Browns remain clueless by passing on Ryan
There are times when Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan should be happy that he can't get a head coaching job, like when the Cleveland Browns or Oakland Raiders are in the market for a head coach.
The Browns hired Eric Mangini as their new head coach without even giving Ryan an interview. How stupid are the Browns? Here is their chance to take away a major weapon from a team in their own division, and they can't wait a week to give Ryan an interview.
Maybe Mangini is the answer for the Browns, but he certainly wasn't that impressive during his three-year run as the head coach of the Jets. Ravens fans should be delighted Cleveland is in the AFC North with the Ravens. As long as they keep making clueless decisions, the Browns will never catch the Ravens.
How can you not give one of the best defensive coordinators in your division, in the NFL, an interview?

Comments
OK I agree and hope Rex never leaves and the Ravens give him an exclusive contract as highest paid defensive coord. and asst. head coach..I know the deal, always wanting to be a head coach but Rex look at the reality, good city good team and OK if e does go...then how about brining back Mike Nolan as d coordinator..IF Rex leaves..

Mike, what's up with the "give him a week" reference? Maybe they didn't want to wait four week?
Posted by: Eric | January 8, 2009 1:30 PM
That's what happens when you hire a coach before a GM.
Posted by: RickMD | January 8, 2009 1:39 PM
"...can't wait a week to give Ryan an interview."
A week? Mike, what are you saying here? What would have to happen for Rex to be interviewed in a week? You know the answer.
Posted by: Alex | January 8, 2009 1:43 PM
"How can you not give one of the best defensive coordinators in your division, in the NFL, an interview? "
Because defensive coordinators don't always make the best head coaches.
Posted by: Joe | January 8, 2009 1:52 PM
Did the Browns violate the Rooney Rule? Who else did they interview?
Posted by: Dominic K | January 8, 2009 1:56 PM
Mike,
I heard somewhere that Rex & Rob Ryan are overlooked because owners think that their coaching style will be identical to Buddys style.
I think that theory is flawed because of the owners weren't around back when Buddy coached. I just think that Rex doesn't get enough credit, I believe people think it's the talent of the players and it's a gimmick defense. People aren't smart enough to see the big picture and how complex this defense is to design & implement.
Clevelands loss is certainly our gain.

Puhhhhlease don't act like the Ravens are THAT far ahead of the Browns... the Ravens barely made it into the playoffs this year and probably won't get past Tennessee, much less Pittsburgh. So, don't get ahead of yourselves, Ravens fans... you, too Mikey.
Cleveland Brown Girl
Posted by: Cleveland Brown Girl | January 8, 2009 2:04 PM
Is Cleveland Stains girl serious? The Browns have had a horrendous track record from the day of their re-birth in 99'. Usually about once a year I agree w/ you Mike, and this is that one time. I'm glad that they are in our division.... as well as the Bengals. Also, their QB of the future is not gonna be that good.
Posted by: Jason | January 8, 2009 2:14 PM
Mike, Your comment makes sense, regardless of what "Cleveland Brown Girl" has to say.
Regarding her comments about the Ravens, let's see.....the Clowns have had how many winning seasons since 1999? They've gone to the playoffs how many times?
If I were Randy Lerner, I'd snap up Rex and George K., and data mine everything they know and apply in Cleveland.
There's a reason the Browns are the Clowns.
Posted by: Fran | January 8, 2009 2:16 PM
I think the Browns made a great hire and are going to steal away Ozzie's right hand man Kokinis. Rex Ryan is a great Def Cooridinator, but he is kind of a slob. How could an owner take him seriously if he can't even take care of his eating addiction?
Posted by: RayLewisforPrez | January 8, 2009 2:23 PM
Get back in the kitchen where you belong Cleveland Brown Girl. One what is a Brown fan doing reading the Baltimore newspaper? Jealous, maybe. Two, Did you watch the two games the Ravens played the Browns this year? Ravens had 7 more wins than the Browns. 11 - 5 in any other season does not "barely" get you into the playoffs. Despite being a 6 seed we were two game from being a 1 seed. A win against Tenn and Pitt gets us the 1 seed. Think about how close those games were. One or two plays from being a number seed. Unlike the Browns who were nine games from the 1 seed. Now go make me some pie and stick to knitting.

