Sorting through offensive line options
Ravens coach John Harbaugh suggested after the morning practice that the team had an agreement with a new offensive tackle following yesterday's injury to starter Adam Terry, but it's doubtful it will be anyone with name recognition.
I think the best option to fill in the right offensive tackle position is to move right guard Marshal Yanda back to right tackle, where he played last season as a rookie. The Ravens could then move center Jason Brown back to left guard and Ben Grubbs from left guard to right guard. Chris Chester would become the starting center, and that would leave the Ravens with only the left tackle position to fill.
It sounds like musical chairs, but at least these guys are familiar with the positions, having played there last season. The weak link in the group would be Chester, but if you played him at center, at least he could get double-team help from one of the guards. If Chester started at one of the guard positions, he would be left with one-on-one matchups at times, and that would not be good.

So your saying that Chester as a #2 pick is a bust???

Why not put Oniel Cousins in at Right Tackle? I think Marshal Yanda is a better guard then tackle.

It's just too bad that Chester absolutely sucks. He is too small to play center, was supposed to bulk up.. never did.
Chester may get the start but I really doubt it lasts.. Cousins at RG or RT will probably be the answer.

Are the rookies playing poor enough that neither could do the job at right tackle? Yanda is just not athletic enough for the position, and I'd rather be solid at center and left guard with Brown and Gruggs and keep Yanda where he fits in.

Mike, this is a terrible idea. Moving Yanda out to tackle is the last resort but then you don't shuffle the entire line. Put Chester at RG and give him help with Yanda and Brown. The coaches finally put these guys in their right spots and you are ready to move them back and mess everything up again.

I have to disagree with you this time, at least as far as moving Brown and Grubbs. They are now at their natural positions (C and LG) and should be left there as anchors of the line while it is being rebuilt. I'm okay moving Yanda back out to RT but would not start Chester at RG. Aren't there other options at guard? How has Adrien Clarke looked? He's a guy with some NFL experience. Anyway, I just don't see the point in moving Brown and Grubbs when it's apparent the team doesn't have confidence Chester can handle the center position.

or they could put David Hale at OT. He is listed as a G/T. You will need versatility if you carry 9 OL or less.

Mike, dont you think the other offensive linemen would really be pissed, such as Jason Brown, for going from center in college to LG to C to LG in the NFL? Everything done in the offseason to this point would have been a waste. I don't know if our offensive line can handle so much transition, even though I had thought of your idea as a possible option...The Ravens really need to pick up at least a quality backup from the free agent market, and possibly make a trade for a legitimate starter. Terry seems too banged up to be able to play consistently throughout the season.

There's another option. If Mike Flynn is still available, he could be brought back at center, with Grubbs and Yanda complementing the right side and Brown and Gaither or someone else on the left. They have apparently given up on Chester.

In the immortal words of John McEnroe: "YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!" Chester is simply not an option at center. Period. I could live with Yanda at RT, but use somebody else at the right guard spot. There's simply no way Chester is NFL O-line material.

It surprises me that we did not target an OT earlier in the draft. Adam Terry is way too light in the pants and constantly gets pushed back into the back field.
Per OZ - One thing I know about that group is that, if we have to, we can fix the offensive line," said general manager Ozzie Newsome, "because we've done it before.
This reminds me of the 2001 season - who's Jamal's backup. We didn't have a back-up and it killed our season.

I know the Ravens are limited based on the Cap, but why have they not at least contacted Lecharles Bentley? That would fill the whole at Center, not force Brown away from the Gaurd spot that he play's so well, and leaves Chester on the sidelines (where he belongs, from what it sounds)
That does not fix the left Tackle spot, but it does correct the Right Tackle spot, as then Yanda could stay.

I agree that Chester would be over matched at any position on the line.
WIth the injuries to WIlcox and Sypniewski, I wished that they would have transitioned Chester back to a TE. This is a position he has played previously in HS and College. As TE he could be a help with the weak side Tackle position until our starters are healthy, especially in a 2 TE set.

As is Terry. Way to go, Oz. The Wizard of Clueless, unless Phil Savage is behind the curtain, doing the talking.

FINALLY!!! This is the solution. You could even leave Grubbs at LG if you did not want to disrupt him, but Yanda has been the best OT on this team since J.O. retired. No one may like to hear it but it is a fact. When the season ended Yanda was the best remaining OT on the team. Chester was not given enough time to 'fail' at OC. Preston has the best answer. With Yanda at RT, Brown and Grubbs at OG (etiher right or left) and Chester at OC, then you have the two injured guys, who are both injury prone, to fight it out at LT. This is the way it started in the offseason and should have been allowed to play out. ANYONE they sign at this point is NOT the answer to play OT. Chris Chester on the bench is a waste. He should not play OG. He should be the OC.

What FA OT do you think the Ravens are going after?
Posted by: Andrew | July 30, 2008 4:07 PM
Mike
My take on Chris Chester is that Chester is Raven's version of Matt Jones ( the failed QB to WR on Jags) .
Ozzie has this annoying habit of drafting players based on POTENTIAL , UPSIDE , or 40 Times . Chester only played one year in college as Offensive Lineman , then you drafted him to be our Center/Guard ?
Ozzie , If you wanted to draft a PROJECT player , try that gamble in 5th , 6th , 7th rds , not in 2nd rds .
There's too much of reach for 2nd player . If I were Ozzie , I would either A) release Chester or B) ask Chester to audition for TE , as Donna commented .

I hope this OL problem makes the QB decision a 2 man race, not 3....no way can you put Flacco behind the line in its fragile state...
Posted by: Dave | July 30, 2008 4:24 PM
Actually, Brown's natural position is C and Grubbs' natural position is LG, and Yanda's best position is RG. I think you keep those guys in the middle of the line and try out Cousins at RT. Bring in a veteran to play LT and just get through the year. To protect Flacco, start Boller all year and then take a LT in the draft next year. By then, the other 4 should be comfortable with their positions and next thing you know, the Ravens have a decent O-line

Word has it that John Welbourne and Chad Slaughter are both going to get signed in the next day or so. Both were at the facility today and Slaughter got worked out. Slaughter played OT for the Raiders the past few years and Welbourne has played G & T for Philly & KC in the past he went in the 2nd round in 1999. I guess whatever help we can get at this point....

Andrew has probably said the smartest thing so far. Bring in a vet for LT, and have Terry/Gaither/Hale/Cousins all battle for RT.

Grubbs , Brown and Yanda are in their right spots , the problem is Chester and Terry are not NFL material but both high draft choices so we have to carry them or have the cap hit anyway , poor offensive drafting by Ozzie has made this a joke like situation,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Poor Joe , Kyle and Troy , put your running shoes on............
Posted by: Jim from Dundalk | July 30, 2008 5:01 PM
I agree with Andrew. Brown, Grubbs, and Yanda need to stay in place, all 3 are SOLID at their natural positions. Use Cousins at right tackle and see how he handles it and hopefully we can get this trade through with the Jaguars to pick up Khalif Barnes or Richard Collier.

So, Ozzie was right on 3 out of 5? That's a pretty good average. What do you expect miracles??

I just don't know.

Everyone is writing off Terry as "bad" already; doesn't anyone remember how well he played when he started for Ogden two years ago? He was pretty solid, and promising.
Don't write Terry off as a bust quite yet.
