Ravens' Rolle refuses pay cut
The Ravens recently met with the agent for cornerback Samari Rolle and asked him to take a pay cut from the $4.1 million he is expected to make this season.
Rolle declined to take the pay cut, and the Ravens put him on the trading block during the last week. The Ravens intitally wanted a third-round pick, but later decided to take anything they could get.
Now that the Ravens have agreed to a four-year deal with cornerback Domonique Foxworth, Rolle could be cut soon.

What a fighter. I'm sure somebody will pick him up. Looks like the Ravens are getting a face lift. It's kinda refreshing. It's just too bad that the ones that have to suffer are the players that made so many memories in this town...BUT that's the nature of the business...

Rolle has missed alot of games over the last two seasons. I approve of his release since he refused the pay cut.
Posted by: chris | February 27, 2009 3:50 PM
Amen to that as I said weeks ago, Rolle is not great and got burned several times this past season. Get rid of him.
Posted by: Jon | February 27, 2009 3:52 PM
why would the ravens give foxworth a huge contract. he won't live up to it. as far as samari rolle goes good-bye.
Posted by: moe | February 27, 2009 4:15 PM
let's cut samari, too much injuries concerns...and with foxworth and fabian we have good young cover corner!!! let fing a good nikelback with the draft now!
as i said in another post this morning, let try to sign montgomery the packers DE! now that we cut marques douglas and with trevor price getting older and the back problems of edwards, we need a true DE who can fit in a 43 or 34 defense!
Posted by: mika from france | February 27, 2009 4:23 PM
on the deal "Aye Caramba".
Posted by: moe | February 27, 2009 4:31 PM
why the deal for that much money? i get that he's good, i get that he's local, but that's a lot of money. and can we sign any of our own free agents?
Posted by: justin | February 27, 2009 4:53 PM
This does seem excessive. His numbers have fallen off every year he's played. I realize he's a young guy, but why pay $7M a year for him? I try not to doubt Ozzie - he does a solid job of balancing new/old, cheap/expensive. But was Foxworth worth it?

How fast can you say BYE-BYE Samari Rolle? Never liked his style of play anyway. He is not a player
Posted by: Andre | February 27, 2009 5:18 PM
Rolle for 4.1 is a steal. He must have some sort of lingering injury. May not have liked to tackle but he has some of the best feet and hips in the league, and his play down the stretch was extremely commendable. That is what you look for. Wait until you see Foxworth tackle. That being said he has the potential to be a young Samari if he can get his life together.

I hope Ozzie knows what he is doing with Foxworth, I'm still hoping he takes a CB in the 2nd round. I'm just not so sure I buy him, I mean it's good for depth absolutely but I'd like to see a more phyical corner back there.

$7 million a year deal for a CB that isn't even an established starter in this league? Seems like a bit of a desperation sign to me.
Rough start to the free agency period for the Ravens, although this increases the odds that Ray-Ray gets his wishes (again).

I like Foxworth..... but I have a feeling Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes Braylon Edwards,Chad Johnson and Limas Sweed will sleep a little easier tonight than they did last night. ....please draft Ladarius Webb,Domonique Johnson,,Coye Frances,Brandon Hughes,Chris Clemons,Sean Smith,Curtis Taylor or Victor Harris...why settle for more small corners when you can get much needed height, strength and speed....Sean Smith's combine 40 was faster than Alphonso Smith and he's alot taller.....quarterhorses cant run with thouroubreads Ozzie,...... dont blow it again like you did with Mckelvin , Cromartie and Talib.

I swear what a bunch or morons we have as Ravens fans. Where there hell is your loyalty? Rolle played with Epilepsey and was hung out to dry on several occaisions by Ed Reed but didn't say a bad word. I don't recall him getting burned this year very often and was clearly the best cover guy we had this year. I swear sometimes I am embarrassed to call my self a Ravens fan when I read some of the cowardly posts on here.
Posted by: Mark | February 27, 2009 6:22 PM
Rolle played his role well while here. When he and CMac were both 100% they were tough together. He showed class through his epilepsy diagnosis drama, asking for privacy until certain and then being totally up front. He played through injuries frequently, but it's injuries that have done in both Rolle and CMac as Ravens. Too much $ for what they have left, even w/ a pay cut. And add to CMac's baggage his poor attitude
Were not done at corner with just Foxworth. whose guaranteed money is supposed to come in part from CMac's & Rolle's salaries. They gave him a lot because we need alot of help at CB. I've not watched Foxworth, but I'll trust Ozzie at least as far as I did when he acquired Fabian Washington, who came around as a coverage corner by the end of the season (now if he'd stop aiming for shoe tops when open-field tackling!).
I bet Ozzie will draft one or more CBs. Depth at CB has been a big problem for the past 2 years