Hey CB girl,
If the Browns feel the same as you do then that would certainly explain their dismal record. And I feel much better about our division now. Here's a refresher for you. In the last ten years the Ravens are 91-69 and 6-3 in the playoffs with a SB win. Cleveland in the last 10 years is 54-106 and 0-1 in the playoffs. Not really that close after all.
Posted by: Jay | January 8, 2009 2:30 PM
Cleveland Brown Girl,
And the last time your beloved Browns, Version 2 went to the playoffs?
Not to mention Version 1?
Quick question: name the last Browns coach with a winning record.
It doesn't matter how you get to the dance, just as long as you've got rhythm.
Posted by: Gunpowder Chronicle | January 8, 2009 2:31 PM
In response to Cleveland Brown Girl:
Since 1999, the year the Browns left Cleveland, the Browns have had two .500 or better seasons making the playoffs only once. In fact, in that span, they had 7 (out of 10) seasons with 10 or more losses.
The Ravens, in that same span, the Ravens have only had 2 sub .500 years, with 5 seasons with 10 or more wins. Of those 5 seasons, they made the playoffs each and every time (that's 5 playoff appearances in 10 years).
There is something the Raven's have the Browns don't, maybe you've heard of it before, a Super Bowl win, too.
Have the Browns ever won a Super Bowl?
I'd say the Ravens are leaps and bounds ahead of the Browns. I rest my case.
Posted by: Matt | January 8, 2009 2:35 PM
Cleveland Brown Girl just answered the question Mike. Cleveland folks are just clueless in general. Lerner is a Cleveland folk.
Not 1 appearence in the playoffs since Lerner bought the new team and we're not THAT far ahead. Unreal.
Posted by: GT | January 8, 2009 2:46 PM
umm browns won only 4 games this year Ravens won 11. crennel fired, ryan have the the second rank defense. who living in fantsy now cleveland brown girl

