Steelers' Ward to Charm City: 'I could care less'

Some notes from chilly, snow-covered Pittsburgh:

Hines Ward was smiling again today when asked about being voted the Most Hated Steeler in Baltimore.

"I guess it’s a great honor," Ward said beaming. "I don’t know why Baltimore dislikes me [so] much. I love the crab cakes there. I love the view in Baltimore. I’m a likable guy, I don’t know what there is not to like about me. I smile all the time and I give 110 percent every time I step on the field."

Then, Ward made it clear he wasn't particularly stung.

"But I could care less if they dislike me. As long as my teammates and the city of Pittsburgh know what I give each and every Sunday I step on that field. That’s all the really matters to me."

Ward also talked about how he enjoys getting on the Ravens' nerves and how he tries to break Baltimore's concentration. Ward is a tenacious blocker and he is occasionally criticized for taking cheap shots. Earlier in the season, he broke the jaw of Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers. Ward was not penalized on the play.

"You’re hearing the guys, ‘Oh you’re not going to break my jaw.’ Or you’re running around and they’re looking at you," Ward said referring to how he distracts the Ravens. "I kind of get a big smile on my face when I hear guys talking about that because they’re more worried about me than they are about stopping [running back] Willie Parker or trying to stop [tight end] Heath Miller and those guys.

"So I take pride in trying to get up under their skin because I guess they’re trying to knock the smile off my face. But to have that impact on the field ... they were trying to fight me, literally, rather than try to stop our offense from running plays. I’m just going to do whatever it takes to win ball games."

He really puts a lot of stock into his reputation with the Balt. fans but I have news for him-the players don't think the same way out on the field. It sounds like it's going to his head, now, but cheap shots are'nt forgotten and what goes around comes around in time.I know he's probably a decent fellow but his actions on the football field say something else sometimes. This is just another pre-game hyped story to make things sell columns.Watch when he grabs a facemask when the ref is'nt looking!

Hey Danny - check this out. Bart Scott was so worried about getting leveled by Hines that he ducked away from Hines and didn't make the tackle. Hine is in his head!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SXPbQfoP7o

You guys are pathetic. Trying to stir up a controversy by saying Hines could care less about Charm City. He said good things about your city. The fact is, the man beats your team on a regular basis, so you hate him. Admit it!

Im a huge Ravens fan and I really like Hines Ward. I think a lot of football fans like him. He is a very talented player. The fact that he tries to get in the other teams mind is just part of the game. We just see his smile...we dont hear what the other people say...as far as cheap shots, I think many players take cheap shots every game. Have we as Ravens fans taken a look at some of our players...like Suggs...how many late or questionable hits does he have a game? I am looking forward to a great game between these two teams. The third time is a charm...

Rick r u insane? Ben went into a slide which invokes a whistle and he was pulling up to avoid getting flagged for hitting her after the whistle or in a slide. Wines Hard takes the opportunity to blast Scott when he is pulling up and Scott ducks from the cheap shot. That's smart, not "in his head" distracted. Ward is a dirty player. He gets away with so many late hit cheap shots like the You Tube clip where he hits Ed Reed leading with the helmet and then taunts him afterwards, neither of which were flagged. Dude, what goes around comes around and I hope someone cleans his clock for a change b/c he is a punk and gets away with it. I would love to see Ray plow him into the ground like he did Winslow that forced a fumble that turned the game. That would be as good as the Ravens winning Sunday since the Steelers need the replay booth to win a game.

Hines is a punk. He can try to rationalize his cheap shots away, but there is no honor in hitting someone above the shoulders when they arent looking far from the play. Rivers broken jaw and Reeds nerve inpingement in his neck and the youtube video clearly show he aims high. Especially for a short guy. Keep your head on a swivel, i know i know. But protect your neck? thats not football, thats cheap. A real man tries to take the other player out witha crushing body blow, not a highly borderline illegal hit. im all for hard hits but not headshots. and Bart Scott isnt scared of Wards, he just knows he cant trust him to play with honor like a man. not that the Ravens are perfect, because a lot of the tacky dancing and thrusts are plain dumb, but Ward is without class. And most people here dont hate guys like Troy, Harrison and Big Ben. So no, its not the losses. Those guys are great players and are above stooping to Wards sad level. Right.