Needed CB taken care of, Scott gone, Lewis next, lets take another pass at Brown. Rolle was never out standing in B town. Lenard may be answer for Nickel? Most pressing now has to be center & inside LB... We need deep threat and help on end of OL Keep our draft choices they are the future. Dose anyone remember a guy named Edgerton Hartwell?
Posted by: ravenaway | February 27, 2009 6:46 PM
You have to remember what the Deangelo Hall and Asomugha contracts have done to the market for Cornerback, namely, mucked the whole thing up so that if you a starting corner in the league you gonna demand premium $. I agree almost 7 mil a year is a lot, but the ravens save 12 mil a year cutting rolle and MaCalister, so they have some flexablity. Also, who the heck else is out there besides McFadden from Pittsburgh and he is gonna probably get even more than Foxworth. We have two young fast corner that the new coaching staff likes as oppsoed to two old slower corner who thought they were too good to have to buy into the new system. Not great, but defiantly not terrible.
Posted by: lg | February 27, 2009 6:48 PM
AMEN MARK! I agree with you totally...people just dont understand football and they think Rolle is that bad and he was maybe our best corner last year when healthy. We need him back this year and I believe how secondary is solid with Reed, Landry, Zibby, Nakamura, Washington, Foxworth, and Walker. People just need to calm down and stop freaking out. There aren't that many solid cb's out there and we needed a cb bad so thats why ozzie signed foxworth. he will be a solid addition to this team. calm down people and let ozzie do his job.

You guys are funny. I guess you watch a lot more film of these guys than the pro personnel dept. for the Ravens.
I don't know why they pay anyone, they should just read the comments here to see who they should sign, who they should cut, and for how much. Think how much money they would save by canning the scouts they have that watch the pros...
Posted by: Dismayed | February 27, 2009 8:16 PM
Yeah, to answer from the post a few probably missed completely, I remeber Hartwell. I always wondered what happened to him. I really liked him but he seems to have disappeared! Anyone got info on him? But as for the whole cornerback situation I agree Rolle should have taken a paycut he is obviously playing hurt but then again he has a serious condition that could become worse ... I mean way worse so hes just protecting his future at this point. I guess it just matters how big the paycut was supposed to be, does anyone know? Out of CMAC and Rolle I would prefer to have Rolle to stay on and mentor the young ones. Its sad but I think he will be cut for no other reason than it's just business.

GPT posted at 5:48 that Ozzie "blew it" by missing out on Talib, Cromartie amd Mckelvin. They are all good corners from the first round last year but are you saying we shoulda drafted one of them over Flacco???? Really??
Posted by: Tony | February 27, 2009 8:43 PM
So far today it looks as if the Ravens will take quite a hit-Scott,Brown,Rolle,Leonard and possibly Lrwis.Five starters. How many will be replaced by the draft?I liked Foxworth when he played at Collrge Park, but they had better come up with some replacements
Posted by: Richard Davis | February 27, 2009 9:02 PM
Josh and Mark must be watching old game films from when Rolle was 26 years old. He is far too fragile. When he played opposite C-Mac he was picked on mercilessly, and due to injuries he was a mere shell of his former self. The Ravens primary weakness has been the deep ball for many years now. The formula is look off Ed Reed and throw at Rolle. Lets not get all misty eyed about his medical condition. Yeah he played tough, but he did not play 4 million dollars worth of tough.
The Ravens draft should be WR first then a CB. Unless a steal drops into the Ravens lap, as seems to happen pretty often.
Posted by: MR. Z | February 27, 2009 9:19 PM
Yeah I mean common Rolle was a slow corner. Everyone knew that. Even his hands were slow.
Ravens are trying to get Ray back here. Lets see what happens Monday. Still a strong team with him in there. Face it the guy still commands respect and he has a hell of a returning D-Line. Take your pick. Block Ray or Nagta or Gregg, but you can't block all three. They just need some health.
Ray understands the business, but he also wants to win, and Baltimore is 100 percent behind him. Think he wanted to see Rex leave? Now he has a bigger say, and he will not be getting paid for it.
Posted by: Petey | February 27, 2009 9:55 PM
Both of our corners now are fast and are solid cover guys. But neither can catch a football.
So there will be fewer opposition passes completed and fewer opposition passes intercepted.
Additionally, as a team, Washington/Foxworth is not nearly as good as a healthy McCallister/Rolle, but McCallister/Rolle has not been healthy in years.
The bottom line is that because of health and age - but not of talent - we are better off with the new guys.

