Scott, Lewis vying for deal?
The Ravens and linebacker Bart Scott appear to be only $400,000 to $700,000 apart as far as completing a new deal.
Scott, though, isn't sure if he is competing with Ravens Pro Bowl linebacker Ray Lewis for a big contract.
Lewis, like Scott, will become a free agent tomorrow if he doesn't reach an agreement. The Ravens may be able to sign only one of the two, and might be pitting one against the other.

Comments
Give the mad backer and extra $500,000 per year to get the deal done and say bye bye to Ray Ray. Why a player would want to show a total disregard for loyalty by his Pro Bowl comments to a franchise that has shown him nothing but respect , is beyond me. I have no problem with football being a business and Ray trying to gauge what he is worth, but keep your mouth shut and conduct business behind closed doors. Stop playing games with the media and the Ravens organization. If you don't want to be here, then go and don't let the door hit you in the rear. Good luck adjusting to a new system, old man.

The Ravens need to sign Bart Scott, because all indications are that Ray is going to go to the Cowboys. Jerry Jones always bluffs the media on his free agency acquisitions. Plus he has his gag order in place. Jones flat out denied that he was interested in trading for Roy Williams and we saw what happened there. We can't lose both LBs and you know Rex is waiting to pounce on Scott.

Isn't that part of the negotiating process? Player Agents do that all the time to teams.., why wouldn't the team do the same thing in regard to player negotiations? This is the simple process of negotiating. Doesn't seem like they're too far apart, so I'm hoping Bart Scott can get locked in as a Raven.
Ray won't do anything until he can see that his market value isn't as high as he thinks it is.

No brainer, keep the good guy, let the thug go.
Posted by: scott | February 26, 2009 2:07 PM
Who really cares about Ray anymore? After this city stood by him after his "alleged killing" in ATL. I'm sick of the sports world, Ray has no business being in a town with such history as Jonny, Brooks and Cal.
See ya Ray!

Get it done. I was so discouraged to see the franchise tag applied to Suggs. In a perfect world, we sign Suggs trade him for Anquan Boldin, sign Scott and franchise Ray.

Please get Bart sign tonight!!....We need one of them sign by tonight!!....Then make the Jason Brown the highest paid O-lineman in the game it will be worth it in the long run!! Then get Lavernace Coles so we can have some consistency at receiver position to help Joe Flacco!!! Then work on T-Sizzle contract so we don't have to go through this next off season.

Living out of state I took a lot of grief defending Ray when he almost had his butt thrown in prison. He fortgets that people of Baltimore gave him the benefit of the doubt and have supported him no matter what. It just makes me sick how some of these guys fail to see what the "regular people" are going through now with layoffs, the economy, etc.

Ozzie: Will you sign Bart Scott already.
Posted by: Ben | February 26, 2009 4:48 PM
I'll take Bart Scott over the ingrate Ray Lewis 24/7/365. Any player who disses a team and city that stood by his side during a double murder trial is classless. And to those who defend him saying he was not convicted, well, if they don't see the seriousness in a plea bargain of obstruction of justice in a double murder trial, then they are all drinking purple kool aid. Go to Dallas Ray, please.

Being a relic left over from the great old Baltimore Colt days, I just can't grasp the game today. After such a exciting season and with great expectations for the comming season, many of the players want to leave. Mostly for money. They could care less for the game or the team. Most of them are already grossly overpaid, but that's not enough. I thank the Lord for being around to enjoy real sport with real sportsman. Not these bunch of over paid babies.
Posted by: Rich | February 26, 2009 4:53 PM
I understand everyones stance about Baltimores support for Ray during his dark days......but in Rays defense..We should have never let the face of our franchise get a sniff of the free agent market...You think Indy will ever let Peyton test the market? No of course not....Ray is just posturing for a deal, which is what NFL players MUST do because they dont have guaranteed contracts. Fans moral expectations of athletes is ALWAYS way too high. If it were my job and two companies were in a bidding war.....I wouldnt take a hometown discount...

