Lewis gets some 'alone time'
The Ravens don't want anybody to read anything into it, but middle linebacker Ray Lewis did sit on the bench while his teammates were being introduced Saturday night for the second preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings. There were other times during the game when he sat alone on the bench while the rest of the defense was huddled up on the sideline. The last time these kind of things happened Lewis was irked at management because he didn't get a new contract.
Lewis is in the final year of his current deal.
So with that said, I won't read anything into it. Not one bit. Nothing.
Maybe Ray was on the sideline waiting to get his ankle taped, or plotting his next pre-game dance. Maybe he was trying to scope out the landscape and the logistics in case he wants to make his intro dropping out of a helicopter.
But let's not read anything into this. Maybe he just wanted to be alone.

Then why bring it up?

Let's see: Ray, Suggs and Bart Scott will be FA at the end of the season. One or two may not return next season. It also could be Stover's last season with the club.
Fans, with Billick and Odgen already out the the door, we are looking at the end of an era.
I'm going to savor what positives that this season may give us.

Mike it is time that Ray found a new home. What a lot of pleasure he has been to watch but there is a time for everything and it is time he moved on.

I have been noticing Lewis in both games, and he just doesnt seem like himself. Not in running, hitting, attitude, nothing.

Stop It Mike Stop It.....Ill tell you what he was thinking because I know all you guys are remedial....He was thinking what a long wasted season this is going to be....... unnecessarily......because if Ozzie had only drafted Leodis Mckelvin at 7 and used that 18'th pick on Mike jenkins, Rays hard work ,passion and dedication wouldn't have to be in Vain....So Hes thinking of all the hard work, training, discipline, passion and dedication being wasted by a political draft as opposed to the little bit of help it would have taken to keep the team competitive and given Ray the support he desrves.

Sometimes people just want to be alone but from the little I know about Ray Lewis, he doesn't seem like the type that prefers alone time. I usually see him interacting with teammates, dancing, chanting and doing anything he can to get him, his defensive unit and the entire team hyped up. I know you're trying not to read anything into this but I'd be worried about Ray's attitude heading into the regular season if we continue to see behavior like this.

Or maybe Ray was sitting there wondering how in the world can his defense, which is beat up, win in the trenches when we don't have a quality QB. Or he probably was trying to figure out how to approach Ozzie in getting Daunte Culpepper under center. Or Ray just could'a been praying.

I'm rooting for John Harbaugh, but he's got a tough road ahead of him. This is going to be a rough year in terms of wins and losses and the "Miami Crew" - Ray, Reed, and Loser MacGahee- will make life tough for their new coach as they did with Billick.

Yes, Ray is in his last contract year with the Ravens, but certainly not in his last year as a player. He is a professional in blueprint and can separate business from his heart. I strongly believe he is a Raven for life (heart) and I hope he can retire as a Raven. But if he is desperate for another ring, then let him try. He want get it in Baltimore.
Ray, I hope we don't see the same headlines next spring as we did with Favre. If you choose to go somewhere fine, it's your choice. But this year we need your poise as bad as a fish needs water, more then ever.
Go Ravens!

Forget keeping Lewis. Can Ozzie bring in Usain Bolt?
Posted by: pete | August 18, 2008 8:49 PM
Ray was sitting there thinking, "How in the world is Mike Preston going to stir up controversy this year?"

I have to agree with Jeff, why bring it up, Mike, if you "don't want to read anything into it" ? As for Ray, love what he has done for the Ravens, but he is a selfish man. The only time that Ray has been a team player is when it benefits him (new contract or playoff contention). When has he ever renegotiated his contract like Manning and Brady to help the team sign or keep players??? Adalius might still be here had he and Reed come to the table and renegotiated. Wasn't it Ray who wanted desparately to get out of Baltimore 3 years ago because the team wouldn't give him more money?!?! Where was his loyalty to the organization and his team spirit then? I don't think I need to mention how Baltimoreans stood behind Ray and his character at the worst time in his life 8 years ago. Do you think Ray is willing to take a pay cut in order to finish his career in Baltimore and show the City what it has meant to him? I think we all know the answer to that one. Bottom line, Ray is sitting by himself because that is the path he has chosen. He will leave this game a very rich man, but I certainly don't envy his spirit.

