Ravens should address O-line

I'm having a hard time believing left offensive tackle Adam Terry will make it through 2008 without having another ankle injury. Terry has been filling in for regular starter Jared Gaither, who is out for at least a couple of days with an ankle injury of his own. Terry had surgery on his left ankle during the offseason and was held out of all the offseason minicamps.

Now you can tell why. There are times when he hobbles after plays, and he has problems pushing off. In the morning session today, he was beaten badly by outside linebacker Jarret Johnson after Johnson put a spin move on him. Johnson is a solid player, but he is no Dwight Freeney. You can't afford to have a poor left tackle, and the Ravens are taking a gamble with both Gaither and Terry.

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome has been scanning the waiver wires looking for a possible replacement, or backup candidates. If he doesn't find one, he might pursue Roman Oben, who played last season with the San Diego Chargers, but is working with the Ravens through the league as a minority assistant coach. Oben looks like he's in pretty good shape -- it might take him two weeks to get in condition. But the former third-round pick out of Louisville in 1996 is better than both Gaither and Terry, and could provide some leadership on an inexperienced offensive line.

Look mike i have been preaching to the choir for 2 years about this situation. Nobody on these site whats to believe just how bad these 2 tackles really are. I said it last year , last week, and again today this team won't win without two stud offensive tackles , no team in this league does. Terry was a bd second round choice when we drafted him and he remains a bust out today. Bad ankle or no bad ankle lfast defensive lineman always have beat him out of his stance. What on earth was ozzie thinking when in is wildest dreams he couldn't have thought gaither and terry would be any good. This stituation won't get any better and our Qb's will be in for a very long year.

In retrospect, I think the Ravens should have pursued Shane Olivea, the former Charger RT. We need help at both LT and RT.

Then why did we not sign Sims?

What are they waiting for? Gaither has already shown that he can't play hurt....or even with a headache...

I agree 100 %. I thought Ozzie should have made a stronger effort to sign Barry Sims when he was being pursued. I doubt there's anyone left as a free agent who can help, nor are you going to find anyone decent via the waiver wire. Ozzie may have to pony up a 2009 draft pick before the end of the preseason to acquire some team's surplus tackle, just to get someone serviceable at the position.

Roman Oben!!! Are you kidding me!!! He hasnt played since 2005 and he has a nail in his foot.

I believe that the O-Line remains the biggest potential weakness for the Ravens. Both Gaithers andAdam Terry are unknown quantities at this point. There have been a lot of changes in the line and it's too early to tell how they will pan out. Grubbs is sliding over to LG; Yanda will move from RT to RG; Jason Brown, who was solid at LG now goes to C; Ogden gone. It means that every position will be played by somone who didn't handle it last year. That's a lot of changes. It's scary to think that the line mave be less effective than last years..........YIKES!

If this is the offensive line that is going to start the season then please do not let Flacco on the field. It makes no sense to let what happened to Boller happen to him.

The offensive line will be just that. RIP Ravens QB. Sit Flacco and let one of the other too take the hits!

Relax everyone, it's only the 4th day of training camp. Everyone is going to be nicked up at some point. Gaither will be back soon enough; don't you guys remember when he started last year? He looked solid. Young, inexperienced, but solid. He's only gotten better from last year.

Terry also looked solid when he played for JO two years ago. Though with an injured ankle, I don't know how effective he'll be.

Let's not jump to conclusions. It's the 4th day of training camp, 6 weeks until the regular season. Plenty of time for to get healthy, and attempt to gel.

Ok, here we go again. Why did they shuffle the whole line? They had a chance to keep this line in tact from a year ago and replace J.O. only. The offensive line of J.O., Brown, Flynn, Vincent, and Pashos gave up a team record low 17 sacks in 2006. Last season with injuries and rookies starting all over the place they were still as good as most of the Raven lines in the past in pass protection giving up 38 or 39 sacks if I remember correctly. Vincent was a poor player and Chris Chester played in his place of him in at least 5 of the games in 2006. Chester was drafted as an offensive center and should have been given more than 2 weeks of OTA's to hold his spot. Yanda played WELL for a rookie at OT and if nothing else could be said, he is a better RT than either Terry or Gaither. The suggestion is and always will be from me, leave Chester at OC, Grubbs and Brown and right and left OG respectively, Yanda at RT and let Gaither and Terry fight it out at LT. LT should have been addressed in the draft as well. The other thing is Barry Sims left Baltimore feeling not as wanted as he was in wanted in San Francisco where he ended up. Go figure, he was there visiting the day J.O. retired. Last year all everyone could talk about was the good young developing line, now they shuffle the deck and have moved backwards. Remember 4-2 was the record without J.O. last year. 1-9 was the record with J.O.. You can not take a solid starter at OT (Yanda) out of the mix. Tackles are too hard to come by. They kicked Chester to the curb too quickly and showed their (lack of) genius by shuffling the deck.

This training camp will distinguish the men from the boys and also single the ego's and those who have an agenda other then the team and to win. The physicality of the game is very important. If you can't stay healthy during camp you wouldn't really stand a chance during the regular season either. The O-line scares me !

i was @ the afternoon practice on friday and one of the sharpie marker girls asked terry if he needed anything. terry replied" a cortisone shot would be nice". needless to say the sharpie girl couldnt give him the hook up for that.

lol on the nail in foot.i just have one word no two, cap money.we'll be o.k. if not this yr.than next yr.goooooooooo RAVENS.

Well, Mike, I guess you're concerns about Adam Terry making through 2008 on that ankle were justified.

Justin, Oben actually played in four games last year and two the prior year. After a disgusting injuring in 2005 (his foot folded in half), Roman made a long recovery. He would have been back playing on a lot of teams but Marcus McNeil emerged and exceeded expectations.

I like the thought of Oben. He's a stand up guy and a great motivator for a young line. He offers maturity and intelligence, something a lot of players lack. I'd take the guy w/a nail in his foot, who loves the game and plays for excellence instead of money and fame, over the ego-centric young boys that are out there now. Plus aren't nails pretty strong (lol). Apparently stronger than bone Justin.