Hines Ward is an over-rated receiver and a cheap shot artist. His time will come, hopefully this Sunday.

Rick, that clip shows how agile and lightening quick Bart Scot is. Ward thought he was gonna catch Bart while he wasn't looking and missed. I can't wait to hear Ward cry during the interview after we beat these chumps on Sunday!

Bart Scott ducked before any whistle. If he hadn't he would have been laid out, and nothing cheap about it. That's football girls. He who hits hardest stays up. Suggs is a midddle of the road talent. He ducked.. so what? Ward is in his head there. You would duck too. Let's get on to the game...

Hines Wards hit on Keith Rivers of the Bungles was a legit legal hit!! The only reason that there was any contraversy was that the media took it and ran with it and the average fan bit on it and fed of that! If you ever played any organized football at any level...you would know the rules state that you can hit a player from the side as long as your helmet is in front of the player...and that is exactly what happened!! The only reason it recieved as much attention as it did was because Rivers got his jaw broke!! Bottom line, Rivers is a Professional athelete and should have been paying better attention to his surroundings (keep your head on a swivel)!!! Rivers didn't do that and he ultimatly paid the price!!

What's the matter with you people on this site. Learn the NFL Rules before you start spouting off. It is not illegal to hit a linebacker high. It is not illegal to hit a safety with your helmet. Those hits are only illegal on quarterbacks and defenseless receivers. Ravens players would kill to have Ward on their team. He'll clean someone's clock again on Sunday -- hard, nasty and legal, just like he always does. You might as well start making your excuses now. He's coming.

Hine(a)s! - Keep you head up, son. Big target on that stupid grin come Sunday when u get 8-6'ed!

I am pulling for the Ravens. These hits by Ward are legal. You can call them cheap, but again are Legal Hits. No complaining. This is Football. Not Tennis. The Ravens better cover these guys, and hit often. HARD!!! It's the only way they are going to win!!!

I think Ward better watch himself next year when they play the Bengals, I'm sure Keith Rivers will have no problem yanking him down by the facemask or horse collaring him, he won't think twice about commiting some kind of personal foul on Hines. As for the Ravens, I hope they get the chance to nail him.

C'mon fellas. Every team in the NFL would love to have Hines on their team. Especially the Ravens. He is a good receiver that gets the most out of his talent. He is also very physical when it comes to blocking. All anyone talks about are those big hits but watch him if you can on every run play. He is always doing the job. And as for the hit on Ed reed c'mon that was mid-play straight on, and he wasn't taunting right after he hit him he was calling for someone to come help Ed even while the play was going on. He's not overated either. He holds just about all the Steeler receiving records, a superbowl MVP, and will go down as the best blocker ever at the receiver position. A definite Hall of Fame career. Quit hatin on the man!

Why can't ravens fans see that ward just plays tough. and about the helmet first issue, try going back and watching the game when mendenhall had his arm broke and see for yourselves that it was ray lewis hitting him with the helmet first. just good solid football and may the best team win. I would like to say that I would root for Baltimore if they win but, in all honesty, I respect the ravens enough to hate them.

GO RAVENS! Hope they give the Steelers a good ol fashion beat down. However I have to say I would take Hines Ward on the Ravens long before T.O. I bet any Ravens fan at the end of the day, you ask any player on the Ravens and they would have him as a teammate just on the fact that he always plays hard. Quit whining about the cheap shots. If he was a Raven you would be defending him...And you know you would.

I dislike the guy wearing black and gold but I would have loved to see him wearing purple and black the last 10 years.

Hines Ward is a complete football player. He never takes a play off, like most receivers. He blocks somebody whenver he can, because he is never sure exactly which way his ball carriers are going. You gotta understand he isn't like the linemen who hold Harrison on every play. Those guys do this stuff at a very reduced speed and in a limited area. They hold and tackle Harrison at a reduced speed.

