Going for the jugular
The Ravens are a solid football team, but they have to learn how to finish games to move to the next level. They might have to adjust their thinking. Against the Browns and Bengals, the Ravens were able to finish them off with a strong running game. But the Browns and Bengals are losing teams. Against better teams, the Ravens might have to take more chances offensively. Yesterday, the Titans came with run blitzes in the last half of the final quarter to shut off the Ravens' running game, and the Ravens didn't take any chances with rookie quarterback Joe Flacco, who was having a bad day.
Defensively, the Ravens have to stay with the pressure on the quarterback because their secondary is a M*A*S*H unit. If you give any quarterback time, he will eventually complete passes, even a scrub like Kerry Collins. With five of the next six games on the road, the Ravens might have to gamble more. This team is still finding itself.

There's no doubt we have to learn to finish games off, but all things considered, who thought we'd be 2-2 at this point in the season. We are an average team right now, we beat the bad teams handily and lose close games to the good teams. Flacco has made the biggest mistakes he's going to make. Fumbles returned for TDs and back-to back games with 2 ints are the rookie mistakes that I was anticipating. However, I love Flacco's pocket presence and it is time to let the kid go, stop holding him back. At this point, I would rather see him making mistakes by being aggressive getting the ball downfield. The Titans had 8 men on the line of scrimmage for most of the fourth quarter and we never threw deep. Open it up a little Cam, I'm not asking for the run and shoot but when the other team puts 8 men on the line of scrimmage and we're only up 4, BE AGGRESSIVE!!!

Actually, at one point, Flacco had 12 straight completions. Those roll out interceptions revealed a serious flaw in his game, but otherwise he did not have a bad day. I do agree that on that last drive, Cameron decided to stay on the ground, get as much yardage as possible, then punt and let the defense win the game. Bad strategy, in need of revision.

I wouldn't call kerry collins a scrub. Had he been a raven for the past several years they would of had a lot more victories.
took a friend to the game yesterday and he couldn't believe how much we cheer for 4 yard gains. the offense started the season looking good however it appears to be regressing throughout the game not just in the final minutes.

Well yesterday was a disappointment.
First what's up with Matt Stover, those missed field goals were big in both games?? This is a serious problem and needs to be addressed.
Second I agree with you for once. We need to take chances let Flacco throw the ball and take it on the chin when he makes mistakes.
This is no superbowl year. Let Flacco learn, let him make mistakes. Also tell him when he's scrambling to throw the ball away. He's made THAT mistake to many times. Shades of Boller.
The big mistake I saw in the 4th quarter was giving the ball to Mccahee. He was tired maybe hurt, not really performing. We needed to get 1st downs and didn't. Flacco interception or not, thats where we lost the game.

I've always understood that it will take a little while to explore what works with this current team. It's very fustrating to believe we could be 4-0,can you believe that?Rookie qb=essential running game;every opponent will gameplan that theory.Let's work Troy S. and some gadget plays to loosen things up once in awhile.

I'm tired of seeing the defense play three strong quarters of football only to fall apart in the fourth. In the past, I blamed it on the "three-and-out" offense that kept the defense on the field for the bulk of the game until they wore out, but yesterday the offense did all they could to keep drives alive and give the defense some rest. The D needed to finish the Titans off, and they failed. If they continue to struggle, I think Cam Cameron needs to abandon the conservative approach and see what this offense can do. We sure aren't winning this way.

You should stop referring to Kerry Collins as a scrub. Anyone who has been a starting QB for most of his 14 years in the NFL and has thrown for 35000+ yards isn't a scrub. Wildly inconsistent, yes. Scrub, no.

Mike: I have not heard you comment on the horrible clock management at the end of the first half. Last year you would have bashed Billick for a similar blunder. It seems to me that using the final time-out earlier would allow a team to calm down and put themselves in a better position for a positive play, and allow for much greater flexibility in terms of play-calling. They could then spike the ball and kick a field goal. Terrible!

Mike,
Dead on. Well put. I still bleed purple.

Why are the Ravens wearing black tights??

Not only missed field goals but the borderline ones like the 50yrd fg is totally out of the question. We punt and on the touch-back the net turns out to be like 17yrds. Like Stover did to Upshaw, its time to move forward.

Am I the only one tired of hearing that we have no "deep threat." Teams like Arizona and the New York Giants were without their #1 receivers this past weekend and scored over 40 points (Anyone heard of Steve Breaston because he had 80 yards yesterday). We struggle to get over 14 points and at that our defense normally gets us a field goal at the least. Pounding the ball with the run and settling for field goals only keeps opposing teams in the game even though we are beating them up physically. The Steelers and Titans were laughing at us in the fourth quarter when we were beating them so badly but they actually had posession of the ball with a chance to win in the end. Mike Preston writes "The Ravens were content to keep pounding the ball, and let their defense try to win the game for them. The strategy was sound, and the odds were heavily in the Ravens' favor." This is the exact mind set that drove BRIAN BILLICK out of this town. This mind set drives a stake between the offense and the defense. Harbaugh is supposed to bring a new mindset. When are we going to start thinking as an offensive team again? Even Dilfer took chances a few times per game and threw a long ball with one of the shortest arms in the game. Flacco will be a good quarterback but why are we watching him throw interceptions 5 yards down the field in our own territory. Let him throw the ball 60 yards and if they intercept it then we have the other team pinned back (which seems to be our strategy anyway). right? We had 2 4th downs with short yardage to go in the middle of the field and didnt even attempt to give our offense a chance (one was at the Titan's 35 yard line where it was too far for Stover to kick a 48 yarder??). Seems worth the risk to go for it if you can put the game away(a thought that hasnt crossed our mind in years). The mindset remains defensive which will lead to many more close disappointing loses. When will we say "wow it is nice to have the offense doing well since our defense is off a little today." Our team is not getting any younger and we have key free agents. We have enough talent on this team to win now and we have shown it thus far. I love the Ravens but it gets harder and harder to watch them play every weekend. Anyone who blames the defense for this loss or any other loss when we give up less than 20 points should be ashamed of themselves. They give up 90 yards all day(3 points on a flacco int in the first half) and then one decent drive aided by the refs and it is the defense's fault. Ray Lewis should be knocking on the fan's doors that say such a thing. Lastly, creativity does not = 2 fake end arounds and 1 successful end around.

lets keep the season and the team in perspective. The S.B. season we had a stretch w/o scoring a touchdown. When the D needed a pick up...the O would put something together to help out. Finally, the Ravens made the playoffs and beat some tough customers ON THE ROAD to the super bowl. DON'T GIVE UP THE SHIP MEN!!! Chief

i want to comment on what dave said. i agree with everything he said except one thing. the ravens lack of a deep threat or any good receivers except for mason, in my opinion, is the real reason billick got fired. he never developed a quarterback everybody says but i cant remeber any wide receivers being all stars in baltimore either while billick was in office. and please dont say quadry ismail. (lol)how can a quarterback succeed without confidence his receivers are going to catch the ball. the ravens have one good receiver in mason. they desperately need somebody that flacco can sail a pass to over top of the offense. then maybe, unlike billick, cameron can make our offense look like a dominate offense like the giants.