Hey Cleveland girl, anytime you lose to the "bungles" who are by far the better of the two NFL OHIO teams, outside of Ohio State, don't get too high on your little horsey...All I heard last year going into this past season was, "were going deep into the playoffs and will win the division easily"..Before you open up that cleveland trap of yours, make sure you know what your talking about...Hon....
Posted by: Bmomike | January 8, 2009 2:51 PM
No Rooney Rule violation. They interviewed their def coord, Tucker. I am lifelong Browns fan, but really disappointed. Would have liked to have seen Ryan, Spag, Schwarts, or at least an interview with Shanahan. We now have Rob Ryan as D-Cord, but still. Not a fan of this hire (mangini)
Posted by: Remote Browns Fan | January 8, 2009 2:53 PM
Cleveland Brown Girl: Maybe they won't get past Tenn. or Pitt., but the Ravens are far enough ahead of the Browns to have at least earned a shot to try.
What's your team doing this weekend?
Posted by: brstevens | January 8, 2009 2:54 PM
Alex--Asst coaches still in the playoffs can interview during the week off before the Super Bowl.
Posted by: Wes M | January 8, 2009 2:58 PM
So is anyone else going to the game? I'm fired up!
Posted by: Kyle | January 8, 2009 2:59 PM
"Not that far ahead"? 7 games in the standings not enough for you, Cleveland Brown Girl? It would be more, but there were only two Browns-Ravens games scheduled.
(Nice shot at Mike, though.)
Rex can still interview if the Ravens are alive in the playoffs. Teams can interview an assistant from a live team ONCE, until that team's season ends. I think the Ravens have given permission for Rex to talk to someone Sunday, I forget which team.
Posted by: Jim | January 8, 2009 3:00 PM
Regardless of record, the Ravens will always be light-years ahead of the Browns due to their management, ownership, and football decisions. We have a bad year, then we are back in the playoffs...how many playoffs have the Browns been in the last few years...not as many as the Ravens. And it starts at the top, not just with the players on the field.
Posted by: Wow V.2 | January 8, 2009 3:00 PM
SHUT UP!
I would like to keep Rex Ryan here as the Ravens DC, so could make up some crap about how awful he is?
This shouldn't be hard for Mike Preston, I still remember what he said about the Ravens on Washington Post Live on Comcast during the pre-season. Nice prediction that the Ravens have a long way to go before we can even think about them being in the playoffs Mike.
Posted by: StrangeBru | January 8, 2009 3:08 PM
rex is going to interview on sunday with the rams - whether or not the ravens win. so while the distinguished mr. preston loves to take shots at the ravens this in fact is not one. he is just saying that he could not have interviewed so close to this game.
Posted by: pv | January 8, 2009 3:12 PM
Cleveland Brown Girl just so you know the Ravens barely made the playoffs with an 11-5 record this year and the Browns barely missed the playoffs with a 10-6 record last year.
The biggest difference is the Ravens have a legitimate shot at the Super Bowl this year, when is the last time the Browns could say that?
Posted by: StrangeBru | January 8, 2009 3:12 PM
Hey Clevland Brown Girl, I love your spunk! 11 wins usually wins a division in most years. The Ravens did not bearly make the playoffs...they won out to get in and not backed in like the Eagles.
Posted by: George Samryk | January 8, 2009 3:14 PM
It was reported that the Brown's owner wanted an experienced Head Coach. If that's the case then Ryan wouldn't have been in the running anyway.
Posted by: MoRich | January 8, 2009 3:15 PM
I am sorry, but the defense in B-more is cause of the talent, Lewis, Reed, Suggs etc. etc.
Let me remind you the Defensive coach for your Super Bowl win is now coaching the Bengals... Ryan is more of the same... When you have players like Reed and Suggs, the coaching takes second seat...
Don't get me wrong as a Browns fan I am not thrilled about Mangini, but Rex... you can keep him...
Posted by: Dawg Pound Fan | January 8, 2009 3:16 PM
Hey barely making the playoffs (and winning one playoff game - so far) is better than just missing the playoffs with a 10-6 record ala Browns '07 season.
Back on topic.
I'm glad the Browns didn't interview Rex Ryan. If Rex wants to be a head coach than I prefer he land a job outside the AFC North.
Posted by: Baltimore Ravens Fan | January 8, 2009 3:18 PM
Fred--you are kidding about bringing back Nolan, aren't you? The Ravens were the ultimate bend but don't break under his regime. I found them least impressive under all the coordinators we have had. CB Girl--you're so bitter and clueless--yeah, they BARELY made it into the playoffs b/c they were competing with Indy, Patriots, and the vanquished Dolphins all with records of 11 wins or better. The Browns BARELY missed being last in the league, and are only so fortunate that the Bengals are more inept. Bring Back Marvin Lewis if Ryan leaves--how Marvin still has a job is beyond me....
Posted by: Not Johnny U | January 8, 2009 3:22 PM
Would everyone chill out. Rex Ryan is allegedly conducting interviews on Sunday regardless of Saturday's result.
Posted by: Mr. Deez | January 8, 2009 3:31 PM
It's funny that the Ravens feel sooooo far ahead of most of the League when most of the big names on their defense will be going into free agency this off-season. Let's see how well this team does taking a blow like that before we annoint them as an elite team.
Posted by: John A | January 8, 2009 3:31 PM

Your comments show how ridiculous the mindset of the whole Browns organization really is. Trust me, I know terrible organizations when I see them, just look over on Eutaw St.
Posted by: Mark | January 8, 2009 3:36 PM
Didn't the Browns raid the Ravens cupboard a few years back for a guy named Savage? And how did that work out?
It doesn't look like a whole lot of teams are beating a path to Baltimore to steal from their staff. Gotta be a reason!
Posted by: danf | January 8, 2009 3:36 PM
How are we not THAT far ahead of the Browns? Yea we barely made into the playoffs with 11 wins in the regular season. Two of those wins came from the Browns so thanks. The Ravens are light years ahead of the Browns and I fail to see how you could argue otherwise.

PUHleeze....The Brown stains are not in the same universe as the Model NFL team Ravens are. What is in the water in Cleveland, must be high mercury levels or something because you people do not have enough brain cells to recognise greatness. Go Ravens!!