let ray go , gooood by, sign scott (for rays spot) brown (keep the line together) leonard ( he brings a lot to the table safety-returner )
Posted by: al engelskirch | February 26, 2009 5:10 PM
We need Lewis! Please Ozzie don't let Lewis out into free agency or else were more likely to lose him. Don't leave us RAY! It'll be a miracle if we can keep Bart & Ray.
Posted by: A.J | February 26, 2009 5:33 PM
If Ray wants to leave the city that loves him and help make him what he is let him keep Bart.
Posted by: Herbert Jackson | February 26, 2009 5:35 PM
Hmmm, sign the younger player who has said "if it's close" he'll stay or the declining, aged star who says he dreams of playing for another team? Gee, let me think.
Posted by: Macadamia | February 26, 2009 5:38 PM
Sign Scott, one of them needs to stay or the D will really be screwed, Scott's a solid player and with him, and Suggs back the D will hold up well enough. I don't know what's going through Ray's head right now, hopefully he's in for a rude awakening on the market. I must say free agency has been hell for the Ravens so far.

In the end I trust Ozzie. Oz has a plan and he is right more than wrong. Love to have Ray, love to have Scott, LOVE to have Leohnard (not happening) but glad to have our front office.
This time tomorrow we have Scott locked-up and Ray and Jim go to NY...
Posted by: Jeff | February 26, 2009 6:11 PM
I think any of them can be replaced, I believe Suggs would have been missed the most. I would like to have seen them work on Brown then Lenard leaving LB’ers until last. Think we would have probably signed one of them, if not we have been flush with backups at LB for years (remember when Scott and AD were backups). For the draft we need a top WR and Shut down DB. I think a center will be the easiest to find, forget Chester he’s to small and gets pushed around. Find a TE that can do it all then trade Heap or one to block then get Heap back in the passing game.
Posted by: ravenaway | February 26, 2009 6:31 PM
How bout we sign Bart and see if we can pick up Dave Neal in the draft. That layout of a dookie has to be worth a contract!
Posted by: jay | February 26, 2009 6:40 PM
How much Money does one man need ? Careful Ray......The pursuit of money is suposed to be evil, and may perhaps... lead to Tragedy. So if .. as youve' said "It's in Gods Hands" We'll see ya at Training Camp !
Besides....Creating a Dynasty is more Important to the Fans of NFL then Looking Like a Greedy Trader bent on self Pride !
Right ?

Give Brown the money to protect Flacco and run the football. And he has a point when said the Ravens have kissed the D's butt way to long and rarely positions itself wisely during freeagency and drafts. Sign Suggs, Leonhard, And Scott. They should know the Defense well enough to know how to perform without Lewis. They need other components and it will not be cheap. Hopefully the negotiations with these players will not detract from signing the offense/defensive weapons we need to solidify the positions. Keep the money for those want to win a superbowl.

Ray, If your planning on going, your making a big mistake, dude. 'nuff said.
Posted by: Will A | February 26, 2009 8:14 PM
I say goodbye to Jason Brown. He was better at guard than center, anyway. His best game was probably the New England game in 2007 when we were carving up their rush defense. He was better next to JO in 2007 than next to Ben Grubbs in 2008.
All Ozzie wanted to do was make him the highest paid center in the NFL. What was wrong with that? He wanted to be paid for a position he wasn't going to play as long as we have Grubbs, Chester, and Yanda, three players picked ahead of him their draft years.
But what gets me is him complaining about not paying offensive players, and will always be a defensive team. How Stupid! Last I checked Cam Cameron was still the offensive coordinator and Rex Ryan was long gone. Sounds like the future we may be a better offensive team.
Goodbye, Jason. Enjoy your bidding war between Bill Parcells and Dan Snyder.

