Too much blitzing?
For the second straight practice after Thursday night's game against the Patriots, the defense dominated the offense. It was ugly at times. Part of the reason is that the Ravens' offensive players are still in transition. A lot of them are still soft while the defensive players just play hard all the time, regardless of whether it's a game or practice. New coach John Harbaugh has tried to instill this in his offensive players, and he still has a ways to go.
Another problem for the offense is that the Ravens bring so much defensive pressure, especially with blitzes. The Ravens seem to be on that edge where the pressure is counterproductive to the offense because the offensive players can't get their work in. There are a lot of times when the quarterbacks are hit or harassed, and it ruins the timing on pass patterns.
Of course, the Ravens need to learn how to block these blitzes as well, but when is enough, enough?

Mike, this may be one of the few times I COMPLETELY agree with you.

"but when is enough, enough?"
Tell that to the Steelers on MNF in Pissburgh....
Cory Ivy told the defense to LAY DOWN so the offense could get a play off...LOL!!!
We're a joke on Offense...and you think that telling the D to back off is gonna help??
Omg...LOL!!!

They should continue to blitz until the offense learns how to block it. Whatever do you think the other teams are going to do?

If you think its bad now....wait till Ngata and Gregg get back out there and Reed is able to go full speed.
When is enough, enough...LMFAO!!!!

Perhaps it's wise that Harbaugh has the first string offense practice against the second string defense 4 days of the week to gain confidence.

LOL when is enough enough? Like Mike said, tell that to the Steelers, Philly, and Jax. They better learn to pick up these blitzes, hopefully sooner than later. Get with it Offense!!

I agree with you, Mike. One of the famous philosophers (Socrates or Plato, I believe) once talked about a median. (Yes, I am talking about philosophers in a football blog). Blitzing in practice is necessary because the offense needs to learn how to defend against the blitz, but how many teams blitz like we do? There is nothing wrong with asking the defense not to blitz as heavily so that the offense can get their timing down. There is a median between blitzing too much and asking the defense to play base all the time. The defense does not have to assert their dominance against their own offense. We all agree that improvement is needed on offense but how can anyone expect it to become respectable if their own defense blitzes so much that they cannot get their work in. Some of you Preston haters need to lighten up. He didn't say don't blitz at all, just not as much. Take a chill pill, then give one to Cousins.

I hear other teams in the NFL like blitz also.

The defense will have to carry the team for another year. They should be allowed to do whatever Rex Ryan sees fit.

Gee, I thought everything was Brian Billick's fault. Maybe Ozzie didn't give him much to work with afterall???

Too much blitzing?!!? LOL, OMG!! I think you put this stuff is an comic relief Mike.
If the Ravens have any chance of being a winning football team this year it has to rely on the defense to get it done. The offense will be under even more pressure when Gregg, Ngata, Reed and Suggs return.
The offense has to adjust. Other teams will blitz us like crazy until we show we can handle it offensively and burn them.
Your commnets are the old cop-out attitude for the offense. That mentality has to change and that is hwat Harbaugh is trying to drive home.
Let the dogs loose Rex, keep em coming!

I just figured it out Mike! Have the defense only play with 7 and the offense 11!
Posted by: Andy | August 10, 2008 7:11 PM
You have to practice at Sunday speed.

All last year teams blitzed the Ravens on practically every pass play primarily becuase the Ravens can't pass block, but also because we have no receivers that are considered a threat to beat opposing teams corners. Opposing teams also play at least 8 in the box consistently against the Ravens to stop the run That's why Billick called three yard pass plays. We may as well practice against until we can figure out a way to beat it.

Its common to have a teams offense lag the development of the defense. With this team, in particular, this is a real problem that must be solved. The first and second string D can blow holes in probably any offense playing in the NFL. The D must realize the new offensive scheme and players need a chance to lift this thing off the ground. They could practice with a range of aggression levels of defensive play calling.

I see both sides here. On one hand, if the offense could end up playing well against our defense, we would have a very, very good team overall. This makes me think that the D should play its A game the whole time, and hopefully the offense just learns. However, if the offense is just getting run over again and again, just like in any game, it makes players want to take their ball and go home. At that point, nothing the coaches do will matter, because the offense as a team has it in their minds that they can't get any better. I like the idea of playing the second string Defense against the first string Offense for a while, but then the Defense loses reps.

The Wavens best get used to bwitz packages. Just wait to the weal season staltz. Wight now, it's just wedicuwous, man. Wedicuwous.

Awww. Thats cute. I wonder if the Steelers will care about blitzing too much. I think the offense needs to grow a pair, and start standing up to the D.

The offense does need to get live reps in and maybe they should do it against less blitzes as they install the system. Don't think that it is just the Ravens' offense that can't handle the blitz packages of the ravens. The Pats couldn't handle it last year at all and Rex had to stop in the fourth cause we didn't have the depth to continue blitzing. The Giants used that scheme in the super bowl and dominated. So don't think it is that our offense is so terrible. It is more that our d is very good at what they do, and that is blitzing from whacky formations from all over the field

I've long thought that having such great defenses the last decade may be one of the reasons the offenses have failed to be productive - they never establish the confidence they need to execute consistently. Offenses need to get their timing down, to gel as a unit in order to be successful. As offenses around the league already know - that's very hard to do against our defense.
I like the idea of using the second team D at them for a short time in pre-season - build some confidence and let the O-team get in their reps - then throw the league's best defense at them to toughen them up.

I wonder how many games it will take of watching Boller and Smith attempt to run the offense before the ravens commit to Flacco. With the fact the Flacco and Smith are still learning and Boller just sucks we are in for a long season regardless. Why didnt we go for Pennington?

I think the Ravens def blitz too much even in the regular season. This is why Chad lights us up, why it only took Cleveland 32 sec to get into field goal range. Granted our top corners were injured a lot last season, but the truth is team in our division have upgrated their receivers and have much better QB play than our team. Blitzing as much as we do creates risk we do not need to take. As for our offense in a practice situation, most teams blitz us so why not in practice. at some the offense needs to grow up. Yes they should walk before they run, but we've been crawling for about 7 years years now.