Posted by: Light Years | January 8, 2009 4:07 PM
good point Ryan97....would have liked a lengthier search though.
Ravens fans knocking the browns seem to forget their only superbowl team was built in cleveland by bill belichik, and the only reason they are in b-more is due to a fat greedy owner who wanted a new stadium paid for.
Posted by: Jweev | January 8, 2009 4:10 PM
Didnt the Ravens interview Ryan last year for their head coach opening? Why didnt they hire him. Seems like not hiring Ryan as the HC worked out for the Ravens.
Posted by: Drock | January 8, 2009 4:37 PM
Lerner has implied that they will not hire a coach that doesn't have head coaching experience this time. I don't think it's anything against Rex, I just think Lerner's position was they tried to do the "take the best Defensive Coordinator" approach in Crennel and we all know where that got them. I'm not necessarily sold on Mangini, but I am starting to think it is the right move at this time.
Posted by: Paul | January 8, 2009 4:39 PM
The Browns didn't want Rex because it appears they're close to signing his twin brother for the Defensive Coordinator position.
Posted by: AP | January 8, 2009 4:46 PM
Light Years...the majority of (and all of the stars) on the Ravens' Super Bowl team only set foot in Cleveland twice a season. Ray Lewis, Chris McCallister, Jonathan Ogden, Jamal Lewis, Brandon Stokley, Trent Dilfer, Sam Adams, Tony Siragusa, Peter Boulware, Jamie Sharper, Ed Mulitalo, Mike McCrary, Jeff Mitchell, Qadry Ismail, Shannon Sharpe, Duane Starks...none ever played a down for Belicheck.
If telling yourselves that Super Bowl team was built in Cleveland by Bill Belicheck is what Browns fans really believe, then the "best fans in the NFL" moniker is as much a farce as we here in Baltimore have come to witness.
It's neat how Cleveland fans dress up like empty seats to start the 2nd half of every game. That's really got to motivate the players while they nurse their staph infections.
Posted by: Tread Lightly | January 8, 2009 4:47 PM
hey danf, didn't Baltimore raid Cleveland for a football team a few years back? So technically you guys are riding on Cleveland's coattails anyhow...

Posted by: Dman | January 8, 2009 4:57 PM
Only the owner can give reason as to why Rex Ryan wasn't hired as the Ravens HC.
I hope Rex Ryan gets his chance to be a HC next season - he deserves it. And if he isn't offered a HC job - don't worry your little heads off Browns fans - he'll be back as DC to wreak havoc on the rest of the Ravens AFC North foes.
And one last thing: Rob Ryan is no Rex Ryan. Good luck with that.

Gotta chime in here...............
Jweev,
If you know your football history, more than 90% of Belichick's original Browns were gone by the time the Ravens won the SB.
Note to poster(s): please bring it with facts!!!!!!! Not BS!
Posted by: Eastside Jim | January 8, 2009 5:07 PM
Jweev - care to explain what Belichik had to do with the Raven's SB win? You realize it came four years after the Browns move to Baltimore.
As much as you like to blame Modell for moving the team, as much blame belongs to the city of Cleveland for not doing what they could to keep the team and the NFL for deciding to expand in Charlotte and Jacksonville instead of Baltimore. If Tagliabue had put an expansion team in Baltimore, where would the Browns have moved to? Houston? Doubtfully.
Posted by: Dominic K | January 8, 2009 5:24 PM
Jweev needs a history lesson!! There were only a handful of players from cleveland still on the ravens in 2000. Ray Lewis, Jonathon Ogden, Peter Boulware, Jermaine Lewis, Jamal Lewis, Jamie Sharper, Chris McAlister.... all came after Belichik and were drafter by Ozzie Newsome!! Belichick gets zero credit for the Ravens Super Bowl run
Posted by: grant | January 8, 2009 5:24 PM
Remote Browns Fan, Thanks, Re: Rooney Rule. It just seemed like they hired Mangini so fast that they didn't even have time to interview anyone else.
I don't think it was the greatest move, but I think we will have to see. I didn't really understand why Mangini was fired by the NYJ to begin with.
Posted by: Dominic K | January 8, 2009 5:26 PM
You Ravens fans are a real joke. Everything you know and have originated in Cleveland...Ogden, Lewis, Ozzie...the basis of your success. The Browns gift wrapped your 2 victories and please don't forget Cleveland stomping you twice last year. Rex Ryan?...why didn't you hire him. When the great Ray Lewis (got to respect him) retires, it's over for you chumps.