Why is it that the Steelers never seem to have these problems. They are stacked with big name talent and yet they never have cap problems. As much as I hate the Steelers, they seem to never have a problem getting players to take pay cuts, when it means staying on the team.
I say good riddance, he got burned a lot last season and looked a little timid this season.

Don't lose Jim Leonhard; he's a gritty player with intangibles.
Posted by: Barry | February 28, 2009 1:02 AM
Sometimes a vet like Rolle wants to call his shots in negotiations and I guess he'll have to work a little harder to find a new team.I appreciated his effort despite his handicaps but his playing time rates a cut instead of a RAISE!That's my opinion as a fan, nothing personal.

He's finished here!!!
Posted by: Terry | February 28, 2009 8:14 AM
Foxworth was a little expensive but thats the market price for CB this year. Danny boy set the market with the Hall contract. Regarding Scott, I really wanted him to stay but at 29 he only had one payday left. He will play well under Ryan. I don't see him going the way of Hartwell and Thomas.
Posted by: George Samryk | February 28, 2009 8:24 AM
Foxworth is nice, but I love Frank Walker
Posted by: wes | February 28, 2009 9:42 AM
Dollarwise? This signing of Foxworth makes sense. If you haven't noticed the recent years' contracts........until Big Albert's contract, the CBs are the second highest paid NFL players.
I think you are seeing what Harbaugh wants on the field. He wants speedy corners with good ball skills.
I would expect the Ravens to land Alphonso Smith , Darius Butler or D.J. Moore with the #26 pick.
Michael Jenkins will probably end up being a NFL Safety.
Looks as though Ray will be staying by signing a $24M, 3 year deal. Guararanteed money is $17M.
I don't think anyone else , save for Denver, has the money or wants a 34 yearl old ( when the Season starts ) MLB .
I hope that the fans don't go blistering the guy. He sees big money contracts being signed and he wants what he thinks he is worth.
He unfortunately overpriced his current value. He's still the Defensive leader on this team. The reason the Jets went after Bart so hard, is that he's 6 years younger and he'll be the QB on Ryan's Defense.
I'll miss Bart and Jason, but we drafted Tavares Gooden and Chester may be moved to the Center position.
Still more 2nd tier moves to come.
We'll either pick up a Center or Draft one .

"Why is it that the Steelers never seem to have these problems. They are stacked with big name talent and yet they never have cap problems. As much as I hate the Steelers, they seem to never have a problem getting players to take pay cuts, when it means staying on the team."
The Steelers grow their talent from the draft and anyone worth keeping beyond their rookie contract are paid accordingly. The Steelers rarely sign big name free agents which is why they never appear to have cap issues.
Ozzie Newsome is taking a beating on several message boards but I like what he's doing so far. He played the Ray Lewis drama perfectly. Only Ray and his agent overvalued his worth. The same can be said for Jason Brown. Jason's only bite came from the Rams. What happened to the Dolphins, Redskins, and Jacksonville? I thought those teams would go into a bidding war for Jason's services. Once again, Ozzie knows best.
I also don't blame Ozzie for Bart's departure. Before off season started everyone counted Bart as the odd man out so I don't know why everyone is up in arms over the fact that he's gone. I think Bart was ready to leave Baltimore and Rex becoming a head coach made it the perfect storm for Bart to leave.
Ozzie's plan hasn't been laid out yet but I think we as fans need to patient and watch it unfold.
Re the Ravens new CB. If the Redskins are willing to pay DeAngelo Hall what he's making now, I think the Ravens got a steal.