Now Ward? He's different. He works in the open field where there isn't much different between hitting your guy and missing him. Also, he can't control the body positioning of his opponent. But he can control whether the other guy will be able to make the tackle or not. If he hits him, the play that could be coming right up (or right over) won't get busted by the guy.

Ward is the forerunner of a new generation of receivers. They play every play, not a little pattycake and then watch the play go by. Receivers are supposed to be football players, not guys who run patterns and get involved in maybe 10 plays. From now on, linebackers and D-backs will have to worry about receivers hitting them instead of just knowing they can concentrate on the play developing. D-backs, especially, are headhunters. They like nothing better than separating a receiver's vertebrae. Now they will have something else to worry about. Hits by receivers who play every play.

Yes, at the speed these guys play, and with varying body positions during all these plays, sometimes it will result in bad hits. But one thing I don't want is to have Ward start taking plays off.

By the way, I saw the Titans game. There were some very nasty- I would say dirty- and late hits by Ravens players, especially Linebackers and Safeties. I don't mind that some of them will be looking for Hines Ward as well as concentrating on the ball carrier.

No dirty Ravens players. Right.

I love how Ravens fans call a player from another team dirty. If he hits you below the waste, thats dirty. If he blindsides you, thats a clean hit. Pay attention and it won't happen to you. Your "tough guy" defense is afraid of one of the smallest guys on the field.

Ward is a really good football player. He's not dirty or cheap but he IS a PUNK!

Hines Ward hits people high and when they aren't looking. That is not hard nosed football, it's cheap and classless. You can't call a helmet to helmet shot a clean block (it's illegal). It is the same principal as a defenseless receiver and applies whether you have the ball or not. That should be a penalty which is why the League made a special visit to Squeeler headquarters to address it. Everything comes around...

Juding by some of the comments left on here, it looks like Cleveland fans did move to Baltimore after the great Exodus. Calling Hines Ward overrated is pretty laughable and pretty uninformed on the part of the speaker. It's also ridiculous to call Steelers a cheap-shot team when the Ravens are twice as bad and known for far more worse hits than the Steelers. Oh, and you have felons on your team. That's classy. When you lose in Pittsburgh, you can go back to the Prison League.

Could Hines also "care less" about correct English? Mr. Ward, that would be "couldn't care less." Guess he's been in Pittsburgh too long.

Wines Hard - that is classic - I sense a t-shirt. I think Ward plays hard and is probably one of the smartest guys in the league. I think that he probably gets more attention from Baltimore because our players have pretty big egos and when you get lit up by someone that is Ward's size, it gets to them. That said, the hit on Reed, Jarret Johnson in the 1st game, and the one in the utube video, are after the play. The play is literally over. The play when he took out Rivers, was over. Rivers had slowed down because the play had past him. But, I have seen Ward get absolutely blasted. He goes over the middle a little less often than he used to and he's been getting up a little slower than he used to. I say Ward's number is gonna get called before he knows it. He is a very smart, skilled, and I would love to have Ward on my team, but he should smile less, talk less and play more. This is going to be a battle royal. I can't wait!

We all know that if Hines Ward played for the Ravens.Baltimore fans would love him and his style of play. Its easy to hate someone when they always beat you beloved Ravens. This week will be no different

John issac you are truly an idiot, The steeler do not need the replay booth to win games, do you forget we still would have had a 4th and goal at the inch line for the win or certainly a field goal for the tie, without turnovers The Ravens lose most games, that's what you need to win, not being a better team like the steelers, quit crying, good luck your going to need it, you guys are not as good as you think, check out ESPN. com and other national unbiased media, nobody is picking you to win. Hines Ward plays the game and earns his paycheck unlike most the NFL's primadonna receivers.