You Ratbird fans are morons. The bottom line was Randy Lerner did not want another untested coordinator to go through on the job training as HC. Besides, Mangenious is talking to Rex's brother about the DC job anyway.
Let see how you morons perform next year. And say goodbye to the playoffs this weekend cuz you're gonna be one and DUN!!

original-
ogden and lewis were both Ravens draft picks. Personnel carried over, it happens.
According to your logic, Peyton Manning is currently the best QB in Baltimore and the city has 2 super bowl wins in the past decade.
Posted by: Hans | January 8, 2009 6:47 PM
Since people bring up the Ravens Super Bowl victory and that is in the past, the past is now fair game. So, Browns - 8 Titles. 4 in the AAFC, 4 in the NFL, including their 1st year in the NFL. Browns played in the NFL or AAFC title game every year from '46 to '55 and again in '57. It just wasn't called the Super Bowl, which is nothing but a flashy title and a marketing gimmick since the game is still considered the NFL Championship. So pound your chests when the Ravens have done that. Or when they have done what the Steelers or 49ers or Patriots or Dolphins or 'Skins or Raiders have done. Those teams, along with the Browns, have been dynasties during various eras of the NFL. Some of you act like the Ravens are a dynasty now. Give me a break. All credit to the Ravens this year, they swept the Browns. Browns swept them last year. Don't lose sight of that, Ravens fans. In the NFL your fortunes can change rather quickly. This year, the Browns are evidence of that on the downside, the Ravens are evidence of that on the upside. Great turnaround for you, tremendous collapse for us. Also don't forget that the year after the Ravens won the Super Bowl they were swept by the Browns. And the Browns finished 7-9 that year. All the people that want to bash one team while they're down, what do you say about your team when it's down? I'm not bitter Modell moved the team, it's a business. He was the majority owner. His choice. Sure did suck though. But it was just like Irsay. Your town has been through the same thing Cleveland has regarding football. But know some history before you go spouting off on top of your mountain. Last year you lost 9 in a row. You might do the same next year. Maybe not. Saying the Ravens are light years ahead of the Browns is shortsighted. What were you saying last year when the Browns swept the season series? Were we light years ahead. Nope. Or when you were defending champs and we swept the season series? Hmm?
Good luck in the playoffs. You have a great D, and an impressive rookie QB. You can probably take the Titans.

Posted by: easywriter01 | January 8, 2009 7:14 PM
Hey Dominic,
A real joke? You Clevelanders better be careful. The Browns moved because Cleveland fans couldn't fill seats. Looks like it's happening all over again.
Once more thing, over or not for Baltimore when Lewis retires (seriously though, over? chuckle), it NEVER STARTED in Cleveland!
EVER!
Posted by: Matt | January 8, 2009 7:16 PM
Ravens fans are a real joke? Dude, I am guessing that you are a turd mongler who roams chat rooms just to start stuff because you are clearly one of the most ignorant fools to lay a hand on a keyboard. I'm surprised you were able to kick out complete sentences.
All of the Cleveland Browns and other ignorant so-called NFL fans need to shut up and get over the move to Baltimore. It took only a little over 3 years to have your precious team resurrected. But what you, a so called Browns fan and an Original NFL Football team, doesn't know is that Art Modell gave the city of Cleveland all of the awards, traditions, and heritage of the Browns franchise and did not bring it to Baltimore. Nothing was brought to Baltimore except a stripped and bare franchise.
A real Cleveland Browns fan would appreciate what Art Modell did. Also a real fan would know that your owner, Mr. Lerner, actually was in cohoots with the Mayor and Governor of your area by not supplying the revenue to replace or even update your dump of an old stadium. Art had to leave because everyone else in the city, the Indians and Cavs, were getting new stadiums but not his team. His team that had the longest tenure in the city of any major professional sports franchise of which was denied a new stadium.
So Art had to move to Baltimore. Soon after Mr. Lerner gets a deal going with the city and state, as well as with the NFL, to sponsor and create a new Browns team and put in a new stadium...coincidence...no it was not.
Art moves to Baltimore and Baltimore asks Mr. Irsay in Indianapolis to give back the heritage of the Baltimore Colts that he took with him to Indy. Oh and if you didn't know, in 1986, Irsay and Baltimore City came to a settlement to drop all suits against him because he said he was going to sponsor an expansion team for Baltimore and would give back the heritage, name, etc., if Baltimore was to get a team.
Well (besides the fact he never sponsored Baltimore) when asked to give Baltimore back the Colts heritage Irsay said it would cost the city over $50 million dollars and therefore the original agreement was destroyed and Baltimore never received what they were promised.
Thus the Ravens were born.
So the next time you go trolling a site and lay unprofound claims about how everything came from Cleveland, know the facts and get off our site.
This site is for real fans of football and the Baltimore Ravens...a REAL Football Team!!
Oh and one other note pal, Ogden and Lewis were drafted after the Ravens came here to Bmore.
Peace Everybody!
Posted by: A Real Football Team | January 8, 2009 7:17 PM
"Everything you know and have orginated in Cleveland." Not hardly, dude. Only one player remains from your sorry franchise and city. The NFL gift wrapped your new sorry team for you with minimum delay.
But we do have Ozzie, point taken, and he has the smarts to keep drafting players like Ray Lewis. Browns have returned to their rightful place after giving their fans false hope yet again. Go Ravens!

