. Anderson performed pretty well for someone who signed just before the season started, it would be a mistake to let him go. So keep Anderson, draft a RT, and avoid Pace.

I feel we should drop out of thr first round and use that signing bonus money to sign Pace and keep Anderson as well. Last year was the first year we had an effective offense in Baltimore.

We need to stop screwing around and bring back the real force of the running game: Lorenzo Neal. And Searcy played for the Jags.

Investing money in Pace seems like a waste. I say we give Willie another season. The guy played reasonably well last year and is hungry to play for a winner (after years with the Bungles)

I agree that we need to draft a tackle as well. Someone to develop behind Anderson.

For one of the first times, I agree completely Preston. I liked the Matt Birk signing, I even liked the Willie Anderson signing last year to help provide some veteran leadership. But I say no way to Pace, it worries me that we are plugging so many older guys into this line when just a year ago, this was one of the youngest, up and coming, (not to mention healthiest) o-lines in the league. I say draft a RT in the 2nd or 3rd round and start bringing him up behind Anderson this year.

By the time the Ravens the decent offensive lineman will be gone. This is a thin draft for top tackles.

This is not a glaring need for the Ravens. They drafted two guys last year. They need to finally fill that HUGE glaring hole at WR. They need a deep threat WR to compliment the franchise QB we finally have. Its about time the Ravens fill that hole. It has been way to long for a glaring hole that big not to be filled.

Terry Holt for 16+ games? Please, don't count on it.

The press previously had hyped Yanda as good at the RT position. Assuming he recovers from his knee injury, why has everyone soured on him? Remember the articles about his mean dispostion and high motor?

Lou

I would rather see the Ravens draft a good Bubba Smith type DE that can actually bring down a quarterback!

Draft a ot mid-draft (4-5),
sign WR- Saints- Lance Moore (slot) for second round tender after cutting a couple of role players, D. Williams is a prime candidate. Trade the last pic to move up and see whats out there after the draft from the cut list. Please draft a fast rb Brown comes to mind.

To call Terry a bust is ludacris. He may have not lived up to expectations in being dominent, he has still been a decent backup that has filled in at LT,RT, and RG and played fairly well. When most of our O-line went down in '07, Terry played like a starter. Terry could be a starting RT on quite a few teams like the 49ers, Lions, and so on. Terry cannot be a be a complete bust because at worst he'll be a solid and versitile backup. Most definitely worth that loose change in his contract for that depth alone.

Some of the posts are missing the obvious: O-Line *was* this team's offensive achilles heel. They had to keep the TE's/RB's in to block or have them chip to keep the pass rush out of the esteemed Mr. Flacco's nostrils.

Check the game film; often there were only two or three receivers out in the pattern against the good teams. Forcing a young signal caller to throw into double teams or not at all is definitely not good for the ole' stat sheet. Sure, a speedy wideout will help a little, but not nearly so much as a good pass blocking line.

Jason Brown was wrong in his comments. We paid J.O. very well. If Gaither continues to progress he'll get his bucks when his time is in. The big bucks on the O line go to the guy who protects the blind side of your QB; usually the left tackle. Brown wanted more than the going rate for a center. He wanted guard money. Grubbs and Yanda will be our guards for quite a while. With the cap you cannot afford to overpay for a position when you can get the same performance cheaper. The Oz is a wizard at this.

I agree we did pay J.O like 80 million over his carrier, we have paid plenty to offensive players. When it comes to Jason Brown I think he is a good player but I don’t think he is worth 37 million. I think that was the right move to let him walk for that kind of money. Over the next few years we will have to pay Gaither, Grubbs,Yanda, Ngata(thanks Redskins). Flacco if he continues also. I think we can we can find a center in the draft over the next couple of years. We can’t pay everyone or else we would have like a $100 million in contracts just for O-lineman.

Its OK to improve the team, but last I checked St Louis had the worst O_line in the league and they cut Pace. There has to be more to it. Dont overpay this guy, he has made his money. If he comes its because he wants to win, which is good. JEREMY MACLIN, JEREMY MACLIN, JEREMY MACLIN. I think I made my point.

I agree, Mike, and I would even take it a step further. Make it a priority to draft offensive and defensive linemen in the early and/or middle rounds EVERY YEAR. It all starts with the big boys, on both sides of the ball. If you have consistently dominant lines, you don't need the big money skill players because the lineman can take most of the pressure off of the other positions.

Anderson is good with the run, but laughable in pass protection. Pace, despite his age, is still dominate in both areas. This one is a no-brainer, cut Anderson, sign Pace. Besides, Pace on the right side means he faces less speed rushers thus less chance of injury.

Could you imagine Pace and big Willie in that jumbo package the Ravens run and giving the ball to McClain?? Man is it football season yet??!

The ravens just went to the AFC championship game and came real close. Real good O tackles are hard to come by. Ozzies doing the best he can. Get real mike. Think positive and qiute mentioning the old browns. Where are you from? mike k.

are you guys crazy? I think willie anderson played at a Pro Bowl level last year. look at the film. this team was good because offense improved. this guy played at a high level last season. you guys and mr preston are not football people

I agree with the guy who said bring back L. Neal. Not much talk about him, but he wa the key behind much of the running success that the Ravens had last year.

The Ravens are bringing in Eastern Michigan OL TJ Lang on Wednesday 3/25