Ray, by far is the better move over Scott. Bart has had one good season yet Ray dominates year after year.
What's with these Ravens "fans" posting here? They have a terrible case of amnesia and are narrow-minded and way off base in bashing Ray.
Sign Ray now, Ozzie!
Posted by: Steve | February 26, 2009 9:12 PM
The Ray situation is tough. On one hand we have no one even close to being capable of replacing his leadership, intensity and enthusiasm. On the other hand, this team needs to prepare for the next decade under a superb head coach and superstar in the making QB. I would hate to see Ray go, he is my favorite all-time player, but I really wouldnt fault either party. Now, for all you fans who dismiss the greatest MLB to ever play football, you need a history lesson. With Ray leading the way, the Baltimore defense has produced several head coaches... Del Rio, Marvin, Nolan... they have all learned pretty hard that they aren't such geniuses without 52 calling out the offenses plays and being an all-time great leader. How have the "great" Jamie Sharper, Adalius Thomas or Ed Hartwell done when Ray wasn't standing next to them? Ray will never be replaced in Baltimore- and I'll take my first trip to Canton when he goes in to the Hall as a Raven... and I'll stand and cheer with some tears as all of you will when he becomes the greatest Raven ever added to the Ring of Honor (speaking of which with Ogden, Ray, Reed, etc up there can we take down the mediocre players who are up there now... but I digress)... This will be an extremely sad day for Ravens nation if we lose the greatest player in franchise history. I hope something gets done, but no matter what I love this team, believe in Harbaugh, Ozzie and Bisciotti and look forward to seeing this team develop into a Super Bowl champion... Thanks for the incredible memories Ray. See you in Canton.

John, I'm going to have to carry you.
Why do you call them 'overpaid babies', when neither of those terms applies? I'm sure most of these 'babies' you wouldn't insult like this to their face. Hiding behind the internet is cool, I guess.
'Overpaid???' You know so little of economics. They're not overpaid at all, any more than Jerry Seinfeld is (is he overpaid?). The players aren't the ones making the money. The owners are.
Do some math before embarrassing yourself. How many millions of people subscribe to the NFL Network? How many TOTAL fans went to a single NFL game this year? How many jerseys and Madden 09s did they buy (is John Madden overpaid? Do you know how much HE made last year, and didn't even make a tackle???)? How about hats? T-shirts?
You're talking billions, and billions, of dollars here. And for as much as I despise Ray Lewis (Go Steelers), he made $6 million last year. Much more than I'll ever make I'm sure, but I don't wake up in terrible pain Monday thru Thursday to 'entertain' people. It's not my full-time job 9 or 10 months a year.
And I don't contribute to my boss making tens of millions of dollars in annual revenue quite like Ray Lewis does. Like him or not, he sold out Ravens Stadium every time he entered it and admired thousands of 52 jerseys in the seats. Nobody'd pay to see you in a 70,000 seat stadium who isn't related to you.
So quit telling both your friends that athletes are overpaid. If they are, then stop putting money in their pockets and watch a movie. Wait, quite a few actors make millions of dollars for 5 months work, too. So don't do that, either.
Just start your car and take these guys to the airport. And be sure to remind these 'overpaid babies' why they shouldn't try to make what they do...

This one is easy. Bart Scott is just another Adalius Thomas. Meaning, he is replaceable. Ray Lewis is the only constant factor in the Ravens great defense. If we don't pay Ray, then our d goes with him. Good luck Flacco having score 27 points a game for us to even win. We will be 8-8 at best without Ray. Pay the player that gets you W's, that's all that matters