Posted by: GR | January 8, 2009 7:31 PM
I have been following all of the Cleveland.com articles leading up to this Mangini hire. I followed it mainly for entertainment and laughs. One thing is for certain-- leadership at the top is the most important attribute for success. That is why I am so proud of our owner Steve Bisciotti. A leader in the human resources business, Steve is a visionary who knows how to hire the best people and allow them to lead the organization to greatness. His interview process leading to the hire of John Harbaugh involved everyone in the executive branch of the organization. They came up with the list of candidates and everyone had a say in the hiring of the coach. Randy Lerner had little or no outside input into his hiring process, nor did he seek any help from other teams. His actions in hiring a coach before a GM is defies all sound management principles. His infatuation with Eric Mangini shows a lack of maturity for a business executive. The entire process is evolving into one desperate attempt of cloaning the Bill Belichick/Scott Pioli relationship.
You never get ahead in life by being a copy cat. You have to go and make your own kind of music, as the story goes.

did you ever think that maybe the Browns might have been thinking that the best DEFENSIVE COORDIANTOR wasn't the best HEAD COACH available?
Posted by: jonas | January 8, 2009 9:03 PM
Hey "a real football team": Great, great post! The city of Cleveland AND the moron sportswriters that vote for the HOF and exclude Modell from the HOF, would learn something. I find it infuriating and despicable that all the teams that have played in Super Bowls---Tennessee, St Louis, and Indianapolis--am I leaving anyone out?--have left their original home, and they are LAUDED as great teams. The Ravens go to the Super Bowl, and are villified for leaving Cleveland. Give me a break.
I was unaware of Irsay's (elder) renege of a promise to help Baltimore get a team. I was aware of his greed and his attempted extortion. I know I'll never go to heaven for saying this, but I hate him, and will always hate him.
Go Ravens---make everyone eat their words.

Agreed with others - Cleveland should of hired a GM first, and let him/her hire the coach.

If another team hires Ryan as HC and Marvin Lewis gets fired, the Ravens should try to hire him back as DC!
Posted by: michael whiteford | January 9, 2009 12:10 AM
I would agree with the main point of the post - Ryan should have been interviewed.
However, the Browns' owner stated from the beginning that he did not want another rookie head coach. I think that above all else is why he didn't interview Ryan. (Though he did interview a few other candidates without HC experience.)
About the Rooney Rule question posted by "Joe" -- The Browns did interview Browns '08 D Coord Mel Tucker which complies with the Rooney Rule.

It's sad to see the Cleveland fans in here talkin' trash. We all realize, of course, that it's because they've got nothing better to do these days. In fact, their season was over around, oh what, the 4th or 5th week??............Bustin' on the RAVENS because they moved from Cleveland is so lame. Get a life and move on!! Baltimore went 13 seasons without a football team and lost our original team's name, colors, and tradition. Cleveland went 2 years without a team and got to keep all those things that Baltimore lost. It's over. And unlike the sad, pathetic little people of Indianappolis, we would've NEVER wanted our team to have been called the Baltimore Browns. The RAVENS have carved their own identity in the NFL that has NOTHING to do with Cleveland (thank the good Lord!!).

I was wondering IF .....should Ravens upset the Titans tmw and upset the Steelers/Chargers , then beat NFC champs in Superbowl . What would the mood in Cleveland and Browns fans become like ?
Also...........
Last season (2007) After the Browns finished 10-6 , owner Lerner gave out 'extended ' contracts to GM Savage and Coach Crennel . Now one year later , where are these guys today ? After the Mangini hiring , are we surprised that GM candidates like Pioli and Hackett decided they rather stay where they are ?

While you may be right on Rex- and I agree he should be a head coach somewhere- perhaps the Browns have valid reasons. It's not as though previous "successful" Ravens defensive coordinators are having great success when gien a chance. Marvin Lewis and Jack Del Rio had one solid year a piece. Mike Nolan, not so much.
The only constant I can be for sure has had a major influence on the success of the Ravens defense for the past 13 years is #52. He's instrumental in so many D coordinators looking brilliant around here.

