Bye-bye Bart
It's all but official that inside linebacker Bart Scott is bolting Baltimore for the Jets and Rex Ryan. He has been offered a five-year deal worth $40 million by the Jets, and they're expected to announce the agreement shortly.
That may present Ray Lewis with some leverage in his talks with the Ravens. He certainly doesn't appear to have it elsewhere. It does present a problem if Lewis ultimately leaves.
Scott going to the Jets is fairly ironic. There was a point early in the season when Ryan was defending his decision not to blitz Scott as much as in the past. Scott was not making any plays in the backfield, only at the line of scrimmage when he met a running back.
Ryan will likely build his defense around Scott in New York, and the linebacker should have the attention he craved -- but couldn't quite get -- here.

Is it possible that Bart Scott just did not want to play in Baltimore anymore? Maybe he was using the Ravens to up his price with Jets. Who knows?
Anyhow, as a result of losing Bart Scott, I can't shake the feeling that the Ravens are stuck with Ray Lewis now. I hope the Ravens don't overpay him. I just have the feeling that RL will start to conveniently break down not long after he pockets his guaranteed money.

Don't sign Scott for $8M a year but sign Foxworth for $7M a year? Seems kinda of high for a nickle. He was so good the Broncos traded him last year for a 7th round pick. We just added depth nothing more. His speed is not as effective playing in AFC North. He had a decent year in ATL playing in the dome, and playing in the dome in NO, and nice Carolina and Florida weather.

The Ravens are a linebacker factory . I think there is lb depth on the current roster and I wouldn't be too worried about replacing Scott . I wonder how Scott will do there without the supporting cast he had here ( see Adalius Thomas N.E. ) .

This appears to be a classic case of out with the old and in with the new. C-Mac, Scott and probably Ivy will be past tense and players like Foxworth, Gooden and Jameel McClain will be new stars on the rise. I love change but one thing that won't change is the Baltimore Ravens; and they will be the Baltimore Ravens with or without any one individual including, well, you know...
Go Ravens! Even if some players won't "stay" Ravens!

Signing Foxworth and then cutting Rolle costs only a little of the cap space. Losing Brown and replacing with Chester costs nothing. If you sign Lewis at $7M, you still have $10M to get a top-notch, downfield threat. Or maybe sign Coles, making the Scott loss essentially a trade. Then use the 1st round pick on a linebacker and the 2nd pick on the player you will groom as a future center...and you are right back where you started.

While it is very disappointing to lose Bart Scott, it is far from the end of the world.
First of all, we lost Adalius Thomas a couple years back who was a much more versatile and dynamic player and the defense didn't skip a beat
I do agree with the sentiment that there may not be as much of a market for Ray Lewis, especially not for the amount of money and years he's asking and personally I'm glad. While he is older, he is still a leader, still a field general, and will still make tackles. This past season was his helathiest and most effective in recent memory.
Also, one other team with aging interior linebackers comes to mind. The New England Patriots. They have fared alright with the likes of Larry Izzo, Tedy Bruschi, and Junior Seau

things are not turning out quite the way I'd have hoped. No Rex Ryan, no Bart Scott and potentially no Ray Lewis. Do we even have the right to call ourselves the "dominant Raven D" anymore without these guys?

Don't jump the gun yet...Scott is waiting to see what the Ravens offer :)

I think Bart goes the way of Jamie Sharper in to relative obscurity as far being a dominant linebacker. He's no Ray Lewis and benefited mightily from the team around him and the schemes they used. The media hub of NYC had to appeal to him as much as anything too. He does have broadcasting mojo, but the spotlight burns mighty harsh and one has to be careful what they wish for. Of the big three up for grabs from our defense, he's the one I feared losing the least.
I hope we're not seeing some kind of collective passive - aggressive reaction from a bunch of guys who were one game away from the Super Bowl, where they all start feeling disrespected and jump ship in a huff. Likewise I hope Ozzie isn't screwing up by not being competitive when he really needs to be.

apparently the jets didnt see that pittsburgh tape when Mewelde Moore ran past Scott like he had on cement shoes...the NY media will fry Scott and Rexy.....sooner .....not later....I'm sure his wife will enjoy the shopping.....and I tried to tell all of you last year that Gholston was not going to dominate in the NFL.....I didnt know he would be absolutely invisible like he was against LSU in the championship game.

This is really upsetting that we may no longer have a great defense (and now with an unproven defensive coach [i don't think he deserves a coordinator title after a short stint in the nfl and with the Ravens]). I wonder if the defensive revolt is a result of having this no name guy get the job. I am also surprised at Jason Brown's reaction to staying with the Ravens. What's going on? Harbough did well with the identity of the Ravens already established. What type of identity does he have to bring? Harbough needs to respect what we have here! I will be surprised if we break 500.

I agree. Don't pay Ray more then 6-7
million. Different economy then years ago. We have a nice young nucleus. He will break down, he will be 34!!! Absurd to kill our cap. I rather pay that money to a younger LB, WR and pass rusher!
This is a team game... Bring Leonard, Koch and add pieces of the puzzle. Don't break the bank on Ray. He got greedy. Not the Ravens fault that he hasn't saved the 35million they have already paid him!