Hi, it is me,
It's Rich not John. I'll stand behind my remark. Everything you say is true and well known by everyone. Like I said I am a relic from the old Baltimore Colt days. If you lived through those golden sport years you would have a understanding of real men with values and community purpose. The fact is they got screwed big time by the NFL. When you see the old Baltimore Colts players on TV they don't complain about that, but rather you can see the pride they show of having played in a time where team, team mates, winning for you city, and the appriciation of the great fans that supported them. The Ravens had a unexpected good and exciting season and rather than hearing the player saying how much they are looking forward to next season to complete their journey to the superbowl, all we here is "I'M LEAVING FOR MORE MONEY". It' just not cool and really no sportsmenship. As far as your idiot statement of me hiding behind the internet. God that's funny. I use my real name and you use "it is me". go figure. I am not hiding from you or anybody else. What do you think Ray's going to shot me? I think you need a little more seasoning. When you grow up get back to me.
Posted by: Rich | February 27, 2009 9:02 AM
it is me,
Oh yeah one other thing. As far as your "both your friends" remark. Last night I was at a dinner with 30 or so people. It was a get together with people I work with in the summer months. 15 or so of the guys and their better 1/2's. I consider the 15 guys all to be friends, but 6 to 10 very good close friends I see all year long. Tomorrow I am going to a pancake breakfast for cancer. I'll be going with 2 neighbors and close friends.
The guy has a successful sports shop and has a local radio sports show every Friday. I blessed to have such good quality friends. I don't think I deserve them either, but the Lord has always blessed me with good friends all my life. I wish the same for you. You really should watch your words. They give away your character. Peace!

Hey Ray Lewis - I guess in God we trust, all others cash. So much for the loyalty we as a city and team gave you. You now spit on us in the media and to others. Be gone!
Posted by: Bob | February 27, 2009 1:34 PM
Rich,I tend to agree with you, that the players of today don't respect or understand what the Johnny U's and Art Donovans, etc, etc, went through to put this great sport on the map. Most of them worked another job in the offseason just to make ends meet, but would still take their time to be out in the community and would stop anywhere and sign autographs and chat sports with you.I had the pleasure to meet both Johnny U,and Brooks Robinson at normal everyday functions and remember Brooksie talking to me for over half an hour about baseball outside the old Equitable Bank at Hopkins Plaza.Met Johnny U twice and they were true gentlemen, ambassadors of the sport. The only current Raven I have actually met is Matt Stover and he is much the same way. This is all posturing and the agents like Boras, etc, are the leeches and parasites of the sports world. If Ray goes elsewhere,I'll still fondly remember his contributions to the Ravens, but I think he's in for a rude awakening if he thinks he'll have the same impact in another system on another team.If he's that good, why does Rex want Scott instead of Ray?Because he's younger and cheaper.Suggs has matured and earned my respect, signing Foxworth is a good move, and I'm pretty sure we have a lot of very good young linebackers just chomping at the bit,Greisen,Barnes,Burgess,MCClain,JJ,Bannon,we're more loaded at that position than any other on the team. And with Kelly Gregg back wouldn't surprise me if we run a hybrid 4-3 with Landry healthy, and Frank Walker, who really matured late in the season, and our two rookies,Zwibikowski and Nokimura producing as well,I think we'll be just fine.Out of all three I think signing Suggs was most important, and still think he gets a long term deal.Have a god time at the pancake breakfast Rich, and remember, most of the goons on here who spout off at the mouth, certainly wouldn't say it to my face or your face either.I still trust Ozzie,is he right all of the time? No,nobody is,is he right most of the time,Hell, yeah, that's good enough for me.
Posted by: Burt from Essex | February 27, 2009 2:08 PM
I'm with Rich on wishing things were still like the old days of the Colts and the Orioles of the past. A time when you didn't need a program to figure out who the players are due to them chasing the buck here and there every year. As fans we are expected to bleed team colors, cover our cars with stickers and flags. Our worlds to stop on Sundays to make time to watch our hometown hero's. After all of this weeks non-sense I feel that it could be over for me.I am still a big sports fan and will continue to watch sports but at different venues. You will find me at more local high school and college games. Maybe I will start coaching kids teams again, where love of the sport is at it's best. So next September look for me on the golf course not at M&T field.
