Boller's time in Baltimore likely over
Quarterback Kyle Boller's career in Baltimore probably just ended. Ravens coach John Harbaugh announced that Boller will be put on injured reserve. Harbaugh said Boller either has a biceps injury or a torn labrum. Boller was taking medication for the labrum, but Harbaugh said the injury did not respond. The Ravens replaced Boller on the roster with Todd Bouman, 36, who has played with six teams during his career.
As I mentioned yesterday, Bouman probably came cheap and he is non-threatening as far as challenging rookie starter Joe Flacco or eventual backup Troy Smith.
Boller was in the last year of his contract. He never lived up to his promise in Baltimore as a first-round pick. He was hurried into action in the first game of his rookie year, and his biggest flaw was his decision-making in the red zone.

It is a shame. Kyle is such a good guy and he doesn't deserve this. He is a real team player that some raven players should try and mirror.

Boller was "hurried into action in the first game of his rookie year" ... Hmm... sound like anyone else you know? Heaven help us if Flacco turns out to be another Boller ...

Boller deserved better than what he got in Baltimore. The guy was a true warrior and never complained. Brian Billick probably ruined his career by rushing him into the starting line up and the Ravens "fans” owe Boller an apology as well for how they treated him over the years. I am sure Kyle will never forget the home town fans cheering as he lay injured on the M&T Bank Stadium turf. That rates up there with Philly fans infamously booing Santa Claus. With the class and professionalism Kyle carried himself with the past five years, he simply deserved better than the Ravens or their fans (of which I am one and certainly guilty by association). Maybe things would have turned out the same for Kyle (i.e. – poor decision making, turnover prone, not living up to his first round draft status) if he had went to an organization that brought him along in the Carson Palmer type model. We will never know. What we do know is that the Ravens have not handled his career in the best manner possible (including the final insult of throwing him to the lions in the Vikings preseason game behind a 2nd and 3rd string O-line) and even though he was the Ravens player that a sizable portion of the fan base loved to hate, he always did his job to the best of his ability, never complained and was a tough as they come. I think as history will indicate, it will be those traits that true Ravens fans will remember when Kyle Boller’s name is mentioned in years to come. Best of luck Kyle!

For Boller I am glad. I will always feel that he got a bad deal here. " Happy feet" was what you wrote about him. But you never mentioned what a tough guy he is and how he took every hit that came his way and never complained or whined about it. And this on a team noted for it's whiners and complainers. I wish for him success where ever life takes him. He surely was not a good QB but he stands with Johnny U., as the toughest QB's who ever player here.

I just hope the same thing don't happen
to Flacco that happened to Boller. The only receiver that he has is Mason, nobody else has lived up to there expectations. Never understood why we never went for a top receiver in the draft.I think we are in for a few long years.. Defense is old and has to be overhauled. The offense is the same old story...Maybe it wasn't Billick

I fell into the trap of owning a Boller and McNair jersey. Half of my closet is now obsolete.
Posted by: Steve | September 3, 2008 12:55 PM
Why wasn't Dante Culpepper brought it for a look? I read that he is actively trying to get back in the league and would accept league minimum. If Flacco is our QB of the future he should be able to deal with some healthy competition.

Methinks the Ravens made a HUGE mistake by signing Bouman over Harrington... no matter how cheap they got him.
Posted by: Flipkid | September 3, 2008 1:06 PM
Best of Luck to Kyle in the future. One of the toughest guy I think the Ravens have seen. Always being trashed by fans and the media and Kyle took it all without a word. Maybe the worst treated player in Baltimore history.

This is the most merciful thing to happen to Ravens fans in the past six years. Nice guy but terrible NFL QB. This is addition by subtraction.
Posted by: old19fan | September 3, 2008 1:13 PM
Hey Mike this town is starting to be a joke. Game week and there wasn't 1 single article in the sun about the ravens today. The orioles should be in the classified section and the ravens can't even rate. How times have changed.

