Ogden and McNair officially retired

The Ravens have officially placed offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden and quarterback Steve McNair on the reserve-retired list.

By making the transaction after June 1, the Ravens were able to spread out the salary cap hits over two seasons (2008 and 2009). The retirement of Ogden and McNair should free up about $6.5 million in cap space for this season.

The Ravens are expected to use that on signing their draft picks as well as possible contract extensions for linebacker Terrell Suggs and center Jason Brown.

Jamison - What about Ray's possible extension? Preston said we should hear one way or another about that shortly. Any news?

I don't understand why if someone is retiring it counts against the cap? The Ravens aren't required to pay the player for the remaining years of a contract if the player does not fulfill said contract, so why count any money against the cap?

I think we should place a premium on signing Brown over Suggs...Brown has less experience but therefor has more upside and looks like he could develop into a pro bowler/all pro if he works on his pass blocking technique....Suggs, on the other hand, has shown us what he can be at his best, and this is a good pass rusher when he is surrounded by other good players. But he is not near as effective when the spotlight is on him, and therefor can be replaced over the next few years with proper drafting

Confused - It's the balance of the signing bonus proration. When a player signs a 5 year deal with a 10 million signing bonus 2 million of that bonus counts toward the cap every year. If the player retires after the end of year 2, the remaining 6 years counts toward the cap the next year unless, as the Ravens did, the team waits until after June 1 in which case another year is knocked off and then the balance is applied to the next year's cap. Same rules as when a player is cut.

I agree 100 per cent Jack B. Suggs is a premadonna as well. He strikes me more as a "me" player than a team player. He would rather rack up ten sacks in a blowout loss than simply win a game for the team. This is not to say he is a medicore player. When he has the right cast around him, he his one of the best in the league. But you are right, by himself, he is an average LB at best.

Brown on the other hand is coming into his own. He is the veteran of the O-line now and he can player guard or center. He is also younger than Suggs,

Make an effort to re-sign both guys, but make Brown the priority.

I have nothing against Ray Lewis , he been outstanding player for Ravens , however , he is getting up there in age , and also past his prime . I think Ravens would be wise to focus on Brown/Suggs signings first , before getting to Ray. Futhermore , how many years , or even how games has Ray has left in his tank? Ravens dont want give Ray that big contract and all of sudden , he gets washed up as player. Just ask Seattle about Shaun Alexander .

I think Ray Lewis is gonna have a great year... Still one of the best LB's in the NFL... I would take him at his age now over that idoit Merriman or Orlacher...
