Ravens wise to look at ex-Steelers lineman
The Ravens are making a smart move in looking at Pittsburgh offensive tackle Marvel Smith.
Smith was slowed by injuries last season, but he could improve play at the tackle position, an area the Ravens definitely need to upgrade during the off season.
One of the reasons the Ravens' passing game suffered last season was that they had to keep tight ends and running backs in to chip block on defensive ends and outside linebackers.
There were numerous times when the Ravens sent out only two receivers. You can't beat a quality team like Pittsburgh with such a vanilla passing game.

This is a very wise move by the Ravens because Smith has always been a very fine offensive tackle who never got any recognition. I know he did a very solid and good job with Pittsburgh in his career, so for depth this would be an outstanding move really, especially since the contract should be relatively cheap because he was injured last year. I know people say we overpaid for Foxworth, but people say that all the time and the player does fine. Plus, we needed a corner pretty badly. I have a good feeling about him. I honestly hope that we do sign Smith as well because he's only 30, he'll be 31 once the season starts, but this will be a great move for the Ravens.

We need help at RT. But losing Jason Brown will hurt more than you think. His calls at center put his line mates in order and we will miss whatever leadership he had on the OL. That is where Willie Anderson should come in. Marvel Smith would likely be as a RT. I am not sold on Chris Chester as a center becuz his weight is too low to handle DL in the 3-4 defense.

I'll say again, I wish the Ravens would keep Leonhard. He may be on the small side, but he is all ball player. He has the instincts needed for the game.

Is Gaither developing or is Terry the problem child tacke? Which tackle position would Marvel play if we were to sign him? It seems like we have 400 tackles and no backup interior lineman.

Willie Anderson helped solidify the O-line with his veteran presence. Marvel Smith is another AFC North veteran who still can play and should be able to for another several years, and whose presence should help the young guys on the line. If the Wizard of Oz can land him, I can't see but that he'll help to improve the offense.

Yeah this isn't a bad move at all, they need depth at OT and if they can get him for cheap than that's a pretty good deal.

Hopefully he's not the next Keydrick Vincent. I would rather the Ravens look at Nate Washington or a similar WR (Lance Moore, Bryant Johnson). And how about a Center? Matt Birk as a two year placeholder?

Love the Foxworth signing. 2 young good CB's. Young O-Line, D-Line (except Pryce) LB's, QB, RB's. Safeties... We need WR's, FB (sign Neal for another year) It would be nice to have Ray for 2 years. But he can get hurt at any time. We need another veteran LB, and pass rusher to learn from Pryce. We are heading in the right direction. Ozzie must not give into Ray. Ray got greedy. People are being laid off left and right. 7 million dollars in this economy is like making 11 million 2 years ago!!!!
Ray Lewis deserves at best a two year deal for 7 million a year. We are building a nice nucleus of young players. "Tan Man" do NOT over pay Ray! The problem with this situation as i have said before is that the NFL needs to allow one veteran exemption to the cap. The Ravens would pay Ray if it wouldn't kill the future of the franchise. One veteran per team should only count 50% towards the cap so the "FACE" of every franchise can stay and retire. Good for team, the fans and the NFL. Jax lost Taylor and he should have retired a Jaguar. Every team has one player they would like to stay their entire career, however, the economics dont allow it. It's the NFL's issue to resolve.

Don't break the bank for Ray... he will be 34 and they have paid him a lot of money over the years. He is greedy and played it wrong. Spend that money on 2 younger players that will be here for the next 4 years. We need a pass rusher, WR, O-Lineman... Kicker who can kick into end zone!!! Bring back Leonard,Koch, and lets keep building on this nice foundation. Pay Ray 6 million a year for 2 years, and guarantee him a job as a coach making 3 million a year.
I like Foxworth signing a lot. I hope we can keep Rolle as well. He and Mason have played hard for us while hurt.
I would use Stypnowski at TE next year and Heap at WR!!!!

Harbaugh has a love for young players!
A friend of mine told me a few months ago that our Ravens were going to take a set-back compared to last year. 2010 is going to be a memorable season?!?!

Why havent the Ravens looked at TJ??

I don't think TJ has the Ravens on his list of teams he's interested in going to.

Please....Is this the same lineman who played on the same line that let Ben get smacked around like a rag doll? The same line that couldn't stop anyone? Let me get this straight...we don't want Brown, a young stud with tons of upside, but Marvel is the man? WHAT? We need one more purge. OZZIE MUST GO! I'm so sick of hearing of his GENIUS! We constantly let our studs go, and sign over priced losers. We constantly get a draft pick or two that are great, but does anyone not remember such great picks as....Kyle Boller? Chris Redman? Travis Taylor? Tavares Gooden? Dan Cody? For every Ogden, he's drafted 6 losers. Ravens formula = Put a good team together, have a good year, let your talent go elsewhere, reload, retrain , repeat process. I'm tired of being the developmental squad for everyone else. How do the Patriots keep their stars? How do they GET something all the time by trading them BEFORE their contract is up? Just to put this in perspective...We WANT Rolle, McGahee, but not Scott and Brown? We will pay Foxworth a ton of money, but Leonhard isn't worth it? HUH? ENOUGH...Mr. Bisciotti, you missed the last piece of house cleaning. You were smart to dump the great genius guru Billick. You forgot the great genius guru Ozzie.

Mike,
i always read what you have to say. I respect it. But man, you are really being tough on them. I always said back when Marchibroda was coaching that if the Ravens ever got to a playoff caliber, that I wouldn't give you guys much play. But, you guys mellowed a bit on "Bash the Ravens Sun". But, you can argue that teh Ravens are one of the top 10 franshises in the NFL. Maybe top 5. The never lose 2 years in a row. They have more success with draft picks than anyone probably. They have some bad luck with not getting everything together in 1 year but, man... You have been very tough on them this year.
Foxworth took less garaunteed money to come to Baltimore than the Falcons had offered. The Scouting Report is that Foxworth, entering his 5th season is ready to emerge as a top flight DB.
No one, and I mean no one, is giving creedance to the media in the Ray Lewis situation. Everyone is saying that some guy who doesn't even know Lewis called in to some radio show and made all these claims and the papers ran with it.
The ravens have won 35 games in the past 3 seasons. Chill man. Your being way to pessimistic. Foxworth is worth a little more as well being a hometown kid. I would rather have someone that wants to play here and tries very hard than a punk who doesn't respect coaches or himself. They obviously think that Dominique will fit better in their plans than any other corner. They had their pick.
no offense but, I go with Ozzie over you anyday when it comes to personnel decisions.

Smith is probably the best lineman on the Steelers O-line and that is not saying much (regarding the Steeler line not Smith). The Ravens can pick him up for a song since the Steelers don't resign players over 30. Look at Alan Fanaca...their best lineman and they let him go to the Jets.

Even though the Ravens had a vicious schedule last year, injuries and effects of fatigue caught up with them in the playoffs. That last drive that led to a Pittsburgh win showed that the Ravens defense was wiped at that point.
It's time for rebuilding the team with youth, either draft picks or early to mid career veterans. Roster depth is also key in addition to first-stringers for enduring an 18 game season.
Kudos to Jim H. and staff for getting the most mileage out of their players last season, especially with J. Flacco, who will be just as good, if not better that that Pittsburgh guy in the near future.

2 yrs, 2 back injuries. Think the Steelers don't know when a guy is done? I hope the Ravens check out damaged-goods Marvel S......