Not only is Boller the kind of guy that took every hit, both in a physical sense as well as hits from the fans and the media, and kept right on being a team guy - Boller is the kind of guy you want in a locker room.
All the speculation and the carping to replace him, even bringing in an old warhorse (McNair), a Heisman Trophy winner (Smith), and a highly touted first round pick (Flacco) to supplant him, and he never gave anything but support.
I remember reading a few years back - I think this was after the cheers when he'd been hurt, by the way - that there was a holiday charity event and some of the players took kids from underpriviliged families and helped them shop for Christmas with donated gift cards. Everybody else's group came in right at the spending limit, but Kyle's group was several hundred dollars over, and he made up the difference from his own pocket. I truly hope great things for Kyle in the future, whether here or in another city.
Oh, and for the record...the leading passer in Ravens history is Kyle Boller.

Picking up Simms would have been a very interestng move. I think we missed the boat on this one. I guess he wanted more money.
Posted by: GHT | September 3, 2008 1:30 PM
Rushed or not, Kyle had 5 years to correct the fundamental problems that plagued his performance. Even at his best, Kyle still could not get the footwork down or find his second and third receivers. That said, he certainly seemed like a standup guy and should be able to continue his career as a backup QB when his health returns.

Boller is a class act... Always was positive, as he was rushed into a horrible situation. The guy may have been a great qb if they didnt throw him into the fire. I wish him the best. Great team guy.
Posted by: Miya Opinion | September 3, 2008 1:45 PM
Maybe Boller took a lot of those hits because in the pocket (when he stayed longer than a blink of an eye) he went through his reads (when he wasn't staring down a reciever), ONE One-thousand one -hundred and one pause...TWO One-thousand one -hundred and one pause...THREE One-(BLAM!). Or maybe it's because a defensive end who's blowing a whistle, blasting an air-horn and announcing his arrival over the PA system could still get the drop on him in the pocket (when he stayed longer than a blink of an eye). Or maybe, just maybe, he's a nice guy that can not play QB in the NFL. However, it will never be his fault that the greatest defense in recent history had it's chance at dynasty status ruined because of a poorly run and executed offensive team. That honor is obviously Billicks and, surprise surprise, Ozzy. Boller was really just an overwhelmed child told to become the bread-winner of his starving family way before he had any skills to do so.

Kyle Boller is tough as nails, and never whined or complained.
To the pundits, he continued to improve every year. His turnovers are down, % complete up.
I believe he wants to be, and stay a Raven. Don't count him out for next year.

Boller seems like a good person & was a great team player. That said, this is a competition & he was a horrible QB.
Posted by: Cereal Blogger | September 3, 2008 2:01 PM
I agree with most of the sentiment in this column. Boller deserves better than what he got from the Ravens organization. He was never groomed properly, he generally had poor offensive lines in front of him, and he had lousey, conservative offensive game plans that he had to perform under. Also, the team has never done anything to provide him with any decent receivers. As a result, his play was erratic and he sustained some terrible beatings. But the guy had great character. He never complained about the beatings he took or the insensitive way he was treated by the fans. To boo a hometown player when he is on the ground injured, as the Baltimore fans did to Boller, was an embarrasment to the city and a total classless and inexcusable act. Wherever he goes in the future, if it is not in Baltimore, I wish him well. He deserves better than what he got in Baltimore.

That stinks. I liked Boller.
Posted by: Neil B. | September 3, 2008 2:15 PM
Nice guy, but glad he is no longer our problem. Time to close the book on him. It will be interesting to see if once healthy he gets any try-out opportunities. I have doubts.

Boller, like the Orioles Danial Cabera, have been 5 years of total frustation.Get them out of town.

