Speak softly, Harbaugh

"We're going to be a dynasty. If you're not willing to say it out loud, how do you expect to get there." - Ravens coach John Harbaugh, speaking before a national television audience.

I admire the confidence, but these are the kind of words that come back to haunt a coach. Just ask some coach named Lefty, who never did turn Maryland into the "UCLA of the East."

Harbaugh has done well during his early tenure with the Ravens, and most of the players are buying into what he has been preaching over at The Castle. But even though he's confident, it's good to be humble, especially when you've only won two games.

It's good to say those things inside The Castle, not outside.

Bull! Say it LOUD. Kick in the door and announce yourself. If you're scared - you don't belong in the NFL. I LOVE coach's confidence!

I love that he said that. He put himself out there and no doubt intends to work his ass off to get us there. I've been telling the same thing to everyone who will listen. We have the building blocks (potentially): young o-line, Flacco & Rice playing the Aikman/Emmitt roles. I appreciate Harbs having the guts to call his shot amd look forward to his pursuit. Scared money don't make none.

Dynasty?

-His quarterback is a Rookie and has far to go
-His tight end is soft, sensitive, and won't put full effort into every play
-He has one receiver
-His most talented running back is fragile
-He has much to learn in managing the game
-He is an injury away from having almost no defensive backfield
-Many of his players don't have the discipline and/or intelligence to not committ stupid penalties
- He has a returner who likes to fumble
- And most of all, as of yet, he has done nothing.

John, you are doing a great job, but go back to work and let others talk about dynasties in about 5-10 years. Hopefully, you'll be around to hear the talk.

Lefty did great things at Maryland. True he didn't turn it into the UCLA of the East but that's not what haunts him its the death of Lenny Bias that haunts him.

Being a dynasty means winning multiple championships. Every teams goal should be to be a dynasty. You have to be cinfident in your ability in order to reach goals liek that and I think by him saying that like he did he has the confidence needed. He is still humble which is what seperates him from being confident and not cocky.

If your going to be a dynasty you have to think outside the box.....if everyone could just go by the book and win then every team would be dynasty...Belichick makes adjustments based on what the opponent is doing......its the yin and yang concept....... but more importantly he does what he feels gives the team the best opportunity to win...... regardless of how others might percieve what he does.....if you have a defense that has been the most dominant in the game for the better part of last 10 years and its currently ranked #1 again....you gamble with that ....not a rookie quarterback who is inevitablly only going to get one chance to make a play on an inevitable third and long which will be an obvious passing situation...... with only one dependable receiver....and you dont put the ball in your opponents scoring range which is something they probably could not do themselves in a sudden death overtime situation....ordinary conventional by the book coaching is not going to create a dynasty....understand the power of yourr greatset asset your defense....... and use it to your advantage ....the whole team balance concept is good for the growth of the team....... but at this moment there is no comparison ......realize that and make your decisions based on that reality if you want to achieve success...you have a great weapon.... use it.

"you don't go into the lions den softly, you go in there screaming like a banshee with your machete" Not sure if it's exact but similiar to what BB used in the playoff game in Tennessee. Confidence starts at the top, that's why some report on leaders and others lead.

The raven's already have a defensive dynasty as Steve Young mentioned monday nite, all harboh needs to do is turn the other 50% around which looks like it's already started so he should be confident.

I'm skeptical that was the actual quote. I find it hard to believe Harbaugh would put this out there on national tv. What I believe he meant to say was that they want to be a dynasty and will build towards it. Not WE WILL. It's a goal and it should be everyones goal. Does anyone doubt that he will give it what hes got? NO. Plus, suzy kolber blows almost everything out of proportion anyways

At least he wasn't saying that anything short of the Super Bowl this year would be a disappointment like his predecessor.

Off topic, but Ronnie brought up a question I've had for 22 years. Why was Lefty fired because of Bias' death by OD on cocaine, and why does it taint his accomplishments at MD, which are monumental? Was Lefty supposed to be at the party at 3 a.m, on a Sunday morning? Was he supposed to be clairvoyant? Every day now, you read where at least half a dozen college athletes are charged with DUI's, drug possession or trafficking, etc. Why is Lefty responsible for the tragic mistake in judgment that Bias made?

Rick H. What part of "We are going to be" didn't you understand. We have the pieces in place and the leadership and owner to make it happen. If you don't believe it can happen, it won't. Maybe you never herd of setting goals. Try it sometime....

I don't stand the negative reaction to this either. Harbaugh didn't say we ARE a dynasty, and he didn't say we would be one starting next year.

He said, as Dave J pointed out, that we are "going to be." What coaches out there don't share that ambition? What's wrong with vocalizing your goals?

I'd rather have a coach who says clearly what he wants to accomplish than one who hides behind vague promises. And I'm sure Harbaugh has no problem being held accountable for these words, as long as he's given a respectable amount of time to try and make it happen.

To Alex's point regarding Kolber: she brings nothing to any game she "covers." There's a funny post on CoastToCoastRavens.com going after the ESPNers -- notably Steve Young and Kolber -- for their silly commentary. It's a pretty humorous read.

Dave J.

Yes, I have "herd" of setting goals. Have even completed one or two. Has John at this level? If he has, I would suggest he set them a little higher.

I would also suggest that after a loss that it comes accross a little arrogant and cocky to say what he said. Accomplish something over a period of time, and let others talk about dynasties.

Come on people.... Its football, of course he should an will say it. Bart Scott said he was going to KILL Hines Ward, Yes Kill as in MURDER. So what??....Its Football, its entertainment, by next week you'll have so many other sound bites that you won't even remember this comment about a dynasty. And to the rest of you know it alls I'd like to stick a microphone in your face everyday and ask about how your job, careers, and goals are coming along. Then we will have some really good stuff to laugh at.

only perrenial losers try to have one magic season, winners know they are the best every year and are going to be a dysanty . I'm glad he said it, he didn't say we are going to win the superbowl this year or call out any particular team he stated they are building something bigger than the 2000 team that was 1 and done.

Here is an analogy.

Let's say we have this 1st year starter that up to this year the only thing he had accomplished was that he was a pretty good special teams player. Let's call him John H. In John's first two games, in his one on one match-ups, he did pretty well and his team won. But he really didn't play against any competition. In his 3rd game he made several questionable decisions that may have contributed to his team losing. And then after the game he stood in front of the press and told them that he planned on being one of the best players ever.

What would you think of John H? What would other players think of John H?

Wouldn't it be much smarter on John H's part to just play? When he is finished playing and has accomplished all his goals, leave it to others to call him one of the best ever.

Heap is a stud, however, they need him to block right now.

I would get a FA tight end who can block and make heap a full time WR

You ask the other 31 coaches in the NFL if they plan to win multiple championships in their career, and you tell me if any of them answer any different.

i agree with the guy who said we already have a defensive dynasty in place. i think coach knew that when he made that comment. a little offense is all we need to start winning championships. name one team that can score 21 on our defense if they're all healthy. all we need is an offense that can score atleast 21 points a week and we become one of the top teams in the league. think about it.

Rick H.

I love that analogy. John please stop talking about dynasties and go to work.
