Reed hurting
Ravens coach John Harbaugh backed off his recent statements that safety Ed Reed would be ready for the regular-season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals, and you knew that would happen. You could see Reed grimace in practice when someone bumped into his shoulder, and he has trouble at times outstretching both arms.
The injury is a little more serious than most people initially thought. The healing process could take some time. In fact, it could take a lot of time.
***
Pro Bowl middle linebacker Ray Lewis isn't going to be happy if he doesn't get a new contract from the Ravens. Lewis gave up his radio show this year because he didn't want to cause any problems with Harbaugh in his first year, and he wanted everything to run smoothly.
Poor Ray-Ray. No new contract yet, and we still don't know if he is going to be allowed to dance during the pre-game introductions.
***
Starting right offensive tackle Adam Terry might play Saturday night against the St. Louis Rams. Terry missed most of training camp with a severely sprained ankle, and he began practicing against yesterday. If I was Harbaugh, I'd hold Terry out of game action for at least another week.
He had surgery on the ankle during the offseason, and it's apparent it's not healthy, and probably won't be completely healed for the entire season. The Ravens need to rest Terry as much as possible.
***
Harbaugh said he didn't know when injured running back Willis McGahee would return, and that McGahee might possibly miss the entire preseason. Somehow that doesn't surprise me, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Ravens cut him before the season is over.
McGahee has angered a lot of Ravens officials over at the Castle with his poor work ethic. He doesn't know his plays so I don't see him playing much in the first regular-season game.

Mike, I have alot of respect for you, but please stop stirring the Ray Lewis pot.

Can someone please explain how almost every one of our star players is injured before the first preseason game? I don't get it, what exactly were they doing in the off season? Or is this why Billick ran such a soft training camp?
Posted by: sid | August 19, 2008 1:36 PM
What was the rush to activate Reed from the PUP list if he's not healthy? They could have kept him there the first six weeks of the season without using up a roster spot. Now they have to keep him on the 53-man roster when he evidently won't be able to play in the first several games (if at all this year).

It may sound silly, but nothing pumps up M & T as loud as when the defense gets introduced, and Ray comes out and dances. It may be a small thing, but why go against the grain, when it does nothing but give a better home field advantage?

What's the chance of the Ravens signing Joe Horn who was just released from the Falcons?
Posted by: Steve Sievers | August 19, 2008 2:01 PM
Ray Lewis's dance is the most unprofessional, self-absorbed, absurd thing in all of pro football. I am a season ticket holder and I cringe at every home game when he does it. Last Saturday's preseason game was refreshing without the silliness. The fans will get fired up just fine without it - and, frankly, it seems to fire up visiting teams more than it fires up the Ravens. Team first, Ray. Good riddance, I hope.

If you think they are going to cut McGahee after 1 pro bowl season you are crazy, plus the salry cap implications would be huge. The guy is in the 1st year of a 5 year extension. McGahee will be here for a while.
Posted by: Tony | August 19, 2008 2:18 PM
Mike, do you know what McGahee's contract is like? I remeber hearing that it could be voided without too much of a cap hit, but it had to be done before this season.

Come on mIke, cut Willis? What you talkin' bout?
He was the best thing we had on offense last year. His knee was hurt bad enough to cut open and scrape out. It was likley bad enough to keep him out of playing shape.
He just had surgury, I assume he is going to do rehab and be ready to play at some point this year.
Knowing he was injured would explain drafting a RB in the second round, when we had a starter who just made the pro bowl on a 5 win team.
You write like a gossip girl. "Ravens Officials are angered" Who? Billick? Oh wait you already ran him out of town. Thanks for that, he was really awful as an OC at least and the whole locker room/ image/ reputation of the team had gotten away from him.
I think it is time to lay off the venom though until we see what the guys do in a game, when they are not hurt, before we go writing them off the roster.

Has anyone else noticed that all the BIG contract Ravens have Boo Boo's.
Heap, Reed, Mcallister, McGahee. Then the is the one of course who has made millions and is still sulking poop Ray Ray. Give me and the rest of the fans a break. Give me a million bucks and i will be out there in a body cast. After all, "its just a flesh wound"
Posted by: Doug | August 19, 2008 2:45 PM
Dude, do you really believe that the Ravens are going to cut McGahee after signing him to a 7 year deal last off-season? Let's be real for a minute and realize that Ray Rice is a rookie, and while the easiest transition from college to the NFL is the running back position, he can't be expected to hold down the fort in the backfield. Our line is too weak, and lets face it, it is dillusional to expect the idea of a Lorenzo Neal/Leron McClain tandem in the backfield to be productive. McGahee stays, and your pipe dreams are put to rest.

I was visiting family in up-state NY last week and went along with some family to see a Bill's Training Camp that they held at 7PM so that more fans could attend.
In short, everyone and I mean EVERYONE came up to me as I was wearing a Ravens' hat and told me how sorry they were that we have Willis on our team