Hines Ward, over-rated??? Whens the last time a Ravens receiver made it to the Pro Bowl? Whens the last time a Ravens receiver was named Super Bowl MVP? It won't be happening this year either. Just face it, you'd love it if he were on the Ravens.

Hines Who???

What team does he play on????

Is he like the ketchup guy???

I am going to be at the game Sunday, so I can see the beat down first hand, that we are going to put on your loud mouth thugs!

The game will appear close early, but the Steelers will be in control and pull away later in the game.

First of all, Hines Ward has proven that he is just plain stupid. If he could care less that Baltimore hates him, it necessarily means he does care. Hines needs to work on his language skills. I think he meant that he could NOT care less. Second, I'm looking forward to seeing HW carted off the field after a career ending acl tear. Go Ravens!

Go the Ravens!!

Hines Ward is a football player, pure & simple. As a player, the best way to beat him it to shut up and play the game. No doubt about it, Ward is an itch...but let me ask you this, would you want a player like him on you side?

I say to the Ravens, don't waste your time with anything other than winning this battle, this football game. Anything else, like chasing Ward to "punish" him for transgressions, perceived or otherwise, is a waste of valuable energy.

Hines is the best blocking WR in NFL history and the Ravens would sign him in a heart beat, he is not the best WR, but he is the most complete one in the NFL and thats why everyone hates the man, but give credit where its due, I mean would you take Hines or T.O. or Ochio. I think every team in the NFL takes Hines if they had the chance.

Do they have Blogs in Pittsburgh ? Seems like Steelers fans rather more interested in Ravens than their home team judging by all those Steelers posters .
Maybe they couldnt afford Blogs features in Pittsburgh .

Allen
They musn't have a blog in the 'burg', since all of the squeeler cry babies have to come here to espouse the virtue of wines hard. They should be focusing on big ben's new (or imagined) ailments, which will lose them the game.

Ward is an excellent football player who ruins it all by his totally uncallef for cheap shots, dirty hits and smirking. I would love nothing more than to see him carted off the field unconsious after getting a blind side shot like he loves to dish out. That is probably the only thing that will ever cure him of his cheap shots.

NO HONOR! Cheap shots are for guerilla warfare. His hit on Ed Reed is clearly a hit only a punk would make. Judt because he isnt soft like most wideouts in the nfl doesnt mean he should be praised for some of the hits he makes. I really dont care about blindside body shots, piling on and all manners of dirty play, but when you go for someones head or neck its just like low blows, eye gouging, or punchiing someones faces in the pile. Its cowardly, dishonorable, and very dangerous. Ward had been flirting with the line but he really pushed it this year and the visit by the commish was a direct response to that. Anyways, whats the fun or merrit in winning dirty or trying to disable someone? Head shots can have severe results, thats why they arent allowed. Wards hits were either missed by the refs, they dont care, or his craftiness fooled them into believing they werent malicious. He is tough, sly, focused, intelligent, fearless, and usually productive. He does finish plays, which is to be applauded He also took a really cheap shot on Ed Reed, which is visually obvious on tape . This has been magnified by his penchant for playing hard at all times and occassionaly picking a guy off. Its usually clean. but the hit on Reed was uncalled for. Period. I respect what that organization represents, but not those who defend that hit. I dont know if it was malicious and planned, a moment of poor judement on his part, or even if it was intentionally that high, but it was a dangerous helmet to helmet neck injury causing hit on an unsuspecting player (who is one of the nicest, classiest. down to earth athletes the nfl has ever seen) and Ward almost ended his career on a headshot. Thats why there is so much venom spewed his way. Same as Porter was hated, especially for his hit on an obviously injured heap on an obvious qb spike. Although nothing was ever obvious with brian billick. We better not lose, i cant stand all these punk Baltimore Steeler fans. Only talk trash or show up in public after your wins. At least the fans from Pittsburh talk trash before the game. Thats who we hate: Porter, Ward, and pitt fans in bmore.