I find it interesting that ravens fans bash the browns when they were the city that stole our team. Sounds like they should be thanking us.

Rex deserves to be a HC, but that selfish Ravens fan part of me would like to have him stay.
Give him a contract of longevity and substance and let's keep him here.
With his brother gone out of Oakland, no way he'd go there.
The Brownhose pick another Ohio boy to lead the team to mediocrity.
Maybe Pat Bowlen will be smart enough to wait and see if he can lure him to Denver? I think the Jints Spags will end up there.
Seems as though Detroit , St. Louis and the Jets could be suitors.
No matter what, Rex Ryan is one helluva football coach. Hopefully we can keep him here for a while.
Personally, I think he likes this team and city and you can't have a better owner than "Silent Steve".
We'll see how things play out.

The city of Baltimore stole nothing. Baltimore and St. Louis played by the rules and put forth the BEST expansion packages which the Tagliabue led committee spurned to force teams into Jax and Carolina. This backfired in 2 major ways. In 2 years, existing teams who sat through presentations and saw the great situations in St Louis and Baltimore jumped at the vacant spots left on the table by Tagliabue. Next, the PSL invented by Carolina to finance their unwise purchase became the scourge of the NFL fan. Thank Tagliabue on his way into the HOF. Meanwhile, Jacksonville has to cover 15,000 seats in its stadium with a permanent tarp so that they have a slim chance of selling out and avoiding another blackout. The Ravens have NEVER had an unsold seat in 13 seasons, over 100 consecutive sellouts. And Tags goes into HOF over Modell? Please.
Baltimore stole nothing. We played by the rules and were stabbed in the back by Tagliabue and the NFL. The Browns or the Rams or SOMEONE would have snatched up this great city. It just happened to be the Browns.

Kokinis will be steered away from that disaster in Cleveland by Savage, Ozzie, and anyone else who cares about him. It is a career graveyard.

Att: A Real Football Team
I grew up in Cleveland and lived in the same building that Art Modell lived in when he first moved to Cleveland. I used to have dinner with him on occasions that he ate at the restaurant that was attached to the building. I also held season tickets on the 50 yard line for several years. I was connected to many Browns organizational people.
1- Art Modell was not from Cleveland, but was from New York and didn’t think much of Cleveland even though his public image was that he cared for the city. Buying an NFL football team was a money deal for him as he told me so. The Cleveland Browns at the time of his purchase was a storied franchise.
2- He fired one of the greatest coaches ever, Paul Brown, for a player, Jim Brown who soon after left to go into the movies. Later Paul Brown built a team that went to the Super Bowl. Plus Modell’s ego wanted to rule the Browns and as long as Paul Brown was coach he could never be, The Man.
3- Baltimore is hardly an improvement as a city over Cleveland, I lived in Baltimore for a short time. So Modell never moved to Baltimore because it was a better city. He went because to him it was a money decision.
4- Regarding the stadium, Cleveland did build a new stadium. I spent many a Sunday in the old stadium and it was almost always filled, about 75,000 to 80,000 fans. Season tickets were almost impossible to get. So the money was rolling in.
5- Modell took the team but left the Cleveland Browns name because of law suites that could have delayed the move. Oh, A Real Football Team, Modell took the players, coaches, play books, the very things that make up a team. It not the awards that play on Sunday. You show the level of your education and the inability to think.
6- Many people feel that Modell was a Carpet Bagger. He moved the team from a city that was loyal and supported it to the max for the money and cared little about the Cleveland fans. Raven fans do not delude yourself, Modell never gave a hoot for you either. It was about the money. His great concern for people was a pretend act that is endemic to New Yorkers.

Just thought I would post a comment about the Browns for the fans of the Ravens. First, you would not have a team at all unless that loser Art Model hadn't stabbed Clevelanders in the back and sold the team. Second, the Browns are one of the most storied franchises in NFL history. True we are awful right now, and any Cleveland area person will tell you that; but where did that start? When the team was sold to you, and we got another team in 1999. WHo knows if we will ever be good again, but just remember you attacking us is a bit like pushing around a kid in a wheel chair. It is a tad pathetic! Why do you care who we interview and who we hire if we are so weak! Get over yourselves!