FINALLY!!! So glad the Kyle Boller experiment is OVER!!! BOO-Frikin-WHOO to all you of you you feel sad for Boller. Come on, the guy got to live his dream of playing in the NFL. He sucked, but he got a chance. Thats more then most people can ever say. Yeah, he can take a hit and doesnt crumble like some other QBs but I'm not sure thats really an attribute. I mean, if the guy scrambled out of the pocket and avoided being hit, then made a play, then yes that would merit a "good job" but getting hit is something you shouldn't let happen. And most of those hits were from when he stode in the pocket TOO LONG. Great he can throw the ball 60 yards from his knees but can he throw a five yard out pass accurately...NO! Good riddens and GOOD BYE. Please dont sign this washed up QB as a back up. He was given all the chances to succeed and he never got it done.
Posted by: Big Bob | September 3, 2008 2:30 PM
Bouman knows the offensive system and is ready to play. He will be replaced by someone else who will need time to learn the system.
Posted by: Joe | September 3, 2008 2:32 PM
The Ravens drafted Mark Clayton with their #1 pick several years ago. Todd Heap is a former #1 pick as well. Boller has had talent around him. You can blame the coaching but at the end of the day, it's Boller who has to get the ball into his receivers hands. He might be a nice guy, but nice guys don't necessarily win ball games.

The treatment of Kyle is just one instance in a long line of pathetic Baltimore fan behavior. We always insist on calling ourselves the best fans in the country, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Kyle was subjected to the kind of vicious attacks that ought to be reserved for murderers and rapists. Cheering for injuries, booing at every opportunity. Congratulations, Ravens "fans." We helped ruin a career and our reputation.
Boller certainly wasn't a top flight QB, but the circumstances surrounding him were never even average, much less good. I feel really bad for the guy. He had heart, a quality in short supply on the Ravens.
Posted by: Joe | September 3, 2008 2:38 PM
It would be a terrible shame if Kyle Boller never plays a game with Ravens again. Kyle didn't have chance to succeed with this team. He was repeatedly thrown to the lions behind a bad offensive line only to take multiple beatings. He had some players who thought they ran the team who would not support him and a Press that dogged every bad thing he did only to ignore those same mistakes when the One and Out Star quarterback made the same mistakes. The worst of all was the abuse he took from the "Fans". Through all of this Kyle remained the ultimate professional. He was also one of the toughest players on the Ravens. No one can ever say he never played his hardest! I hope the Ravens think long and hard before they release Kyle Boller. Good quarterbacks don't grow on trees in Baltimore and Kyle is a good quarterback, if given a real chance. It may be better if another team does pick up Kyle, he may then have a real chance to succeed. He may be better off if he does leave because the Ravens will have another losing season this year. I can only wish the best for Kyle. He always gave us his best!
Posted by: Stan | September 3, 2008 2:53 PM
Kyle never possessed (and never will, because they are unteachable) the intangibles that any very good/great QB must have, and they have nothing to do with arm strength or foot speed. He always sped up when the great ones slow down, he had terrible pocket presence and he absolutely could not scramble for first downs. Great athlete, great guy, tough as nails. Not a starting NFL QB, and I blame the Ravens "brain trust" for basically wasting these past 5 years because of it.
Posted by: DNo | September 3, 2008 3:09 PM
Right, his surroundings were never very good. If you believe this then you truly are dillusional. A top flight defense and a high quality running game to start his career. What more could the guy ask for except for an inept offensive system he had some of the highest quality coaches that included jim fassel and rick neuheisal. This kid was given every opportunity to succeed and failed miserably at it. So what he took hits and didnt complain. I see just about every other quarterback with bad protection that doesn't complain because *shocker* this is the NFL and I have never heard of a quarterback ever blaming his O-Line. Oh and speaking of O-line, he was given quite possibly the best left tackle to play behind. You Boller apologists truly are blind.
Posted by: JAS | September 3, 2008 3:24 PM
Kyle no matter how much people bad mouthed him, he never pointed the finger, or whined, cried, or showed childish frustration as some of our players the confused fans seem to like did. Kyle was tough, a competitor that gave it his all, even though the Ravens NEVER had a pass blocking line, NEVER had a Playmaker at WR, and NEVER a good offensive coordinator with a system designed for passing on this team! BUT you have your fan favorite players that have cried, pointed fingers, and walked away from the team while the season was in play, or remain silent and not want to lead a team or motivate. YES, I mean Ray Lewis, Jonathon Ogden, McAlister, Jamal Lewis, Shannon Sharpe, and a few others. Funny how you people over look them, but always used Kyle as the fall guy! Kyle Boller, good luck in the futer for playing with a better team and fans that support you. I always did.
Posted by: Larry | September 3, 2008 3:38 PM
Boller definitely a tough guy and a class act that I would love for my children to look up to, unlike many others on the team or in the league. FYI: IT DOES NOT MATTER WHO THE QB IS, the O-line has never been strong! I would hate to see Kyle leave and as stated by someone else given a real chance with the right O-line, he could actually produce results. Look what McNair did not do for us. Good luck Kyle in all you do!

