McAlister and Harbaugh butting heads?
It's apparent that Ravens cornerback Chris McAlister was being disciplined by head coach John Harbaugh in Sunday's game against the Dolphins.
If the Ravens were benching him for a poor performance against the Colts, then they would have had to bench the entire secondary.
Over the years, McAlister has always been the player to buck the system. There are rules for the team, and rules for McAlister, at least in McAlister's mind. McAlister has always been the type of person to say whatever he wants, and it has gotten him in trouble. McAlister is a great player and a decent person, but just has that lethargic, 'I don't care' attitude.
That goes against what head coach John Harbaugh preaches. I know that Harbaugh and McAlister have had some other issues, and it was only a matter of time before Harbaugh took some action. He's a rookie coach and he can't back down from any of the players. Not McAlister, not Ray Lewis, not Ed Reed or any player on the roster. It will take maybe another day or two but McAlister will get over this. I wouldn't be surprised if general manager Ozzie Newsome has gotten involved.
But I think in the offseason Harbaugh is going to have to make some decisions on players. He has to decide on the players he feels are his kind of players, and those he wants to let go. I wouldn't be surprised if McAlister wanted out, and the Ravens obliged him.
Both parties would be happy.

I don't mind speculating about some obvious coaching moves,Mike, but I would'nt try to push any buttons to eject C Mac off of our team(?) We have more than half a season to maybe play for something toward the end and who's to say that things can't be ironed out for the near future. Now the offseason is a different story but please don't make an issue more serious than it needs to be in public;let Chris handle it as the pro he is and Harbaugh will have to recipricate in kind.Where does Rex fit in this new story? He wants to be a head coach so he should have some input to guide the fellas through a stretch here.

Do you mean you are surprised if Ozzie HAS gotten involved, or hasn't?

Wondering if he may be part of some trade talks. We could use a big wide out.

I know Chris has been a bit of a head case over the years but when healthy and motivated there are few better than him. I hope he and Harbaugh can resolve their issues and Chris can begin shutting down the leagues best receivers again.

With regard to the final conclusion, that would suck.

Earth to C - Mac , it's not 2000 anymore .

I hope that is not the case, C-Mac was terrific before the Colts game and he was playing with a knee injury. I was hoping the team can at least get a couple more years out of him.

Bryan, I WOULD be surprised if McAlister was "part of some trade talks" since the 2008 trading deadline passed last Tuesday. The Ravens now have 359 days to trade CMac, but I doubt it's at the top of their agenda for next year.

CMAC doesn't care? Thats almost the most absurb thing I have heard. The guy is as pro-baltimore as any long term Raven on the team. You see him around town more than most, matter of fact. He loves the team and the city. Harbaugh has an arrogance, already, as a first time coach. It is needed at that position, it helps players buy into the system if he exudes confidence. But that should not be allowed to form a wedge between a Raven, the city and team should be proud of... Everyone has disagreements, but you never hear CMAC get into any trouble. I hope the issue is resolved, and CMAC joins Ogden, Ray, and Reed as Ravens for life. Forever 21, dang it.

Without question this guy has been the most overrated player to play for this team. When he was a "franchise" player he was the most undisciplined ...and as a supposed "shutdown" corner, the only thing he ever shut down was his own defense.

"THIS (TEAM) NEEDS AN ENEMA!"

What does Hartbaugh know about defense-- let Ryan handle Chris. Let our coach worry about special teams which is what he did for Phila, that can't return a kick without a penalty-- show he can handle this first before worrying about a CB

Trade him to the Cowboys

Ball is in McAlister's court. Does he want to be a Raven or not. Ravens are not going to the Super Bowl this year and the odds are 25-1 they make the play-offs. So the Ravens don't need a head case. They need someone who wants to play this year and beyond. Harbaugh's smart. He is going to establish the Ravens way or there is a highway. The new Ravens way is going to be a top quality winning franchaise. Players like McAlister will find themselfs in Oakland or adapt. I look forward to it.

I hope the ravens have enough sense to realize before we do any dealing we need some decent CB's before we get rid of our best one.

Chirs already mentioned on his radio show earlier this year that this might be his last year at cornerback. He doesn't like being out on an island. He would like to make the move to strong safety like Rod Woodson did late in his career. If that's the case, where does that fit into the Ravens' plan?

McC is past his prime but still has to rank among the better Dbacks in the NFL when he shows some discipline. When he lets his ego and selfish play get in the way he detracts from the overall defense. My philosophy has always been, if a player wants out it's better for the team overall to let him go.

you are crazy c mac as you call him is overrated he always gives up the big play bites on the pump fake, always wanting to jump a rout and be the hero, c mac listen up this is a team ,play as a team or get out maybe jerry jones will take you...

Do you guys watch the same games I do? Who thinks this guy is a quality corner? I watch this guy EVERY week give up three or 4 big plays. If he doesn't get beaten like a mule, he'll invariably have a critical personal foul that costs dearly. Let him go. Thankfully we have a new sherrif in town. It will take a couple of years to "unbillickify" this team. The children have to go and we need to bring in more players like Zibikowski, Leonhard and McLain who will work their tail off. When is the last time Clayton threw a block? Or McAlister ran someone down from behind? Time to get the dead weight out of town.