As a ravens fan, that is probably the lamest and most irrelevant poll ever asked. Its silly and serves no purpose, considering he doesn't run his mouth and plays 'Ravens' football. Why would you then ask for a comment regarding the poll's results to the aformentioned player? Like Ward said, 'Who cares.'

amazing how every hit HW has put up is a cheap shot all the way back to midget league....it's all whining since there has only been one superbowl in browns/ravens organization history.. steelers soon to be 6........ you'd all love him on the browns/ravens........

Ive read all your comments about hienz ward and laughed at all of them you sissies think it was an illegal and cheap shot he put on reed, but if you knew anything at all about rules his helmet was in front of him when he threw the block. Now the big question is really where was Ray Lewis the night Joey Porter got shot? lol . I sure am glad your Ravens dont play as bad football as you so called fans cry.

I have no problem with the hits. Except the Rivers hit, he led with his helmet there which is illegal. thats just plain dangerous and could have ended a guys career. The reason I don't like him is his reactions. He thinks he's hot doodoo for laying these guys out, but heck, I could lay them out like that too if they didn't see me coming. Hitting a guy when he's not looking doesn't make you tough. If you watch him play he avoids as much contact as he can when its a straight forward play. Watch today, I bet there will be three or four times when he makes a catch and jumps out of bounds instead trying to get the tough yards. He gets way too much credit than he deserves. I'll take Derrik Mason over Ward any day of the week. Do you think Ward would play with one arm like Mason has. Highly doubtful.

John Issac you are the biggest chick in the land if you think the Ward hit on Ed "the Playmaker" Reed was cheap. They were running right at each other, Ward saw his opportunity (with a ball carrier behind him) and Laid. Him. Out. Reed isn't a hitter -never has been. He's a centerfielder and probably the best at what he does in that regard. When he steps onto the field in Pittsburgh, he better know the Steelers come to play. Plain and simple, all of you Baltimore fans are a bunch of crybaby whiners when its your player on the receiving end. All season long you refer to that gutter, loudmouth smack talk of "what's my name, what's my name?" Well guess what --my name is the Pittsburgh Steelers, ladies, and we're going for number 6.

Are you guys kidding me. I am tired you ravens saying Ward takes cheap shots because they weren't looking. I guess Ed Reed should wait till a receiver catches the ball and turns around to see him before he tries to hit the reciever so hard to dislodge the ball. Its football. If you ever played the game, you would have done the same thing. You guys call Ward Classless but in the same sentence you say you can't wait to see Ward get carted off. Any person with any kind of morals would not want to see that. When your running back got drilled by Ryan Clark, as a Steeler fan, I even said, I hope he is ok.

Cheapest shots in the league come from the ravens. Pittsburgh completely owned your team this year and all your whining just smacks of sour purple grapes. The fact that you have such rancorous feelings toward a player of Hines Ward ability shows you dont appreicate good aggressive ball. Rivers jaw was broke by his own knee. watch the video. Ed reed wasnt paying attention and paid for it. Just like Ivy last week on the hit by sweed. While we go for six you can fill you D coordinator spot and worry about ray jumping ship for his big payday. Enjoy the big game. I know I will.

I can give you a straight answer as to why Baltimore hates him so much: he's a good player.

He thinks we don't like him because of the person he is OFF the field. We don't like him because he's so good ON the field, plain and simple. Honestly, if he was on another team, I could like him. But he's not, so I can't.

Hines Ward is just a very talented receiver who just happens to be a great blocker. The block he put on Keith Rivers of the Bengals was just a excellent block. If you playing the game you love so much, play it at your best. Football is a contact sport played at full speed. Big difference between college and NFL as far as the intensity. You have alot more at stake as far as the NFL. The better you play, the more money and longetivity you will have, especially when it comes to taking care of your family

Hines is not a punk. Anyone who listens to his radio show knows he's just a happy go-lucky guy. He also happens to be a great wide receiver and tends to rip the Ravens apart every time they play. People that claim he's a punk and he plays dirty are just ignorant, plain and simple.

Maybe if the Ravens can win a little more with the talent they have, the fans would stop complaining so much.