I remember the day Ravens selected Kyle Boller as 19th overall pick in first round of 2003 Draft . We were rooting for Ravens to draft Leftwich . But Fate seemed to impact both Boller and Leftwich . Leftwich had some early success before injuries/inconsistency caused Jacksonville to bannish him out of town . Boller had expectations and spotlight on him from get-go. Before anyone bash Boller , he a) never made excuses b) he was model citizen c) he was team player (did you ever hear of being LATE , or sleeping in meetings , or pointing fingers ? ) d) he was tough player ( did he ever whine about the injuries or the weather ?) e) he had worked in community charities . However one thing Boller couldnt do was read the defense , protect the football and play the QB consistently . But he TRIED his best .
For those of you who cheered while Boller was on ground hurt . That was low class .
Kyle Boller , if this is your last year , may we wish you success whereever you go , we know you worked hard .

What a bunch of cry babies that are so sorry to see Boller go. They can leave with him. The team will be better without him. Like someone else said...addition by subtraction. By the way add this up...he lost more than he won ! Best wishes and Good Riddance! Oh by the way he's a millionaire so don't cry too much
Posted by: DARNELL | September 3, 2008 3:55 PM
Kyle will rebound and be a solid QB somewhere in the future. Great guy, true warrior and I wll never forget that New England game in 2007 where he did everything possible to beat them and had the defense let him down in the end.
Turn the page...

First off, I have to join in with those who have so eloquently pointed out that Kyle is really a class act when it comes to life and his approach to it. I wish half the people I am forced to deal with on a daily basis were more like him. I don't know if he'll ever read this, but if you do Kyle, lemmie tell ya, you are all aces with me on that score.
As far as on the field performance goes, we might have a bone to pick. Yeah, I often wonder if Kyle would have looked a whole lot better to the general public if he'd played behind an O line that was feared and had receiving threats like the Cowboys did in their prime with Novacek and Irvin. Thing is though, look at Green Bay last year. Noboby will ever convince me that had they not had Farve at QB, they would have done as well, and I don't CARE how well they do this year. Farve put them into contention. In fact, it should be real interesting to see what impact he has on the Jets. Whatever it is, I'd venture they'll win 4 more games than they would have without him.
So, I guess we'll see where it goes from here. Joe is gonna be thrown to the wolves, and hopefully, he won't get eaten alive. I submit, however, that he's sure gonna get munched on for a while. As to Kyle, I just hope that someone out there is willing to take him on after he recovers from surgery. If he's earned anything for all his service there, it's at least one more shot somewhere else. Who knows? Maybe a change of uniform is just what he needs to get his groove on....

