Morning notes
Perhaps the biggest news from Ravens training camp this morning was the return of Willis McGahee after sitting out yesterday. The running back’s left knee was taped, but it did not appear to slow him.
Cornerback David Pittman (foot) is no longer on the physically-unable-to-perform list and practiced today. Linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo and rookie offensive tackle David Hale also returned after watching from the sideline yesterday.
Left offensive tackle Jared Gaither (ankle), defensive tackle Haloti Ngata and running backs P.J. Daniels (cramps) and Cory Ross were also absent. The team has not commented on the injuries to Ngata and Ross. Cornerback Samari Rolle (bereavement) is still excused from camp.
Other observations:
* Quarterback Kyle Boller seemed to get the bulk of the reps with the first offense, and he and wide receiver Derrick Mason hooked up often. But Troy Smith and the second offense enjoyed the most success against the first defense in goal-line situations.
Smith rolled out twice for touchdowns, while rookie Joe Flacco connected with tight end Lee Vickers for his only score of the drill. Smith’s only mistake was a pass to rookie wide receiver Ernie Wheelwright that was intercepted by cornerback Corey Ivy. In his best imitation of Deion Sanders, Ivy high-stepped his way down the left sideline for what would have been a touchdown.
Flacco didn't create any waves, good or bad.
* Smith's best play occurred during full-team drills. From the 40-yard line, Smith pump-faked to a running back in the right flat, then floated a pass to rookie wide receiver Justin Harper, who was wide open 20 yards downfield and jogged into the end zone.
* Kicker Matt Stover went 4-for-7 in field-goal attempts. He was successful from 20, 39, 42 and 43 yards, but his kicks went wide right from 47, 50 and 53 yards.
* Linebacker Dan Cody recovered from a brief injury to "sack" Boller. Linebacker Antwan Barnes registered two sacks of Boller, too.

I think the Baltimore Sun has a love affair with Troy Smith. I went to practice Sat and he looked horrible over throwing receivers. But when I came on here Sunday, all was said of how good he looked. I was wondering if the writers for the Sun were even there.

Ed - What is wrong with Ed Reed? he is the best player on this team and all we know is he has an undisclosed injury. The last time that happened, we found out Rolle had epilepsy. I understand the Ravens will not disclose the injury, but is he expected to be out for an extended period of time?

Same old story , Boller gets no protection even in practice............

Go Troy Smith!

I have also come to the same conclusion as Kevin. Baltimore Sun writer are in love with Smith for whatever reason. But on think for sure is Boller can give us best chance this year with the new offensive play book. One more thing we need to get our O-Line fixed otherwise you can put any quarterback Manning or Brady they can’t do anything with the O-Line we have right now.

Troy Smith looked to be far and away the best QB out there. What would you guys know about it, you're Baltimore fans, you have never seen a good QB!

though Reed's injury is undisclosed, he was still at practice with Pittman working on his footwork yesterday...certainly better than standing on the sidelines

Mike the Poster (not Preston) your argument would have more merit if you used proper grammer when you type. But do you not remember Boller fumbling the ball off of his knee or being stripped while in the pocket? How about throwing into double and triple coverage.
The who makes the least mistakes is the one that gives us the best chance to win.

I agree with the love affair with smith coverage. I live in Westminster and was at practice Saturday and Sunday and smith looked horrible. I have no worries that his true abilities will be exposed to the fans in pre season. He looks like a fast Bolller with no arm. Kordell light.
We don’t need a college qb running our offense just because he won the Heisman. Charlie Ward, Danny Wuerfull, Chris Winkie, Eric Crouch, Ty Detmer, and throw in Gino. All bust, heck the only decent qb to win the Heisman was Palmer, Plunkett and Stabach. Only two have won a super bowl, none since 81.
So no one in the state of maryland can say "but he won the heisman". Its a poor and ignorant argument. He is undersized and has an inaccurate weak arm. This league is about big arms.
Stop with the argument of mobility is needed because of a weak O-line too. A quick release is also a great combatant of a weak underdeveloped O-line. Just ask Marino and Manning.
My point is we need a big arm to survive and thrive in this league. Smith dosent have it, Flacco and Boller do. We all know that Boller will open, and Flacco get his playing time as the season progresses, because Boller is Boller. Smith will wear his ball cap and wait around for an opportunity that because of his limited ability. Beating a 2nd and 3rd string Steelers team means nothing.
Everyone with half a brain will realize this after the pre season.
This love affair with smith should come as no surprise. After all we can never count on the sun for actually reporting the facts. Just there opinions on everything.

Same old story, Boller enablers blaming the OL for WonderBust's inability to escape even the slightest pressure or get rid of the football in a timely fashion.
He'll be teeing it up with Tim Couch soon enough and his in-denial fanclub will STILL be blaming Billick, the OL, bad feng-shui at M&T etc.

Get ready for a 4-12 season Baltimore!

I was at every practice so far, and Troy Smith is by far the best looking QB on our roster right now, and I am still pulling for Boller and I definietly don't think Flacco should start this year. Smith just has some sort of uncanny ability that makes him look good and make nothing out of something. As much as I want Boller to win this thing man he just looks timid and gun shy out there and I don't understand why.

I wonder how many chances the average QB gets in the NFL for one team, especially a QB drafted in the 1st round? Hmm...2-3 years, maybe 4 at most. So, Boller has been giving how many years? 5 and still is same old story...when will people wake up and see this? Ridiculous...

I wonder if Nakamura will snag another pick today? regardless, this kid has got me excited to see what he can do in a real game.

Troy Smith by far has looked the best in training camp, i have went too a couple and he has looked good, and Boller well lets just say he has not looked too good.
Posted by: Josh | July 28, 2008 6:40 PM
Boller was hurt halfway through his first year, hwent 9-7 his second year , was hurt most of his third year and MacNair was here for his 4th and 5th years. So that gives him about 2-2.5 years worth of starts. he hasn't been great but the whole situation ws pretty chaotic. Still, I'm surprised he is still here but we'll see what he makes of what is surely his last chance in Baltimore. He will get a chance elsewhere.

Im no Boller fan either but i believe he looks as bad as he does cause our receivers are too short for what Boller is good at doing. Boller isnt accurate enough to zip passes into tight spaces but he has a strong arm. I bet if he was on a team with tall aggressive receivers Boller would look like a hall of fame quarterback.

Wonder no more...Nakamura snagged another pic today and he'll get another one tomorrow. He will be the AFC defensive rookie of the year!

The Bengals sure could use a guy like Nakamura seems to be.
How is it that he played right under there noses(almost literally) and they missed out on him?

go flacco

It's interesting to see the different things that people see in Smith. I mean really opposite views. The only thing I think you can say is that you see what you want to, and I say that more for the Smith supporters than his critics. Before any play is should have been obvious that Boller was the likely starter. We will soon see...

I can't wait until all of these Troy Smith haters eat their words! I've been through this before at Ohio State where he was clearly the better qb but had to sit behind a lesser man. After his success, every fan that was hating turned and acted like they loved him! Baltimore fans will love this man when it is all said and done. Get ready to eat some crow!

hey kevin, if the sun was talking bout boller u be saying the same thing, it doesnt matter the coach got to make the decision at QB.
Posted by: john | July 29, 2008 11:23 PM
people dont understand manning and brady have fantasic o-lines if our QB was behind there we be in the playoffs every year, now if they had our o-lines they would be broadcasting on CBS and Fox on sundays. Now what if brady and manning had average o-lines do u think they would be as good as they are. why is people putting down troy smith he is only competing for the job give the man a chance before u downgrade youre doing it to flacco and did to boller.