Argh! Mike, can you get this blog to play the theme from M*A*S*H* when the page loads?
Maybe we should just put red jerseys on everyone from here on out. Why so many injuries?
How many are real? Are we too old, practicing too hard or just cursed?
Posted by: Charles | August 19, 2008 3:04 PM
The front office should have cut the head off this team in the offseason. No we are stuck w/ attitude problems like Ray Lewis & McGahee. This team needed to change its identity. Another lack in clarity on Oz's part.
Posted by: Cereal Blogger | August 19, 2008 3:20 PM
Mike, you're a great writer, but why do you hate on Ray so much? He's given this franchise an identity, and believe it or not, most fans like his actions. Most fans wanted someone to speak out against Billick, most fans like seeing him come out fired up and most fans want to see him getting in the heads of the opposing offense.
He won't be the only person happy if The Ravens don't offer him a new contract, the majority of the fan base will be too. Without him on the field, the defense is average at best. He's the Peyton Manning of defenders and there is no solid leadership on that side of the ball without him.
Granted he has his flaws, he is THE leader of this team and you are constantly finding ways to fault him. Give the guy a break.
Also, check your spelling before you post, I constantly see Sun writers doing this in their blogs and articles. What's wrong with the following sentence: "Terry missed most of training camp with a severely sprained ankle, and he began practicing against yesterday."
Posted by: The Dude | August 19, 2008 3:20 PM
MaGahee is his own worst enemy. Had he gone in for the conditioning demanded of the new regime, he'd be a 1600 yard back - remember how he'd pull himself out after plays last year. I say get rid of him despite the fact we wasted a couple of picks on him. He's a bad apple.
Posted by: Rage | August 19, 2008 3:47 PM
If McGahee gets cut it will be his own fault. He appears to be just an immature dude professionally and personally and it had been well documented prior to his arrival, but we went after him anyways with banged up knees and a bad attitude. Maybe he just wants to be like his boy CP in DC because he don't do pre-season either. I have to seriously question management’s decisions as of late especially with the free agent pick-ups. Ravens had no business raiding the Titans cast-offs as well.

You know what'd be great? A little enthusiasm heading into a new season with a new coach. Surely The Sun could find someone to cover the team that doesn't hate all our best players and assume the worst at every opportunity...
Posted by: JC | August 19, 2008 4:19 PM
Firstly, how did Reed get this injury? Everyone is talking about the injury itself and how long he will or will not be out, but how did he report to training camp with the injury? Was it from mini camps? Was it due to recreational activities? This is all very cloudy.
As for Willis, I guess we should have seen the signs. He did this in Buffalo and all the Bills fans tried to warn us, but we ignored them. We told ourselves his behaviour up there was due to his dislike for the city and the coaching staff. Now he is doing the same exact thing here. Time to clean house. And you just know some team like New England or the Colts will take a chance on him and suddenly Willis will be a great player again and his attitude problems will have disipated.

The Dude,
While I agree with what you are saying to Mike, you need to check your own sentence structure. You phrase a question in your last sentence without punctuating it properly and your first has two independent clauses. I'm not an English teacher, but check your own grammar before you critique someone else's. At least Mike's was a typo.

Question for Mike Preston. If the Ravens do cut McGahee after giving up two high draft picks and $40 million to sign him, whose fault will it be that we signed him? Brian Billick, Kyle Boller or Ozzie Newsome?
Posted by: easywriter01 | August 19, 2008 6:04 PM
When are you people going to realize that Mike Preston thrives on writing articles that are HIS opinion and not facts. All you do is fuel his fire to write more articles that will anger most real fans. He is not a fan just a writer for the local paper. Come regular season Ray,McGahee, Heap and all the BIG names will come to play with the best of their abilities no matter what the contract year. Give the new head coach and his staff a chance to succeed or fail, but let's wait until the regular season is in full swing. Let's just get excited to see a team run a new offense finally !

Geez, Mike. Is this slam Ray week? First the blog yesterday about "alone time", and now you bust him for what I think is a good thing (focusing on football instead of a weekly radio show). You must really be missing old comp-u-coach.

NIck,
I'm not a journalist, and therefore don't get paid to do one thing and one thing alone: write well. I'm also fairly sure the punctuation is correct as the colon ends the original sentence... though I'll consult my AP stylebook later and see if I can find anything...

Good riddance Willis. How's about staying out of the bars the night before a game? Have a little self pride. Cut Willis NOW!!!!

Steve I wonder if you were saying good riddance about Ray when they won that Superbow. I hate fake Raven fans!!!!!!!!!!!

Since we are correcting the blog; a lot is two words not one. "alot" is not a word
The Ravens have a lot of growing pains ahead of them.

Bouldin for Suggs!!!
Reed's injury could be a major blow to the D...the O is a mess!
Phelps to do coin flip on opening day?
Can anyone play QB?
Go Ravens!

Yes Mike,I also think waiting a week or two to get into the start of the season before trashing everyone would be a nice touch...TPman

Guys i hate to tell you this but you really blew it with Willis.
Yes i'm a bills fan.
I was thrilled to see him go. It's evident in his interviews that there is absolutely NOTHING upstairs with this guy. He's dumber than dirt.
Now i'm not one to pass on an opportunity to nudge a fellow man in the side and say "DAMN" when a good looking lady walks by. That's just being a man. But evidently Willis really took it too far.
He thinks about nothing but his money and hanging out and women.
You guys should have serious questions about your front office. We ditched the dude that drafted McGahee and let me tell you, his decision making process was an absolute dumpster fire (Tom Donahoe - look it up!).
Your team would be better if you cut McGahee today. Addition by subtraction.
He's a big body, but he doesn't work hard and his knowledge of your playbook can only be as bad as his knowledge of ours was.
He doesn't even know what down it is half the time!!! I'm not kidding.
He is an impossible human to root for. Cut the chord. Start Ray Rice!!!

Am I missing something here? Willis was a Pro-Bowler last year. Where is all this coming from? Because he had surgery and might miss a week or two to start the season? And a Bills fan questioning the Ravens' front office is just comical. What have the Bills had, like 1 winning season in the last 10 years?