Praise the Lord. Now hopefully all those pseudo-ravens fans who would rather see this team continue to lose so long as their dreamy boyfriend gets to remain the starter will now follow their beloved to whatever NFL bench that's willing to support him and his bizarre shot-put throws. All hail the end of an era that should have ended two years ago.
Posted by: JoeG | September 3, 2008 4:14 PM
I can't believe you people sit here and stand up for Kyle Boller. You must all be joking. He said the right things to the media because he had to to keep his job. I will go out there and trip over my own feet going back in the pocket or fumble when I am running and no one is near me and then say I love baltimore fans. We have the right to voice our opinion when in the stadium or not, its America. Boller would never have been a good qb, he has zero leadership abilities. If he was such a tough guy why did the team never embrace? I think Ray is a pretty tough guy but never voiced his support for him. What about JO? he almost left 2 yrs ago if we didn't get a McNair. Steve was a tough guy who earned the respect and thus had the ability to lead. I'm glad I never have to see stupid 7 in the huddle again. Good bye Kyle, you and joey harrington could be roommates in Chicago next year.
Posted by: the truth | September 3, 2008 4:14 PM
Maybe there should be a rule where if you're a coach who stupidly throws a rookie QB in the fire, you should lose your job by order of the league. Look at all the draft busts in the last 10 years, and see what they have in common.
Couch
Akili Smith
King
Carr
Harrington
Boller
Frye
Alex Smith
They all played in front of makeshift O-lines with no wide outs as rookies, and got hammered.
Posted by: Neil | September 3, 2008 4:27 PM
Face it, folks; Boller was an underachiever into whom Brian Billick and Ozzie Newsome put WAY too much confidence. He will go down in Ravens history as "Mr. Just Give Him One More Year." Really, the Boller era should have ended two or three years ago.
It's nothing personal, but facts are facts, stats are stats (45 career TDs vs 44 INTs), and Boller's record is his legacy. Let's move on now, ok?
Posted by: Cygnus | September 3, 2008 4:45 PM
"Rushing" Boller into the starting position as a rookie wasn't his undoing; his lack of pocket presence, poise and accuracy prevented him from ever adapting to the speed of the NFL. Billick's determination to stick with this kid when it was apparent to all that he wasn't the answer not only squandered time and talent, but also led to the predicament the team now faces as it rebuilds for the future!
Posted by: The "Armchair" QB | September 3, 2008 5:16 PM
Bet we wish we traded for Favre now- but knowing our line, he'd be out with a concussion in Game 1... Also, this logic about putting a player in too early and ruining their careers is flawed in my opinion.
It makes no sense to me. If you put in a rookie from day one, you are giving him the real experience he needs and if you dont see improvement then you know he isn't the guy and that can be the end of it. The way the silly systems and ideology of the NFL now is pay these guys millions to ride the pine, come in their 2nd year (which is their rookie year) stink it up, and then give them 2nd or 3rd chances because of the time and investment you've made! Ridiculous. You draft a first round pick- you play him. Flacco fell into this but he should have been the starter from day one. This way we can get someone else if he proves worthless. Teams are bad for decades because they draft poorly and wait and wait and wait on their investments, especially QB's. The best players should be starters and the best of the best are winners, bottom line.
Posted by: Evan | September 3, 2008 5:17 PM
goodbye Kyle, wish some of these readers had your "class", because you are a "class act", I did not think you were as good as you should have or could have been, but the league could sure use some more classy players like you!
Posted by: Mike B. | September 3, 2008 5:43 PM
I think that Boller did have flashes of being a solid QB but the Ravens put a whole lot of money into the defense.so they never really got a chance to put together a good OL.The reason why he is on IR and the reason why I think he just did not make it in baltimore is because he got rocked every game.Hey remember Elvis Grback, he threw for 4000+ yards before he came to baltimore and cryed.
Posted by: tony | September 3, 2008 7:41 PM
The kyle boller era is over its time to move on boller has not shown any progress since being drafted. Flacco is showing some real talent and should become their new starter. Flacco is the future for Baltimore. Statistics are proving it. GO BALTIMORE!!!!!