Rob seems to be a little confused, if not a little "remedial" himself. If the Ravens had used the eighth pick (they never had the 7th) then they never would have had the 18th pick....unfortunately you can't have it both ways, Rob. We used the 8th pick to trade with Jacksonville. We then traded up to 18.

Ray is smart enough to know after going through training camp that this team does not have what it takes to be a serious contender. Maybe he wants a new contract with the team or maybe he does not. The reality is that this thing is over before it started. The Ravens are the worst team in the division just because of their QB play alone and they are so much far behind the other QBs in our division. He knows the QB option is terrible. He knows the O-Line is not very good. He knows the WR corps is mediocre at best and TEs are damaged goods (5 years of inaccurate passes over the middle from Boller were going to take their toll on Heap eventually). He is probably wondering how the Ravens are going to score points this year, especially at the beginning of the season.
Maybe he is a little depressed that he is 33 and knows they are at the bottom of hill looking up without a super bowl chance in sight. It was a lot easier when you were 21. And maybe he is sending a message that it is about time someone else step up and be the type of leader he has been the last 10+ seasons, he is not going to play forever.
But the Ravens are my squad, I refuse to be like ‘Skins fans and proclaim every year we are going to the super bowl. I am more interested in see how we can get better and build a base for the years to come and seeing some of these players we have drafted become good players. Because the draft ‘04-‘07 is average at best and our free agent pick ups have not had the longevity necessary to get a good return on our investment. The whole organization had to go back to the drawing board, including Oz. I am exercising patience and unfortunately when the Ravens get really good and balanced again Ray will probably be out of the picture.

Ray Lewis will be back, but I don't think Bart Scott will be.

MIKE
Why don't you write for the sqweeler 's times. You always add to your stories, the truth was Ray went to the side line to get taped when the team came out. when the d was in a hudle did not happen, your the only one to see that. As the other story came out, you added to it 3 days after the game.As much faith as you have shown for this team, that would have been your first story sunday morn. That is like the players like smith more. That is not true because if some one would have said that you would have his name in the paper. Your always got somthing bad to say about this team. You said Ray would be a distraction to harbaugh's new way. THAT DID NOT HAPPEN ! He has been one of the player's that didn't come up with an injury to get a break.TRY TO BE A HOMMER ONCE IN AWHILE ! If this team stays heathy they will be okay,D D D WINS GAMES.

"if Ozzie had only drafted Leodis Mckelvin at 7 and used that 18'th pick on Mike jenkins" - Rob
So they keep their original pick and then...hold the Texans up at gunpoint and demand they hand over their pick?

MIke,
Why do you insist on making people hate Ray? Where he sat on the bench has nothing to do with how he plays during the game. By bringing it up you are questioning his leadership abilities, which goes against everything that has ever been said about Ray Lewis

Mike, when are you going to give us some alone time?
Posted by: dave | August 20, 2008 5:15 PM
I hope they don't resign Ray Lewis, He alway's cry's when things don't go his way... What a team player, Let him go play for Miami, If this is truely a rebuilding team ( which it is ) REBUILD

Too all the "overreactors" from baltimoreravens.com:
------------------------------
I did ask Ray about his so-called “pouting.” Here’s the conversation:
KB: “Ray, did you know some reporters reported that you were pouting when we introduced the offense last Saturday.”
Ray: “You’re kidding me…for real?”
KB: “Yes, for real, in a couple of places.”
Ray: “What did they say?”
KB: “They said you ran to the bench before the offense was introduced, sat by yourself, and pouted.”
Ray: “For real. I can’t believe that. You know why I went over there? They were having trouble with the speaker in my helmet, and they wanted to test it and fix it. The guy told me to go over there…Amazing, that’s amazing to me.”
------------------------------
Issues with the new headsets for the defense have had many documented problems during training camp...
....but keep calling the face of the franchise a whiner and a bad teammate....

Well Mike looks like Ray was told to go over to get the mic in his helmet fixed. Nice to see you were not trying to stir something up.

Ray lewis was having mike trouble and they told him to go over there so they could run some tests on his helmet microphone.