Samari is a judgement call and you gotta make those. Losing Jason Brown is not good. The offensive line made solid strides this year.....he was key to the success. He can play two positions, is a vocal leader, thus too valuable player to lose.

Every time the RAVENS have good post season, Ozzie does something stupid with free agency drafting. Why did you let Bart Scott go? Ozzie made the same type of mistake back in 2000 when we won the superbowl and letting Dilfer go. He only helped us win the biggest sports event known to mankind. Our defense was fine, so why not keep it intact. Scott was an intricate reason to why we beat Tennessee and other elite teams. You should have kept him instead of Lewis. Once a person dis-respects an organization and their city like RAY did, he needs to go! C-YA Ray! Foxworth won't contribute as much as Scott! What were you thinking OZZIE? Watch the defense in 2009 slip from 2nd to 22nd because of you OZZIE! You gave HEAP his money why not SCOTT! I am so dissapointed, Also, watch the JETS win it all in 2 years especially if they acquire VICK. Finally, Rolle let him roll to another team even if its in our division. OZZIE so far has made a perfect recipe for a horrible season in 2009.

WE GOT RID OF BILLICK BECAUSE HE WAS TERRIBLE BUT WE KEPT HIS PARTENER /OZZIE PLEASE GET SOMEONE WITH MORE FOOTBALL SAVVY!!!THOSE OF YOU POSTING IN OZZIE WE TRUST/WELL YOU GOT IT.REMEMBER THIS THIS PAST YEAR WAS A FLUKE BECAUSE FLACCO WAS NOT GOING TO BE THE STARTER.OTHERWISE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN ANOTHER MEDIOCRE SEASON.BUT SINCE WE HAD A GOOD SEASON I GUESS ITS TIME FOR OZZIE TO STEP IN AND DO SOME MORE STUPID DEALING TO PUT US BACK TO MEDIOCRE YET AGAIN. RAVENS FAN BUT NOT AN OZZIE FAN OUT WITH OLD IN WITH NEW!!!
Posted by: Anonymous | February 28, 2009 5:14 PM
Mediocrity here we come. Why is it that the great genius guru Ozzie never sees the value in our own proven studs, like Scott and Leonhard, and Brown, but loves to throw money at nobodies like Foxworth? Seriously, you think he's worth that kind of money and Leonhard isn't? WHAT? The problem with Newsome, and now the Ravens will pay the price for it, is that he has bought into his own hype. He HAS to make the AMAZING pick-up. The AMAZING draft pick. He can't go with the sure thing. NOOOOOoo...he MUST find the guy nobody saw to continue to prove what a genius he is. Why didn't we make a run at a receiver. WHy not make a run at Dawkins? Why not sign Scott and Brown. Let Ray go. I thank him for the memories. But he is too full of himself. He spit in our faces with the "It would be an honor to wear the star on my helmet, it would be a dream come true". I have new for Mr. Lewis. It is an HONOR TO WEAR THE RAVEN ON YOUR HELMET. You know the Raven? The one that made you the highest paid linebacker ever on your last contract? The one that stood by you when you were in jail? The city that adored you? Instead of buying 2000 watches and building a room at your mansion to house them, save your money and don't piss it away!!! For every "dance" you have made in the last two years I've seen two plays where you were beaten around the corner or even run over. You are not worth the franchise sir. Anyway. Here we are again, losing more than we will gain. Training the stars for other teams again. Honestly, I'm about done with this team. Every time they get exciting, like last year, rather than take that last step, get that last piece or two, they blow it up and start over. Enough.

I don't understand why all the venom tword Ozz. Since the Browns arrived in Baltimore, (remember how bad they were) the Ozz has built a team that competes for a championship nearly ever year. Look at all the years of a great defense wasted because of Billick's inept offense. That wasn't Ozzies fault. Look at Billick for fault there.
Regarding Scott...the Ravens engaged in a bidding war with the Jets until Scott pulled the triger. I would of loved to keep Scott but he was considered odd man out with Lewis, Suggs on the FA menu so no real surprize there.
My real worry is next year. Hagata is a FA and based on the Haynsworth deal he is going to be expensive! Lock him up now and let Ray-Ray retire!