Harbaugh needs to "get a grip". Here is a man who says he never "calls out a player", but then benches a guy for very strange reasons and in effect--'calling him out'. His statements thus far about the situation seems dishonest. Is he another Tom Coughlin pre-introspection? We need to win games and not tie things up with the coach's ego. I am liking him less and less.

mcalister is one of the best corners in the league. but to say that ravens need to let him go is wrong. ravens can trade him for a wide receiver, but they will be hurt on defense samari "am down and can't get up" rolle is worthless, send him packing.

Everybody needs to relax. You are all extrapolating what happened, and have no factual proof of anything. Now, C-Mac is far from average as a CB. He is in the top rung of CBs in the league, in a class with Champ Bailey, Nmadi Asomugha, and Antonio Cromartie. In fact, I would rather have C-Mac for his physicality alone. So lets no speculate or assume we know what happened. And Vince, Zbikowski, Leonhard, and McClain are backups who have played due to injury, and not all that well anyway, so I don't really see the good in getting more backups. We need to get more draft picks and start rebuilding through the draft. If Harbaugh wants his kind of players, then thats where he will find them.

C-MAC must perorm, not blame but perorm. just look at history.

I haven't seen a corner get beaten so badly as McAllister was beaten by the Colts two weeks ago. The guy either needs to get his head out of his lower orifice or go somewhere else to play.
Posted by: ybnormal | October 21, 2008 12:45 PM
With all the attention this is getting it's probably going to cause more problems for the Coach the player and the team. The comments from the press and bloggers are starting to remind me of when Eddie Murray was run out of town.

Mr. McAllistor should remember who is the Head Coach and who is the Cornerback.
Posted by: Edwin Miller | October 21, 2008 2:24 PM
So are you CMac bashers saying you want to see Frank Walker in there instead of Cmac on a regular basis? Do you remember what life was like last year without him? do you remember what life was like without him period with Deron Jenkins at CB? Chris is one of the top CBs in the league(which is why he is voted to the pro bowl consistently). Does he get beat on occasion? yes but what corner doesnt? Champ Bailey gets beat but Denver fans arent calling for his head because he got beat on one play in one game. We dont know what he did or didnt do to get benched so lets leave the Coaching and GMing to the people at 1 winning drive that know whats going on
Posted by: B | October 21, 2008 2:28 PM
Champ Bailey and Chris McAlister in the same sentence? Nope, not happening.

True dat, ybnormal ("haven't seen a corner get beaten so badly as McAllister was beaten by the Colts 2 weeks ago.").This was punishment for that game. Harbaugh's drawing a line in the sand on his "no one bigger than the team" message. Is he calling out CMac for dogging it and/or hogging it on execution? Lack of effort in preparation? CMac certainly comes off as a diva in the Billick era in the book Next Man Up. Or was he benched because he won't own up to a knee injury that is making him uncompetitive? Injury is a topic that Harbaugh seems to like to keep mysterious anyway.
But also true dat to Leroy Jenkins ("He is in the top rung of CBs in the league"). We've got no one better to turn to. When Rolle, McAlister, Landry, and Reed are in there and reasonably healthy, we're tough. See please the New England game last year.
We gotta talk him off the ledge for now, re-evaluate the secondary after the season, and go after CBs in the draft like we've done with linebackers and safeties.

Hate to see these kinds of controversies, which can't be good for team morale, but that being said, there is no "I" in team and any player who places himself above the team is surely expendable. In fact, as good a corner as CMac is, at his age, if we can get something in trade, it would probably be in everybody's best interest at this point!

Any chance that what the Ravens are hiding is injury-related, and he is at nickel to cover a physical limitation that makes him unsuitable for his normal role?
Posted by: DeRon Jenkins | October 21, 2008 5:15 PM
you fools are the biggest bunch of itiots I ever heard. Most of you must be high school football player wantabees!
Cmac is now, and has always been one of the top corners in the league. Look what happened to our D last year when both he and Rolle were out.
The Ravens are a MUCH better D with both, and will continue to be for the near future. Unfortunately both are getting up in age and we need to have a plan to replace, but mark my words we will regret it when they were gone. Once again think back to the second half of last season you idiots.
Get a life and enjoy what you have now!

Please guys, remember not to take everything the media says as gospel, especially Big Mike who would probably be the first to admit he likes to stir the pot. And for anyone who is saying Harbs has a tude or an ego, you're crazy. The guy is about the team first, second, and third.
Posted by: Macadamia | October 21, 2008 8:27 PM
Everybody knows that C-Mac was hurt for the Colts game even their #18, but he is much better than what we have on the bench. Only ignorant writers(do Sun writers have to keep stirring the pot and lean towards negativity?) and inexperienced coaches would blow this out of proportion.
